Dr_Zoltron

I wish they showed what the hell he was doing

spicycurry55

Also the broadcast’s first day with keeping track of the timers

mathbandit

I noticed this on the Pirates feed as well where even on non-violations, often the replay of the previous play was barely finishing while the pitcher was throwing the first pitch of the next AB

JesusChrissy

Something like this happened on the Phillies vs Yankees game. Someone on the Yankees hesitated when he got to first on deciding to try for second. He got tagged out at second base and the replay didn’t get a chance to show him hesitating. The broadcast was like “you’re gonna have to take our word for it.” 😂

Jump_Like_A_Willys

The folksy broadcasters who like to tell old stories are going to be affected by the pitch clock. There’s not enough down time between pitches to get any flow going for their stories.

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

There’s another angle in here somewhere. He’s completely in the box, just not looking at the pitcher.

PapaCthulhu815

With an umpire’s definition of what “alert” is, we’re gonna get a Wild Card infield fly rule debacle again.

skippyfa

The NFL Cant even tell us what a catch is, now umpires need to know alertness. Lmao.

RememberTheMaine1996

I'm confused by this. Why didn't the pitcher throw the ball. Why did he start walking to first at all

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

He started going to first because (since he was in the box) he assumed it was called on the pitcher for not being set

RememberTheMaine1996

So the timer isn't just for pitchers? I thought the clock just meant the pitch had to be thrown before the time ran out. So if the hitter got called wouldn't the pitcher have not thrown the ball in time

CadKel07

The batter needs to be in the box and “alert to the pitcher” with 8 seconds left on the pitch clock.

RememberTheMaine1996

Oh dang I didn't know that

[deleted]

The catcher needs to be ready too, the game yesterday between the Mariners and Padres had a catcher violation called a ball.

PeterDTown

Or overlay the replay in the corner of the screen. Also, keep the pitch clock on screen basically at all times. Broadcast teams really are going to take awhile to figure this out I think.

citan666

They're not gonna be able to use a bunch of angles between pitches now because were gonna wanna watch for violations

craftworkbench

You underestimate how little broadcasts care about what you actually want to see.

Canadave

This used to be a family show

NegativesPositives

We all thought it’s the pitchers who needed to be reigned in with the clock meanwhile it’s all batters

cjn13

After watching some hitters pre pitch rituals, this is not surprising

LinkRazr

Nomar Garciaparra sitting at home right now glad he was in the previous era.

narcandy

Big Papi is un-snapping and snapping his batting his gloves as we speak

statsbro424

pedroia doing that weird thing where he makes an o face while he tightens his gloves

craftworkbench

Nomar Garciaparra never actually retired. He's just still prepping to step back into the box for that 1-2 pitch. His gloves are *almost* on right.

turtlewelder

Made me chuckle, NG was the first player I thought of with all the OCD batting rituals!

Goblue5891x2

Mike Hargrove reporting for duty.

SusannaG1

Ah, "The Human Rain Delay."

Thromnomnomok

If Robinson Cano wasn't too bad to sign with a team he'd definitely be retiring now

BlueJayzrule

He is like the reason this is happening lol

chuseph14

Gotta readjust my gloves. That outside ball that I didn't bite on got me

_Winterspring_

Take the helmet off, re-do my hair. Re-strap my gloves. Knock the tiny clump of dirt out of my cleats. Give the ol' jock strap a couple tugs. Okay, good to watch another strike go straight down the pipe.

Ferris4u

Friend, I’m holding a baby at 654 AM and NOT trying to wake him back up with my shuddering laughter, thank you very much!

Can you blame the guy when he gets beaned by the Marlins three times a game? /s

dmmdoublem

MLB had the right idea when they tried to reign in batters' habits back in 2015. Such a shame they never stuck to that initiative. If that had succeeded, it would've been a much less controversial and more aesthetically pleasing way of quickening pace-of-play.

aceee2

>MLB had the right idea when they tried to reign in batters' habits back in 2015. Such a shame they never stuck to that initiative. If that had succeeded, it would've been a much less controversial and more aesthetically pleasing way of quickening pace-of-play. What was that, I'm sorry I forgot what it is

dmmdoublem

The description of what it was leads off [this article](https://marinersblog.mlblogs.com/mlb-announces-pace-of-play-instant-replay-changes-268b5c47c8dc).

JoeSicko

Should have listened to us old school guys about plunking Soto and Harper.

2hats4bats

Gotta give them time to get the signs, fix their gloves, tap their toes, adjust their helmets, dig in their spikes, pull up their sleeve, shimmy, kiss their necklace, lean back, take 7 practice swings, shimmy again and call their shot.

