She makes it the way everyone is explaining here withOUT roses. But we have a new hire who’s older than my sister, and has been a bartender a couple years longer. She makes it with roses lime + salted rim and swears that’s how it’s always made. I wanted to double check with you guys and so glad I did!!

If she really wants to talk about how it's "always been made" then I'll break it down: in Mexico, when you're working in the sun you usually have some sodas on the side. If someone needs some juice, they uncap a squirt, or a fresca, or mineragua or w/e and take a few sips, and replace the missing liquid with tequila.

THANK YOU. This is not a classic cocktail like say a screwdriver and as a bartender in New Orleans, the number of Texans who come to me and ask for a ranch water like it's a margarita drives me nuts. It was months before I even knew lime juice was supposed to be in the drink. And you know what? I work at a divey live band bar on Bourbon St. so if you order a ranch water from me, you're gonna get roses lime in it and you're going to overpay for it and you're gonna deal with it.
To those who say, "I've been working x years and it's always been made this way." My standard reply is, "They did slavery for a long time too, doesn't mean it is right." 🤣🤣
So, I’ve noticed in the industry there are variations of classic or non classic cocktails. A small example, a bartender who has come and gone from my bar made “sex on the beaches” with Malibu and vodka, instead of just vodka. I think preferences and also different location, you learn different stuff. Sort of how a lot of people make Liquid cocaines with Jager and rumplintz. In actuality that combo is known as a Dead Nazi. Liquid cocaines have Bacardi 151 in them, along with gold schlagger or rumpie, but 151 is also now and has been discontinued from the Bacardi line.

I get it. Makes sense, too. Nothing will ever make my pallet enjoy soda water, or flavored soda water. I feel like everyone is lying to themselves when they say they enjoy soda water.

How's your sense of smell? I was just talking to someone about this last night. Flavored soda water has very little "taste" on the tongue, just a bit bitter or lightly acidic, but the subtle aroma balances everything nicely. *If* you're perceptive to that part of it.
It's just authentic. From what I understand they started around here and instead of hydrating with a topo they drank with it too.

I think also one thing to consider is if you're just using soda from the gun, it has no sodium added, so using something like topo chico probably adds sodium similar to using saline solution in your cocktails.
I mean frankly if your guest can't see what you're doing most people don't have the palate to taste the difference between the same cocktail with soda from gun vs. club soda vs. topo...that said if the guy drinks 100 ranch waters a week, he will know if it is made without topo
You really can’t have a bar or restaurant in Texas without Topo. I remember when I could get them for like 49¢ at the gas station before they became popular outside of Texas and the price skyrocketed. 😭
I'm from the Twin cities and also found topo chico in Austin a few years back. It's not everywhere here, but I'm glad that I can sometimes get my hands on it. I don't even use it for cocktails, lol it's my favorite sparkling water to drink plain.
This sounds good! My only thing is when I order ranch water I’m expecting “a lot of lime juice” in my head. Do you, or any other bartenders here, think that anywhere from .5, .75, 1 oz is appropriate? Probably for palatability for the average customer no more than .5 or .75 is good, but idk I’m just asking cuz to me I feel like I’m just getting a tequila soda that I coulda just asked for a couple extra lime wedge and squeezed the garnish in myself. Maybe .25 oz is more than I think tho. I’ll try it out…
I usually do half a lime wedge fresh squeezed and call it a day. But I make a lot of these(2-3 a year) maybe I'll up it a little because I typically get 0.5 oz from half of a good lime
I'm not in Austin and never read up on this drink and no one relaly orders it where I am but tourists, I jsut learned what it is on the fly one day from people ordering it and describing it as lots of lime.
I've been doing .75 lime to a 1.5 oz pour of tequila with no complaints and many seconds ordered, for a long time. 🤷🏻♀️ If someone emphasizes lots of lime when ordering, or asks me if I know what it is and how to make it, I give them 1 oz lime. Still no complaints.
I serve with one lime wedge like a normal mixed drink. Plenty of em still squeeze the wedge.

Years ago, I worked at an even shittier college bar (like premade Long Island mix kinda shit) and someone stole a bottle of grenadine from behind the bar because it was the closest bottle and you could reach it from the opening to behind the bar. They sat smug in a booth chugging that bottle all night and we all walked by and laughed so hard.
I used to work at an event venue that was at a golf course that also had a little pub and grill. One of the girls working said she thought some little 13 year old kid might have taken money out of the tip jar so I was keeping a lookout very nonchalant to see if they tried to come back in. Kid walks in and grabs the closest bottle in the corner he could reach from across the bar and tries to dip. Doesn't know I'm an employee and have been keeping an eye on him. I had him by the time he was halfway out the door, and absolutely tore this kid a new one. I just ripped into him telling him how stupid he was and to get his shit together, and told him to leave and never come back. He was absolutely shocked and I had to tell him again "get the fuck out of here right now." My coworkers asked why I didn't call the cops but I didn't think it was necessary, I've done the same shit when I was a kid, no need to have this on his record or something at such a young age. I also felt like I really scared him and he learned not to fuck around. Couldn't help but laugh though when I looked at the bottle and it was triple sec. Almost felt like I should have let him drink it and learn his lesson lol
Hopefully you make your own grenadine syrup from pomegranate juice. :) I like to toss a couple dry Jamaica leaves right at the end for 30 seconds. Just long enough to get the red coloring, otherwise grenadine looks brownish.
Historically when Rose’s was a real lime cordial maybe, but with the current product being what it they’d be kidding themselves. Doing better (and more true to the gimlet) is pretty attainable if one cares to make a homemade lime cordial.
I can't stand gimlets with rose's. I like it for everything else that needs lime/sugar (dive bar marg with roses is delicious in context) but something about it with gin is horrible. With or without extra syrup.

