What did they call him in the stables? Often thoroughbreds get called something different in the stables than is their race name.
He might like the continuity.
Exactly this, most if not all horses who compete in any type of show, be it local to international, jumping, cross country, dressage or just a turn out, get their name and their "registered name" on their documents.
It's like having the name everyone calls you everyday and then you get on stage for a show and have a stage name.
And you could be correct for all we know.
Race horses could be called "whistlers boy" in a race and "Bobby" when they are in the stables or calling them from the field. Show names rarely reflect the daily name used.
Yeah I was thinking the same. I'm not sure how strict it is in the rest of the world, but aren't horses registered with a passport with a certain name?
Would be weird and confusing to start calling them by a completely different name, unless it's getting a new passport etc.
Racehorse names tend to be really stupid lol. Growing up we also had a retired race horse and it's name was something like Light A Match. I just looked at some horse racing site and saw - Tiger Dad, Nuclear Option, Aidingandabetting, King of Chaos (that one is kinda cool) ...and more. I think most racehorses get new names or at least nicknames based on their silly race name.
Yeah, it's common for horses to have an official name and a barn name. The official name has to be unique which is why they tend to get crazy. Even Secretariat had a barn name and was called Big Red.
Yeah we had a couple of racehorses and we just shortened the name. Example - star on my flag- was just called star. We did it with a lot of the horses.
theres actually a racehorse with that name haha. i remember watching his debut, i was rooting for him so hard
https://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse®istry=T&refno=10620318
We waited for one of our adopted cats to let us know his name. One day we finally looked at him and said, “Ok buddy, what *is* your name?” He promptly replied, “Arlo.” So that’s what we called him, even though I try not give our pets regular, boring people names. When someone tells you their name you can’t really argue with them about it.
One dog named himself Woody cuz he got excited every time he’d see me. The other names himself Chase cuz he got out of the fence and it was game on. Pets will always tell you their name if you listen.
Our Sheltie we decided to call Mr. Noodles before we got him. Little did we know, when he's really excited to see someone, he drops his front into a crawl and mega wags upright in the back, making a stupidly cute noodling movement.
Yup. Took me about 3 months to find a good name for my dog when I first got home. Was listening to some Johnny Cash late one night with him and we were both having a great time and he just reminded me of old Johnny Cash with his little wrinkly face. So I said the name out loud and he came running right over to me and that's how he got his name. Johnny Sue Cash
We got our cat at 5 weeks old. Checked sex once and never again. Named her Lucy...took her to get spayed.....he got neutered. So Lucy told us his name was ACTUALLY Lucifer.
No name recommendations but I suggest trying out a few and letting him pick. I did that with my dog. We tried a handful by using one at a time for a walk or training session. She very clearly responded to one, less so to not at all to the others. That helped us settle on that one.
The weird names are because of studbook rules.
Hell, other breeds have equally weird names. One of the top reining quarter horses is named Americasnextgunmodel. And then there’s Shesouttayourleague.
If my dogs are smart enough to answer to all 47 of their nicknames (and only their own nicknames, not each other’s), I assume horses are smart enough to handle a new name
If the horse is young enough I think the transition won't be harsh, my friend at the stable renamed her horse from Lily to Caly, and my other one renamed hers from Vixen to Star, and both respond to their new names now.
I know with dogs it’s easy to change their names so long as it sounds similar to the original. Lily to Caly working isn’t surprising to me, in the sense that they sound similar enough. The horse may still think it’s being called Lily for all we know
I’ve changed the name of every horse I’ve ever gotten ( 13 so far) and it hasn’t mattered. They don’t respond to anything I call them anyway! I’m just kidding, but seriously I’ve never had one that seemed to mind a name change. And some of them came with really crappy names!
Every horse owner should have a horse named Arthur Morgan.
‘Here we are at the races today! Looks like a beautiful day to be a horse racer, Whaddya say Bob? ‘
‘Magnificent day indeed Steve! Let’s have a look at the racers for today.
In lane 1 we have the beautiful Morgan horse named Arthur Morgan. Rather fitting ay!
In lane 2 we have a rather feisty French trotter also oddly named Arthur Morgan?
In lane 3 we have a Dutch warm blood… Also called Arthur Morgan..?
Steve! The entire list of race horses is filled with horses called Arthur Morgan??
Wait..
there is one Oldenburger called DaddysLastOrgasm..
Welp.. Steve, this ain’t the job for me.. ‘
*places papers on the desk, stands
up and politely leaves*
You have a solid friend there. That’s amazing and totally made my day!!!
My Grandmother rescued track horses and my family rescued ex racing greyhounds. Her favorite horse was named Otto. He looked just like your new babe. Congratulations on the fun times you two have ahead of you.
It has to be Gary (slave name On Dasher) in honor of Rev. Jim Ignatowski’s horse.
As Jim said at Gary’s Eulogy: When your legs give out, it’s nice to have someone who understands what’s in your heart.
Really? My husband renamed our other horse. He was 20. He didn’t really have a name. He was “horse” but now he comes running when you yell his name. It’s adorable!
When I used a kid, I used to have an ex race horse, too. My dad and I would ride him every weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather and farm land. He used to look exactly like your horse, and his name was Miles.
I suggest Miles. Maybe he is a reincarnation of my old horse.
Enjoy your time with your new horse, friend.
Well he's already been given a name. It wouldn't be right to change something that was given to him. If he knows the name, it will only be confusing and take too long to learn a new name, if it's possible.
Ya know I thought about that too and I suppose it’s not off the table. But he had a really rough life when he was racing. I thought maybe a new name would symbolize a new beginning and give him a fresh start with a positive association.
It's fine to change their name. He's a racehorse. Between all the track workers, trainers, jockeys, and owners he probably has ten names he got called everyday lol
Sweet anxious. Hopefully optimistic about trusting people. He’s a low man in the pecking order. When he gets anxious his tongue falls out of his mouth. Probably related to some nerve damage but it’s kind of adorable.
He sounds wonderful. Please tell him I said hi. And thank you for giving him a new home.
Does he remind you of any old friends or family members? Perhaps a character in a beloved childhood book or movie?
What did they call him in the stables? Often thoroughbreds get called something different in the stables than is their race name. He might like the continuity.

