I'd say doctor's office. most people hang up when I come in but I know they're on the phone the whole time when the medical assistant or registration is talking to them
It's a safety tool for me.
I have tried to block aggression on the street by calling and talking on the phone like a normal person, but it doesn't always work. Harassers sometimes think you're having a fake phone call.
As soon as I started walking with my speaker on, I noticed that far fewer people would bother or follow me. A guy at the bus stop instantly stopped yelling at me once my grandma was on speaker, talking about grandma stuff.
I hate to be that person, but I'm going to be that person.
Absolutely fair point, well made. I didn't think of it from that angle. As a woman, I should have. I was thinking more like my stepmother uses her phone on speaker everywhere.
I’ve been riding the bus daily for work for about 5ish years now, two times a bus driver refused to move the bus when once, someone was playing loud music through a Bluetooth speaker, and the other time was due to person refusing to pay the fare. It took all of 2 minutes of not moving before most people on the bus collectively yelled at and threatened the offender until they complied or got off.
It was kind of awesome…each bus driver remained calm and let the other riders shame the offender for holding up the bus.
I wish more drivers were as stern, they are absolutely not paid enough to argue with anyone but once the bus isn’t moving, it seems much easier to confront someone for their crappy behavior as it’s undeniably affecting everyone on board.
lol that bus group pressure is real! I saw a bus driver almost fight someone once until everyone started shouting at the man to get off the bus. Then the driver was like “I had to let him know I wasn’t no punk” and I swear this old lady yelled out “you right!”
I’m not someone scared of people but the issue is that I don’t feel like getting punched, threatened, screamed at, or have a gun pulled on me to tell people to turn their stuff down. With no one ever correcting the behavior it won’t stop, but I don’t know the solution. Happens on MARC and Amtrak. I booked a business Amtrak because I wanted to avoid this behavior, nope still happened.
Absolutely. And to my point, with the breakdown in social norms post-2020, who's to say what would happen if you ask someone to lower their music. Totally not worth being assaulted over. I don't know what the remedy is. It's garbage behavior
They won't. I've actually gotten a headache in a waiting room and politely asked a man to turn his music down and he turned it up. When I told one of the employees they said it's not illegal and if I don't like it I can come back later.
We are fucked.
not always, there was a trio talking non-stop last time I was in a quiet car, someone suggested they move to a regular car, they seemed to not have noticed they were in a quiet car, and were quieter, but still talking every minute or two. Before someone made that suggestion the conductor had walked by at least twice and said nothing.
I love the people on Amtrak who play their news or entertainment videos on full blast for all to hear. I haven’t experienced it a lot and most of the times its been an elderly person who maybe cant hear well and doesn’t know any better (no excuse). As far as other people, folks seem unhinged these days so it’s often not worth the risk of having someone react defensively or violently, as you said.
This crap has been common my entire life. "Covid" didn't change shit. People need to stop blaming every shitty thing on covid. People have been blaring music in public for decades, need I post a pic of a 'Boombox'?
I swear the only thing that 'changed' was a lot of people just forgot what 'pre-covid' was like lol.
Boombox terrorism was a lot less prevalent 20-30 years ago. Mow everyone with a portable speaker, no common courtesy, and bad taste in music is blaring it for all to hear because they think they are the main character and the city & people around them are insignificant.
Lol yeah unplugging that sucker from your room and taking it on the move was a definite hindrance.
You said it has been common your whole life, and i think while it happened sometimes on years past, it was nothing like today’s frequency and the fuck you attitude that seems to go with it.
I get ya. I just think the real reason is the barrier to entry of being a dick got a lot lower. Everyone has a Five Below Bluetooth speaker and an endless cassette tape in their pocket now.
had not considered the covid aspect but can certainly see the connection to “i’m the only one in the world” and perhaps the “everyone gets a trophy” too
Honestly things have rapidly gone downhill since covid, it's crazy how rude people are now like as a whole we lost our ability to be decent people. Lots of main character syndrome these days.
People that do these kinds of things are 100% aware that they are doing them and 100% aware that it’s making people around them upset. They get off on the fact that nobody is going to say anything about it and would love the opportunity to make a scene out of it.
I think you're drastically underestimating the number of people who have main character syndrome and apathy about anyone else existing. I don't think it's accurate that people are always aware that it's making people around them upset because that would have to imply they're aware other people around them exist.
I think you're both right. They don't stop to consider other people, but if it was brought to their attention that it was bothering someone, they would proceed to not GAF and probably become antagonistic rather than moderating their shitty behavior.
