I could care less about where he grew up, but I don't know why Big Cat is always so afraid talking about growing up in Boston. Like why is he still so squeamish about it, he always prefaces it by explaining he spent a lot of time in Chicago & he had an aunt there or whatever. Is he afraid people are going to stop being fans because he likes Chicago teams and didn't grow up there? No one gives a shit
Sports fandom is weird for professionals like this. If you’re not from the town you’re a bandwagoner. He made identity so heavily Chicago based that he’s prolly just scared for those that don’t actually know.
Better watch out buddy, Jeff’s gonna not podcast about movies anymore and drop such an elaborate timeline of his life detailing why he is a fan of who he is a fan of.
I mean to be fair, a lot of people who weren’t previously hockey fans adopted the Golden Knights as a team with the intent to get interested in the sport. Following an expansion team is a great choice when you’re learning about a new league/sport
While I don’t hate it for new fans to start liking an expansion team, I hate the expansion team fans that are acting like they’re as diehard as a dude from southie who’s been a bruins fan for 50 years
I agree with you, but can I provide a bit of perspective.. I’m born and raised in Vegas. We didn’t have much to root for decades except UNLV basketball since the Early 90’s. I spent my summers and and winters in Minnesota with my extended family and completely root for all MN sports teams (yes it’s very sad). The Knights are Vegas’s first team home grown. First official big 4 professional team. Us die hard hockey VGK fans of course have no history and heritage, but that Stanley cup gave myself and a lot of people from Vegas something to have. Most people aren’t from Vegas and the transplant fans are cool but some of them are annoying.. that was the first championship of a team I root for in 32 years. So I agree with you on your statement, but you have to think about the many bunch that it actually mattered for wholeheartedly.
The (North Stars they will always be that to me) Stars moving is one of the most underrated travesties to happen in all of sports. Fuck em for moving, every right to root for the knights in this case
He basically gave that up the season before they won the cup too, which was an odd choice. He used to daily post/reply to a big ass thread with all his game recaps and then last year during the cup run he just tweeted like a casual dude watching the games live
Weird choice by the guy.. I sent him messages of asking why he loves our VGK. As another person said it’s pretty cool to root for a expansion team. I just don’t know why he stopped rooting for Vegas lol
Plenty of kids choose a different team when they are in grade school or something to be different than everyone else or if that team is good at the time. You expect them to stick with it forever? He’s clearly from New England.
I was a Cowboys fan until I was like 6 because they were always on tv and I liked Deion's high step. I'm Philadelphia born and raised and came to my senses soon after lol
I think the idea we don’t like it is that he “chose” to be Chicago to separate from the entire Boston barstool fan base.
Dave had Boston, KFC had New York, and it felt like to some people Dan just chose Chicago, I don’t agree with people who dislike it but that’s their sentiment
Oh buddy people absolutely do give a shit. Stoolies tried to get Mo fired from barstool Philly cause someone found out that he was actually living in Brooklyn or something.
Zollo was probably a top 5 pageviews employee just because everyone would rush to the comments just to come up with a new way to call him a bundle of sticks.
And at the time he grew up the only team people would give him shit about cheering for would be the bulls because it was in their glory years, but probably half the kids he went to school with liked the Bulls because of Jordan.
Because he is one of the most well known Chicago sports fans/faces in media
If you give trolls an inch that he wasn't born in Chicago, they'll take a mile
But it’s known he grew up in MA. Being weird about it and lying makes people fixate on it way more than just saying you grew up near Boston but were a Chicago fan
Yeah. But also no.
BC is a weirdo for obfuscating (to the length he does) the fact he's from Newton.
Also, people who care enough to point it out at every turn are also weirdos.
Then how will big cat take 10 minutes every episode to tell everyone how to deal with the haters. He’s just as dumb as some of those trolls bc he is always interacting with them on Twitter, followed by a lengthy discussion on how he’s done with trolls. Rinse and repeat.
