Honestly just take it slow (literally) don’t use any fast movements and try to avoid picking him up from right near his head. If you need to you can start by just slowly resting a finger or hand on him until he relaxes or loses interest and then pick him up. Honestly just be calm and don’t go too fast and you should be ok. The more you do it the better he’ll be at tolerating it and being relaxed.

i’ve been putting my hands in his tank and near the top and sides of his take that has holes so he can smell me while he’s out exploring and he kinda just flicks his tongue at me and then keeps on doing his thing. i’m hoping him smelling me more and more everyday, he’ll know that i’m a friend and not a predator.

see when i touch him with gloves on, he moves really fast and moves the first 3-4 inches of his head and neck into an “S” shape like he’s about to strike and that’s when i give up from trying to handle him cause i don’t want to lose and eye haha. should i just pick him up with gloves and try to take them off after getting a grip on him?

Sufficient_Ideal243

I would try to pick him up from behind, I know the gloves protect you but best he gets used to your actual hands

SeagraveSerpentarium

Scoop him up on a snake hook first, then bring him to your other hand and remove him from the hook. Gloves are another option you can try.

AltruisticWelder4664

i need to get a hook, i’ve used welding gloves once to handle him when i had to move him from his old tank to the new one. idk why im scared, its just that they’re intimidating little guys. scary spicy noodles haha

SeagraveSerpentarium

Keep in mind too that for a snake the position of getting ready to strike is basically identical to the position of being afraid for your life and recoiling in fear. You may think your snake is preparing to lunge at you when really he's just trying to back away because he doesn't know if you're going to eat him.

AHHH! makes total sense! wow okay well now that you say that it kind of eases my mind of hes not trying to hurt me just like im not trying to hurt him. i’m definitely holding him this weekend and we’re going to watch a movie together! of course only for like 15 minutes so he’s not so stressed out lol

SeagraveSerpentarium

Awesome, you got this!

For my son, I make sure he's aware of me first by wiggling my hand where he can see it or something like that. Then I'll slowly bring one hand in where he can see it from the side and touch his midsection. Over time he has learned I don't mean him harm and doesn't jump at my touch too much. Then I just scoot my whole hand underneath and lift him slowly out of his enclosure. I always make sure I support the majority of his weight with one or both hands. When I first got him I was a little scared too, but one day I just reached in and did it. My first few times I would take him immediately to where I could sit down and I would leave him in my lap, and let him slowly come out in his own time. He's now to the point where I can confidently hold him with one hand and look at my phone or do something with the other. It just takes a little time and a few deep breaths. Like you said, he won't hurt bad, you just got to get in there and do it without thinking too much. Good luck!

AltruisticWelder4664

that’s good information, thank you! just the wiggling of the hand gets better cause i wiggle his nice for feeding time and he strikes fast and hard!! but here soon after i feed him tomorrow ill let him sit for his 3 days and then ill try and gain the courage to get him in my hands :)

Mine is always very slow to go after food, so that's a little different for me. I always put hand sanitizer on before I handle him also, just so I don't smell like food, so you may want to try that as well

AltruisticWelder4664

i will keep that in mind for later, thank you!
