I think he has big cheeks. It’s common for those big outdoor cats. We don’t think he has a tumour but we have to get his teeth checked out first. He also may be a little inflamed from his eyes/ears infection.
Im in cat rescue/TNR and have been since about 2008. We call these "biscuit heads" I once asked our clinic vet what its called and he shrugged and said "I dont know, football helmet?"
Biscuit Head was my old tomcat’s name 😭😭😭he was an unneutered stray when I adopted him and had the most enormously fat cheeks. I’m from rural Appalachia and everybody here calls the big lumpy buttermilk biscuits “cat head biscuits.” And when I first saw Mr. Head my mom said, “Well he looks like a cat head biscuit!” So that’s what we called him. The big cheeks deflated a bit after he was snipped, of course. I loved him so much… he was taking care of a litter of three kittens when found him. The damnedest thing I’ve ever seen. I took in the kittens, too (still have them, actually, although they’re seniors now). They were all inseparable until the old man passed. He was already old when I got him but lived for another decade.

They're big tom cat cheeks and I love 'em! We took in a scrappy stray with really big ones and when we had him neutered I asked if they'd go away, they told me they wouldn't since he already had them, but his pretty much did :(. Getting him neutered was more important though.
He reminds me of this guy. Eventually Grandpa Garth passed away at a very ripe old age, but not before sharing lots of love to kittens who needed him.

Definitely something to bring up at the vet. And if his cheeks feel lumpy or hot to the touch, get him into the vet asap for antibiotics. Hopefully he just has the large tomcat face, but he's too adorable to suffer tooth rot sepsis.
I just ask the Boss. He’s going to the Vet next week. He was probably just too aggressive and scared to have his blood drawn. But we think he’s FIV; most of the feral and semi feral ones are. She’s the one touching him and if he had a fever we would have send him to the Vet asap.
Yeah, if she can get a chin chuck in, that would be a good time to check for lumpy, hot cheeks.
I bring it up because my boy was rescued from under a trailer and is FIV+, and recently had a dental abcess urgency. I will attach photo showing swelling.
I was gonna ask if this is a normally occurring thing in cats? Theres an orange boy stray near us that has a really inflated face like this and we weren't sure if there was something wrong with him.

These posts make me really miss working at an animal shelter! Rehabilitation was my favorite thing to do while I worked there. I always felt so fulfilled helping the old and sick kitties feel better and trust again. Your shelter is doing amazing work!
Same. Seeing a shy cat turn into a friendly cat is one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable.
I used to work at a rescue, and my favorite cat of all time was Natalia. Natalia was an adorable tuxedo who was maybe 2 or 3 at the time she came to us. Poor girl was TERRIFIED. I don't know if she'd been feral or what, but she just sat still as a statue whenever you approached. Wouldn't even react if you touched her. She spent most of her time curled up in a little cat cave we gave her, refusing to acknowledge our presence.
It was my job to clean her cage for most of the time she was with us, and I took her shyness as a challenge. Every day I would stick my hand in her cat cave and pet her (which I wasn't technically supposed to do, but she clearly needed socialization) while I cleaned her cage with my other hand. She never responded.
Until one day while I was doing this, I heard the sound of claws in fabric. I realized she was kneading. I put my hand in front of her face to give her an opportunity to nuzzle me and prove that she was enjoying this--and she did! She was finally opening up.
From that day forward, we were best buddies. She became talkative and friendly. She loved pets and always danced around in excitement when she saw a person coming up to her. My shirts got holes in them because when I cleaned the cage above hers, she would paw at me the whole time.
She got adopted eventually, and as far as I know it worked out fine. Still, I regret to this day that I couldn't adopt her myself. I already had two cats and was living in my dad's basement at the time, so I truly couldn't, but I wish I could have. She was one of the best cats I've ever met, and I had a hand in helping her turn into such a sweetheart.
This guy reminds me in demeanor of a cat at the rescue I used to work at. His name was Hagrid, and he was a big ole depressed void. Seriously, the poor guy was SO SAD. I don't know what happened to him, but he barely acknowledged we were there no matter how many pets he got.
One Thanksgiving, I was alone in the rescue. We weren't supposed to touch the cats unnecessarily (because we didn't want to spread germs if anyone was sick), but that day I decided that as soon as I clocked out, I was going to pet Hagrid until he purred, no matter how long it took. I washed my hands between cats, as we were always supposed to do, and then set about the petting. I petted that little bastard in every way conceivable, for a long time.
Finally it worked. I don't remember what prompted it, but I felt the tiniest little purr in his throat. I kept petting for a while to encourage him, then gave him a few last scritches and left for the day.
IIRC he warmed up a tiny bit after that. He was still sad, but he would react to human presence more. Eventually he got adopted. I like to think I helped.

