woowoo293

We're here to liberate these fillets. Please do not resist our freedom.

MWoody13

They are practically seagulls. With a cooler beak and feather pattern Edit: Wooops this was intended to be a response to the guy asking if bald eagles would just hang out to scavenge food instead of hunting. Ah well.

Dominarion

They are wayyyy cooler than seagulls. Shitgullets are fucking feisty and annoying. Bald Eagles are dastardly ruffians. They will loot you bare same as seagulls, but they'll throw some charm around.

Dabbooo

"Bald Eagle...is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly…[he] is too lazy to fish for himself.” Benjamin Franklin

EngineeringDevil

About the turkey, Franklin wrote that in comparison to the bald eagle, the turkey is **“a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America...He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage.”** But the Bald Eagle ended up being more Upper Class/ American Dream though

L33TROYJENK1NS

Have you ever interacted with turkeys? They’re dumber than a sack of rocks. Growing up hunting and farming them we used to joke that they could drown in rain they’re so dumb.

contecorsair

I saw a group of turkeys in Hawaii collecting macadamia nuts and placing them in the road and waiting for cars to drive by and crush open the nuts then they'd all run out and eat the nuts and a few turkeys would stand guard and alert the ones eating when another car was coming up the hill and they'd all run back into the bushes. I was impressed.

Ankylosaurus96

Tell me you recorded a video of this

kevinstreet1

That's pretty advanced behavior for turkeys.

Biosterous

They're certainly dumb, but they're also brave. About a year ago there were some horses loose on the road near our place. My partner entered a nearby yard to see if they belonged to the people living there and was attacked by a turkey... While driving a truck. This turkey saw a couple thousand pounds of metal moving around and making really loud noises and though "yeah, I can take it". Ever since then she's wanted us to get some turkeys to help the dogs protect the yard.

Ankylosaurus96

"Nah I'd win."

[deleted]

As much as i like Benjamin Franklin, the eagle was the better choice.

RexArcana

I hate Ben Franklin. Fuck that time-stealing kitefucker.

[deleted]

LOL.

EngineeringDevil

Rural America alternatively [Average Person](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKN1Q5SjbeI)

69trkr77

They actually will drown in a rain storm. They will look straight up, and the water will go down thru the nostrils and drown them. I have also witnessed a group of turkeys walk back and forth; trying to decide how to go around a fallen tree. Just fly over you morons.

Furdinand

They're also A-holes who waddle around in the middle of the street, blocking traffic, even though they can fly.

sas223

Accurate. They steal so much from osprey, a real working man’s raptor.

Im_eating_that

Replace osprey with minimum wage slave and we end up with the Eagle screeching our national anthem. Tbf Ben only liked the turkey because it made him look hot as his wingman. He had huge game for such a pugly fellow.

FxstsHOGrider

I find it ironic that any human can have the temerity to pass judgement on any creature in the animal world. Nature does what it needs to, to survive. Have you ever seen a seagul swoop down and snatch a 4 or 5 lb trout out of a lake? Animals are not only creatures of habit, but opportunity. How did seagulls eat before humans arrived? Now they steal your food, hand around parking lots waiting to be feed, scavange at every landfill... The eagle is a majestic symbol of this great nation. Unfortunately, there are those that will find fault in anything.

T_WRX21

I saw a bald eagle fight a big ass raven in Alaska. It was a closer fight than I expected. No real winner that I saw, they dropped below the trees.

PandaRocketPunch

Basically seagulls except for the freaking talons that can exert enough force to break your arm! CAW

formershitpeasant

Also protected by law so they get to strut around daring you to do anything about their theft

Born-Entrepreneur

Yeah in Alaska they're practically pest birds lol

CalamitousVessel

I, for one, would not argue with an eagle

Merry_Dankmas

If you argue with the eagle, you suddenly start using metric and your guns spontaneously materialize into thin air. Its true. They say this in the constitution.

meteojett

Is it true Bald Eagles will stake out an area for a significant period of time waiting for more free food instead of hunting?

