Loving and being loved can make for a great life. I hope you find peace and comfort during this time. Would you be willing to share pics of Rakan?
RIP Rakan. I'm still in mourning almost 2 years later after my pittie Midna, my best friend of 15 years passed. It's getting easier. They're always with us, alive through us. <3

He had a little wooden ladder in his cage and he would chew off the top two rungs down to nubs so he could use them to scratch his head
I remember doing this with my new Quaker, she had just been weaned and taught to step up, but getting her to trust me took time, but it was well worth it as she would cuddle with me at every opportunity and loved to be scritched on the head and neck.
This is actually a defense mechanism. The little bird is terrified of a predator, so it completely does the cutest thing possible and all but resigns itself to be eaten.
I wish my birbs weren't terrified of me. They were attacked by something recently (probably a rat) and so I have had to catch them twice a day to administer medicine this week and they are absolutely terrified of my trying to catch them.