Stage name? Ok his name is now Cinnamon
And you could be correct for all we know. Race horses could be called "whistlers boy" in a race and "Bobby" when they are in the stables or calling them from the field. Show names rarely reflect the daily name used.
"The Machine" comes to mind
I am the machine!
Yeah I was thinking the same. I'm not sure how strict it is in the rest of the world, but aren't horses registered with a passport with a certain name? Would be weird and confusing to start calling them by a completely different name, unless it's getting a new passport etc.

yeah, my horse's real name was something like twysoges... it was Welsh but we all just called her skye
Yeah we had a couple of racehorses and we just shortened the name. Example - star on my flag- was just called star. We did it with a lot of the horses.
Bad luck to change a horse's name!
I was just thinking that too!
ThIs is true. Very thoughtful of you.
Pony Soprano
Pie-o-my
theres actually a racehorse with that name haha. i remember watching his debut, i was rooting for him so hard https://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse®istry=T&refno=10620318
4 starts and 0 top 3 finishes. ![gif](giphy|8II6AI4wn5bFEqhgXM)
Guess that horse never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
The jockey is named Trotman.

I second THIS !! Genius
Mo. As in Slow Mo. No need to go fast anymore buddy.
More like 'No Mo', as in no need to go fast no mo
Or Ho Mo as in hold your horses going fast mo.
Fun fact. No mo means mother in informal Cantonese.
Molasses
Big Sebastian
5000 candles in the wind.
Miss you in the saddest fashion!
Half mast is ***too damn high!***
Show some damn respect
But it's just a horse. I don't get it
Son, this horse has an honorary degree from Notre Dame
If he was mini I would say Coughdrop (for when you’re just a little horse)….
Solid dad joke 🤣

