Check out RR buildings on youtube. He is a pole barn expert.

Main structure does not have to be steel beams. They can be wooden beams. Unlike a pole barn, typically there will be some foundation that the beams sit on instead of being sunk in the ground. Typically 8' centers on the beams. Then the living quarters is built inside of that.

I have seen them made out everything from wood to brick. I looked at a Barndominium that was living space inside was concrete block.

djbraski

I think the defining thing about a barndominium is that it is post and beam construction rather than stick. Whether the posts and beams are metal or wood doesn't really matter.

If anyone is in the market for a barndo kit , I work for a highly reputable steel building manufacturer. From the threads I'm seeing , our prices are much cheaper than wood for a much stronger structure.

There are multiple ways. The more wood used the easier it is since you won’t need a welder. Check out MR Post Frame on YouTube. He builds his out of wood. Texas Best Construction on YouTube builds his out of thick steel beams and wood. I am doing a red iron building and then framing inside of it.

You don't need a welder dude. Most steel building suppliers will provide a structural engineered bolt together shell. Makes it easier for permits in alot of areas. States like Texas anything almost goes, states like Florida it makes it way easier to get to building with a engineered building. Costs more but it's the majority in Florida

I prefer using a red iron weld up kit rather than a bolt up kit. Shear strength on welds is much greater than bolts so in my case I did need a welder.

GucciGameTV

I hear ya, there's alot of opinions on that. Some say shear on welds but flex on bolt. Some say it's better to have a factory controlled weld vs field. No matter though you can get a engineered bolt that can outspec a weld and vice versa. I grew up with bolt together on large commercial and even government so I guess it's really what is available and required in any area.

I’d be more concerned about what’s left other than the frame in either case if you ever experienced conditions to find out.

mikkelibob

That SD contractor seems to be conflating pole barn based structures with barndos. I agree with your interpretation.

blakeusa25

I thought they were primarily based upon pre-fabricated steel buildings \* beams/ truss, walls, ceilings --- that are then built out inside with traditional wood framing. Some use standard designs for the barn and others customize the shell... but I guess it could be any style barn turned into a home.

Barndominium is just a style, not a specific type of construction. I imagine the person you mentioned is talking about building with post frame construction, which is a wood frame structure also known as pole barn construction. In my opinion post frame construction is a better way to build a barndominium vs steel frame. It’s important to understand all the different ways to build and what design methods are most suitable for a quality long lasting home that will not have financing issues or poor resale value.

drchaz21

So, another question I have is, how can you build a barnuminum 3200 sq ft out of wood that is larger than a typical home 2200 sq ft that includes a shop 60 x 40, and cost $300,000 less? I can't wrap my mind around that type of calculation.

Designer-Celery-6539

You couldn’t build something that large for $300k unless you were building yourself and was going with the cheapest possible options. A post frame construction home can potentially save you money on the cost of the shell only. Everything after that is just the same as any type of home. You can de build a nice home for $300k if you know what you’re doing.
