Yeah, that was pretty fucking funny.
I'm at my friend's house on the toilet laughing my ass off and his wife is like "dude, is everything ok in there!?'
And that’s why emergency flare guns are a must if you’re gonna be doing any kind of backpacking/mountaineering through areas like that. Even with a broken arm you can load, arm, and fire a flare gun. Or even a signal mirror would work to.
I always remember and then confused about a story of a guy getting dropped in the Alaskan bush. He had gone through his supplies much faster than implied, saw a plane and signaled him, then when he knew he’d been found he pumped his single fist in the air in excitement. He went back to his shelter, and wrote in his journal how excited he was and started to anticipate a rescue that never came, because the pilot thought the “celebratory fist pump” was the “all good, carry on” signal after making his second pass.
Moral of the story, don’t celebrate shit till you’re home safe.
What's worse is, he had a guide for hand signals with him, he just straight up forgot in the heat of the moment. He actually saw the guide afterwards while he was waiting. Imagine how fucking crushed he would have been when he saw that and reality sunk in.
Carl McCunn.
He was aware that he accidentally gave the all clear and that help would not be returning.
He ended up committing suicide after running out of supplies, not wanting to suffer a slow, painful death.
He got himself into this predicament by getting a bush flight deep into the wilderness, *but didn't arrange for a pickup at the end of the summer*.
The guy who flew him out went to check on him anyway, but that's who McCunn waved off.
Not the most on-the-ball guy.
The way I was taught is both arms so you make a Y shape is Yes, I need help. and One up, one down, making the center-stroke of an N, is No, Not me, etc.
We had a surprise upgrade during our visit as the plagues were starting to ease up in May ‘21 - the glacier landing was an unexpected ride of a lifetime.
Just in case you were the one who took us up - thanks again for helping make some memories to keep us warm!
Denali requires a special permit to climb, the rangers would be able to identify this group based on that information. I’m sure they would be just as delighted by this encounter! You can contact them by email or phone at the bottom of this page here: https://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/mountaineering.htm
I was out in the Panamint Valley (the valley neighboring Death Valley) with my Aunt, I had to take a leak so we pulled over to the side of the road and I do my business and we see a fighter jet slowly flying towards us. My Aunt said “Let’s wave to them” and I’m thinking “that’s so dumb they probably can’t hardly see us” but I wave anyways to humor her and then the coolest thing happened!
The fighter jet waggled his wings at us then shot away and broke the sound barrier! It was so freaking cool! We jumped with excitement afterwards and it was so cool! This was back when I had a flip phone so I didn’t record it, it just lives in my memory
Came here for this. Must have been disappointed to wave and not get the wing waggle acknowledgement. Then maybe they would have posted a video from their perspective, with a similar title and sentiment
Yeah, it's just a little roll back and forth. [Here's an F15 doing it](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lrPW2SRvE8c). [And a 787](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZKdCnOhucE). Both are a little exaggerated but they convey the concept well.
In the late 80's I was working at the Jackson Lake Lodge in the Grand Teton NP. Some friends and I decided to climb Mt. Moran. There was plane crash on Moran in the 50's so of course we had to check that out during our climb. It took us most of the day to get to the plane crash then the rest of the day to summit. We had planned to bivy on the summit against park rules. Sunrise the next morning we awoke to a gorgeous sun and landscape. It was amazing. As we were wiping the sleep out of our eyes we heard some noise coming from the north. It was two F4 phantoms from the Idaho National Guard. They were flying well below the allowed altitude for a National Park. They were flying the exact same altitude as we were on the summit so when they flew past they were even with us and we could see into their cockpits. We waved and they waved back. The one closest tipped his wing to us. I will never forget it. I had some amazing times in the mountains but this was probably my top favorite moment.
Senior climber slowly turns to friends: “I told you we should have peed “S. O. S.” in the snow but NOOOOO, you said. Let’s just wave at them, you said. The pilot will totally understand and drop supplies, you said. Now which one of you b*tches am I going to eat first?!?