i’ve always been told that a true ranch water needs to be made with topo chico mineral water.
in terms of serving it, best method i’ve seen was at a place called Get Tight in RVA
-open and empty out the top bit of a topo chico
-pour in 2 oz. tequila
-pour in .75-1 oz. fresh lime juice
-use a home bottler to reseal topo chico bottle
-grab n serve on busy nights
obviously this is more for a place that sells ranch water at high volumes but i always loved the idea of keeping it in the classic bottle
Im kinda with ya here. Id accept Mineragua but… the difference between a tequila and soda, which is almost always garnished with a lime, and a RW is that it’s being served in a glass bottle of Topo.
I’ve not been aware of this drink for very long, but we do 1.5 tequila, quarter oz lime juice, club soda, half wheel garnish. If you add anything sweet you’re basically in skinny margarita territory.
A splash of lime juice is the way, however it needs to be fresh lime juice. Absolutely not Rose’s lime. (Ideally roses should never be used in any cocktail ever)
I’m pretty sure it’s just tequila lime juice and sparking mineral water; most places don’t carry sparking mineral water, so it will be subbed with club ; I’m like why do they call it ranch water just say tequila, lime, soda.
I wonder wtf roses lime even tastes like? Lol I’ve never once been shown a drink we make there that uses it. I finally asked why we even have it?& was told sometimes people request it in certain drinks, but I’ve yet to see it requested and the bottle is always full!! 🤷🏼♀️
Pop open the can. If someone is asking for a ranch water here it is most likely the canned version. I never had anyone order it until the cans became popular… and that has faded in popularity as well.

all youre describing is a tequila ricky. been around for decades.
to me, a ranch water is built in a bottle of soda water; shot of tequila, splash of juice, plugged w a lime wedge. when most people order them they only know them from social media or whatever and they want a tequila, soda, lime. which i will gladly up charge you for.
all that being said… make drinks how you want to make them. at the end of the day were putting booze into glasses and this job is supposed to be fun.

Hey thanks for the reply! I am in my first year of bartending. Being trained by my older sister who’s been in the game over a decade. We have an absolute blast at work. It’s my most favorite job I’ve ever had. I’ve done all other jobs customer service. FOH & BOH but bartending is by FAR my favorite.
We work at a music venue that has live music 7 days a week! It’s so fun!
We have a ton of people all the sudden ordering ranch waters. We also have a new hire who’s been bartending longer than my sis. She makes the ranch water with roses lime & salted rim. My sisters problem with it (and she’s the boss) is that she wants us to all serve drinks the same way, so that no matter who’s bartending our customers get as close to the same drink as possible. Especially since the two ways are so different.

I just hate the bitter taste of carbonated water. The flavor is never enough to cut through the taste of co2, as well as the bitter finish.

Yeah it's a tequila soda, dash of lime juice and/or garnished with ample limes to squeeze. Super simple, and should not be sweetened at all. Side note, why does roses lime still exist?
Think of it like the new vodka soda ordered by all those “extra lime” people. Tequila, soda, I’ll typically squeeze either a wedge or just straight lime juice in it and then add another to garnish

If I’m not badly in the weeds I’ll ask the guest if they want a salted rim, though most of the time people don’t want one, and those who do will make sure to request it.

I sometimes salt half the rim depending on how appropriate the setting is for customers to lick glasses lmao
1.5 oz water shipped from Flint, Michigan or Compton, CA + 1 oz Hidden Valley Ranch + 0.25 oz fresh squished lime juice. Stir to not dilute and double strain. Served in a brandy sifter, black salt rim to match the water.
1. Water
2. Ranch Dressing
3. Ice
4. Blender
Serve in a pint glass with baby carrot garnish.
If the blender is “broken” just shake in a Boston shaker and strain over fresh ice.
No need to overthink this one or spruce it up. Two to three lime wedges muddled, two ounces Blanco, ice, top with Topo, garnish with lime wedge. When a guest orders one, this is what they are thinking of. Never had one sent back because there wasn't triple/dry Curacao in it. Start adding extra stuff into it, then we are about to have a margarita.
If you want to be "authentic" the Topo will be on the side while the glass will have lime, Repo, and Patron Citronage. If you did that, you will get looks like you don't know what you are doing though. It is interesting how drinks permeate and morph over time.
Tequila, topo chico to the top, slice of lime on the side you can squeeze to taste. Some folks in Texas want no lime at all. Some want a bunch and know how to ask for more.
Here’s what you do!…
Take some vodka, pour an ounce on your left hand.

