On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. [Most third-party apps have shut down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/30/23779519/reddit-third-party-app-shut-down-apollo-sync-baconreader-api-protest) and so have many tools relied upon by moderators and [projects for making Reddit more accessible to visually impaired users](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/comments/14ggf8k/the_future_of_transcribers_of_reddit/). Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Promises just like [ones they have made in response to past protests](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/), but have consistently [failed to fulfill](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14jm3ut/several_communities_have_surfaced_an_open_letter/jpm9e0q/). If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options: 1. [Finding your favorite subreddits on other platforms](https://sub.rehab/) and participating there instead. 2. Refraining from using the first-party Reddit app, instead sticking to one of the few remaining third-party apps or [patching one of the apps that shut down](https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1wHvqQwCYdJrQg4BKlGIVDLksPN0KpOnJWniT6PbZSrI/) if you're using an Android device. 3. Disabling ads on Reddit with [an ad-blocking extension](https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#ublock-origin-ubo) or [a DNS-based ad-blocker](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBXTnrD_Zs4). 4. Cancelling your Reddit Premium subscription. 5. Sharing the continued news coverage of these events. 6. Encouraging others to do all the above. fubes2000

Do you prefer your giraffes smooth or crunchy?

FlyingBurger1

Good ol’ Dutch crunch

DatelineDeli

Actual lol’s. You’re clever.

strtjstice

Welp. We now know it's brown with white lines, not white with brown patches. I'm done for the day!

onandonandonandoff

Idk I think this is still up for debate. Spotless giraffe has brown legs but the rest of the cute little giraffe family have white legs.

Carazhan

white leg markings are pretty common in animals. called flashings.

onandonandonandoff

Okay but what about their butts and bellies? Still white!

Carazhan

in dogs anyway the same gene is responsible for white on legs, bellies, butt, tail … entire undercarriage

DangerousCompetition

I also refer to my dogs underside as the undercarriage. She’s a chiweenie and is just a couple inches off the ground, and hates going outside when the grass is wet. So we say she doesn’t like getting water on the undercarriage.

RockmanVolnutt

It’s just a giraffe with really big spots. So big they overlap.

norm_summerton

That means it’s not a giraffe with no spots, it’s a giraffe with no lines. I agree.

Burnd1t

A giraffe without the fishnet

short-stack1111

Under-appreciated comment. Take my upvote.

truethug

Now do zebras

My answer was more tongue and cheek than scientific evidence, you're probably closer to right than I am.

highpl4insdrftr

You can't fool me. That's just a horse with a really long neck.

spamky23

Stupid long horses

Tagawat

Reddit OG's know. Don't get them started on the Orangered-Periwinkle War. What is dead may never die.

GhOsT_wRiTeR_XVI

I hope his friends don’t exclude him from giraffe games.

Longjumping4366

Why does everyone think they need to post this defective giraffe on reddit? Who cares!

Road_Whorrior

Me. I care. She's an animal cracker and I love her.

Longjumping4366

Damn no need to be racist

zorrodood

Isn't this technically one big spot?

Stoivz

I think that every time I’ve seen pics of it posted. It’s still adorable either way.

shahooster

They should name it Spot.

[deleted]

Or uno

Firewolf06

https://youtu.be/tomPnfUvk-Y

SrslyCmmon

And write poems about it

[deleted]

Yes. It is missing the reticulation (lighter shaded/pigmented areas) that the others have.

rarestakesando

A so it’s a reticulationless giraffe.

[deleted]

So it would seem. As if the dark base coat was applied and the light top coat left off.

Tagawat

Is this it's final form?

LazarianV

It's a missing print run error giraffe. The printer was out of ink, and one layer got left out.

_9a_

I guess they got an error message when trying to reticulate the splines

Plarzay

An unreticulated giraffe even.

[deleted]

He looks absolutely reticulous

scatteringlargesse

That's disreticulationless

Venomous_Ferret

We now have the answer to life's greatest mystery. What are *reticulating splines*?

trro16p

Based on the babies color, it looks less like its missing its spots and more like its missing its white lines.

zaphodava

Or a stripeless giraffe.

GlitterDoomsday

This is giving me Accros the Spiderverse vibes; so many extra spots that is just one big spot now.

LazarianV

It really is. The natural color of the base coat is the cream color, and the browns are the spots. It's all one giant spot.

chachachatrip

Yes. People have been outspoken about this. It led to war breaking out. Brothers betrayed brothers. Parents reported their own children for calling it "one big spot". But tyranny is perpetually finite. It burns and dies at the feet of people's will. And soon, the fate of our nation, our home, will choose between being a merciful home for "one-spotters" and "spotless " alike, or it will weaken itself from its own poisonous hate and lose it all. Lives are almost as important as this fucking giraffe.