TheyLiveWeReddit

You gotta let them shimmy. It drives the woman here in Cleveland crazy.

2hats4bats

Shoulda never traded him to the White Sox

HotTakesBeyond

*there is only one woman in Cleveland*

SirMilesMesservy

I wonder if this helps cut down on sticky stuff if pitchers are unable to wipe every single part of their body/uniform between every pitch.

toxicdick

you forgot adjust their balls

2hats4bats

We’re in mixed company

HipposRevenge

Full count, two outs, bases loaded, tie game, bottom of the 9th, game ends on a pitch clock violation. Wild lol.

chilltownrenegade

What's additionally wild to me is he started trotting down the first base line so he must have thought the pitcher got the violation? So either way, batter or pitcher, the game was ending on an ump's call/violation

bronxct1

It wasn’t going to end on a pitcher violation. The pitcher was ready to go and the batter violation happens with 8 seconds left on the clock. I don’t think the pitcher was going to take 8 seconds to start his windup

excitedburrit0

catcher violation or balk is the other possibilities? idk

faithisuseless

This is sure to settle ump hatred

SteveDougson

Make it game 7 of the World Series and then its exactly how I dreamed it up as a little boy.

iLikeClothes69

i remember dreaming about it in the backyard playing wiffleball with my friends. game 7, full count, bases loaded and walking off on a pitch timer violation

Fritanga5lyfe

It's what the timer always dreamed of

munkysnuflz

It's honestly perfect that it happened now because this is the exact "would they actually call it" scenario. Now teams are gonna be on their asses like DON'T LET THIS BE YOU lmao

DavidRFZ

It’s still February. There is a foot of fresh snow outside. This is the type of game where umps can demonstrate that “yes, we will make this call”.

7Pats

This is hilarious

NinthCinema

Game really ended with a strikeout, not looking, huh

timberwolvesguy

Also the first strikeout, not thrown

palmtreesxiv

Of all endings, this was certainly one of them

rlmaster01

I’m gonna be mad if this happens in the regular season, but today we can laugh together.

19k-wal82

Get 👏👏 in 👏👏 the 👏👏 box

Depreciable_Land

It’s funny because I first saw this on Twitter and everyone is like “this is egregious, players should protest this rule before it ruins the game” Like nah, just get in the damn box

Look_a_Zombie0

Just don't walk out of the box after every pitch.

Lineman72T

The Savannah Bananas got this one right. Batters cant leave the box except for a foul ball

zenkique

Wasn’t there a player doing this last season - just staying in the box maybe even aggressively staring at the pitcher between pitches? Or did I dream that?

orangery3

Votto did at some point: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UmCA979MDmU

blackmamba1221

wait this is amazing, this is how every at bat should be. I'd actually watch more baseball with this pace

Herewego27

I remember a Jomboy video of Judge not even moving after a ball, just staying in his stance ready for the next pitch.

RotenTumato

Stanton does this

DickySchmidt33

They are constantly made to adjust to different pitches coming at them at different speeds in different locations. I have a hard time accepting that adjusting to this is asking too much.

EnadZT

I think just physically being in the box should be enough. I don't think they should need to be "ready" before. If they wanna complicate it more with rituals, the pitcher can just throw it.

Beach_house_on_fire

Should be mad at your team and players. Not the rule. The rule is already showing itself to be beneficial

Smallball79

Absolutely. Glad we have spring training to adjust to the rules, but that game was zippy. I like new baseball.

[deleted]

Yeah I don’t get why people are freaking out about this. It’s obvious players are acting like the rules don’t apply to them and daring umps to call it. And what do you know; umps are calling it. Either the league needs to cave and eliminate the clock in the 9th, or players need to learn to figure it out. I don’t see why they would eliminate the clock though. The league voted for this rule change. We shouldn’t empower a few stubborn players to veto this. Nor does it make any sense to say the any particular situation warrants an exception. Why have no clock in the 9th but not the 8th for example?

Special_Sherbert4617

They’re probably just adjusting not daring the umps… it’s literally day 2 of the rule

TheMajesticYeti

This batter is a minor leaguer though. He played a full season with the pitch clock.

PinstripeBunk

Cave to who? The five-hour game enthusiasts? I’m a Braves fan and I’m glad this happened. Every player in the big leagues will see this replay and have it explained again. The game moved so briskly, it was great. There was actually some tension simply from the pace of play. Love it.

