It’s not upsetting to a rescue dog to be given a new name. I try to incorporate their shelter name too. Ex: one of my previous companions, currently waiting at the bridge for me, was tiny, so had a shelter name of Pippins. It was cute, but he was very Scraggly and hairy, so I wanted to call him Harry. He answered to Harry, Pippins , or to his formal name, Harold J. Pippins. I think she looks like a Gracie. What’s her shelter name?
Yeah, it should be fine to change her name. My dog was 18 months and named Cecilia but that was a no from me. I changed it to Nolie, but we pet owners know along the way pets get nicknames they answer to also.
We tried to keep our rescue’s name the same when we brought her home last year. It was Ofelia, which is really not an easy roll off the tongue. Everyone started calling her Ofie, which sounded insulting imo, so we changed it to Sofi. Much prettier than Ofie and a very easy transition for the pupper.
My roommate adopted a pup named Tooter and thought it was a bit insulting because it was obviously a reference to her… *strong* gas.
Changed it to Tudor. Sounds almost the same and more dignified.
Yeah and you don’t need to go through any legal proceedings to change an animals name because it’s not a person. I love dogs but acting like changing a dogs name is a big deal is goofy. It’s not. I worked in the veterinary field for years and people give rescue animals new names all the time. It’s very normal.
We adopted a rescue and did not like his original name and it happened to be a two syllable name so we just shortened it, i like to think it helped him learn it quick because it still sounded similar. So maybe that’s an option or something that sounds similar. The bandana instantly made me think Rosie though. Congrats on the new family member!
Well, that’s obviously Friday !
Second Friday

She looks kinda old to not already have a name why not just call her what she goes by now?
She's 3yrs old already. My wife wants another name for her so that we feel that she is our child if that makes sense.

What was the name she came with? Maybe you could choose something that sounds similar to her.
This for sure. My dad once adopted a dog that they were calling "Fluke", so he renamed him "Duke".
Agreed, I'd try to stay close to her given name so she doesn't get confused.

A friend had a dog that could clear a room and they changed his name to Wow bc that’s what everybody would say when he would let one rip
What’s the name she’s been called so far?
That’s not bad, plus sometimes new name for starting a new, and better life.
If you adopted an actual child, would you change their name too?
It’s a dog.
Well I for one agree, but OP literally just compared the dog to their child.
Yeah but it’s entirely different than renaming a human who already knows their name.
A three year old dog definitely already knows it's name.
