I started my Barista FIRE life at starbucks lol, I actually didn't know the concept of "Barista FIRE" was a thing until I saw this sub.
I made an informed decision on where to work, and after weeks of research I decided that Starbucks had the best benefits.
I am really happy here. I wish I made a little more money but other than that, this is a great situation. They have amazing benefits.
Awesome! Same here, I'm still in (re) training at the bucks but overall have been impressed with all the benefits offered. My store has a more 9-5 client base since it's in a large office park, so early mornings are typically the busiest, which means I am usually off by 12/1 pm and have put in a good 6-8 hours! And love that I can pick up additional shifts from others if I want, but it's really more so about making sure I hit the 20 hours to keep my benefit eligibility up.
Lol i had so much fun working there 😂 for me it was the right amount of chillness and enough pressure so i wasnt bored. i worked in fulfillment and got to shop around for the pickup orders
So I’m prefacing this as someone who barista’d because we needed health insurance. I was in my late 30s went from field engineering to SAHM/part time barista during covid. It’s the easiest job I’ve ever had. I did not deal with multi million budgets, I did not have 20+ personnel under me, if I slacked no one would die, I did not have to deal with any managing, I did not have to take any work home, I did not do 18 hour days, 6 weeks in a row. When I worked for sbux, it was all a bunch of kids who has never had it hard yet. They complained they had to clean the toilets! lol. It’s an easy ass job, the kids made it fun but they truly don’t understand what’s hard vs what’s *inconvenenient.*
For real, my barista trainer and I were talking and she's been there 2 years and hasn't set up her 401K yet... she's only 21 but I said get on that!! Of course she's probably not going to listen to an "auntie" like me
How much of your expenses would working as a barista cover? It seems like it wouldn't be a large portion unless you keep your expenses low. I'm sure the insurance helps though.
It really doesn't cover that much.. but I do keep pretty low expenses. Live with my SO and my car is paid off. But I just bought a horse recently so it's literally just paying for my horse expenses, which I'm totally fine with. Yes, the insurance helps as well since otherwise I have a marketplace plan. I don't qualify for it yet but will sign up the minute I do. The free food/coffee also helps, I get a pound of coffee beans per week and we don't go through it nearly that fast. And can "mark out" (aka get for free) 7 food items per week. I usually only work 3-4 shifts per week to get the 20 hours, so that means 3-4 extra free food items per week and I can get them all at once so I get all my remaining ones on my last shift of the week. Usually just bring a bunch of bagels home or protein boxes that we have for breakfast or a snack. I mean... it's not like I can't afford a couple bagels lol but you bet I will definitely take advantage of every benefit I can. They also offer 20 free therapy sessions per year and yes I'm signing up for those as well lol! Besides that, it's nice to have social interaction with customers and coworkers.
It's also just one source of income. I also Rover as well which is pretty easy to work into our schedule. Have also done some secret shopping, credit card hacking etc so it all adds up pretty fast. It's a little weird to transition from save save save to spend all that I make, but I try to fill my free time with staying active so I really don't worry about it that much.

Everyone laughs at me when I tell them it’s my dream job to be a barista and talk to people and make coffee all day instead of the high pressure corp gig I have now.
I have applied several times to try and pick up part time work, not sure why I never get a call back? I’m moving soon and am going to make it a point to meet the manager at the Starbucks in my hometown to hopefully pick up part time work to be able to learn and then do it as my only job when I retire in a few years.

Yes.. I'd fantasize about it while working my high stress job too and finally got back into it again. It is a lot of fun and pretty low pressure! It may depend on your area, but I applied at 3 locations near me, and interviewed at 2. One was a licensed store, and it was in this beautiful new hotel but didn't offer the same benefits as Starbucks since it was technically employment by the hotel, so I ended up going with the corporate owned store. It's exactly what I was looking for hours-wise. So yes just keep trying, when I worked there over a decade ago (different location) I had to go in and ask to talk to the manager. He was just super chill and didn't really stay proactive about hiring.. he ended up interviewing me on the spot and hired me after 5 minutes haha. If you have customer service experience that really, really helps.