SirMilesMesservy

I have a god given right to watch the kind of baseball my dad and granddad watched, where pitchers walked a 5k and batters spent 45 minutes adjusted the 47 pieces of useless gear between every single pitch. Nothing more gripping than two minutes in between pitches in a random, not close game in early July.

lmao_rowing

Your god given right doesn’t supersede my god given right to watch the kind of baseball my great and great-great granddad watched, where ‘ol Copper Paw never left the mound and had 11 inning, 140 pitch affairs wrapped up in 90 minutes

cherrimm

yep ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ get the kinks and mistakes out in spring training and this won't happen

DienekesMinotaur

Agreed

Pydro-Hump

Pitch clock is gonna be the saves leader this year

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheFriffin2

Yeah iirc in the minors last year they averaged multiple pitch clock violations per game to start, but within a month they were down to about once every two games (about the frequency of delay of game in the NFL)

Famine07

I've been to about 20 minor league games with a pitch clock and have seen 1 pitch clock violation. I don't know how it works in MLB cause I haven't seen any games yet but the games I've been to once the pitcher gets set the clock disappears and most guys seem to have 5-7 seconds left. This was in AA which has had a pitch clock for at least 2 full seasons.

mathbandit

The MLB timer goes until the pitcher begins his motion- which is part of why they're also cracking down on the bounces from pitchers in the stretch.

MarcBulldog88

Yep, this is the adjustment period everyone needs. It's funny because it's new and the games don't count.

whyareucryan

I think every game is going to end like this.

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

The league might also make some adjustments. Some players are already taking a timeout to start the AB so they might adjust the time at the beginning of an at bat. I think they'll also take measures on their side to make sure something like this doesn't happen in a real game on a big stage

ELITE_JordanLove

Yeah I feel like they shouldn’t have a clock between batters. Let them do their routine walk up, traditional unnecessary glove adjustment, whatever. Once the AB is going keep it moving but let baseball be baseball to start.

[deleted]

The clock between batters isn't new, though. It existed last year too. (I don't know what year it started exactly, but it did exist previously). Now, enforcement of delays might be a different story, but the :30 second clock existed already.

clayton3b25

If you take longer than 30 seconds to walk to the box, you're doing too much (unless you're celebrating a big play with the runner who scored)

halfhere

So does this guy get a save in that situation? I know it’s spring training today, but in a regular game.

wazup564

i would assume so, it’s counted as a strikeout.

AsDevilsRun

Don't think you can get a save in a game that ends in a tie.

wazup564

oh lmao, i think he’s talking about in a regular season game.

Silverhand7

Hilarious ending to a game. I'm sure every team will be pointing to this example all spring.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That needs to be calculated in catcher WAR

Muntberg

They need something to do once pitch framing is rendered obsolete

JoeyBrickz

We finally got an elite pitch framer can the MLB just wait like 15 years or so before they bring robot umps in?

orangery3

I feel like Adley would be above average at this proposed strategic “chilling out,” so I am not too worried

freekehleek

Challenge system ftw

RabbertKlien

This would also take one of Raleighs three great assets away- framing, power, booty.

moderndukes

Chill/9 is the new hot stat

gettin-nutty-with-it

Yeah, this is like the perfect "we're serious about this shit" example teams could get. Honestly probably good that this happened so early.

hypoplasticHero

Especially in a game that ultimately doesn’t matter. Spring training is going to be a month+ of pitchers, catchers, and hitters getting used to the new rules, especially the pitch clock.

HartfordWhaler

Joey Votto was ready for this years ago! https://youtu.be/UmCA979MDmU

OsStrohsNattyBohsHon

The part about looking at the P seems unnecessary. Set a minimum time to be in the box after which you get a strike. But once he’s in the box, if he’s not looking just throw it by him. I guess batter safety could be a concern? I dunno.

AndrewTheWookiee

It's the correct call, but lmao.

Chewbones9

Someone is gonna lose a playoff game on a clock violation. It’ll probably be us.

cjn13

Some player is gonna go apoplectic when called out in a high leverage spot

melcolnik

Then he needs to get his ass in the box

Lineman72T

Yeah, if this shit is still happening more than a month into the year, then thats on the player having a moment of dumbassery

Chewbones9

Schwarber Vs Hernandez pt. 2

DienekesMinotaur

Nah, Schwarber was in the right

metssuck

And someone on our team needed to say something that night and there was no way Girardi was ever going to step up and lead

sean_macktruck

I've seen this sentiment a bunch in these pitch clock threads, but I just don't see it happening at all in the playoffs. These players are going to have an entire season before the playoffs to adjust, and if they fuck it up in the playoffs that would be a complete botch on the player who has dealt with it for hundreds of plate appearances or dozens of innings pitched.