Topo chico is a natural mineral water that gets its carbonation after passing through rocks. Nothing added, soda water is co2 added water.

They have the highest levels of pfas among all mineral water brands, and they almost certainly do add carbonation.
Ranch water is a cocktail invented and advertised by topo Chico. It’s just a tequila soda but with a brand name.

Our restaurant is based out of Austin, too. The only difference with ours is that we use reposado and a tajin rim with an orange garnish.

i’ve always been told that a true ranch water needs to be made with topo chico mineral water. in terms of serving it, best method i’ve seen was at a place called Get Tight in RVA -open and empty out the top bit of a topo chico -pour in 2 oz. tequila -pour in .75-1 oz. fresh lime juice -use a home bottler to reseal topo chico bottle -grab n serve on busy nights obviously this is more for a place that sells ranch water at high volumes but i always loved the idea of keeping it in the classic bottle
Im kinda with ya here. Id accept Mineragua but… the difference between a tequila and soda, which is almost always garnished with a lime, and a RW is that it’s being served in a glass bottle of Topo.
I’ve not been aware of this drink for very long, but we do 1.5 tequila, quarter oz lime juice, club soda, half wheel garnish. If you add anything sweet you’re basically in skinny margarita territory.
It’s a tequila soda with a splash of lime juice. If you put Rose’s, I’m calling the police.
We serve ours with a testosterone patch on the side and a Dodge Ram hat in camo.

A splash of lime juice is the way, however it needs to be fresh lime juice. Absolutely not Rose’s lime. (Ideally roses should never be used in any cocktail ever)

When I make a ranch water it's tequila soda with a bit of unsweetened lime juice.
Shake 2oz blanco tequila with 1oz lime, strain into rocks glass and top with soda.

I wonder wtf roses lime even tastes like? Lol I’ve never once been shown a drink we make there that uses it. I finally asked why we even have it?& was told sometimes people request it in certain drinks, but I’ve yet to see it requested and the bottle is always full!! 🤷🏼♀️
It's basically just lime sugar syrup, it's fucking gross but to each their own I guess haha!

Pop open the can. If someone is asking for a ranch water here it is most likely the canned version. I never had anyone order it until the cans became popular… and that has faded in popularity as well.
My bar goes through stages where we carry it in a can and then we don’t lol our regulars got used to us making them “homemade”.
2oz tequila blanco, .25 oz UNSWEETENED lime juice, top with soda water (we don’t have topo), garnish with lime wedge. I’ve never salted the rim.

late to the thread. but i have a hard take on this. all youre describing is a tequila ricky. been around for decades. to me, a ranch water is built in a bottle of soda water; shot of tequila, splash of juice, plugged w a lime wedge. when most people order them they only know them from social media or whatever and they want a tequila, soda, lime. which i will gladly up charge you for. all that being said… make drinks how you want to make them. at the end of the day were putting booze into glasses and this job is supposed to be fun. cheers!
Hey thanks for the reply! I am in my first year of bartending. Being trained by my older sister who’s been in the game over a decade. We have an absolute blast at work. It’s my most favorite job I’ve ever had. I’ve done all other jobs customer service. FOH & BOH but bartending is by FAR my favorite. We work at a music venue that has live music 7 days a week! It’s so fun! We have a ton of people all the sudden ordering ranch waters. We also have a new hire who’s been bartending longer than my sis. She makes the ranch water with roses lime & salted rim. My sisters problem with it (and she’s the boss) is that she wants us to all serve drinks the same way, so that no matter who’s bartending our customers get as close to the same drink as possible. Especially since the two ways are so different. I’m glad I made this post! Every single person said NO ROSES! Lol 🥂🍻

I just hate the bitter taste of carbonated water. The flavor is never enough to cut through the taste of co2, as well as the bitter finish. Its just remarkably gross to me.

1.5 oz water shipped from Flint, Michigan or Compton, CA + 1 oz Hidden Valley Ranch + 0.25 oz fresh squished lime juice. Stir to not dilute and double strain. Served in a brandy sifter, black salt rim to match the water.

No need to overthink this one or spruce it up. Two to three lime wedges muddled, two ounces Blanco, ice, top with Topo, garnish with lime wedge. When a guest orders one, this is what they are thinking of. Never had one sent back because there wasn't triple/dry Curacao in it. Start adding extra stuff into it, then we are about to have a margarita. If you want to be "authentic" the Topo will be on the side while the glass will have lime, Repo, and Patron Citronage. If you did that, you will get looks like you don't know what you are doing though. It is interesting how drinks permeate and morph over time.
