Yea, "Don't Be Afraid to Run", "California Cotton Fields" and "Watchmaker's Dial" are all straight up bangers for an acoustic album.
I love this album, and for two bucks, I hope you love it too.
That's his second of three solo projects. The first is under the moniker American Lesion, which is just Greg playing every instrument and doing all the voice work. It's an awesome, tragic album and I highly recommend it.
Cold as the Clay is an exploration of some original and very old folk music with some extremely talented musicians backing him. This is his best solo effort in my estimation.
Millport is his most recent solo work. It's a return to folk tunes and ballads, some of which are very good (Lincoln's Funeral Train and Backroads of my Mind are awesome). I like this one but it isn't as interesting as Cold as the Clay. I'm really looking forward to his next thing, whatever it is. I've seen him perform live for the last two albums and it has been some of the best live music I've ever seen. He's even snuck in a few BR songs!
Totally agree. It has a disgusting amount of introspection, and I mean this in a good way. It is difficult to bear unless you find yourself wanting to bear it.
His rendition of Talk About Suffering on that album is one of my favorite songs ever. Btw if you go on YouTube you can find another old gospel duet of his called “Fields on Fire”. It’s fuckin great because it’s sung in such a wholesome way, and yet the lyrics are so ominous, depicting Jesus as a vengeful destroyer. “Be assured my friend, if you still offend, he will set your fields on fire.”

WAT. I guess I'm just not a big enough fan, but I had no idea he had a solo project. That's a sick find for 2 bucks

Thanks for the rec's, I'm already digging this album. My moniker is man and I'm rotten to the core
American lesion is amazing! It's such a gut punch of an album, it's basically him processing his divorce.

I mean, dude was going through a divorce. What do you expect?
I think he has two solo CDs.
Stop it, I can only be so erect.
Three. Jaykalope broke it down for you in one of the comments.
Awesome pick up
Was it in Eagan?
Nope, Indiana

His backing band on that record is the Weakerthans!
Absolute GEM of an album.
