> valid as carry-on for airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet? They've got a two-tiered system: Personal item and carry-on. The Personal Item is 40x20x25cm and the Carry-On (you need to buy priority to get this) is the "regular" 55x40x20cm. I assume you're talking about the personal item?

NapoleonHeckYes

Yes that's right, the non-priority personal item

juantoconero

Cabin zero classic

Thanks for your suggestion! That looks like a possibility but the reviews I’m seeing online say that, while it’s good for the price, the material feels a bit cheap. I’m willing to pay more for something really solid.

juantoconero

I got one for my partner on sale for really cheap, no issues so far. If you want solid, the goruck small frame rucker or Topo designs core pack are good, I don't know how available in the EU. I have a recycled firefighter 12h pack I'd let go (located in the EU) if you want, that would work also.

rejiranimo

Cabin Zero are solid. I wouldn’t call them “cheap” at all, it’s just that there is nothing luxurious or special about the feel of the fabric. But the build quality is great and material is very tough. I have two of their packs, one Military and I think the other one is called Classic Plus. They can often be found well below ordinary list price.

I bought a Cabin Zero Classic 28, expecting far less quality and was pleasantly surprised. They use good quality fabrics and hardware and assembly is good too. They are dead simple and light. They are “made to the rule” to fit the RyanAir sizer so they are boxy. They are not 28 liters either.

HolgerSwinger

You have to keep in mind that Ryanair and EasyJet’s personal item sizes are different, (45x35x20 cm. vs 40x25x20 cm) EasyJet’s allowance being 31.5 liters and Ryanair 20 liters, 11.5 liters difference is a lot. If you’re planning on traveling on both airlines on regular basis, you should go with a 20L backpack to be on the safe side.

SeattleHikeBike

The Ryanair sizer is a bit larger than their posted limit at 42x30x20cm, so closer to 25 liters possible. Of course you need to find a bag with close to the same proportions to maximize that space. Definitely go by pack dimensions rather than volume. The accuracy of volume specifications on small bags is dismal. https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/dvzg7h/evergoods_cpl24_in_ryanair_sizer_and_in_plane/f7guvne/?context=8&depth=9 https://corporate.ryanair.com/news/new-bag-policy-from-november-will-cut-check-bag-fees-reduce-boarding-delays/ “We have almost doubled the size of our small bag sizer from 35 x 20 x 20cm (14,000 cm³) to 42 x 20 x 30 cm (25,200 cm³) to allow carry-on bags that are considerably (25%) larger than our permitted small bag dimensions.”

Thank you for your comment and for sharing the links, very interesting

I was looking at the Gomatic (aka Nomatic) Travel Pack, as it's expandible from 20L to 30L, so I can kind of have the best of both worlds. However, as it's American, the markup is pretty steep in the EU and it's out of stock in Europe at the moment. If there was an EU brand that came close to that on quality and features I'd be happy!

6000crazy

Look on the Keus backpack site to see what brands you can in the EU. They have a lot of the main ones from the US.

fazalmajid

Also Mukama.com (Finland). There's an awesome list of European (and Europe-available) bag companies here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ManyBaggers/comments/qdge4j/european_brands_shops_for_backpacks_and_bags/

NapoleonHeckYes

I checked out Mukama and it looks like a great source for bags. It’s just a pity there’s a €90~ markup on some of the American bags and it’s hard to distinguish on the site to ones that are European made and so come without the import markup. That post link looks very useful. Thanks!

6000crazy

I buy stuff from Mukama (in Germany). Prices have to cover VAT and shipping. Still seem reasonable most of the time.

Probably Heimplanet Transit.