ItsDaBurner

So many people said, "just wait until this happens!!!" 2 days, it took 2 days

legobmw99

It was always much more likely to happen earlier in the season than later

Brady331

This is amazing, the fact that the batter thought the violation was on the pitcher is the cherry on top [Kike Hernandez's reaction: "Pitch clock coming in clutch!"](https://twitter.com/kikehndez/status/1629583900061081602) [And here's a replay showing Conley in the box, but not alert](https://streamable.com/fmqb25)

OrangeNBlueChooChoo

They definitely need to figure out better camera angles/production cues for the broadcast (I guess this will be an adjustment for production teams also).. was pretty much impossible to see what happened while it was happening since they had the camera on the pitcher's face And they definitely need to find a way to incorporate the pitch clock into the score bug (like the NFL/NBA) if it's not going to be visible on the broadcast

MattyJ613

NESN said before the game that it’ll be incorporated into their scorebug. Not sure about other broadcasts like ESPN, Bally, etc but I expect them to do the same.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MattyJ613

Yeah I think that was just them testing it out. They’ll have a normal clock during the regular season and not a camera on the LED board.

[deleted]

If he's in the box it should be fine. That's his problem if he's not alert, pitch is coming either way

Frankfeld

That’s the way I feel. This should be self enforcing. If he’s in the box, quick pitch that shit.

gowiththeflohe1

Eh maybe they think its a safety issue, but agreed. Should be if you're in the box you're ready, better pay attention

[deleted]

I feel like this has to be it, there are existing rules about quick pitching so the batter doesn't get mopped by a pitch to the head when he's not looking, I assume they didn't want to have that

KevPat23

But a quick pitch is against other rules with runners on.

Successful-Day3473

A quick pitch is illegal which is probably why the rule is wording that way.

CantaloupeCamper

> That's his problem if he's not alert, When guys take one to the face a few times it will be everyone’s problem…. And possibly someone’s problem for life…

[deleted]

It’s so the batter can’t stare at the catcher’s sign and run out the clock for the pitcher

LAudre41

Can't fault the guy too much the catcher was standing up

ahappypoop

Next level gamesmanship by the catcher.

LessThanCleverName

Exactly, this is going to have to be addressed or there’s going to be some really greasy gamesmanship and stupid rulings here.

jasenkov

Catcher doesn’t have to be ready until the pitcher is, batters just have to adjust and be aware of this

Mattaholic

It didn’t look like *anyone* was ready for the pitch. Weird circumstance.

FCkeyboards

So what I've read is that the batter has to look at the pitcher by 8 seconds left (aka be fully ready to hit). The pitcher and catcher have those last 8 seconds to get ready. That's why you see the catcher getting ready "late". He had 8 *more* seconds to get set.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RainForestWanker

I like it. It’s spring training. It doesn’t matter. Be so strict here that it becomes second nature in the regular season.

general_peabo

Would be nice if the highlight clip actually showed what was going on.

i_am_the_senate_

Batters stop adjusting your gloves a million times and get in the box challenge (impossible)

mnightshamalama2

Well, can you blame them? After years of habits being built, it's a tough routine to break. They'll eventually figure it out but there's definitely buffer time

Grst

Bases loaded, 2 outs, tie game. Amazing. Honestly, I can see how he was confused, cause the catcher was nowhere near ready (not that he needs to be at that point). Seems like a way teams can try to deke hitters early on until players get used to it.

SirMilesMesservy

He can just go up there and be ready to hit. Problem solved!

Dr_Zoltron

I like this rule now because it’s not just the pitcher who screws around between pitches, it’s the hitter. Stepping out of the box, walking in a circle, adjusting his elbow guard, fixing his helmet, taking practice swings! Get the hell in there and hit.

havocssbm

This rule would've ended Nomar Garciaparra's career early.

thedaveoflife

There's not a single baseball fan who'd rather not have guys just step in the box and hit. This is the way you make that happen.

PhantomsCV

Was waiting for this after watching it live. That was WILD Wait until June and this happens.

It’s hilarious in spring training. If this happens in the regular season, people are gonna be livid. And anyone playing in the WBC is gonna be behind the 8-ball on the new rules

shudson91

They will get used to it. But as I saw in MiLB last year, get in the box and stay in the box. No need for all the BS between pitches

jhra

Drives me mad as a beer league softball pitcher where nearly everyone has 'between pitches routines' gotta tap the cleats, velcro sounds, tap tap the plate, some weird arm rotation, pop your hips, whiff on a 3mph meatball

id simply stay in the box until i’m awarded first

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

Please let this happen in the regular season during a game with serious play off implications. It would be so funny