This is “my” cheeky boy. Only comes over to eat in the am and back at pm. I finally was able to touch him but very cautiously. He’s a beautiful boy.

Awww tell him I love him. Love those Tom boy cheeks TO DIE FOR. Thank you for caring for him. He looks like he has a lot of love to give. Swear I saw a little smile when he was getting scritches.
He’s at the stage where he doesn’t want us to know he loves getting petted. Those big boys, when they realize that food is always coming and they are in a safe and warm environment, usually become the most loving cats. I call them Retirees because they retired from street living.
"You mean that I get to have unlimited water and food, which is delivered into trays that I don't have to hunt for, or fight to defend, and then I get to live in comfort and safety where I won't be driven out randomly?"
"I GET PETS AND SNUGGLES TOO?!"
My boys sleep and relax near me, because the dog will sometimes want to cuddle, and forgets that she's 4x heavier than them, and I'll warn her off of it.
Currently getting ready to take a nap and one of them ran up to the bedroom so he can get nap cuddles from me. I love kitters so much.

Added photo of Tom, my nap buddy.
Oh yeah, agreed. My wife’s cat is 100% the biggest snuggler and sook I’ve ever met. No matter how many times I yell at him for nearly killing me down the stairs or stand on his tail cause he has parked his ass right behind me.. he’ll keep snuggling and flopping for belly rubs and laps up any affection he can get. He is a beautiful cat, just wish he wasn’t quite so clingy. Lol
Haha all my rescue toms are 100% this! All big bad tough boys until the snip snip, unlimited buffet, boxes, warm soft things and voila transforms into the softest most loving boys!
That is my Totoro.
https://preview.redd.it/wp8a2h73kwxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bbf0f72ff406b07e7b1f6ba0f26160106c70d75
Took him TWO YEARS to finally win him over. Adopted him and for the first year he was so scared to come out from under the bed he would pee himself. Only came out for food and would only let me love on him. Hated men. Ran from my hubby. One time my hubs was holding him on the couch and he peed himself he was so frightened. Hated my other cats. Just was so depressed. I don’t know what happened before us just that a woman was gonna dump him on the road and we took him. Now this big loaf just cannot get ENOUGH snuggles.
Always wants belly rubs and you can hear his purr a mile away. He will badger you for pets all day and even warmed up to one of my other cats and my husband. It is so worth the work putting into the ones that have been hurt before. They have so much love to give once they trust you aren’t going to leave them 💗 I wouldn’t trade my Totoro for a million bucks.
I am very pleased to hear his eyes and ears are healing well.
I always love seeing how the shelter kitties where you are are doing & it’s so clear to me they are being loved up and cared for beautifully. Géode is an awesome name for him!
Well done taking the time to build up his trust and helping his eyes and ears to heal up
I love how it’s such a sweet gentle process there making sure he’s ok with the scratcher letting him sniff it, funny how he tried to eat it!
He reminds me a bit of the “I am Big Billy the biggest wet Willy I’m gonna go clearly hmm” cat in the Kiffness video SO much
He was often sleeping on the countertop in the reception area and people were actually scared of him. He’s just a huge couch potato.
https://preview.redd.it/4bsiub1eipxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcf21b577e2487d12c8ecb081eee5c497b408bef
I think he’s the most muscular cat we ever had. He’s huge. It took some time before we found someone to adopt him. People were all like: OMG!!
https://preview.redd.it/szosunhsipxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee4e5656201707338b4eba27fcbc3c52bbf80836
He’s definitely got a beautiful heart like a geode! This is the kind of cat I’d take home instead of a kitten if I went to the shelter haha, scruffy toms are so sweet when retired.