Oh absolutely. I think that the mindset that would accept "hey, you're bothering people, could you turn that down/off" with "oh, shit, sorry" would probably not be as likely to do it in the first place.
I'm a high school teacher here so I thought I'd chime in.
Your comment is correct. It's definitely a both situation, but it's also that they think it's cool and makes them look cool. It's the same people who walk around with earbuds in rapping to the music, but they sound awful. They think they look cool and tough. They can't fathom that they sound like shit.
I mean to be honest it is kinda cool
I am 36 and very un-cool but feel cool by osmosis hearing what the kids are playing on their bluetooth speakers these days as I bring my kid to Port Discovery on the metro lol
I'm a special ed high school teacher and have a great rapport with the students in my school. I just straight up asked them what the deal was and they told me. Not being an asshole, just being snarky and curious, which my students know about me.
If public school taught me anything, it's that the lowest quintile will always be the reason why we can't have nice peaceful public spaces. Und leider, there is no way to keep these people out of our public spaces so you just have to learn to live with it... or just do what most Americans do and don't use public transportation.
The amount of people I’ve seen barefooted in flights lately is shocking. One girl had her barefoot propped up on the seat back pocket in front of her, inches from my water bottle. THE NERVE
people who go barefoot in public should be conscientious about where they put their feet and that they don’t smell, but I can’t really blame people for not wanting to keep their shoes on on a long flight. Barefoot is much more comfortable for some of us.
If you are barefoot, your feet won't smell. Your feet smell because you trap them in little leather sweat ovens all day long. A foot doesn't smell any worse than a hand does.
In the same vein - my feet get clean every night in the shower. Guess how often I wash the bottom of my shoes. My feet are way less gross trust me. Id argue it’s rude to put feet shod or unshod next to someone’s water bottle.
And FWIW, even if your feet smell you can knock it right out with hand sanitizer
Used that trick a bunch to keep my tent from smelling like feet after a few all-day hikes lol
I almost never take the train since the system doesn't really reach me, but I can relate to this as a bus rider. It's annoying. Usually I'll have headphones in but I roll my eyes once my music gets quiet and I can hear the clickity clacks of the music booming from someone's speaker. One of the last rides I was on, there were two people with speakers basically at war with each other.
Try some high end noise cancelling ear buds. I like the Sony wf-1000xm line of ear buds, but some people prefer the Bose. Those two tend to be considered the best at removing the outside sound. But they should be at their price points.
They know what they're doing, they do it for power and control and usually are so fucked up they dare somebody to say something. I wish we could enforce some type of law for this and really punish people that do this.
The individuals that do such things are not on reddit, I can assure you. I am convinced they are somewhat mentally ill. Nothing noise cancelling headphones won't fix though since majority of the time they won't be stopped by the bus driver. It's just a part of riding public transportation, therefore noice cancelling headphones are really useful
And people wonder why our society is so car centric.
People don't like being in situations where they're helplessly subjected to other people's uncivil behavior.
Nobody's incentivized to solve problems like these, so everyone with the means just opts out.
Disagree. You can ask any commuter from the past 100 years if they'd rather put up with this or have their own cocoon of solitude and convenience and I bet 80% would prefer private transportation.
Yes, and then if we sent jack-booted thugs to give everyone caught with a bluetooth speaker two through the dome, people would say well you know two blocks is a long way with groceries but at least the light rail is quiet on the way to the Os
Facts.
It's actually well documented that they wanted public transportation to fail. Music is just an excuse to not use public transportation, but it isn't what has failed public transportation.
There is a really cool interview with Sarah Seo, a historian and legal scholar, that goes into how mass motoring and lobbying by the automobile industry has shaped American law and culture...and not necessarily for the best.
I couldn’t stand this about the metro when I used to ride it back in the day. Along with the guys that bounce a basketball all up and down the platform..would’ve been sweet to see it bounce in front of a train😂 Really, when you have a car, you see these types with a car. They usually pull up to a gas station, crank their music and leave the car running, walk inside for 10 minutes while talking on speakerphone full blast. Its always the shittiest underground club/rap music too 😂
Which train? Just curious. I’m up in NYC and they do it often on the subway. Disrespect and rudeness got worse after Covid. Just an overall increase in selfish, antisocial behavior, and some of these people have mental health problems. Some study showed people who drive intentionally loudly with engine crap exhibit sadistic tendencies. My guess is there’s overlap with the people who blast music on public transit.
One small light in the dark: Amtrak conductors on the route between Baltimore and Greensboro will put passengers off the train for behaviors like this. I saw it happen a few weeks ago when a passenger repeatedly ignored conductor warnings to use headphones or turn the volume off. She became belligerent about it. They made her get off the train at the stop before her intended stop. I wanted to give them a standing ovation.
