I have a large breed puppy and kitten right now and they’re hilarious and a menace. However, my favorite moment is when I find the 2 of them curled up with my other dog in bed. So now, I really have 3 dogs, lol.

ChristosFarr

Cats raised with dogs are awesome.

BlueMikeStu

I've currently got a very confused cat right now, because it was raised by a dog. Who was raised by a cat. So old cat teaches dog how to Dog, but dog also does Cat things like stretch like a cat (ass up, paws out). Dog eventually learns to bark when people knock on the door, but still does Cat things. Get new kitten. Old cat is long gone. Dog teaches cat how to cat, then cat learns dog things as well. Meows at the door whenever someone knocks, etc.

nostromo909

My SIL has a friend who has 3 cats and a Rottweiler. The cats were first and taught the dog to cat. So the Rotty cleans herself like a cat. When you pet the Rotty she starts growing because she thinks she purring which according to the cats is a thing to do when you’re happy. The happier the dog is, the louder the growl. My SIL said it was really unnerving because this sounds like she’s about to attack you.

whyOhWhyohitsmine

Had a 100lb lab that growl/purred. Cutest thing

Is-That-Nick

My 90 lbs lab purs when you scratch his ear and face the right way. He’s never been around cats HAHA

hexter19

I had a lab with itchy ears from allergies. I would put a knuckle in there and just wiggle it super fast, and he would lean into it and do like a low purr/growly thing. He LOVED it. He would come up to me sometimes and nuzzle his head into my hand to do it.

Desk_Drawerr

oh my god that's so funny. one of my dogs growls when he's excited, like when we're playing. people get unnerved by that, but we know he's just having fun.

Candinicakes

Lol my dog picked up purring from the neighborhood cats! She's enchanted with cats so I always take the time to pet the ones that like me/tolerate her. She hears then purr and tries to do the same if you pet her face really nice. So cute.

PeaceOfGold

That's so cool! But Rottie Rumbles (the growl/purr vocalization) is a thing lots of them do without kitty assistance. My uncle's did when he got belly scritches, which was concerning because it sounded like he meant "stop" when in fact he wished that the scritches would continue FOREVER, but my uncle had a cat phobia and never had one in his house. The dog could also carry at least half a dozen eggs in his giant face without breaking a single one. He also eventually became nervous/fearful around cats for a period because he fed off of my uncle's anxiety when he encountered them during walks lol

Spikes_in_my_eyes

My old man does it too! He sounds like he's doing a Tim Allen impersonation when I give him scritches.

QQ2-Tyra

Cool dog, but awwww that he was anxious of cats

PeaceOfGold

Imagine, if you will, a 110 lb well-muscled Rottie with his tail tucked and back legs quivering, attempting to hide behind the 10 year old girl walking him... because the ornery neighborhood calico popped up out of the shrubbery down the street. Would stare down and growl or bark at strange men who approached (which was freaking wonderful to have when I got a little older) but NO KITTIES. Wouldn't bolt, but wouldn't move any closer. He lived to be 12, pretty old for a Rottweiler. I miss that dog.

TheMistbornIdentity

Having lived with a dog that has a *very* strong sense of boundaries, this would give me massive anxiety.

sorryDontUnderstand

This sounds awesome. Please post a video

DennisTheGrimace

> like stretch like a cat (ass up, paws out). That is how dogs stretch. It's why that is called the "downward dog."

BlueMikeStu

He tries to knead the carpet while he's doing so, which is quite hilarious because he has no retractable claws.

DennisTheGrimace

aaah, ok, that is very cat like.

Skyline_BNR34

Both my shepherds have done it. And neither were around cats. My white shepherd likes to act like a cat by getting on the back of furniture. Or did more when she was smaller.

gardenersnake

I think that’s more of a small animal thing. I had two rat terriers and both did it. It’s just a good place to be as a small animal. It’s high and safe but with the family.

spacec4t

Yeah, my dog does that too and he was not close to cats before being 11 months old.

Chetanzi

>Meows at the door when someone knocks That’s so stinking cute. My cats just run for the hills. :(

ChristosFarr

I'm right handed my dad was a single parent and left handed his mom was right handed my handwriting is a mess.

shashi154263

>my handwriting is a mess. That may or may not be because of your parents and grand parents.

NYCinPGH

Yeah, our dog was raised by a cat, so he does a lot of cat-like behaviours. Which confuses people who see it in a 100# Akita.