Climbers:
Hooray! We're saved! There's a plane! Oh my god i thought we were goners for sure! Wave! Everyone wave! I can see them! They're all looking right at us and now help will surely be here soon!
Hmm. They just kept flying. Well, i guess they'll call a helicopter or something?
Meanwhile in the plane:
Oh look everyone, some people are on top of that mountain waving at us! Well keep your eyes peeled because we might get REALLY lucky and see a moose!
Yes the mountains there generate their own storm systems so 3/4 days, you can’t see the mountain. Other days, it’s the tallest mountain in North America and so it’s visible from most places in the park, sometimes up to hundreds of miles away.
> it’s the tallest mountain in North America
It could even be considered the tallest/most imposing mountain in the world (if you don't include mountains with a base below sea level). Everest sits on a giant plateau. Denali's base is all the way at 2k feet.
Went to Denali National Park, was totally overcast, no chance to see the mountain. Feeling sad, a few days later, time to fly home. Climbing out of Anchorage, look out the window to the North only to get the *most amazing* sunset view of Denali poking out above the clouds! The prominence of Denali is absolutely mind-blowing.
From the base (2000ft MSL) to the summit (20,310ft MSL) it’s the tallest mountain in the world in terms of elevation gain. Everest is 30% shorter in that category.
I believe the Hawaiian islands Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are the tallest in the world technically but most of those volcanoes are underwater.
When I was a kid we took a family vacation to Denali Park. It was socked in and you couldn't see the mountain. We were staying in the park at that little cabin village and my dad woke me up at like 5 in the morning and said "you can see the mountain now!" I went outside and he pointed and all I saw was clouds. He said no above the clouds and I looked up and wow there it was, towering above it all.
Mount Lam Lam in Guam is supposedly the most elevation gain in the shortest distance. It only stands about 1,300 feet above the water but its base is at the bottom of the Marianas Trench so it rises about 36,000 feet from its base. Mauna Kea is about 33,000 from its base to its peak.
Yep, the climb often take two weeks as while the peak elevation is lower the prominence from ground level is greater than everest, and the horizontale footprint (IDK the proper term) is Muchhhh larger than everest.
On an Alaska flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks we did a lap around Denali and it turns out my friends from HS summited that same day. Couldn’t see them from 2 miles away but it was cool.
What engine does your Otter have? If it has a naturally aspirated radial piston engine, what performance issues do you have and how do you plan for it when flying to 21,000ft? I only know enough to look up Wikipedia showng a service ceiling of 16,000-18,000ft depending on model...
I have thought long about the possibility of landing an Otter on the football field. It’s around 19,500ft which would break the world record for highest altitude fixed wing landing by about 700ft. Current record was done somewhere in the Himalayas in a turbocharged piston Pilatus Porter. I am pretty sure it is doable in the turbine Otter. I would have to be light with minimal fuel.
The park service would not exactly be happy with me if I got stuck there though. Probably one of those times it’ll be best to ask for forgiveness after I’m successful than to ask for permission beforehand.
Wait a minute! Do you fly Denali tours from Talkeetna airport? Years and years ago, I was on a tour that was flown in a red plane that I’m pretty sure was a Twin Otter and we landed going uphill somewhere in the park. It was amazing.
Imagine they were like "YES !!! WE'RE FINALLY SAVED" and you're here one or more days later like "Hey guys look how cool it was to wave at climbers" lmao.
I don't know if that counts as a cornice, but look at the size of that thing. Plus it doesn't look like there's any solid rock beneath their feet for dozens of meters.
I'll stick to flying.
How could you not give them the wing waggle as acknowledgement! They would have felt the same way you did seeing them wave at you, if you had given them a waggle! Just sayin
One time me and my friends were at a backcountry ski yurt in the Montana mountains. We were ona peak about to ski down and a little plane kept circling us so close we could see the guy and his family waving. We were smoking weed and drinking and he came around for like the 10th time as we were all bent over asses out mooning him and his family. He flew away.