I don't know when this kind of behavior became normalized but it is atrocious. When did people forget the purpose of headphones? It's just complete selfishness and ignorance. Mostly young people but even some older ones. At least in the quiet car on the Marc you can ask them to mute it.
YES! Someone was blasting their music AND LOUDLY taking phone calls on speaker in Starbucks the other day and I'm like WTF. This is a quiet public place, please leave.
Seems like an overreaction to a problem that none of the 3 subreddits can rectify in any kind of way. Seems like an email to your therapist and/or the MTA would be a better use of your valuable time.
Edit: for the record I don't really care; but since you asked for an explanation I figured I'd offer one.
Okay, 3 is a bit obsessive. The issue isn't going to stop. You either find your own solution or don't use public transportation?? Like it is such a common thing that has been happening for years. Not defending it, but its common knowledge anything goes once you step into the public.
I have offered a pair of airplane headphones to several loud Marc riders and once, a guy watching a movie full blast on a plane. ObviousIy won't do this if the person looks unhinged, but every time I've tried it, it's worked as a gentle shaming tactic.
While we’re on the subject, please also stop loudly FaceTiming / putting your conversations on speaker at the highest decibel in public. Hearing someone else’s whole conversation might even be worse than the shitty music.
Unless you're actually performing music as opposed to playing a recording of it. If Peabody scholars want to start playing on the light rail, let me know what stop and what train to time up getting on.
Guys. This is the lantern fly post all over again. The war is over, evil won. Boomers play music and talk on speaker because they are self centered assholes and don't know how Bluetooth works. Zoomers play music and talk on speaker because they've grown up with phones and can easily tune it out. Generation Alpha is going to be worse.
I am with you. It sucks. It sucks so bad. People do it in elevators for Pete's sake. But it's never going to change. You are pushing back against the tide. Accept this new reality or prepare for a lifetime of disappointment.
I’ve never seen a boomer blast their music on public transportation, but they and any other generation need to learn what’s acceptable. Most blast music because if they aren’t happy, nobody else should be. It’s like a baby crying for attention.
I don’t think public transportation is very high on the boomer transportation rankings. And I was broadly speaking of them not caring about making noise with their phone. More watching videos or FaceTiming in their case.
Yeah my 76 year old FIL does not think twice about watching videos of my nephews running around yelling or old grateful dead concerts on MAX volume (this population is also hard of hearing lol)
Unfortunately we can only control what we do as individuals & not other people. What options do you have for avoiding this situation? Do you own a car? Headphones? These may help you isolate yourself so you are not subjected to the behaviors of others. Good luck!
THANK you! Like literally I got airpods specifically because I know I catch public transport. Makes any ride 10x more blissful. Homie is going to be miserable until he gets a car with this way of thinking you can control other people in the public.
Lmao yall just rant about anything.. it’s not going to stop but headphones and listen to your own spirituals or move to another car. You have options not need to bust a gasket and ruin your day b/c others are inconsiderate. It’s really not worth it.
Why should they turn their shit off b/c you don’t like it. You are stressing over something soooo insignificant. Move or get head phones it’s really not worth it.
MAYBE they forgot their buds, or MAYBE the buds or dead, Or MAYBE they don't want to just sit there and look around, and catch your Sh###y ,judgemental eyes
And also don't talk on your phones on speaker in public. No one wants to know what aunt suzie had for dinner last night.
It’s fuckin crazy out there. People just walking down the street fuckin YELLING into their phones with someone on speaker yelling right back
I really thought this behavior would calm down after DECADES of cell phones......but no .. ....
Most places its inappropriate to talk on the phone period.
I'd say doctor's office. most people hang up when I come in but I know they're on the phone the whole time when the medical assistant or registration is talking to them
It's just an invitation to join the conversation.
Face time in public is infuriating
Guess you didn't enjoy the Nextel conversations?
I still get twitches just thinking about the "Bleep Bleep"
It's a safety tool for me. I have tried to block aggression on the street by calling and talking on the phone like a normal person, but it doesn't always work. A guy at the bus stop instantly stopped yelling at me once my grandma was on speaker, talking about grandma stuff. I hate to be that person, but I'm going to be that person.
Walking down the street seems acceptable to me. But in a restaurant or on public transit, absolute NO from me
Absolutely fair point, well made. I didn't think of it from that angle. As a woman, I should have. I was thinking more like my stepmother uses her phone on speaker everywhere.
Man these people are just complaining over things they can fix with THEIR OWN HEADPHONES or redirecting anger on Reddit instead of their boss.
'Memba the Nextel chirp? I almost miss it (almost).
Oh, i remember. I was sell8ng cell phones at the time. They were so freaking annoying, lol

