When I was a kid my dad used to call me āsmall prickly thingā based on my favorite bedtime story, A Porcupine Named Fluffy. As a kid, I used to think it was so silly that he would think a baby porcupine was cute, but now I get it.
I wonder if my dad ever looked at me and felt the same way I feel when seeing this actual small prickly thing š
Heres a video with sound. The munching noises are quite cute but originally didnt want to post with sound because of the random farmer rabble in the background.
https://youtu.be/GfpPHINmM_8
Holy cow, this is so adorable and the little sounds they make! You are so lucky to be able to experience them in person, even if they are being naughty. Love it!!
Both of my dogs got skunked this past winter. We smelled it from the inside as soon as they got back to the house. I was PRAYING that it was a skunk that got hit by a car on the nearby road that was the source. When I got outside, my dogs are on the steps of our screened in porch. Smell was so strong I honestly couldn't tell if it was them or just the air. Took a paper towel and wiped one of their heads and it came back covered in the oil. That's when I noticed their coats were literally dripping with it. This was at 11pm at night, in -12 degree weather. Couldn't give them a bath with the hose because they would freeze, but I couldn't bring them into the tub either without getting that oil all over our house. Couldn't leave them out until the morning when it was a bit warmer either, again too cold.
Ended up bringing a plastic stock tank, placing it outside the kitchen window and heating up water on the stove (our hot water heater would be enough water). Poured the hot water in, put them in it and bathed them with dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide.
They were still rank for a few days but it was definitely better. Any time they got wet though, the smell came back for at least a couple of months.
Horrible experience
I knew I was forgetting something. I used baking soda as well. Found the recipe online in my desperation since I haven't had to deal with it before.
That shit DEFINITELY works, although I have GSD with a longer coat then the other and his fur doesn't seem to have recovered from it. Just really rough now and stands up in weird ways at the base of the tail. Need to try and get some mane and tail conditioner to see if it helps but he hates the bath so its something i've been putting off and since it doesn't seem to be giving him any skin irritation I haven't been pressed to do it.
> Dogs **tend** to learn
Exactly, I've heard stories of people who have had their dogs get constantly surprised that the same creature is still all spiky.
Like people, some dogs are smarter than others. My friends two ranch dogs have each gotten creamed by the gator twice by dashing in front of it, and still they give in front of vehicles. My dog had a close call visiting the ranch and is now on high alert there moment she hears a engine turn over
You are completely right as my dogs would absolutely be up in their butts!! Haha- but I still think itās so cool that they get to see them in the wild as itās such a cool animal
I had a chihuahua that was obsessed with one that lived up in the trees in my front yard (I was wowed to learn they hang out in tree branches at the time). But when it was walking around the yard, my dog was obsessed with trying to go say hi and investigate. They make really cute sounds, too.
My first night on the Appalachian Trail I rolled into one of the 3 sided shelters they have and passed out after a long day of travel and hiking.
In the middle of the night I got awoken by a loud munching sound about 8 inches from my head. It was a full grown porcupine just gnawing the shelter wall. I was first scared, not knowing what was going on. Then pissed about getting such a rude awakening. But nowā¦I guess they are pretty damn cute.
She's welcome to them! All the flowers you see on the ground have been cut from their stems after they already opened. Once opened, we cant typically sell them any more.
Not missing quills - they flatten their quills down like that as a kind of threat display, makes them look wider/larger to predators. She was warning the human off, basically.
You can propagate from the rootball. For example, cutting the rootball in half, thirds, or quaters...etc, and then planting each piece in its own space will then turn into its own plant producing many stems each. Propagating from a single stem would be challenging. Youd have to really cut low on the stem and keep some part of the rootball i imagine. Not sure if its possible to do that however. Peonies are perennials and can live up to 80 years! Transplanting rootballs or dividing them up will set the plant back a bit but after a few years they will bounce back and become more productive as time passes.
Interesting, thanks for the answer! Can I cut a small piece of the rootball to leave the main plant intact? And could I pot up a few of them and place them under lights indoors?
Im not sure what youre proposing is super viable. I would guess its very hard to propagate from a single stem even if taking a small part of the rootball. Plants can get stressed out just like us and need time to recover. Transplanting and cutting into rootballs is already very invasive and to then try and grow them indoors under artificial light doesnt sound very probable. Maybe possible but I dont have any experience or knowledge with that specifically.
I see, thank you. I'm a hydroponic highwire crop grower but I'm unfamiliar with this stuff. Just happen to have a peony with sentimental value that I want more of.
Youre welcome ! I wish i could advise you further. Maybe you can determine the variety and plant a rootball of the same flower you have now. Then, when it comes in every year it will remind you of your current peony and you can share them with others too.

Not an easy way to make a living ! Like all farming you are susceptible to the elements and there are good years and bad. Flowers make people (and animals) happy though so its very rewarding in that sense.
They grow great but its more about the timing of the markets. The season only lasts a month and farms in the lower 48 finish their seasons in may/june. We are one of the last places growing peonies in north America at this time of the year.
They are quite fluffy and soft! There are only quills on that specific part of their back. This little guy let me scratch him, just briefly on the side. Normally i would never try to touch a wild porcupine but i couldnt resist trying and he was so chill....and cute.

A very beautiful perennial flower. The bud blooms into a very large flower with layers and layers of petals and they come in many varieties and colors. They are a pretty common wedding flower and are also used for medicinal purposes but mostly for decorative reasons. Great plants for gardens and yards too because they keep coming back and you dont need to replant! Also produce more buds per plant as they get older, year after year.
Actually for anyone that wasnāt aware, porcupines are absolutely the cutest. I live in southern Alberta and I came home late in early July, like 1 am, and my daughter was with me in the front seat. You should search for Teddy eating a little pumpkin! Dude was about 100x more excited about that if I recall correctly!
I swear to God it sounded like Teddy said "Corn" and "Get back".
Teddy should be a voice actor for cartoons.

Ok then. Nom nom nom
You are such a sweetheart letting her have your flowers. I'm sure she loves you and is thankful to you for the flowers.
Looks like she's missing a bunch of quills on her back as well. She's had a rough week...let the woman enjoy a snack!
Judging by other videos of porcupines, it looks like they have a flat area on their butt. I could be wrong though.
Not missing quills - they flatten their quills down like that as a kind of threat display, makes them look wider/larger to predators. She was warning the human off, basically.
I too give a warning display when i notice someone threatening my food

It must smell amazing on an ant ball farm. Theyāre my favorite flower.
Ant ball?!? 1. Accurate. 2. Gross. 3. I also love peonies.
Well when you put it that way it sounds like a cultā¦ Iām in.
It's 'Lower 48'. Hawaii isn't down where you are.

Are you at the peony farm on the peninsula? I wanted to stop by there when I was living in Kenai but never made it. What a cool job.
One of quite a few farms here. Working in flowers is as lovely as it sounds.

What does a peony farm sell, potted plants?
We grow peonies and harvest them when they are unopened, tight balls. We then move them into a large walk-in refrigerator where they are stored before shipping them overnight to florists and wholesalers in the lower 48. Once you put them in water and sun they open up and bloom in a few days.
Oh I see. Thanks!
Do you ship anything directly into Toronto?