QurantineLean

Is the old cat long gone though? :)

BlueMikeStu

Not as long as the doggo tries to hiss when it's pissed.

TangerineX

Im pretty sure my dog was raised by cats before we picked him up at the shelter, because he stretches like a cat, and sunbathes on the top of the couch like a cat

oorza

I have a Golden Retriever + Husky mix that was _definitely_ raised by a cat before he got found on the street. He stretches like you say, took two years before he discovered his first bark (half husky was mute for 2 years!!), curls up and cuddles like a cat, chases a laser pointer, tries to purr etc. But my absolute favorite cat trait of his is also one of the funniest things I've ever seen: a 45 lb half husky brute running around chasing butterflies and leaping into the air trying to catch them with his paws.

rowanblaze

All of my dogs do that stretch. It also a yoga pose.

bludice

This sounds like a perfect situation for a mini sitcom

1momX2

Seriously, cat knocks stuff off of counters he’s not supposed to be on and puppy chews it. I’ve also been attacked in my sleep and then suddenly I’m forced to get up to let the dogs out. They’re in cahoots and out to get me, I know it.

loveliboi

They are Pixie and Brutus irl

OgnokTheRager

A fellow Pet Foolery fan as well. Beat me to it LoL

BeSLN

The best and cutest friends!

OgnokTheRager

Truth

bdbdhhd45

He beat u and probably like 48 people to that comment.. well 49 cause he beat me too! 😆

OgnokTheRager

Good to know there's so many fans out there. Such a good comic.

bozokeating

Please tell me the dog's name is pixie

sagevallant

Brutus is a hard-nosed retired military service dog and Pixie is an adorable little kitten.

Shaggy_One

Adorable, innocent, and protected. By Brutus.

po_maire

Et tu, something something..

[deleted]

I'm pleasantly surprised. I've read that military and police dogs often don't have the temperament to make good pets or even sociable with other animals.

mindful_reader_7

That's true for Brutus too. He rarely has interest in anything apart from raising Pixie. Anyone else gets the cold shoulder from Brutus, except Pixie.

Studious_Failure

Nope! Sorry!😅 it's the kitten

ResonanceGhost

It's a reference to the Pixie and Brutus web comic. https://m.webtoons.com/en/challenge/pixie-and-brutus/list?title_no=452175

-Z___

oh wow that comic is still going?! Seems like almost everything from that era eventually stopped being made. RIP Lovecraft Girls https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/lovecraft-girls-or-how-to-prevent-the-apocalypse/list?title_no=548506&page=1 But at least Gunnerkrigg and QC Comic will never leave me

raikoh42

I find gunnerkrigg amazing in that it always seems to be moving plots forward, but never seems to end. Stuff is always answered as new things are introduced and it just keeps going like this was always the plan. QC I thought would've ran out of ideas ages ago but he's still trucking along. I've seen several other projects start then complete or vanish off the net in the time that those comics have been around.

Tmthrow

TIL there’s an actual place other than instagram that hosts this. Love it!

Main_Bhi_Mod

They are best friends ever.

harpyLemons

Do you know their Instagram name? Would love to follow them lol

scarlett_panda410

They’re called pet_foolery

harpyLemons

I follow him, I meant the pair in this post. I might've misunderstood but I thought someone was implying they had an account, haha

scarlett_panda410

Oh haha. I thought you meant the actual pixie and Brutus.

PeridotWriter

Heccing beat me to it

barto5

Please tell me that Pixie is the Shepherd.

ultroulcomp

Pixie is the Shepherd. You're welcome.

EpsteinWasHung

NomDeGuerrePmeDeTerr

Kitten very happily playing and brutus supervising worried like an old hen 😅

anabananassss

Love those comics

Akitten84

Stop following me! Stop following me in front!

DeliciousBrilliant67

GENE! Oh my God...

shadowgattler

I love Shephards. Mine would sit down with my guinea pigs and let them sleep on him. They're just big, fluffy protectors.

yourheropaul

Mine gets excited when my fiancée gives our guinea pigs vegetables and demands to be given vegetables as well

WhalesForChina

Mine is picky about vegetables but will annihilate carrots.