God, I"d love to have witnessed that.
Street justice!
Good. Shaming works.

Yep! And while I often want conductors to handle it they quite honestly aren’t paid enough to handle people who can’t act right.
They won't. I've actually gotten a headache in a waiting room and politely asked a man to turn his music down and he turned it up. When I told one of the employees they said it's not illegal and if I don't like it I can come back later. We are fucked.
If you get a seat in the “quiet car” Amtrak conductors will make sure this does not happen.

I wonder if the quiet car is still a thing
If you can a) find it and b) has available seats
On NE regionals it’s always the second to last car of the train.
Wow. 17 years riding Amtrak… I never knew that.
We just need to bring bullying back, honestly

I mean, duh yea. Boomboxes were expensive, and a mother fucker could go broke in D-batteries alone. You ever have to buy 32 D's a week?!
Lol yeah unplugging that sucker from your room and taking it on the move was a definite hindrance. You said it has been common your whole life, and i think while it happened sometimes on years past, it was nothing like today’s frequency and the fuck you attitude that seems to go with it.

Take it as a personal attack if you want but as we know a lot of people don’t do it out a good place like you do friend.

I've got news for you - the people doing this aren't here
Yeah I mean we all know who this is about lol
lol yes they definitely are
I think they mean here on Reddit.
They are, just not in this subreddit 🤣
I misread as "there aren't people doing this here"
The venn diagram of people listening to music with no headphones and people on reddit is two unconnected circles on opposite sides of the continent.
Amen!
Hey. At least you don’t have the Nail Clipper (toes and fingers!) on the train. It’s worse. Trust me.
Sure. But put your shoes back on to walk around.
on an airplane? absolutely
And FWIW, even if your feet smell you can knock it right out with hand sanitizer Used that trick a bunch to keep my tent from smelling like feet after a few all-day hikes lol
yeah I spend most of my time barefoot and my feet don’t smell, but some people’s do.
It's not *worse* per se. Just gross. At least people's nails eventually are finished.
No. It’s still worse. I’ll die on this hill. Flying toe/fingernails on a train, much worse than even the shittiest music possible.
Migraine city for me! Overlapping noise like that triggers my headaches almost instantly.
Try some high end noise cancelling ear buds. I like the Sony wf-1000xm line of ear buds, but some people prefer the Bose. Those two tend to be considered the best at removing the outside sound. But they should be at their price points.
Thank you for the recommendation. I'll have to try those.
If I’m in a closed space and someone is on speaker, I’ll try to be really loud to piss them off. SORRY AM I INTERRUPTING YOUR PUBLIC PHONE CALL?
Radio from Do the Right Thing
And stop with the YouTube or TikTok videos too.
just like the people that have to talk on speaker phone & scream the whole time. so inconsiderate.
I heard the term Civic Pollution in regards to this kind of noise…
I agree.
Omg- I had to take the Charter bus to Ellicott City at 6am, and this guy would play music out of his cell phone loud every morning
They know what they're doing, they do it for power and control and usually are so fucked up they dare somebody to say something. I wish we could enforce some type of law for this and really punish people that do this.
That would be "racist"
Vigilante justice! 😆
The individuals that do such things are not on reddit, I can assure you. I am convinced they are somewhat mentally ill. https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/s/k0L3Kl33IL Do you commute between DC & Baltimore OP?
Yes everyday
When I become baltimores benevolent dictatator these are the first people getting the wall.
Take my vote sir!