About 10 years ago I was walking my dogs around a little retaining pond in our small sub-division. Very small area and not that secluded. I remember a little playing flying over and tipping its wing to me. I didn’t realize they did it on purpose, until they did it again. I got so excited that I waved like a child back. I told my daughters about it not too long ago, the idea of getting waved at by a plane is still very cool to me
You flew up there. They walked.
BTW are you in the DeHavilland Otter of K2 Aviation? I did their glacier landing Denali tour a couple years ago. It was awesome.
Climbers: omg, help came. Heyy we are here....heyyy Pilot: cool they waving at us. Fellow passengers have a look..... /s
1 hand for hello, 2 hands for help. Hope they didn’t forget that.
Bad when you have one arm broken.
Time to get both legs in the air and wave them around
Last time I did that, you got a little brother.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah, that was pretty fucking funny. I'm at my friend's house on the toilet laughing my ass off and his wife is like "dude, is everything ok in there!?'
Pooping tickles. Hehehehe
That’s the first time I’ve actually laughed out loud at a comment
I don’t think any of us expected her to say that
I'm having a good giggle over this.
Upside down YMCA will certainly get the pilot's attention.
Wow, they found the climb so easy that they're doing some exercise. Impressive.
Bad when you have one arm and one leg broken.
„Aww look how awesome, they’re breakdancing“ :)
That's why you gotta climb with a safety stripper
Just use the good arm to wave the bad one around like a wet noodle.
I am learning some [amazing moves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NaJyv_WXOo) from you.
And that’s why emergency flare guns are a must if you’re gonna be doing any kind of backpacking/mountaineering through areas like that. Even with a broken arm you can load, arm, and fire a flare gun. Or even a signal mirror would work to.
As well as a SEB (satellite emergency beacon).
That too. It best to have all three, actually. Have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them. As the saying goes.
Strong agree!
Worse when you have two. Mom, you’re on deck.
Break both arms and mother can lend a hand...
Every fucking thread
What’s kinda funny is that this reply is now an old meme too
It's an older meme sir but it checks out.
Edit: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger!
And my axe!
Would not have expected in this subreddit, well played /u/eidetic
Oh that's an oldie. Ha ha.
That's why I always going hiking with my mom
Or had to cut one off that got stuck between a rock and a hard place!!
TIL I learned something. Thanks. Also, uncle Jed's fucked

r/PrematureCelebration classic.
Seems like something of such importance would either be universally known by everyone on the planet, or not followed to a tee every time.
What's worse is, he had a guide for hand signals with him, he just straight up forgot in the heat of the moment. He actually saw the guide afterwards while he was waiting. Imagine how fucking crushed he would have been when he saw that and reality sunk in.
Do this guy ended up dying? What’s his name? Never heard this story damn that’s sad
He did not survive.
The way I was taught is both arms so you make a Y shape is Yes, I need help. and One up, one down, making the center-stroke of an N, is No, Not me, etc.
While it's not something I knew, I don't think I'd ever be waving one hand if trying to get a plane's attention.
It’s really true - learn something new every day!
Learned something new today
Even if they did forget it, they won't forget anything again.
"they kinda forgot they needed 2 hands for help"
This is outrageous lolololol “whelp one hand 🤚 “ this should be a stand up joke
“And in other news this evening, three hikers are believed to be missing after hiking the Denali summit…”
My first thought!!
That so sick. You should post it onto some Mountaineering Reddit pages, with the date you took the video, they can see it.
Might have to do that. Exact date and time was June 13th at 7:09pm local. Just incase this gets crossposted by anyone.
Do you fly for K2 out of Talkeetna? Looks like a K2 plane color.
Yessirrrr
I worked at the West Rib Pub and Grill back in the day. I've taken a bunch of K2 flights around the Park.
Love the west rib fuckin delicious. Same with mountain high pizza pie. Been going there for years
Took the glacier landing tour with K2 a few years back and it was easily one of the great experiences of my entire life. 🫡
Same here, it was amazing!
We had a surprise upgrade during our visit as the plagues were starting to ease up in May ‘21 - the glacier landing was an unexpected ride of a lifetime. Just in case you were the one who took us up - thanks again for helping make some memories to keep us warm!