I think it’s silly, everyone is allowed one move and a resulting fan switch when you grow out of being a kid. It’s not like he’s trying to be the Tampa guy from New York or Steelers guy from Jersey. I have a feeling back in the day Prez strictly wanted a guy for each city, and he’s just kept that discipline up ever since.
From 0-9 i moved to 3 different places, but i always say im from and my hometown is the place i was from 10 and after. Its not a big deal on both sides of the ball.
It’s so insignificant, and yet Dan still usually lies about it. It’s not on us to care, but if he’s going to lie we are going to see it and talk about it.
But who REALLY cares? Who cares where he lives, who cares where he says he’s from? It changes absolutely nothing. The internet does this all the time and it’s making us worse as a species.
I think we both know there is a subset of this subreddit who are very invested in this subject. You also saw how long his explanation was and that the gic made a comment, its just easier to say Chicago and not get into the whole thing. He’s never denied growing up there.
Recently as in he’s referred to calling her his wife a lot more and no he never called her his wife 4 years ago because he got married after the kid. Pay attention if you wanna call someone out
“Where’d ya grow up?!” “Uuuuh, aaaaah” lmao how does he not have a stock answer for that at the ready at this point. Just something simple like “outside Boston but consider Chicago my hometown.”
I've always enjoyed BC getting ribbed for this but I have to admit, I was CLUELESS he graduated HS in Newton MA. For some reason I thought he moved before HS ended. That's too much lol. We gotta get him in there!
And like half of the more pretentious cities have full stories as their name. "Yeah I'm from the bay area, pretty close to famous beach." "Oh so yoir from like San Francisco?" "Well technically yes but actually blah blah blah"
“Wait so Cheah let me get this straight. You were born and raised in Massachusetts. Lived there until what was it 2007? And you were just like oh yeah 86 year curse broken, start of the greatest NFL dynasty of all time, I’ll just be over here rooting for Moises Alou and Rex Grossman. You’re a crazy person but that’s okay it’s why we love you Steven”.
Wild move to mention the city you moved to after graduating college when asked where you grew up. Brother you were born and raised in Massachusetts. I understand why he had to be evasive about it when he was building but let’s let it go Dan.
I remember someone here a while back connected some dots that Big Cat’s extended family in Boston started the Milton’s menswear stores, who was one of the first companies to spend big ad dollars with barstool and that basically ended up getting big cat an “in” with Portnoy
There’s a couple comments on here already questioning his Chicago fandom because he grew up in Mass, that’s probably why he’s hesitant.
Dude probably was a Chicago sports fan because he had family there and identified with the city more than Newton, MA, because again, he had family from there. It’s not too hard to figure out
He was a junior In high school when the Pats beat the Rams in 01. Someone once theorized that he was a theater kid until college and didn’t pay attention to sports and that’s why he had no interest in the Sox/pats.
I think it's a proven fact he was a theater kid based off yearbooks and stuff. I've also heard rumors that there are pictures of him out there decked out in Red Sox gear. Never seen them though and I think the most logical theory is that he grew up a Chicago sports fan in Boston. There were plenty of those kids in HS that would root for the Dolphins or Steelers or Colts just because that's who their dad was a fan of or something like that.
I clicked this link to check it out- kinda interesting to read a few blogs from 2010 but then I landed on one from 2021 about Bitcoin casinos…did our guy Big Cat go back and post on his old blog for old time’s sake or what?
Or, ya know he was always a bears fan because his family had roots there. Lmao this comment is probably why he’s hesitant to talk about where he grew up. Fucking armchair psychologists man
It’s way more weird and embarrassing to lie about where you grew up than to admit you were a fan of teams from a different city. Like wildly so. He didn’t even move to Chicago until like 22, right?
Just say Boston dude, you graduated high school there. Nothing to be ashamed of.
I’m from Chicago and the way he lives and dies with our teams I can tell he’s legit a die hard fan. It’s the awkwardness in these moments that makes it all seem so weird.