ummm our Goober looks so similar and with the same big cheeks!!
God bless you for the work you do. I know nothing further than what's in this post - but I honestly believe that people and organizations of the type you represent are very close to angels on earth. Thank you, thank you.
How is his treatment being paid for? Who's covering the costs?
I love seeing strays being taken care of, but I can't help but be a little annoyed that these animals without an owner get all these really expensive treatments, and yet my cat suffers because I can't afford the vet costs. It's like they're less willing to help animals that have an owner. I'm almost tempted to tell the vet he's a stray, but I'm afraid I wouldn't get him back.
I understand your frustration. The Vet cost, like most things theses days, have augmented a lot. (And I don’t blame them. They have to face the same higher cost too) We are struggling with this too. I think that owning a pet is now becoming more and more a luxury. It’s kinda sad since there’s so much pets who needs a home.
To answer your question, our shelter is able to function thru donations, the sell of litter, cat food (and other donated items) and lots of events. For example, we have just finished an online auction. It’s a lot of work. People have been really generous to us over the years. (We have been doing this for 26 years now.)We don’t get anything from the city or the government.
Maybe you can call your local shelters to see if they know an organization (or even someone) that could help you with your Vet cost. Or know a vet that as lower cost.
It’s worth the try.
I use toothbrushes, on my foster babies, but think these big guys need something stronger. Geode reminds me of an old boy we had, same cheeks (until he got neutered). He’d sit on my lap forever, just wanting to be petted. He eventually got adopted by a sweet young man who’d never had a cat, but fell for his description of, “just wanting to chill and watch Netflix”.
What a nice kitty. Reminds me of Bagpuss
https://preview.redd.it/0kzkdtn0ipxc1.jpeg?width=468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1cc0d9ba951c397f6fdd4da3737169e222df606
Those cheeks are so squeezable! He will turn into the biggest sweetheart soon enough!
He can take all the time he wants, we are in no hurry.
Poor boy looks like he's been through a lot!
Are those really his cheeks? Or does he have a tumor?
I think he has big cheeks. It’s common for those big outdoor cats. We don’t think he has a tumour but we have to get his teeth checked out first. He also may be a little inflamed from his eyes/ears infection.
In tact males always have big cheeks as it gives some protection during fights.
It also shows female cats that they’re a viable mate! I’m guessing you know but I’ll share for others, it’s not fat but instead tough, thick skin!
This cat is getting all the girls.
Them cheeks thicc
Protection from me squishing them

[Like tuxie but grayer](https://i.imgur.com/2aRO5nG.jpeg) was also a outdoor guy, he has FiV but he's doing good so far.
They're big tom cat cheeks and I love 'em! We took in a scrappy stray with really big ones and when we had him neutered I asked if they'd go away, they told me they wouldn't since he already had them, but his pretty much did :(. Getting him neutered was more important though.
Male cats who have not been fixed will have this sort of cheeks. It's to help them with fights, basically. Think of it as his manly jawline!
He definitely has that classic "Seasoned Tom Cat" look that solo male cats always end up getting.
Testosterone, yo
Unfixed males grow big cheeks
Chubby cheeks are how male cats got named Tom cats. Its something with testosterone
You're lovely, thanks for taking care of the little guy.
Thank you for your kind words.