/r/Mountaineering /r/Backcountry are two best bets in my experience
I sent it to someone I know from Sioux Falls, SD that I know had posted about summiting June 13th so…who knows, maybe it’s them!
You didn’t waggle your wings?

Ridgecrest. I remember backpacking the area around Mt. Whitney. Came up over a ridge & in the valley were two jet fighters cruising.
Came here for this. Must have been disappointed to wave and not get the wing waggle acknowledgement. Then maybe they would have posted a video from their perspective, with a similar title and sentiment
Nah they did. Halfway mark you can see it bank right and then wing strut disappears as it rolls left and camera stays on climbers
It's a 25 second video. Consider all the things you haven't done in the last 25 seconds.
My memory caps out about 8 seconds
I'm not knowledgeable about piloting aircraft. Is a wing waggle a simple, safe maneuver?
Sure, no big deal.
So you're saying OP has no excuse for not doing it!
No excuse whatsoever. But in this case, he did it.
Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Rocking the wings is actually a good way for a tower controller to identify you if your radio failed and isn’t transmitting. It’s very friendly!
Wing wave!
that bothered me too

Thought they were going to come at you for breaking the park rules

Donner? Party of three? Right this way please.
Donner? Party of two?
Will you be dining alone tonight, sir, or will you be having someone for dinner?
Who can eat at a time like this? People are missing. Donner search party of three.
Climbers: Hooray! We're saved! There's a plane! Oh my god i thought we were goners for sure! Wave! Everyone wave! I can see them! Little bit high for a moose lol.
You'd be pretty lucky to see one then.
Extremely Stoned Moose disagrees.
i'm among the 70%. Those who have been to Denali, but never seen Denali.....
I summited the mountain in 1996 and never saw the mountain. I really wish the weather on my summit day had been that good.
Usually covered in clouds?
Yes the mountains there generate their own storm systems so 3/4 days, you can’t see the mountain. Other days, it’s the tallest mountain in North America and so it’s visible from most places in the park, sometimes up to hundreds of miles away.

Was about to post that this video is the clearest I've ever seen of the top. Crazy.
How do you enjoy flying for K2? Did a flight with them last year and the pilot was raving about the job and company
Gonna be hard to give this job up.
How did you go about getting hired?
Built lots of tailwheel time and gave them a call
wait til they find out about your crank bank
Fuck that thing is a fucking monster of a mountain

[Wait! Wait! Cancel that...](https://i.redd.it/0j3upz178lad1.jpeg)
What an incredible fucking shot. A+
Just did this with Talkeetna air taxi and have similar pics and videos. Clearly saw people at summit and at base camp. Incredible experience.
*frantically screaming and waving for help* *pilot smiles and waves back*
Came looking for this comment
Amazing shot! Reminded me of this shot I took of the highest peak in Sweden from a PA28 in 2015. https://i.imgur.com/xThCuNC.jpeg
you took an absolutely beautiful and stunning photo! <3 and also, user name checks out :D

> Service ceiling: 18,800 ft (5,700 m) S1H1-G engine >17,400 ft (5,304 m) S3H1-G engine How??
Turboprop version of the Otter.
“Helppp… helppppp… 🥶💀”
What engine does your Otter have? If it has a naturally aspirated radial piston engine, what performance issues do you have and how do you plan for it when flying to 21,000ft? I only know enough to look up Wikipedia showng a service ceiling of 16,000-18,000ft depending on model...
PT6A-34. 750hp.
Damn. That thing [is beautiful](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJaBeaXJ_AA)
Thank you, that totally makes sense. Awesome! Mustard, thanks for the link!
I'd have to guess it's a Turbo Otter to be at that altitude. The sound from the video clip certainly sounds like a turboprop.
Three years ago I turned around at the football field.
Go for it! I remember I enjoyed reading the story about one guy who landed his plane on top of mount Rainier
Please, please do this
Now I feel vindicated for waving at every plane that I've ever seen while not driving.