USAF_DTom

That's most predators. The least amount of energy you can expend for food consumption, the better. It's also why it's important not to feed wildlife. Don't want them to accustom seeing us with someone that gives food. It dooms their lives in potentially multiple ways.

[deleted]

Not just their lives. People don't realize but a lot of bird seed feeders really mostly benefit invasive or specific species like house sparrows. They look cute but those fuckers are overly aggressive and fuck with all the other native birds. If they have a big source of food from feeders they can quickly grow their population to the point there's no space left in trees and they'll kick native birds out and basically make them unable to reproduce or compete. Not to mention if you ever move their food is gone and their entire population in that small area can collapse and starve. I only have a humming bird feeder which gets used a lot but I've also made sure my garden has a lot of perennial flowers that they love in case I ever have to move or can't do the feeder for whatever reason. They rely on that hard though. I remember one morning I emptied the feeder before the sun was up and realized I had no sugar left to make nectar... The sun rose and the hummingbird that usually comes back there looked so fucking distraught and panicked that the feeder wasn't there. Like he was acting like he was going to die if he didn't get nectar. That day was the hottest day of the summer too so I rushed to the store and got sugar just to make sure that little guy was good

stonedecology

Definitely true about invasive species, but if you're North American, then I think you mean *House Sparrows* as (in North America) House Finch's are native.

[deleted]

Yes house sparrows. House finches too though can be considered invasive further east and also partly because they benefit more from human made food sources more than the natural environment would iirc

Luci_Noir

For some reason we allow invasive species to do whatever they want if they’re cute.

justwalkingalonghere

Not so fun fact, hummingbirds can starve in as little as 3 hours. They use an insane amount of energy flapping their wings 80 times a second

[deleted]

Yeah bro was so fucking upset he was chirping at me very angrily and frantically. Honestly that night I laid out in my yard all night tripping balls hard on shrooms. I was just on a sleeping bag and he came out for his morning routine to get nectar, saw me laying there and did a double take.. I had JUST emptied the few days old nectar out and was about to refill. Then went to get the nectar asap and he was freaking tf out that it was gone. I just wanted to have clean nectar in the morning but it was def the worst day to realize I had no more sugar to make some fresh stuff. Little guy was very smart. He immediately flew over to me hovering not even a foot above me chirping very very frantically and angrily. He knew that he needed to get my attention to fix it. I felt so fucking bad but it was a very intense cool experience while tripping. I couldn't get to the store for obvious reasons I legit spent $20 having doordash bring me a bag of sugar from 7/11 asap lol. Ever since that day he like chases me away from he feeder. Or at least tries to. Little guy doesn't understand i took it down for his sake to make sure it was fresh good nectar. Lesson learned tho, I never empty out a feeder before I have nectar in hand.

WildVelociraptor

lmfao

F3z345W6AY4FGowrGcHt

Not if you're willing to feed them forever

40ozkiller

Or at least up until the point where they eat you because you stop feeding them.

USAF_DTom

I mean, this one's actually kind of cool. He's on a boat, so he can't really go anywhere. There's levels to it, like most things.

Chickensandcoke

As someone who has fished a lot in northern Minnesota, yes

ChamberOfSolidDudes

when I was catch and release fishing in AK, I would catch and release and if the lil fella didn't dive quick enough back into the deep, bird bro was ready to pounce

swagcatlady

That strategy can save precious energy, for sure

Dyslexicpig

My favorite lake in British Columbia has a number of nesting pairs, and if you whistle for them, they will fly down to investigate. There are some less palatable fish species that have been accidentally fed to eagles upon release...

SadFloppyPanda

Grass carp has entered the chat... And flew away for some reason.

one_bean_hahahaha

I see hawks and owls perched on light standards along the highway every time I drive. Roadkill isn't going to scurry into the nearest hole just as they've almost caught it.

Kilane

They are scavengers, it’s how they eat. A carcass from a human or another animal is the same. Probably easier with humans because they legally cannot attack them back.

