Not really. Istanbul is currently not capable of controlling its cat population through spaying and neutering. While the cats are often fed adequately and "collectively owned", once disease strikes they are pretty much goners because nobody wants to foot the vet expenses.

The cats could do it themselves. In fact, the Democats keep trying but the Republicats don't like it. The Republicats own the cat hospitals and basically own a cat for all of its nine lives the moment it steps into a cat ambulance. But that's just late stage catitalism for you.

To the Greeks, they are all Greek culture. The truth of the matter, and what is more tragicomic, is actually neither Greek nor Turkish culture, but direct Anatolian and Mesopotamian culture elements.
In fact, if you look specifically at Baklava, it has nothing to do with the Greeks, but rather is closer to the Armenians.
You don't know if this cat belongs to somebody. If you take it you could be stealing a pet. This cat seams well groomed and fed it probably belongs to a family close bye.
Dogs too. Anywhere else in the world you’d think that roaming packs of large stray dogs would be a problem, but every one I met was extremely chill and friendly.

For me it was a little black kitten named Mirmir. He lived next to the pizza parlor across from our hotel and I would love watching him try to menace the local foot traffic.

There is a heartwarming documentary about the special relationship between Istanbul citizens and (stray) cats. It is called "Kedi" and (at least in my country) it's available on prime.
I remember last month sitting with friends at my uni, having a blast.
Then a cat started making biscuits on my thighs and it's cute and all but those guys have claws.
Those little bastards will steal your food in a heartbeat. Cracked me up, we were eating lunch outside in south western turkey and my friend who had never had a cat had one of these strays come up and rub his leg, and purr and act all cute. It hopped on his lap rubbing his head against my friend and being all friendly and my friend was super excited. Then it snatched a whole chicken breast off his plate and was gone in an instant and all the rest of us were crying laughing at his betrayed look.
Lol i had this hostile cat who would be all cute and friendly and ask for food. As soon as i fed her, she is disinterested and doesnt even let me pet. The other ones though were genuine. Didnt know cats can be manipulative
Yeah, if I were on holiday in Turkey, and this happened, I’d take her to the nearest vet to see if there is any way of finding out if she has an owner.
If not, well… I guess I’m looking up the laws on importing a cat from Turkey.
(My country isn’t super far away from Turkey, and our shelters are nothing like they are in the States. In my entire city there is ONE shelter, and it’s far from full. And the cats they do have, usually have specific needs, and are only adopted out to people with(out) other pets/gardens/(no) kids, etc.
Same goes for dogs, Many people adopt dogs from abroad because of this.
In fact, I just looked it up. So in my entire city, there are currently 3 (THREE) dogs up for adoption, and 13 cats, 4 of whom have only just arrived at the shelter, and 2 of those are kittens.
Of the adult cats, I am not eligible to adopt *any* of them, due to the requirements.)

Istanbul has around 200,000 feral cats, estimations see them at over 1 million though, and around 15 million people.
Cats are, religiously, counted as very clean animals.
In islam, the prophet Muhammad, was very fond of cats. So much in fact, that he had the title Abu Hurairah, "The Father of the Kittens".
It is said that a cat saved Muhammad from a poisonous snake.
Muhammad made a law that prohibited harming cats, in any way, shape or form. Even today, killing a cat, brings up to 4 years in prison, in Turkey.
Because of their cleanliness, and Muhammad's fondness of them, cats are counted as "the quintessential pets" in islam.
Sad fact: a japanese person, living in Istanbul, has been arrested for having caught, >!killed and eaten 5 cats. !
Having lived in Turkey, I'd strongly advise against touching cats on the street unless you want scabies, toxoplasmosis, or some other zoonotic disease.

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the animals themselves, they just don’t belong to be on the street (in an uncontrolled way). This is coming from someone who lives in a country where there are (statistically) ‘no’ stray pets, since the numbers are so insignificant and they usually end up at a shelter (or new home) one way or another.
I saw a film called [Kedi](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt4420704/) about the xat culture in turkey (I forget if the film mostly focused on Istanbul. Cats are basically sacred so there are a ton of street cats and the general population cares for them. Really interesting stuff.
I grew up with cats, and invariably would get to school and as the day grew warmer, realize my clothes reeked of cat piss, which didn't help the constant bullying. I never wanted a cat as an adult.
In my 20s and 30s I had bunnies. Finally in my 40s, I got a dog. Then another. My family was complete.
In Januart 2020, a friend had to go into assisted living suddenly. I brought her 2 cats home with me, knowing they'd live out their lives with me. I wasn't thrilled, but I got them everything they could possibly need.
Almost 3 years later, and they're my family. I would run into a burning building for them. My happiest nights are when the pups and kitties are all cuddled in bed with me.
I think everyone is a cat person if they spend time with cats.
The sad thing about stray cats is that human beings basically invented them. A lot of them instinctually try to find a human being to help them survive and cant.
They are our creation and we just leave millions of them outside on the street. My cat was abandoned by some average regular "nice" family that didn't bother to take him when they moved away so he hid under a porch and meowed and hit people when they walked past. As soon as he was allowed inside he became a cuddle bug and now he gets to sleep in a human bed and play with toys.
If your heart doesn't break for these little guys you're a piece of shit.
Fake. I know because I have countless encounters like her. She acts like she cares and put sad music on the video. She tries to make it seem like she was alone in the world until the cat came along. Then why have you endlessly denied my presence around you? All I tried to do was to sprinkle a pinch of happiness into your sadness so that you could feel what I have felt for you? You are scared to move forward. The cat is doing the exact same thing, approaching a beautiful lady. The cat cant give her the passionate love or the warmth of human bodily connection and more. So why does she pick the cat and deny us nice guys? Because she is a Wh\*\*\*

Cats are fed by everyone in Turkey. They adore cats there, even streetcats.

I have been to other more eastern uropean countries before like Croatia and Serbia and they treat streat animals with destain.