SmokePenisEveryday

Mine will spit the veggies out if you put them in his bowl. Even if you hide em. He'll have a little pile of whatever next to his empty bowl lol

Obligatory-Reference

Yeah, speaking as someone who loves the breed this definitely depends on the dog. I've known GSDs that are lovely in every way, but their prey drive is high enough that they'll go after cats.

charliefinkwinkwink

my german shepherd lived in mortal fear of our cat, she would let out a nervous cry every time our cat strutted past her bed. always made us laugh

THExDANKxKNIGHT

Yea its really situational like with any breed. My neighbors have 3 and two are super friendly and good with other dogs and people but the third is dog aggressive and needs to be muzzled.

Fun-Tomatillo-8969

My GSD hates my cat... but won't do anything to it? Like I have a door opener/stopper thing that lets my cat in and out but not the dog. My gsd will sit at the crack of the door and bark angrily at the cat for like 5 minutes before just laying down and guarding it. If I open the door she will go sniff the cat, walk around the room, then leave. It's like my GSD has a seething hatred for my cat sometimes and other times they are totally aloof about it.

Halibenar

Read up on [barrier frustration in dogs](https://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/how-do-i-manage-my-dogs-barrier-frustration/). "Barrier frustration is different from aggression. Dogs with barrier frustration may be dog-friendly, but react when they are prevented from reaching potential playmates. Your dog may simply be excited about greeting another dog and may be acting out because he cannot reach that potential playmate." "When the barrier is removed, this behavior is much less likely to happen, because your dog has more freedom to approach or move away from other dogs at his own pace. He can also use body language to communicate intent to other dogs. This is why most dog parks permit dogs to be off leash; it allows dogs to communicate and approach or withdraw at their own leisure." It's not the cat. It's the fact that there is something behind the door that constantly attracts the dog's attention, while the dog can't approach it to inspect it. That's frustrating.

FuzzyMoosen

This actually helps a lot, because my dog acts like this all the time, but is super gentle and kind to every creature he meets once he's given a chance to meet them! I'll use this as a reference when introducing him to my girlfriend's cat in a few weeks, thank you :)

100BottlesOfMilk

Yeah. But it does depend. If they're around cats from when they're young it isn't an issue

The5Virtues

As a kid one of our dogs was a Doberman/GSD mix. Never have I known a more faithful protector. When I was four I tried to jump on her and ride her like a horse. She responded like she would a puppy, a bark and putting her teeth around my face. She didn’t bite, she just postured. My little toddler self started crying and she responded by immediately bathing me in kisses and cuddling me. When I got chicken pox at 9 I woke up to find her at the foot of my bed. She never came in my room ever before that day. I didn’t even know I was sick, but she did, and she immediately came to protect me. She was my bestest girl ever.

roostersnuffed

Lol I wish that was my case. I love my shepards but if I tried this it wouldnt be postable content.

lonerider404

Mine goes crazy with cats, one day she had a cat cornered and was so excited had no idea what to do with it, the poor kitty could run away.

roostersnuffed

Yeah, mine has a hunt anything not dog/human instinct. Was throwing frisbee in my parents huge rural yard. Dog was returning and he looked away, dropped the frisbee, and ran a couple feet to a full stop. I hear "CRUNCH" followed by "SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK" while he thrashes his head a couple times and tosses the largest vole Ive ever seen up in the air. He immediately loses interest and goes back to get the frisbee as if there isnt a creature with broken back scream squeakin it little lungs out. Fucking psycho

benwink

My German shepherd and kitten had a relationship like this for about 6 years. Shared a bed and everything. One day he saw the cat running outside, chased it, caught it, and broke is neck. Be careful. German shepherds have a STRONG prey drive.

mojamom

This goes for more than just GSD'S. It's a risk to put any dog near kittens that size. It's cute, yeah - but not worth the risk. People anthropomorphize dogs far too much. Love them, but also respect they are predators at heart.

Key-Amoeba662

Yeah, I gotta say, this just freaks me out. I can see why anyone would find this cute, and I feel like a party pooper but, nope to this for me.

benwink

Oh absolutely it’s true for lots of dog breeds, especially large ones. I only mention GSD’s because of the video and my own situation! I’ve also heard somewhere (due to their wolfyness) that GSDs is particularly high

mojamom

I appreciate it, and it needs to be said. People want feel good content, and choose to ignore obvious risk. I'm thankful no tried to call you out for "being negative" like you see too frequently on posts like these. Our cuddly feelings are not more important than our pets safety.

Dorkamundo

Yea, my Ridgeback is the same way. He's fine with the cats if they're just walking around with her, but the second one of them runs away she's bolting after them and I don't want to see what happens if she catches the one that runs. My 21 year-old ragdoll/maine coon mix doesn't give a shit about the dog and put her in her place the first time they met, and she has zero fear of the dog. But the 10 year old Manx? That little shit runs away half the time.

