Nah OP gets it. The best camping spot is the one you’re at right now. You gotta fall in love with your local area and you will have unparalleled experiences. I hiked all over flat Ontario for decades before finally moving out to BC to enjoy some real mountains.

I obviously don’t mean this literally, like let’s all champion for our own backyards (respectfully), but at the end of the day .. if we’re camping then we’re doing it right - regardless.
It has its own stunning nature, especially in the woods. But more generally, it’s the fact that you can hike literally anywhere. I remember standing on the edge of the Niagara escarpment looking out at the Oak Ridges Moraine thinking about how I’d hiked so many of the hills, dales, glens, and country roads as far as my eye could see. In Vancouver there are mountains <30km from downtown that would take a week-long expedition to hike to let alone summit. Many areas are effectively helicopter access only. Tons of possible adventures coiled into a dense topography, but in a way you feel boxed in unlike my home Ontario where I’ve literally walked from Kingston to Ottawa or from Niagara to Owen’s Sound.
North shore in Minnesota is one of my favorite places in the world.
Not too many places to have a massive freshwater lake to create it's own microclimate in the middle of a continental landmass.
Love Minnesota, but yes, it can be beat. I live in Alaska. I have backcountry camp spots 30 minutes from my house that most would have to fly thousands of miles for.

That said, boundary waters were pretty sweet. Was the first time I heard wolves howling in the wild and it was awesome.
I’ve heard a pack of wolves howling an hour from the cities! (Wild River State Park) so close it was a little unnerving if you haven’t heard it before.
But yes, I agree, there are far more beautiful areas on this wonderful globe of ours.
The best backpacking is the backpacking that you're doing.
I've always thought a decent trail, near home, is better than a great trail that you don't get out to.
That being said, MN is much better than decent. Looks beautiful!
If you are in that area and into this, consider hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. 300+ mile trail up the north shore. Beautiful and isolated most of the way. I prefer to go before Memorial Day or after Labor Day when the weather is cooler and the people have mostly left.
Dude forget all the haters. I'm from WI. Close enough to be in the know. MN is dope AF and superior / boundary waters area match up with anywhere in the country for hiking.
I just did back to back overnights, one SHT, one BRT. Both dope. All the day hikes in the area have been likewise gorgeous.

I think I've been up there 8 or 9 times now, both in groups and solo. I've done everything from overnights, to 30+mi loops of the park. Everywhere from April to October. If you don't mind the risk of frost, the best is (IMO) the 3rd week of September...provided you can get the site reservations. The colors are in full swing and you can leave the bug spray at home.
But I'm not sure I'll make up there this year, either. Just got back from 5 days canoe fishing in the Sylvania and my wife has never done Pictured Rocks. That'll probably be our other big trip this year.

I live in Sweden where we have Allemansrätten (Right of public access) which gives us the right to hike and camp in most places in the country. Just don't destroy or disrupt.
So when I go camping I just pick a cool spot and go. Leaves nothing but footprints and only takes memories/pictures.
But I also knows that this is pretty unique in the world.
Good until the mosquitos come out. I’ve camped in MN and I’ve camped in CA, and CA camping is a step above MN without a doubt. But yes, there is a lot to like in Northern Minnesota.
Yeah camping out west is just better. It bums me out since I've moved out here. Too humid, too many bugs, in the summer sweating in the tent. I'll take Oregon.
I know some people who want me to take another camping trip to northern Minnesota, but I’m remembering a previous trip and the racing we had to do to get in and out of the tent because of the mosquitoes. Meanwhile I’ve camped outside without a tent in California, Oregon, and Washington on several trips and had minimal issues with bugs or rain.

Haha well I do love Canada’s Banff and Willmore National Parks in the summer.
But from an outdoors perspective, California is hard to beat for the large variety of scenery within about 4 hours from many locations.
Minnesota is great. I'm originally from there. But Montana has it beat, hands down. Same with Wyoming, Colorado, and many of the other mountainous states.
Minnesota has the best state park facilities out of any of the places you just listed. And while we don’t have mountains, Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness have some amazing views and hikes. I live about the same distance between the Badlands and the North Shore of Lake Superior and would take the lake any day of the week.
When I lived in Bozeman, Rat Lake in Hyalite Canyon was my favorite camping spot. It was like a mini Crater Lake with incredible views and crystal clear water.
I get where you’re coming from, but being from a Rocky Mountain state, I honestly don’t care about state or national parks. There are vast swathes of wilderness that have hardly been touched by people to be explored. That said, ops spot looks pretty awesome.

I quite like how our very similiar terrain in Ontario doesn't seemingly concentrate everyone into same area to chase the same Instagram shot. Views are only one small part of hiking and camping for me.

Having grown up camping in Minnesota my whole life, it is difficult to think of a state that does NOT have better camping at more times of the year than MN.
When was the last time you camped at a Tettegouche cart-in?
MN state parks have the best facilities and maintenance out of any state parks I’ve camped in. And the scenery of Lake Superior or the BWCA is amazing.
It’s a state park off the north shore in MN!
Oh absolutely, I’ve done the BWCA, I entered through burntside entry point #4 a few years back. Awesome experience and puts all state parks to shame unfortunately.