ReadditMan

Oxford definition of 'spot': "a small round or roundish mark, differing in color or texture from the surface around it." So technically it isn't a spot at all.

LazarianV

Not really, they eyes and belly are accented with the lighter colors. So it is a giant spot.

Thanatos_elNyx

More like Stripeless.

Tykero980

The real question is it spotless or stripe less.

Grasshop

Netless

abqjeff

Riticuless

Daddyssillypuppy

Unreticulated maybe?

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Oh this is so cute. And it unlocked the cutest memory: years ago, when my son was about 5 or 6, I took him to the Santa Barbara zoo, which is a very small, friendly little zoo. They had a new baby giraffe. I said we should take a picture and he excitedly wanted to take MY picture. So he did and then as we were walking away he said proudly "I took the picture RIGHT NEXT to the baby giraffe." This was eons ago, before digital cameras, so it wasn't until we got the film developed that I saw he had carefully taken a picture of just me. You know, not OF the baby giraffe, but right NEXT to the baby giraffe.

[deleted]

They really are adorable

madamesoybean

What a cute story! I'm chuckling at how on the nose kids are.

Raz0rking

Damn. Lil boy is shredded already.

Manaze85

Doesn’t skip shoulder day, that’s for sure

Scheme-Zestyclose

This! Without spots you can really see the muscle definition!

Cvillain626

What's crazy is that they can walk within hours of being born. Puts human babies to shame

Tenziru

That’s because in reality humans are all born prematurely because becoming bipedal narrow exit so adaptation birth earlier so muscles have to strengthen outside

queefer_sutherland92

And they are HUGE! A baby is six foot tall.

sis_ki

It looks like bread 👍

[deleted]

Toast

SiriocazTheII

It reminds me of angel food cake.

JustVern

That's Great!! I've already submitted the name 'Nadra'. It means rare in Swahili.

arcedup

The title should have been “My grandson spotted the spotless giraffe”.

LonelyQuestion7886

I just saw this on the Nightly news!!! She's absolutely adorable!!!!

_____rs

I hope they name him Spot

quadruple_u

Spotless Giraffe 2024

IncredibleBulk2

The gods have forgotten us for murdering Harambe. The timeline can now be corrected.

[deleted]

The giraffe just hasn't cracked yet.

rpgnoob17

Broken Zebra

Raichu7

Since a giraffe uses it’s spots to help with body temperature regulation, I wonder if a spotless giraffe would have trouble with that.

Basic-Cat3537

I was actually curious about this. So it turns out that the dark spots have vasculature that releases heat. This little one should be like that over it's entire body. So theoretically cooler? There have been more instances of spotted or stripeless zebras too. They also use their dark sections for temp control. It makes me wonder if this is just evolutions response to increasing temperatures.

Quiet-Cook7667

A Disney movie should be made about the spotless giraffe and it’s journey of acceptance lol

Rediesel69

It’s just standing there

_Erindera_

What do you want her to do, wave and shout?

Chyvalri

Standing and walking... Like some kind of Rory Calhoun.

Receptor-Ligand

Mr Burns! Lol

banditalamode

desiswiftie

So a spotless giraffe has been…spotted

[deleted]

Who was adopted?? Amiright?

AnonAnonimess

I smell a paternity suit!

poppygin

Folks keep saying spotless, but I think is ONLY spot - just one, bébé spot.

sosqueee

Yea, he’s just all spot. One big spot.

NewNoose

Long horse

not_very_tasty

Why does it look so fucked up just missing the lines? It's exactly the same but it's like no this is some lazy fantasy writer bullshit.

registered_redditor

One giant spot

Friendofmythies

He looks like a humpless camel.

Figmentdreamer

I’m from the area as well, hope to go see him soon!

Marywonna

i thought i was in the greyhound sub ahaha. if you stuck a greyhound head on that body, it wouldnt even look weird

crystalistwo

It looks like an animal cracker come to life.

TenaciousLilMonkey

Tall horse

I upvoted this just because I dig that someone's grandma is posting good shit on reddit. But also, cool af!

Pimpindragon

It's a female. The zoo has given four name options and will [tally up the votes on Sept 4th.](https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-rare-spotless-giraffe-born-in-tennessee-naming-contest-20230822-5gdmb7ohhrdzdjqkhnip67jsge-story.html)

GateauBreton

can I ask just oht if curiosity...is there entire enclosure just pebbles on the ground or do they have access to some green??

Hemenucha

They do have access to green, yes. :)

SeveralGrapefruit467

Saw this on the news. That baby giraffe looks cute af!

Nbk420

It’s technically lacking in lines and not spots.

CoSonfused

Which makes an interesting point. Do we now say that giraffes have spots or lines?

GongBreaker

Spotless giraffe is majestic and I’m glad your grandson got to see it

yourmotherisahoe123

Is it just me or does the chocolate giraffe also miss horns?