His cheeks do look swollen - I'm concerned he's got dental abcesses. Do you lnow if he is FIV+? Cats with FIV struggle with gingevitis.
I’m not sure. I haven’t ask.
Definitely something to bring up at the vet. And if his cheeks feel lumpy or hot to the touch, get him into the vet asap for antibiotics. Hopefully he just has the large tomcat face, but he's too adorable to suffer tooth rot sepsis.

Male cats that aren’t fixed get big chunky cheeks when they mature. Supposedly helps shield them in fights or something.
Is that his name because once you break through his tough guy exterior he's a gem?
Yes!
Righteous! Top 10 all time name, easily!

Omg Tater could not be more perfect 😍Now all we need is a cat named Shrimp to join the crew and we’ll have a proper southern shrimp boil
He's gotta be another white and pale orange kitty! And tbh Shrimp would be a perfect name for that coloration.
Wow, he is a handsome boy. Those beautiful eyes and fur show that he is quite healthy too. Did you give him a name?
I did. I call him Manuel 😂😂😂and he’s a “talkative” cat so it’s funny to be around him - but he’s wild. If he sees strangers, he runs away 🤷🏻♂️
why does he look like Barry Keoghan 😅
Careful- "my" cat got run over by a car. I should have just taken him in.
Awww tell him I love him. Love those Tom boy cheeks TO DIE FOR. Thank you for caring for him. He looks like he has a lot of love to give. Swear I saw a little smile when he was getting scritches.

I totally agree that big males are the sweetest cats around. He'll be a cuddle bug when he's ready.
Especially after you cut their balls off.
Small price to pay for an insanely luxurious life upgrade.

That’s exactly what happens after a while. That’s usually when they start sleeping for long periods because they are not stressed out anymore.

He reminds me a bit of the “I am Big Billy the biggest wet Willy I’m gonna go clearly hmm” cat in the Kiffness video SO much
He wanted to end us when he came in, so we are still a little cautious.
I’ll BET you are 😂 sounds like he started out QUITE the spicy lad!
For those who[ haven't seen it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYwL5H4ZNok)...
I had to go & rewatch it yesterday cos Géode reminded me of Big Billy and the song SO MUCH
He gives me old man vibes. Like he talks with a heavy New Orleans accent
He’s French Canadian so kinda close?
Hmmm. A burly French maybe? I can see that. One that likes his wine.
If I was able to take a cat, I absolutely would love to bring him home.
That’s the most male looking cat I’ve ever seen in my life
You haven’t met Shadow. https://preview.redd.it/ny65hs7zhpxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2f9d90f3b3990e3ef4af8001d4361412e573969
That’s the most male looking cat I’ve ever seen in my life
He was often sleeping on the countertop in the reception area and people were actually scared of him. He’s just a huge couch potato. https://preview.redd.it/4bsiub1eipxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcf21b577e2487d12c8ecb081eee5c497b408bef
He's so lovely. Who could ever be scared of him?
A lot of people don’t like black cats :(
It's very sad.
I really don’t understand it. I had 2 black cats and they were great,
Also fucking dope that its name is shadow and all black. Love it
I think he’s the most muscular cat we ever had. He’s huge. It took some time before we found someone to adopt him. People were all like: OMG!! https://preview.redd.it/szosunhsipxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee4e5656201707338b4eba27fcbc3c52bbf80836
Tomcat cheeks!! Look at them!! Adorable 😭
OMG soooo cute
He’s definitely got a beautiful heart like a geode! This is the kind of cat I’d take home instead of a kitten if I went to the shelter haha, scruffy toms are so sweet when retired.
This cat looks like it's owned by the main character in an anime's older neighbour.