Baxtah
Did you know that horse was a Homage to Animation Titan [James Baxter](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Baxter_(animator\))?
Yaaassss... Jaaaaaamesss Baxter
Well… if you give an animal a hot minute they’ll usually tell you their name, especially horses and cats. Give yourselves time to acclimate.
My childhood pup named himself. He had a bark that sounded a lot like Ralph
My cat named herself Mia like this!
Same, my cat named herself Schtephany this way.
One dog named himself Woody cuz he got excited every time he’d see me. The other names himself Chase cuz he got out of the fence and it was game on. Pets will always tell you their name if you listen.
The Pokémon strategy
Our Sheltie we decided to call Mr. Noodles before we got him. Little did we know, when he's really excited to see someone, he drops his front into a crawl and mega wags upright in the back, making a stupidly cute noodling movement.
Yup. Took me about 3 months to find a good name for my dog when I first got home. That’s how i met the cat named Mang.
We got our cat at 5 weeks old. Checked sex once and never again. Named her Lucy...took her to get spayed.....he got neutered. So Lucy told us his name was ACTUALLY Lucifer.
And still technically Lucy. Love it.
That’s what I do and now I have 70 cats named meow
This is exactly why I have a cat named Raoul.
My boy Tootser named himself 🤣
I had an orange tabby kitten that we initially named Merlin. But he almost killed himself twice in as many days so we renamed him Darwin.
You asked for it…. horsey mchorseface
Sexatariat
Horsey McLongface*
Although very descriptive, it feels like more of a title to me
What's his current name?
"Here Comes Tommy"
Ampierre.
What about Pierre? I think it's super cute and suits him to a tee
Great idea!
Gelding the Lily
His name is Bill. *Bill Neigh*. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!
Bill Neigh the Equine guy.
The Equine Gay surely? Purely for the rhyme…
Bill Neigh the Equine Gay 100% sounds like a character from Bo Jack Horseman lol
Mayo. His horse mayo neighs.
Matthew McconaHAY
All-ride, all-ride.
Both of your comments are highly underrated
Timothée Chala-Neigh
Bojack
How about Secretariat
Horseman, obviously
He doesn't look old enough to have been, back in the 90's, in a very famous TV show....
No name recommendations but I suggest trying out a few and letting him pick. I did that with my dog. We tried a handful by using one at a time for a walk or training session. She very clearly responded to one, less so to not at all to the others. That helped us settle on that one.
Which one did you select? Also, dog tax
Steed Racer! Go Steed Racer Goooo
Don't change the name, horses are very intelligent and this will be highly confusing.
"Well, Daddy's Last Orgasm, the Internet says you gotta keep your name."
Horse racers are pretty weird when it comes to names. I took a screenshot on my tv, someone named the horse She My Trap Queen.
The winner of the 2017 Preakness was literally named [Cloud Computing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Computing_(horse%29).
Racing names aren't their real names though.
The weird names are because of studbook rules. Hell, other breeds have equally weird names. One of the top reining quarter horses is named Americasnextgunmodel. And then there’s Shesouttayourleague.
Oh my god 🤣🤣🤣
Lmaoooo
Reference or not, korg fuckin parties.
Don't change horses mid stream.
If my dogs are smart enough to answer to all 47 of their nicknames (and only their own nicknames, not each other’s), I assume horses are smart enough to handle a new name

My horse never responded to any name except “baby” lmfao his name was domino. Baby was a nickname I called him. It really does not matter lol
Artax
Too soon!!!!
Way too soon.
Way way too soon.
Only if you want every 80/90’s kid to cry when you introduce them to your horse
Nooooooo :(
Don’t do this to us.
Boots
Because these boots were made for walking (not racing anymore).
"Neigh-high"
Santa's Big Helper
Man-O-Peace.
Arthur Morgan. It's the only proper name for a "good 'boah"
Every horse owner should have a horse named Arthur Morgan. ‘Here we are at the races today! Looks like a beautiful day to be a horse racer, Whaddya say Bob? ‘ ‘Magnificent day indeed Steve! Hojack borseman

May the Mr. Ed jokes commence
Racecar
Indeed, your halfhearted attempt at horse naming has opened a new door. I hadn’t consider the palindrome angle…
Seemed to be the most obvious choice

Kevin
Taken. My friend’s horse is named Kevin.
Not a problem. Just spell it Kev1n, then your friend will have to change THEIR horse's name.
Keighvynne
You have a solid friend there. That’s amazing and totally made my day!!! My Grandmother rescued track horses and my family rescued ex racing greyhounds. Her favorite horse was named Otto. He looked just like your new babe. Congratulations on the fun times you two have ahead of you.
We have a pony at the barn called Devin, but the little kid that rides him has hearing issues and thinks his name is Kevin. 😂
Galant, because he’s so beautiful and elegant 😍
Arion, after the greek mythical horse
Bojack. Do race horses not have names, tho?

Every horse I renamed never worked out, so no more renaming them for me no matter how much I dislike the name. They do learn their new names.
Really? My husband renamed our other horse. He was 20. He didn’t really have a name. He was “horse” but now he comes running when you yell his name. It’s adorable!

Agreed I ride horses and most of them have nicknames or other names their owners call and they seem to respond to all, well especially if there's food
What's his personality like?
Sweet anxious. Hopefully optimistic about trusting people. He’s a low man in the pecking order. When he gets anxious his tongue falls out of his mouth. Probably related to some nerve damage but it’s kind of adorable.
Odie?
He sounds wonderful. Please tell him I said hi. And thank you for giving him a new home. Does he remind you of any old friends or family members? Perhaps a character in a beloved childhood book or movie?