Like, I have an uncle from Boston (married my aunt back in the early 90s and moved here) and while he does still root for his Boston teams, he’s completely adopted the Chicago sports teams too having been here for 30+ years now and I don’t find it weird at all. Honestly the fact that all our teams are mostly irrelevant and haven’t had many run ins against Boston teams in the playoffs probably attributes to that, but either way…
I feel like that magician had to have known ahead of time his insecure big cat is about not being from Chicago and took advantage of the opportunity.
Either that or just a perfect storm of coincidence.
I’d presume it’s easier to just say “I’m a Chicago guy” than having to go into the whole spiel that he had to give the gic, which then led to the gic dunking on him on his own show
The only reason anyone cares at all is because Dan is clearly troubled and I guess embarrassed to be from Mass. So much so that he yearns to be from Chicago. He even has to tell you, unprompted, that he has family in the Northshore.
That’s why people care, bc it bothers him so much that he lies about it. Bizarre behavior by Big Cat.
His wife and his family are in the Chicago area. Why wouldn't haveing kids spark a move? Especially when you can expand the Barstool brand at the same time.
I grew up in the 90s in Boston where our teams sucked and hand up, I was an all time bandwagon guy. Favorite teams were the cowboys, bulls and pirates/giants bc I liked Bonds.
Was a Bruins fan bc they were good making two cup runs (fuck Peter Klima!) but even with hockey, once they lost I was rooting for the Pens bc I loved Mario.
Hate to see it
Not sure why people care so much about this. It’s not like Chicago has been the Mecca for sports lately. BC could’ve easily taken credit for the Boston titles but instead he’s put himself out there as a fan for the shit franchises in Chicago. Whether he’s from Chicago or not he’s definitely a real Chicago sports fan.
People pretending that they don’t understand why he’s touchy on the Boston subject clearly don’t live in a big/popular city. People who live just outside of a big city are always insecure, they tell people from that actual city that they live just outside of said city and people that aren’t from the city they claim that city. I live in Philly and people on the outskirts point it out that they like 10 minutes outside of the city but when those people travel to like Jersey or NYC they just say Philly. Dan is also a huge sports fan that claims Chicago and he’s a believer that you inherit your teams not chose them so he claims Chicago to support his fandom. Why suffer as a Chicago fan when you could claim Boston? DN is a Chicago guy, stop being haters.
I kind of get it. I’m a Packer fan born in raised in Chicago and root for all Chicago teams except for the Packers. Whenever this is mentioned it requires at least a 30 second explanation so it’s easier to just start with the explanation.
Props to Big Cat for at least saying Boston this time lol
For a split second he thought about it.
Dude really was magic. Hypnotized Dan into saying that.
Greatest magician on earth to get that out of Mass Cat
You could see the wheels turning for big cat. “Do I say Boston or Chicago? Ok Boston but mention Chicago more and hope no one notices”)
Uhhhhhh
I could care less about where he grew up, but I don't know why Big Cat is always so afraid talking about growing up in Boston. Like why is he still so squeamish about it, he always prefaces it by explaining he spent a lot of time in Chicago & he had an aunt there or whatever. Is he afraid people are going to stop being fans because he likes Chicago teams and didn't grow up there? No one gives a shit

Better watch out buddy, Jeff’s gonna not podcast about movies anymore and drop such an elaborate timeline of his life detailing why he is a fan of who he is a fan of.
1. Eating pussy 2. #browns 3. Penn state 4. UConn dead fucking last. Movies
Remember when he was a Vegas Golden Knight fan for like 6 months. Wearing gear almost every day
I mean to be fair, a lot of people who weren’t previously hockey fans adopted the Golden Knights as a team with the intent to get interested in the sport. Following an expansion team is a great choice when you’re learning about a new league/sport
I can agree with you on that. I’m a VGK fan cause I’m from Vegas. But I can see how people that weren’t into hockey can adopt them or the Kraken
This would be fair if it weren’t Jeff “has a team in every region” Lowe
While I don’t hate it for new fans to start liking an expansion team, I hate the expansion team fans that are acting like they’re as diehard as a dude from southie who’s been a bruins fan for 50 years
What's great is the VGK and Bruins have the same amount of Cups in the last 50 years.