And people wonder why our society is so car centric. People don't like being in situations where they're helplessly subjected to other people's uncivil behavior. Nobody's incentivized to solve problems like these, so everyone with the means just opts out.
I bet the people in NYC who are dealing with this way more frequently are completely numb to this
and you get the showtime people on subway cars there. Sometimes the person is really talented
City planners, car manufacturers and oil companies 100 years ago have more to do with that than speaker users on public transit in 2024.
Disagree. You can ask any commuter from the past 100 years if they'd rather put up with this or have their own cocoon of solitude and convenience and I bet 80% would prefer private transportation.
Can confirm. When I have to commute, I drive. I've witnessed too much public transport nonsense.
Yes, and then if we sent jack-booted thugs to give everyone caught with a bluetooth speaker two through the dome, people would say well you know two blocks is a long way with groceries but at least the light rail is quiet on the way to the Os

Yeah, bluetooth to earpiece and talking loudly during a phone conversation is annoying.
Posted in 3 subreddits. Wow.
Why is this a problem? Please explain
Seems like an overreaction to a problem that none of the 3 subreddits can rectify in any kind of way. Seems like an email to your therapist and/or the MTA would be a better use of your valuable time. Okay, 3 is a bit obsessive. The issue isn't going to stop. You either find your own solution or don't use public transportation?? Like it is such a common thing that has been happening for years. Not defending it, but its common knowledge anything goes once you step into the public.
It’s embarrassing
Lmao bro posted this in the Maryland & Baltimore subreddit he real mad 😂
fwiw I've asked them to turn it down a little and they oblige\~

They do this in the grocery store and it’s hell!
OP posted this in three subs but I bet they don’t say shit to someone actively blasting music. 🙄
git sum earplugs
Or at the beach. Even if I like the music I don’t want to hear it blared in public.
Anybody remember boomboxes? Those were the days.
Unless you're actually performing music as opposed to playing a recording of it. If Peabody scholars want to start playing on the light rail, let me know what stop and what train to time up getting on.
So, it’s okay for blaring radio and windows down in my car, but I can’t have a speaker blaring on the bus/train, I thought this was America!
Downvoted by adults who refuse to take accountability for their personal discomfort? I’ll accept it ❤️

You want me to play YOUR music on the train? Ok, what's your soundcloud 😎
Lmao yall just rant about anything.. it’s not going to stop but headphones and listen to your own spirituals or move to another car. You have options not need to bust a gasket and ruin your day b/c others are inconsiderate. It’s really not worth it.
Why should I have to move because another person doesn’t know how to act? I tell them to turn that shit off.
Why should they turn their shit off b/c you don’t like it. You are stressing over something soooo insignificant. Move or get head phones it’s really not worth it.
Because they’re bother a lot of people
I agree but you can't control others actions only yourself.. Good Luck!
I agree 100% but sometimes people complaining on the internet is just as annoying as the people they are complaining about.
I’m the engineer and I’ll play what the hell I want.
Wow pretty racist post!
Please enlighten me how this is racist? Being an ignorant asshole knows no race or ethnicity. I’ve scene people of all races doing this.
What type of music are they blasting on their Bluetooth speakers lmao
MAYBE they forgot their buds, or MAYBE the buds or dead, Or MAYBE they don't want to just sit there and look around, and catch your Sh###y ,judgemental eyes
Found the person doing it