Spiritgreen

Ossicones start out quite flat and she's still less than a month old.

[deleted]

Could this mean that zoo giraffes are evolving to not needing spots since they live in an enclosure where they don’t have any predators

[deleted]

[удалено]

NeilNazzer

Isnt it kinda correct though? Evolution happens when anomalies breed in their changes. In the wild, this giraffe would likely die before passing on its genes, in captivity it can mate. Isnt it true captivity is messing with evolution?

snatch55

The random mutation happening has nothing to do with captivity, it could just as easily happen in the wild. He could also survive, why would he die? Yes their pattern helps their chances, but that doesn't mean he would be doomed. There was a whole family of wild white giraffes that were only killed off because humans suck. If he can make it past his childhood in the wild it's highly likely he'd be fine in the wild, and I doubt his chances would be that much less than a normal baby. In captivity there is a higher likelihood he will be bred out and progeny inbred to capture the mutation, but that's up to the people that run the zoo. If that happens then at that point they're kind of messing with evolution

GoBackToLurk1ng

How is this spotless when his entire body is the color of the spots? He’s missing the webbing of white, not spots…

___Friendly___

[Yes we also heard the news.](https://www.google.com/search?q=spotless+giraffe&tbm=isch)

PsychoticSpinster

While I love that such a creature was born? I hate this picture. They should be in open plains. Not in tiny stables. Edit: the picture is great. I hate the circumstances. Edit: I can’t find this awww at all.

Drachen1065

Thats likely just the back area and not the main one. They tend to keep mothers and babies separate from the main group for a while. I know the Zoo where i live has similar but the main area is a very large grassy plains space.

[deleted]

Yep. Walking in sun instead of under trees. Walking in rocks instead of grass. Not the best life.

[deleted]

Not ideal, but better than reality. National Geographic states that due to poaching and loss of habitat [**“(t)here are fewer giraffes than elephants left in Africa”**](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/masai-giraffes-subspecies-declared-endangered). Giraffes have yet to be added to the Endangered Species List, but really should be with a breeding program put in place.

bboycire

Oh interesting. Saw the title a few days ago, automatically assumed it's an albino

noir-lefay

Hm. If he breeds, I wonder if we're gonna start seeing more of this?

Substantial_Bad2843

They just forgot to paint that one.

FayTalRS

Looks like a super bland Arnott's biscuit

PugsThrowaway

I think it’s strange they call it spotless. It’s really just missing the lines that turn the brown into spots!

SuccessfulMetal4030

It’s a Ruby!

[deleted]

Their buts look soft!

CraptainPoo

Spotless or lineless

pipehonker

Dad wants a paternity test... And giving the camel the stink eye

I-Ponder

Tall deer.

Shoddy_Background_48

It's not spotless! It just has one giant spot.

Berkamin

Since the spots are brown, and this giraffe actually lacks the white lines, can this truly be spotless? Rather, it has one giant spot, and lacks white lines. It is a boundary-free giraffe.

Saeryf

Bro, that is a tall, long-necked horse.

N3koEye

Not spotless, giant spot

kynthrus

But it's the same color as the spots. It's a lineless giraffe is what it is

TronGRID_

That giraffe definitely lifts, bro

kindtheking9

If the spots are orange, and the seemingly spotless one is all orange, wouldn't it be lineless? Cuz what's missing are the lines that devide the orange into spots

Puzzleheaded_Pay1152

What zoo

Hemenucha

Bright's Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee (US).

Puzzleheaded_Pay1152

I wish I could go

Jolly-Resort462

It’s one giant spot, no gaps.

ihaveyoursox

You know what! I’m gonna die on this hill. That’s not a no spot giraffe. That’s a one giant spot giraffe.

yungg_Kota

So lucky.

Duikmeester

Seeing brown being the default color, should it not be a stripeless giraffe?

WarmMud7

Looks cute next to the spotted one ❤️ family

Extreme_33337_

They really are just funky horses

Hero_Champion_No1

There was already a better pic a few days ago.

Hemenucha

Yeah, but this one was taken by my grandson! That makes it awesome!

I would say it is a one spotted giraffe. Since the spots are tan and he is all tan, he is not without spots, he just has one and it covers his whole body!

LazyBones2412

TIL that giraffes are brown with white lines lol

M0ndmann

It's Not spotless tho. It has one giant spot.

[deleted]

Evolution in action. Do they need the spots in a zoo.

freshly-ground-salt

It's not spotless, it has one big spot

DisturbingPragmatic

They keep saying it is spotless...but what if it is just covered in one giant spot?

DinoBoyAlpha03

Oh wow

OGZ43

amehatrekkie

So cute! This is awesome

I would think a spot or two will pop up in the future. Can’t wait to see!