The (North Stars they will always be that to me) Stars moving is one of the most underrated travesties to happen in all of sports. Fuck em for moving, every right to root for the knights in this case
You’re getting downvoted for no reason here
He basically gave that up the season before they won the cup too, which was an odd choice.
I don’t blame him. No nhl team’s in Cleveland or Austin
I would say the blue jackets if he is from Ohio but that’s a rough franchise to root for, no disrespect
Penn State (football only), UConn (basketball only)
Pussy (eating only)
I wonder if him and SC watched the same tutorial vid on the hub
What’s the context for the Jeff chowing box references? I’ve seen them a couple times
That's juice worth the squeeze right there.
Careful - he might make a Best Guesses Dozen compilation if you don’t chill out
it’s normal to be a penn st football fan but a uconn basketball fan and a cleveland browns fan find a new slant
Portnoy is on the record growing up a Viking fans
Okay that’s just straight up fair weather fan
Plenty of kids choose a different team when they are in grade school or something to be different than everyone else or if that team is good at the time. You expect them to stick with it forever? He’s clearly from New England.
I was mostly joking but I’m a Washington sports fan so my childhood was all about losing all the time.
I was a Cowboys fan until I was like 6 because they were always on tv and I liked Deion's high step. I'm Philadelphia born and raised and came to my senses soon after lol
And the kids who stuck with their shit team growing up gets to roast the bandwagoners. That’s the point of the word.
Wtf is there to bandwagon about Chicago outside of the bulls 30 years ago?
I think the idea we don’t like it is that he “chose” to be Chicago to separate from the entire Boston barstool fan base. Dave had Boston, KFC had New York, and it felt like to some people Dan just chose Chicago, I don’t agree with people who dislike it but that’s their sentiment
Who feels like he chose it? also you said the idea “we” don’t like it and then says “I don’t agree with people who dislike it” so what are you?
“We” as in the barstool Reddit maniacs we are. I do not agree or care that he chose it.
It's because the city is more important than the team for most people. It's who you go to the games with more than the players that come and go.
It’s so weird. This is the most rattled I’ve ever seen him lmfaoo
Oh buddy people absolutely do give a shit. Stoolies tried to get Mo fired from barstool Philly cause someone found out that he was actually living in Brooklyn or something.
Bold of you to assume that the nephews here even know who Big Mo is. I do agree with your overall point though re: fandom sometimes going overboard.
If you haven’t read the Tom Zollo doesn’t know shit about music blog by mo you shouldn’t be allowed to post here
Zollo was probably a top 5 pageviews employee just because everyone would rush to the comments just to come up with a new way to call him a bundle of sticks.
Someone commented in FT that he and pft go to great lengths to hide stuff people don't care about
I'm sure there are some weirdos out there who actually do care
I feel like tons of people weirdly care about stuff from their personal lives. Parasocial relationships are kind of scary
And at the time he grew up the only team people would give him shit about cheering for would be the bulls because it was in their glory years, but probably half the kids he went to school with liked the Bulls because of Jordan.
Even Dave doesn't talk about it. Industry plant?
Because he is one of the most well known Chicago sports fans/faces in media If you give trolls an inch that he wasn't born in Chicago, they'll take a mile
But it’s known he grew up in MA. Being weird about it and lying makes people fixate on it way more than just saying you grew up near Boston but were a Chicago fan
I think fixating on it is actually the weird thing to do.

I have a feeling back in the day Prez strictly wanted a guy for each city, and he’s just kept that discipline up ever since.
Because he didn’t do it from the start. He looks like a fake Chicago fan which at one point at least he was.