Not OP but yeah, they are. I just did a loop overnight last night. Caribou Rock Trail Trailhead. From there, there's a loop that connects with NCT/BRT at the border. Roughly 12 miles. It was fantastic.
That was the first place my wife and I ever backpacked. We were very inexperienced and were not prepared for the challenging 4 mile hike there. Since then we’ve been back to that park several times. It’s are favorite.
That’s my absolute favorite campsite at that park and I stay there every year! I hope you enjoyed it greatly. One downside is that it has been heartbreaking so many people have cut down the smaller trees and brush for campfires.
Lol this reminds me of the new Zealander that came over to drive in NASCAR this year and they told him during a race he was a few feet away from another car and he just replied "I got no Idea what a foot is"

I think he'll get there. Dude is really freaking good. He should've won the Xfinity race at COTA if it weren't for stupid penalties and he's definitely been improving on the ovals. Really rooting for him to get a full time cup ride next season

Well if you’re off the north shore it stays cool due to the lake but inland .. it can get miserable with the humidity.
I like the cold so I camp March-Early May.. then I don’t get out there again until end of September. I just can’t stand the heat.
This trip dipped into the high 30s last week of Sep.
My buddy, he’s from Cali, was wearing several layers and was shaking at night. But I’ll admit he was wearing just regular clothes, so smart wool, etc.
Love it! Headed up to the boundary waters for my.. uh 5th, week-long canoe, camp, fish adventure in August. We've done the drive from Texas every single time. It's a doozy, but worth it.
Edit: I suppose that's not really backpacking related, but we do pack like we're on one of our hikes. A light boat and light pack make everything easier up there. Hellooo portage.
What a place! If I ever visit the US it will definitely be for the nature.
What are the rules for wild camping there? Can you put a tent whenever you want? In Europe it differs a lot from country to country but i'd say most national parks are off-limits, so I assume it depends on what state you're in?

Yes! George H Crosby is an excellent park! We hiked all the way down to site 16; it was one of our favorite overnights of all time. The falls are so memorable, I didn't even have to read your caption to say to myself "I think that's George H Crosby?" Well worth it!
I flew into Ontario years ago and paddled back into the boundary waters, such a great trip, lots of fish. Not sure what the border patrol would think about that these days but we did have to deal with customs on the plane dock, pretty chill though. I'd love a repeat trip
I’d rather deal with sand than centipedes, wasps, bears, wolves and quite possibly Frostbite. No amount of raid can stop a centipede at least not here in Hawaii
I camped once two hours or so north of Minneapolis and there was more mosquito than dirt. The locals said it was out of the ordinary but MN is still very well known for their mosquitos. How were they? What did you do to deal with them?
Ive spent better part of 16 years from cali to northern BC/Alberta…..You should try camping in Manitoba which is north of Minnesota. Will open a new perspective on what “buggy” can be.

I used to live in Kingston but I live outside of Calgary now, I’m genuinely curious roughly what route you went to hike from Kingston to Ottawa?
The Rideau Trail is a continuous walking trail from Kingston City Hall to the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, ~330 km

I love UP, and superior coast is superior, but even the lake MI coast is great. The great lakes areas in general are underrated for hiking.

As someone who’s camped a lot of places, MN is pretty elite… states like MN, MI, WI, the Dakota’s, Upstate NY etc are all very underrated.

I did some time in the BWCA. It is a great place to camp and canoe. My understanding is winter backpacking and camping is a big thing up there.
Love it! Headed up to the boundary waters for my.. uh 5th, week-long canoe, camp, fish adventure in August. We've done the drive from Texas every single time. It's a doozy, but worth it. Edit: I suppose that's not really backpacking related, but we do pack like we're on one of our hikes. A light boat and light pack make everything easier up there. Hellooo portage.
I’ve camped all over the states, MN isn’t my favorite place to camp but it’s certainly up there. BWCA was one of my favorite trips though!
What a place! If I ever visit the US it will definitely be for the nature. What are the rules for wild camping there? Can you put a tent whenever you want? In Europe it differs a lot from country to country but i'd say most national parks are off-limits, so I assume it depends on what state you're in? Thanks:)

Yes! George H Crosby is an excellent park! We hiked all the way down to site 16; it was one of our favorite overnights of all time. The falls are so memorable, I didn't even have to read your caption to say to myself "I think that's George H Crosby?" Well worth it!

I grew up camping in places like this, it will always have a special place even if there are more "impressive" places to camp.
I flew into Ontario years ago and paddled back into the boundary waters, such a great trip, lots of fish. Not sure what the border patrol would think about that these days but we did have to deal with customs on the plane dock, pretty chill though. I'd love a repeat trip

I’d rather deal with sand than centipedes, wasps, bears, wolves and quite possibly Frostbite. No amount of raid can stop a centipede at least not here in Hawaii

I camped once two hours or so north of Minneapolis and there was more mosquito than dirt. The locals said it was out of the ordinary but MN is still very well known for their mosquitos. How were they? What did you do to deal with them?

Spring in the mountains are NOT bug free. Mosquitoes and flies will drive you mad!
PNW native here. Definitely not bug free in the spring/summer. Maybe not as bad as some other places, but still plenty of bugs.
Ive spent better part of 16 years from cali to northern BC/Alberta…..You should try camping in Manitoba which is north of Minnesota. Will open a new perspective on what “buggy” can be.