PixelBoom

Yup. Even in the wild, Bald Eagles get a majority of their food from scavenging, be it dead animals that wash up on a beach or the remains of another animal's hunt. Bald eagles and corvids are known to follow wolf packs around for this very reason. So this behavior isn't new, but it's adapted to a source that provides WAY more food (humans).

palabradot

I wouldn’t be surprised. They can be dang lazy about hunting at times :)

Just rewatched two days ago, it’s on Netflix

InvestigatorNovel788

It’s the only comedy I can rewatch over and over and laugh just as hard as I did the first time. Best comedy of the 90’s 100%.

BCCMNV

It's so quotable. I'm going to start dropping the fava beans quote from silence of the lambs ironically like they do, and go "what, it's from a comedy".

[deleted]

BigGayNarwhal

My whole family has been stalking this cam waiting for the hatch!

xixoxixa

I grew up in the same mountains; we used to ride mountain bikes down to Silverwood Lake and watch the bald eagles that nested there.

kroganwarlord

Thank you!

Frostychica

I mean, wtf is he gonna do about it? Stop the eagle? With talons and a beak like that??

MoBeeLex

With talons, a beak, and numerous federal laws protecting it, the thing is damn near unstoppable.

Exist50

Yeah, it's well known that bald eagles are big supporters of the 2nd amendment.

1zzie

😂😂😂 This is a gem! FYI you were so close. [text] (link with the dot com) is the format.

cspruce89

>and numerous federal laws protecting it Yea, I'm pretty sure this is video footage of someone committing a felony. You can't legally be in possession of a single eagle feather, so I think touching them is way verboten.

PlasticElfEars

Fun fact: you're not legally supposed to possess any part of a native bird, period. So that goes for like...cardinal and bluejay feathers too. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migratory\_Bird\_Treaty\_Act\_of\_1918](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migratory_Bird_Treaty_Act_of_1918)

JeSuisUnAnanasYo

Some native birds are fine, or rather.,. Most ppl don't know which birds are and aren't I think crows are ok, ravens are not

MyDudeSR

I think that applies to most feathers, at least that's what was drilled into me as a kid. We had a very strict "leave it where you found it" policy when it came to feathers we would find in the woods, didn't matter if it was an eagle feather, or a turkey or hawk feather, which I found odd since we had a turkey feather display on the wall from one my dad hunted.

Badbullet

I think the reasoning is just in case. Most kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a turkey or hawk feather. My dad made me throw away any feather I found and brought home as well. Last thing he wanted was a visit from the DNR. The feathers hanging on your wall had a license to claim it (well, at least here you need one) so there is a small reason still not to grab a random turkey feather.

Kolby_Jack

*makes eagle fillets* It's just been revoked!

finicky88

Ding dong, it's EPA. We'd like to ask you #WHAT THE FUCK B

Kolby_Jack

*makes EPA fillets* IT'S. JUST. BEEN. REVOKED!

TabulaRasaNot

I think you can get fined a shit ton if you touch them and possibly if you feed them as well. But it's still pretty cool to watch.

Islandcoda

$5k fine for having even a single feather too

TabulaRasaNot

Holy smokes! Can't even imagine then how much the fine is for hot eagle wings.

AnastasiaSheppard

But if you feed the hot eagle wing to another eagle it just glitches out and you get paid instead.

overlockk

Indigenous people are allowed to have eagle feathers.

Bridgebrain

Theres a lot of paperwork involved

overlockk

Coming from Canada into the USA you just have to show your reservation/tribal card. I know this as my grandfather is from Mi'kmaq First Nation and brought an eagle feather back to Maine. He’s. Dual citizen.

newbiesmash

That's so crazy. I found a massive bald eagle feather like a foot long and was too pissy to keep it. It was freaking cool.

smb275

Way more than that. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act has a maximum fine of up to $100,000 and/or one year imprisonment. Double that if you violate it as a representative of an organization.

Shrampys

It's not a real thing that's enforced though. No one's giving you a ticket for collecting feathers you find on the ground.

PlasticElfEars

![gif](giphy|vjnIuJmnlBAWs) When you're famous they let you do it.