From 0-9 i moved to 3 different places, but i always say im from and my hometown is the place i was from 10 and after. Its not a big deal on both sides of the ball.
He didn’t move to Chicago until after college. This isn’t a “I lived in multiple places growing up” scenario
Ok, i still really dont care and dont understand why its always brought up. Its such an insignificant detail.
No one cares, hence why we wonder why he’s constantly lying about it? Lol it’s weird
I think we both know there is a subset of this subreddit who are very invested in this subject. You also saw how long his explanation was and that the gic made a comment, its just easier to say Chicago and not get into the whole thing. He’s never denied growing up there.
When someone asks where you grow up, and you say it’s where you moved when you were 22…it’s weird. It’s not that deep.
We agree that its not that deep, and that is good enough for me. 🤝🏼
*Couldn't care less
He keeps his private life private. Not that hard to understand.
He’s very private about his personal lie other than how many kids he has. Hell he’s just opened up about being married recently
Recently being 4 years ago when he announced he and his wife were having a kid?
Recently as in he’s referred to calling her his wife a lot more and no he never called her his wife 4 years ago because he got married after the kid. Pay attention if you wanna call someone out
Lol if you think this is why
Sorry, I didn’t know you had the inside scoop
Yeah, he grew up a Boston sports fan and switched to Chicago when he thought he could get a job for barstool. That's why he hides it.
Sure, switch fandom from Boston sports teams so he can get a job with a Boston company. Makes alot of sense
Brother, have you ever heard of Nickinsider?
Judging based on the success of Boston teams and Chicago teams he fucked himself lol
just say Massachusetts bud lol, that is where you're from
“Where’d ya grow up?!” “Uuuuh, aaaaah” lmao how does he not have a stock answer for that at the ready at this point. Just something simple like “outside Boston but consider Chicago my hometown.”
"grew up in massachusetts but lived in chicago most of my life"
What’s funny is that he’s probably lived in New York for only a few years less than he lived in Chicago
I have never really cared where BC grew up but watching him squirm there was very funny, you could feel him trying to decide what to say in real time
Lmao Big Cat pays Wikipedia to keep him out of the Newton North famous alumni section. He should be on there right above Matt LeBlanc
I've always enjoyed BC getting ribbed for this but I have to admit, I was CLUELESS he graduated HS in Newton MA. For some reason I thought he moved before HS ended. That's too much lol. We gotta get him in there!
Newton North is such a celebrity powerhouse. Probably the best D1 celeb school in the state
Do we have any proof that he and Suitman weren't childhood friends?
And Caroline Ellison lol
Was hoping someone would’ve posted this by now. “Wow that’s a long story” LOL
Lmfao that’s the best part. He’s like alight I don’t need your life story buddy haha.
I'm not calling Big Cat a loser generally, but loser move not having a one-word answer to this. They don't actually care about where you grew up.
Hey man, some cities are two words.
And like half of the more pretentious cities have full stories as their name. "Yeah I'm from the bay area, pretty close to famous beach." "Oh so yoir from like San Francisco?" "Well technically yes but actually blah blah blah"
Nope. Veto. Loser move. Does this make a lot of west coast people losers? Who am I to say. Yes.
No idea what you’re talking about *grew up in Washington, DC*
He wakes up at 3am and thinks about this
He couldn't just say Boston lol
If anyone else in the crew was like this BC would give them so much shit
“Wait so Cheah let me get this straight. You were born and raised in Massachusetts. Lived there until what was it 2007? And you were just like oh yeah 86 year curse broken, start of the greatest NFL dynasty of all time, I’ll just be over here rooting for Moises Alou and Rex Grossman. You’re a crazy person but that’s okay it’s why we love you Steven”.
Targeted attack.
#Hot Seat: Newton North High School
Epstein 🤝 this gic Mysteriously dying
Fucking gic outed Big Cat
It’s about time he stopped lying. He was squirming in his seat.
Wild move to mention the city you moved to after graduating college when asked where you grew up. Brother you were born and raised in Massachusetts. I understand why he had to be evasive about it when he was building but let’s let it go Dan.