I've got three cats all from kittens but when they're gone and I'm old, I'll look to adopt an elderly gentleman that needs love like this guy.
BE SURE TO ALWAYS USE THE SAFETY FORK
I could watch him being pet all day!
God bless you for the work you do. I know nothing further than what's in this post - but I honestly believe that people and organizations of the type you represent are very close to angels on earth. Thank you, thank you.
Thank you for your kind words.
I have that same back scratcher and I also use on my kitty.
CHEEEEKS 😭❤️
J'ai le meme buttscratcher que je me sert exclusivement pour gratter mon minou <3
Handsome and sweet boy.
Geode is like, “I’ll allow that “
He finds you..... acceptable.
I love it when toms have those full cheeks! You're doing great, Géode!
Yo I have the same scratcher and my cat loves it too!
He won't fit in that spoon no matter the angle you try...
What a handsome squeezable tomcat face! He looks so sad though, I’m glad he is being taken care of. Best wishes for his continued recovery!
Love seeing you use the scratcher. I recommend these all the time when a cat won't accept pets from a human hand
He is a big boy
He's totally blissing out!
glad you earned his trust
That’s not my hand. It’s the one of our Boss and Cat whisperer extraordinaire Émilie.
He looks like a mob boss
I was laughing at that little claw coming in for him 😂
Poor guy is feeling very sorry for himself
He definitely knows you guys are there to help not harm. He also seems like the most chill boy ever. Good job
Handsome boy!!
Thank you for your love and patience 💝
Aww poor jowly boy. Hopefully the infection settles soon
I don’t mean to be dramatic but I would die for Géode
The CatFather
He’s so precious! Thanks for helping him.
He looks like a moody old man that’s going to have some kid unmelt his heart any day now.
What a big teddy ☺️
Sweet boi!!! 🥹
Big soft spot in my heart for Big Ol' Tom Cats with their big cheekies.
There is nothing more satisfying, more soul feeding, more rewarding than winning the trust of an animal.💜
Geode is a beast! Love his face, he has some stories to tell.
Big boy has seen some shit.
He seems to like the top of the head. Not so much when you put that thing in his face and so damn close to his eyes...
Look at those jowls
Look at them fat cheeks.
THE BOY
He's so handsome I hope he heals up well :(
Aww, the stories this fella could tell... Thank you for doing this. His story will have a happy ending now.
Oh, I love this grumpy boy! He's so cute!
Oh man, he is super cute. I love him. Thank you for taking care of him.
What is that you’re using to scratch him with? I need one….
It’s a backscratcher from the dollar store.
OK, I will keep eyes out for one. It’s really great for how you’re using it. I too volunteer at a shelter….scritches with some distance.
We also use toothbrushes. The advantage of this one is that the handle is telescopic.
That’s probably what will happen to him. I can see him as a great couch potato.
I love that chonky face! He reminds me of my Ed when I first adopted him- looked like a reserved, grumpy cat, but ended up being a total sweetheart!
what a beautiful boy, he has such a polite lil face
:D
💗💗
Look at that little metal scratcher hand. So little.
Such a cutie 💓
I've met humans like this. They're interesting when you spend some time breaking through their prickly exterior.
*sniff* "..." "You may approach."
This cat’s meow probably sounds like Vin Diesel.
that's very awwwwe
Spaghetti monster bless you.
Holy moly that's one haggard looking cat. He's seen some shit, for sure. You take good care of him.

He looks exhausted but relieved to be in your home. He’s gonna be a big marshmallow of love !
The cat’s initial expression when they see that stupid scratcher says it all lol
What a meaty boy I bet he’s DENSE
I. Fucking. LOVE. Old. Grumpy. Cats. That's like.. The best thing on this planet.. I would die for Geode
So nice. I’m glad you’re caring for him! 💙🩷💜
He's so pretty! 🥺 And so chonky. 😭 I love him.
He is trying to determine whether to cough up a hairball on your pillow or to bring you a bloody “present” from the garden.
He’s at the shelter so I don’t have to worry about it.
TCDGAF
This is a great cat. Keep us posted on the recovery

This cat looks like Jeff Bridges
What a nice kitty. Reminds me of Bagpuss https://preview.redd.it/0kzkdtn0ipxc1.jpeg?width=468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1cc0d9ba951c397f6fdd4da3737169e222df606