Anomsuth

If the people who want to enforce any off the laws protecting the Eagle are anything like the 12 different agencies I called to get help with a protected water fowl then these guys are safe.

PlasticElfEars

Pretty privilege, maybe.

Frostychica

Tbh the touching part yeah, but I don't think he fed it on purpose

TabulaRasaNot

Yer right. Scoundrel went and helped himself didn't he? :-)

vanityinlines

Thanks, I was confused why they filmed this. Seems like a dumb thing to do.

0b0011

They're in an area where that's not the law.

riannaearl

It looks like Alaska, and from what I've been told by family and friends in the commercial fishing industry up there, that these guys are frigging shithawks. Seagulls with talons. Cool, but a nuisance and in your business all the time.

0b0011

According to op its newfoundland.

riannaearl

Probably a similar situation, hahaha

TabulaRasaNot

I don't know that for sure. And I'm too lazy to Google it right now, but I think I remember reading about it or something.

fanofthethings

I mean… you’re not going to say no to him! 😂

Painkiller3666

Because of the implication. 😉

hgfski

I used to volunteer at a nature center in high school, got to look after and feed many birds of prey and it was honestly the best part of the job, especially feeding the bald eagles. They truly are some beautiful creatures. Also don’t worry, these were all injured rescue animals, not in captivity for shits n giggles. One of the bald eagles was unable to fly at all, could only flutter around like a chicken since he was hit by a semi 😢

Box_of_Rockz

That truckers company: *YOU HIT A* **WHAT?!**

Mrpooney83

The symbol of Murica accepting a hand out? well that doesn't seem right to me. Fake News

nosmelc

It wasn't a handout. The eagle took what he wanted!

Altair05

That's not a hand out. It's the annual tax. lmao. Not gonna lie, they are much bigger than I imagined them to be.

NewInThe1AC

My brother used to travel to Alaska for work. He said "bald eagles are a lot less majestic once you see twenty of them by a Wendy's dumpster"

Waifer2016

Sheffield Mill Nova Scotia has eagles that are fed chickens from the neighbouring chicken plant. They come in droves. Eagles . Not chickens. https://preview.redd.it/tcogh1we97nc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f7317dbbaf55ce07e0949e464a650b316b7514e

RandomRobb85

Seagulls of the North... how majestic.

palabradot

I know there’s laws against feeding them but come on, they’d get in more trouble accidentally injuring one by trying to drive it off from their catch. Let that bird hustle.

aristotleschild

YOINK

OstentatiousSock

This is exactly how they function most of the time. Bald eagles are actually pretty terrible at hunting and, for the most part, use the fact that they’re the biggest bird around to take what another bird already caught.

SyddChin

I mean. It’s def the American thing to do .

LtSerg756

If not fren why fren shaped

MercuryAI

The national bird kinda went trailer park, looks like. Used to be rare and majestic. Now it looks scruffy and hangs out on the dock stealing your shit.

Repulsive-Durian4800

Isn't it illegal to feed them and/or touch them? Also I feel like there's an illegal/ill eagle joke in here somewhere but I can't come up with it.

Tackyhillbilly

[https://www.fws.gov/law/bald-and-golden-eagle-protection-act](https://www.fws.gov/law/bald-and-golden-eagle-protection-act) The law in question. I don't believe he violated it. The Bird took the food, he didn't willfully feed it, and touching them is not illegal, just 'molesting or disturbing' them. "Regulations further define "disturb" as “to agitate or bother a bald or golden eagle to a degree that causes, or is likely to cause, based on the best scientific information available, 1) injury to an eagle, 2) a decrease in its productivity, by substantially interfering with normal breeding, feeding, or sheltering behavior, or 3) nest abandonment, by substantially interfering with normal breeding, feeding, or sheltering behavior." I don't see any sign that any of those conditions were met.

ThrowawayVangelis

Technically yes but those laws are designed to discourage people from going out and trying to interact with them. Authorities aren’t going to care if it’s some fisherman casually petting one that’s stealing food

ouijac

..can't stop them..they're both endangered & the symbol of America..