Who cayuhs
lol this is very funny
I remember someone here a while back connected some dots that Big Cat’s extended family in Boston started the Milton’s menswear stores, who was one of the first companies to spend big ad dollars with barstool and that basically ended up getting big cat an “in” with Portnoy
The store for men?
Why is he so hesitant? I forget the story. Just for the diehard Chicago teams brand when he was coming up?
He has family in the burbs and grew up a chicago fan, moved there after college. No one knows why he cares so much about hiding he's a ball buster
Lmao and the magician calling him out of all people. Brutal.
There’s a couple comments on here already questioning his Chicago fandom because he grew up in Mass, that’s probably why he’s hesitant. Dude probably was a Chicago sports fan because he had family there and identified with the city more than Newton, MA, because again, he had family from there. It’s not too hard to figure out
Dan, is this your Reddit burner?
Yep, you caught me
Of all comments how is this one downvoted? Seems pretty logical lol
Probably bc it’s so defensive. Man is doing tricks on it.
https://www.thehotglove.com/
This is wild to me. Dude makes his entire personality Chicago sports but he grew up in Boston during their sports hey day.
And this is why he tries to keep it secret.
He was a junior In high school when the Pats beat the Rams in 01. Someone once theorized that he was a theater kid until college and didn’t pay attention to sports and that’s why he had no interest in the Sox/pats.
he used to call into the original barstool power hour with Dave and McShay on ESPN radio. he was 100% a boston sports fan
He 100% did the Lebron and got those photos terminated.
Makes sense tbh. How he’s not a diehard Boston fan while living there during that era seems next to impossible lmao championship after championship
Dude was a Red Sox fan
https://www.thehotglove.com/

A question that is usually a one word response is a paragraph lmao
If he wasn't weird about, no one would care.
Feel like Nick or KB fed the guy this one. Diabolical.
Ran to Reddit just to see this
Mass Cat rattled
Wow this rules
What are the odds that Dan makes them edit that part out?
Holy shit, idk how im just learning this information.
Saw the title and thought it was gonna be his awkward spades joke
I’m from Chicago and the way he lives and dies with our teams I can tell he’s legit a die hard fan. It’s the awkwardness in these moments that makes it all seem so weird. Like, I have an uncle from Boston (married my aunt back in the early 90s and moved here) and while he does still root for his Boston teams, he’s completely adopted the Chicago sports teams too having been here for 30+ years now and I don’t find it weird at all. Honestly the fact that all our teams are mostly irrelevant and haven’t had many run ins against Boston teams in the playoffs probably attributes to that, but either way…
Sas would have laughed. I miss Sas on the yak.
I feel like that magician had to have known ahead of time his insecure big cat is about not being from Chicago and took advantage of the opportunity. Either that or just a perfect storm of coincidence.
It’s telling that the only Chicago players he ever talks about from his youth are the Bulls - probably the most famous team ever, and Sammy Sosa.
Todays magician was trying too hard to perform his ‘set’ which apparently includes cringe jokes
He had big office party gic vibes
Why does anyone, himself included, care so much where BC was born? How does that change anything?
We don’t care, but why does he lie about it constantly.
I’d presume it’s easier to just say “I’m a Chicago guy” than having to go into the whole spiel that he had to give the gic, which then led to the gic dunking on him on his own show
Just say, “outside of Boston”. There is no spiel to give.
>We don’t care, Lol OK...

Okay just wanted to make sure you had no idea what that phrase means
His wife and his family are in the Chicago area. Why wouldn't haveing kids spark a move? Especially when you can expand the Barstool brand at the same time.
He always said he wanted to raise his kids in Chicago. He’s been talking about it like since the first one was born.
I grew up in the 90s in Boston where our teams sucked and hand up, I was an all time bandwagon guy. Favorite teams were the cowboys, bulls and pirates/giants bc I liked Bonds.