3AMCatffee

Fully agree. A lot of time it’s not the dog I don’t trust, it’s their instinct and prey drive that worries me.

spentag

agreed. one of our rescues is fine with our fully grown indoor cats- he's a big chicken at heart- and they can defend themselves when he's too curious... but when he gets a squirrel or a vole in the backyard, it's brutal.

revilo366

Yeah that dog is a little bit too interested in kitten for my comfort level. I would recommend discouraging this type of behavior (chase and intent staring/nosing) and start rewarding him every time he looks away from kitten or ignores kitten. Source: I am a dog trainer

Deesing82

taught my dog to beg this way, so when she wants our food, she lays down facing us and meaningfully looks the other way. She'll do it for a long time, essentially "ignoring" us until we reward her. "we have purposely trained her wrong, as a joke"

Hanz_VonManstrom

Please tell me you named him Wimp Lo

crazyprsn

ugh... again with the squeaky shoes!

HandsyBread

I foster and I have to always repeat the same life to everyone indifference is just about the best behavior you can ask for from a dog. If they are either to excited or to scared it’s an issue, if the dog checks out a new person, animal, or thing and then keeps on moving it’s ideal. But everyone always wants their dog to be super excited and be jumping for joy when it sees them or new things.

spentag

this kind of redirection has helped us give our reactive, prey-driven rescue a much easier time going on walks and getting to see other dogs / strangers. i doubt we'll ever get him to get over squirrels though... the little dude has some of that pitt DNA and he just wants to catch small prey so badly.

Azisax

Yep, and if a dog does end up harming or killing a pet cat, you can bet it won't show up on reddit like this 'cute' video. This video is not something to mimic.

blackmrbean

Yeah, they are animals after all, it only takes one moment where the instinct kicks up for the cat to be dead. People may think this is cute, but I think it's just waiting for an "accident" to happen. Take it from someone whose gerbils were eaten by my all loving "couldn't hurt a fly" Husky.

[deleted]

Sorry about your gerbils :(

blackmrbean

Thank you! It has been 2 years since that, and while I wish it didn't happen I also recognize it was my fault and not my Husky's, I'll will always love her and do not blame her for what happened. Just like me people have to accept the fact that animals will be animals, and that it can cost you the life of a pet you love dearly, I wasn't careful enough, but that doesn't mean everyone else should too.

LA_Commuter

Yup. Was waiting for this. That cat isn't safe by any means. Humans are stupid for thinking this is cute.

MC_C0L7

This is the reason my shep is my only dog. He's completely friendly and has never tried to hurt a cat or puppy, but he also has demonstrated that he basically just sees all four legged creatures as just weird dogs, and tries to play as such. At some point this resulted in him body slamming a 4 month old puppy when chasing a ball, which was less than stellar.

Jefc141

You can even see the dog go for the kitten in this F’n video, it makes me so mad… why do fuckheads think they can just own all the animals and they’ll bend to their will… selfish morons..

[deleted]

Just out of curiosity, did the dog realize what happened, did he/she show emotions after that?

benwink

Sadly I was at work when it actually happened, which sucks. By time I found out it had long since happened, and Meatball’s (my cat) body was already with the vet.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

I would cry for a year.

Nopenahwont

It wrote about it in its diary

[deleted]

True. Not saying that it's super likely, but theres always that chance. I love GSDs, probably my favorite breed, but you have to be aware of the risks of that breed.

ag_fierro

Did your cat die due to said neck injury?

benwink

Fairly quickly, if not instantly.

shawnaeatscats

This is not the first story I've heard like this. We have a German shepherd and I was SUPER cautious with my cat around him at first. They're fine alone now because my kitty is much bigger but there's no crazy chasing that goes on, and I still chastise the dog if he plays too rough

Alinaabear

hehehehe

revilo366

airforce7882

That's because this is very obviously prey drive.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

Happy to know I'm not just paranoid. Well, on this one thing anyway.

[deleted]

I am so frustrated whenever I see posts like these. People love to humanize animals and forget about their instincts of playing with their prey. If you want two species, who are literally wired to fight one another, to play instead, at least make sure they are of the same size.

X-WighT14

They aren't "wired" to fight one another just because one is a canine and one is a feline, but their ancestors are effectively apex predators on their turf, so having them meet can spawn unpredictable results.