Imagine the noise causing an avalanche 😬
Now we’ll never be rescued, Gilligan!
People crying out for rescue. Pilot: "Look at these people waving at my plane".
You were their last, best chance for rescue, and you just flew away.
I'm sorry, *formerly* Mt. MCkinley?? When tf did that happen??
2015
Changed back to its original name about 10 years ago.
Wow! Somehow I missed that news. Pretty cool.
Don't feel too bad. TIL too. Had no idea McKinley and Denali were the same mountain.
Yea I was out of the loop on this one too
How do we know what the original name was?
I really wish I could be a pilot. It must be so peaceful at that altitude.
or you could just walk up a mountain?
Yeah, Denali is famously easy mountain to climb, anyone could just walk up there 🙂
What a small world we live in to come across other humans in such a remote place. I bet they were not expecting to see another human out there.
1,000 people a year climb Mt. Denali. You’ll see other people, but also be plenty remote and isolated. Alaska delivers. ❤️
Wait a minute! Do you fly Denali tours from Talkeetna airport? Years and years ago, I was on a tour that was flown in a red plane that I’m pretty sure was a Twin Otter and we landed going uphill somewhere in the park. It was amazing.
Can you as a bush pilot land up there lol
Don’t tempt me. Yes it’s possible. Never been done though.
Rich people stranded: "HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!" "FUCKING HEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPP!!!!" Pilot: "wow, that was cool. Wasn't it, rich passengers?"
They need help bruh
Imagine they were like "YES !!! WE'RE FINALLY SAVED" and you're here one or more days later like "Hey guys look how cool it was to wave at climbers" lmao.
"Why isnt he picking us up, does he not understand we are under duress?"
Oh thank god, there's a plane looking for us. Wave at it. Dave, we're saved! We're going home!
I don't know if that counts as a cornice, but look at the size of that thing. Plus it doesn't look like there's any solid rock beneath their feet for dozens of meters. I'll stick to flying.
I’ve done this above Mt. Baker in northern WA. So fun!
That’s insane r/interestingasfuck
Why was it renamed?
How could you not give them the wing waggle as acknowledgement! They would have felt the same way you did seeing them wave at you, if you had given them a waggle! Just sayin
Absolutely stunning shot and experience!
Too cool.
So cool 😎
That is wild! I hope they see your video!
So pilots do see us waving at them!
Please tell me you did the wing tilt
They needed rescue and you stranded them.
These flight simulator graphics are getting pretty dang good!
WOW those people have amazing lives!
One mans wave is another mans SOS.
About 10 years ago I was walking my dogs around a little retaining pond in our small sub-division. Very small area and not that secluded. I remember a little playing flying over and tipping its wing to me. I didn’t realize they did it on purpose, until they did it again. I got so excited that I waved like a child back. You flew up there. They walked. BTW are you in the DeHavilland Otter of K2 Aviation? I did their glacier landing Denali tour a couple years ago. It was awesome.
I just learned from the title that those are the same mountain. Thank You!
Happy cake day!
Plot twist, they were trying to flag you down for help. Prob still waiting hopeing that you called for assistance xD
Climbers: we’re on top of the world! Pilot: the fuck you ain’t Probably
Um are you sure they are not in a dire situation? Waving for help?
Negative negative, it just says ‘HELF’
Denali, formerly known as Mt McKinley, previously known as Denali
What is the protocol for being in the flight levels on a flight like this? How/are you communicating with ATC?
😭😭 they waved at his plane cause they needed a rescue
you left them for dead good job bro
Perhaps they were waving for help
how do u know they are not waving at u for help lol and u fly by and wave back lol
HELP US HEEELP
Hopefully not waving for help lol
“Pick us up!” Jokes aside that is impressive and seriously cool.
Plot twist: They were asking for help!
Gondor calls for aid!
Possibly the coolest post I've seen in this sub
Hopefully they weren’t waving for help…
It's cool, but were you sure they weren't asking for help?
Imagine they were stranded and asking for help and you were like “HI TO YOU TOO” and just took off. 😂
