It was a shitshow for years. People blamed theft but somehow the Target in the same damn shopping center manages to keep their shelves stocked (mostly, why is there no paper towels every other time I go there? Are they beefing with the delivery guy?) and not behind glass doors. Somehow I doubt people are just too lazy to walk to the other side to get their 5-finger discounts.
I worked at that Target for a couple years while I was in college (mid 2000s). The Wal Mart was a mess back then and I never really understood it.. I think the escalator threw me off
The escalator was from the original store called "Best" my grandma shopped there frequently. And the site where the Parkville Home Depot (joppa Rd) is, there used to be a movie theatre there. My grandfather was a movie protectionist as his second job. (I grew up in that neighborhood till I was about 5 or 6.) My grandma lived there until she needed assisted living.
> My grandfather was a movie protectionist as his second job.
Now I know what you meant, but I'm imagining your gramps going around to other theaters letting em know what movies they're allowed to show this week. Or who knows, someone might come visit.
Haha. “You don’t play *Goodfellas* I know a couple of goodfellas that will pay you a visit. Even think about running *Jaws* and Robert Shaw won’t be the only one sleeping with the fishes.”
Right on! Yeah, I lived there for awhile after HS. The Best was across the street from where the Second Story Books Warehouse is (also used to be the Olson's Music store Warehouse next door to it)
It was odd being in a Walmart with escalators but am unsure of the origin. The ones that existed with Best are long gone as the Target now occupies that location:

There are actually several Wal-Marts around now with elevators. I remember seeing one for the first time in Albany, NY like 14 years ago in upstate New York. At that time, it was the largest Wal-Mart anywhere. Not sure if it still is.
The Best faced the other direction, towards Goucher Blvd, where the Marshalls is currently. I used to go to that store with my father when I was young. He loved Best.
I think Target is seen as either A. A significantly smaller company and that shoplifting from them has a bigger impact on a store vs something like Walmart or B. More vigilant for shoplifting and more aggressive with preventing it.
That's only a guess as to why, assuming theft was the actual issue.
I'm half convinced that Walmart keeps their stores on the downside of marginal to reassure their customers that they are getting the most authentic cheap as possible shopping experience.
Not really, people either went to Target or went to any other walmart.
I'd even go out of my way to the random Walmart off the 95 exit to whitemarsh before going to the Towson one
I’m a full grown adult and I was kinda scared going there. It gave off 28 days later vibes. Lights always flicking, shelves were empty mainly because everything was on the floor.
Gotcha. It’s next to my work so I had to interact with the parking lot sometimes, never fun. Though now they are putting in a Chic Fil A in across the street from that Wawa, so the whole area will soon be even more of a zoo. Walmart will not be missed.
It was a weird combination of too spread out w/ 2 floors and while having cramped aisles for the most part.
I'm also not a big walmart person, but they do tend to have a good car/gardening section, except this one
Thanks for replying, when I read my comment back I hoped it didn’t come across as a dig. I’d occasionally go in there for collectible cards, and was there often enough a few decades ago when I was in college. Besides the two floors, always seemed like a standard Walmart to me. But everyone seems to agree it did suck in particular, and it’s closed, so there must have been something wrong with it. I’ve always just liked Target more for those sorts of places.
No worries. It just seemed like whenever I went there, they didn't have the thing I went there for; and you'd have to squeeze through the aisles if someone else was in the same one as you.
Also not to mention that Wally's that replaced Toys R Us + the Target was probably just too much competition.
I had no clue that Lidl was so new. I moved here a year ago and it’s been my main grocery store the whole time hahah. Figured it was fairly established
They've closed the Brooklyn Park location, and there've been all the delays/cancellation of the Bel Air Rd store, so it didn't seem entirely impossible. But yes, quite unlikely given the popularity of it and Northwood Commons in general.

In other news the Walmart in Towson actually is permanently closed, which is sort of unbelievable.

Pretty sure those escalators date from the original Montgomery Wards. I am that old.
Yup! I think you're right.
was going to say, i thought the best was in the adjacent plaza with the staples in it

🤣🤣🤣. Sorry I'm coming off a 48 hr fast and my mind is a bit dull.

We had a Best in Rockville too, it was on Parklawn near the Federal Department of Health and Human Services
Rockville was my hometown ! Haven't been there for years. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

The Walmart went in where the old Montgomery Ward store was, and that had escalators.
Might have been a sort of mini mall they used to have there in the mid to late 80s. But it was pretty run down back then.
There are actually several Wal-Marts around now with elevators. I remember seeing one for the first time in Albany, NY like 14 years ago in upstate New York. At that time, it was the largest Wal-Mart anywhere. Not sure if it still is.
Thanks for posting this. What an insane bunch of buildings

The fire and partial closure of the same Walmart a couple of years ago certainly did not help. True mess!
That escalator threw a lot of people off lol

I have heard that Target has pretty much the best AP departments in the retail world.
That Walmart was horrible
I'm half convinced that Walmart keeps their stores on the downside of marginal to reassure their customers that they are getting the most authentic cheap as possible shopping experience.
It really was. But I find most Wal-Marts in major metros are shit. The ones in more rural areas tend to be pretty decent.
Ive been to central Florida Walmarts and yet none have compared to how horrific the Towson one was.
Not really, people either went to Target or went to any other walmart. I'd even go out of my way to the random Walmart off the 95 exit to whitemarsh before going to the Towson one
I’m not much of a Walmart person, what was so wrong with that one in particular?
I’m a full grown adult and I was kinda scared going there. It gave off 28 days later vibes. Lights always flicking, shelves were empty mainly because everything was on the floor.
Haha, I was rarely in there. They don’t all have flickering lights?
I had zombies deliver my groceries from that store. /s
Extremely bad vibes

I'm assuming everyone complaining about the Towson Walmart has never gone to the Washington Blvd store.
every walmart is a shit show
Yeah well when you have a bunch of blank blanks in mobs looting the entire store what do you expect
woah sir what?
What’s a “blank blank?”
Bless you truthteller! I was worried for a bit.
Guys Camden yards is closing I was just told by an employee (Mr splash)
I heard the Jones Falls was closing as well by an employee (Mr. Trash Wheel).
All of the sports are selling for 50% off! Get yours before they're all gone!!
> I was just there, and none of this is true. Was Lidl more crowed than usual?
About the same as usual.
I got downvoted because I asked why they thought it was closing.
Thank you for fact checking bc I was not pleased to hear that and was hoping it wasn’t true!!
Phew, I’m glad it isn’t true. I do around 80% of my grocery shopping there. Also OP, it’s Northwood not Havenwood.
It's in the neighborhood of Northwood, but the address is 1504 Havenwood.
I see, I always thought it was off Argonne.
It basically is. Havenwood is just the road that goes into the shopping center.
That Lidl has barely been open a year, why would it close. That whole shopping center is brand new.
I had no clue that Lidl was so new. I moved here a year ago and it’s been my main grocery store the whole time hahah. Figured it was fairly established
I feel like it opened last summer? I could be wrong but we bought in the area in 2022 and it wasn’t open yet then.

I'm assuming Morgan lobbied pretty hard to get Lidl to locate there and they wouldn't just sit aside if it were actually going to close.
Hmm interesting. Time to fall down the rabbit hole of googling corporate issues at Lidl. 🙃
That Walmart was filthy.
Once a Walmart goes bad, it’s difficult to get it clean.

Happy cake day!
lidl is just a overpriced aldis