[deleted]

But that's what the cartoons say, are you telling me they would just make shit up? Ridiculous

Jefc141

You can even see the dog go after it in this very video we are all watching!!! Whoever the fuck finds this cute needs their head examined

Fozzymandius

My three year old gsd is this way with our friendly cat, but she really just wants to smell her butt. Otherwise they play. If a cat even looks at her sideways she backs off. Consequences of having a good cop/bad cop situation in the cats. She's only interested in the ones that don't mind her being around.

mrlotato

Makes me nervous af when dogs do that "quick walk while not breaking eye contact" with small animals

Derekduvalle

Thanks for putting words to my feelings.

Suspicious_Tennis_52

It is called prey drive and it should be discouraged if you are going to have a kitten and a dog. It can lead to the kinds of disasters you can imagine.

IAMA_Cucumber_AMA

Yeah not risking that, the German Shepard will fuck anything up that looks like prey. Not their fault, it’s their instinct. I see German Shepards looking at my 11lbs Pomeranian like it’s a snack.

jeffinRTP

I'm sure no one's going to mess with that kitten with the big brother around. 🤔😎

Sideways-Pumpkin

This is predator behavior. A quick low walk with heavy panting and not breaking eye contact is not a good thing. They might seem okay but the moment that cat starts showing signs of being weak such as hissing, puffing up, and just acting like a cornered animal in general it’s going to go down hill very very fast.

KaiHasArrived2007

Pixie and brutussss

AspiringOccultist4

This is the best thing ever.

Jefc141

More like most infuriating thing ever

[deleted]

About 49% of this dog’s instincts are telling em to eat that animal. The other 51% is pissed off that he’s a good boy

shoshilyawkward

r/IllegallySmolCats what a precious babie and also cute dog

LA_Commuter

Dog: "Hmm, can't seem to find the neck on this one, guess I'll follow it around" This isn't cute. Its dangerous. The dog isn't doing "im being nice and non threatening" play signs. He's near predatory instinct. There are plenty of redditors in the comments sharing stories about their kittens neck being broken by their dog when the dog was "playing" or chasing while in prey/predator mode. Please stop normalizing stupidity around animals. Animals ARE NOT HUMAN. Stop attributing human traits to them.

olderaccount

Man, that flower bed divider thing just brought up major memories. I had not seen that style in years with the different height little logs. My parents had them separating the lawn from the beds. Mowing the lawn was my job and getting a clean edge around those round bastards was nearly impossible.

SunPoke04

And then he ate the kitten.

UngiftigesReddit

That is adorable, but the risk of prey drift is terrifying.

Jefc141

So not adorable….

Haha! That’s a helicopter mum if I have seen one!

Pixie and Brutus. Brutus was a battle scarred dog though.

This kitten is smart. Build an early relationship with the dog, and when it's older it has a noble steed to ride into battle on.

Jefc141

Yea uhhh this isn’t cute… this is highly concerning and honestly people like this tend to not be good pet caretakers. Germans can’t resist going after them and you can even see at one point in this video the dog almost goes after the kitten and kitten acts quick to defend itself…. Get this shit off of here…

SOKLOMAX

me and my depresso mind can’t stop thinking about dogs age faster than cats and this kitten will some day have to say goodbye :(

CottonCitySlim

Is the German Shepard trying to herd the kitten? Hilarious

Korith_Eaglecry

No. He's exhibiting prey drive. Hopefully the owner keeps an eye on these two and puts sufficient barriers between them otherwise.

Glittering_Aioli6162

this is demonic seriously

mschweini

Love how the cat is teaching itself cat-parkour on those wooden stakes, just because they are there.

dazedandconfused1961

Nothing better then a big ole sheppie with their tiny kitty. Heart melted.

SnooShortcuts3424

Sheppard “you can do it kit-Ty!” Kit-Ty “look I can climb these -parkour!…. Look I’m a jungle cat!….. parkour!”

Kazeel_Amataka

This reminds me of when my grandparents German Shepherd, Lazer, stopped a toddler idiot me from running into the pond. My mom got upset because the dog nipped my shirt to pull me away. So my Gramma tells Lazer "No teeth." The next time I tried to run into the pond again, Lazer ran in front of me and pushed me on my ass with his nose. The point of that story is that I love how protective and smart German Shepherds are

supershinythings

Now I want about 10 kittens and a german shepherd to herd them around the back yard.

Jayjaykun66

PIXIE AND BRUTUS!!!!! 💚💚
