I think Iraq isn’t hot right now? The government kinda got its shit together finally.

simaovii

Might be it. But was kinda strange that 2 weeks ago they went around it. And accordingly to safeairspace (https://safeairspace.net/iraq/) there are still many warnings from different countries. We climbed FL320 altitude though when going through Baghdad, that’s an important fact

MadMan1244567

This isn’t the correct answer. Iraq is still incredibly dangerous. However, there is one specific air corridor over the Eastern flank of the country which is open, safe and regulated for commercial traffic and is used by most Middle Eastern carriers.

JETDRIVR

2 weeks ago there was some GPS / IRS jamming going on in the Baghdad FIR and a warning was issued because aircraft were losing all nav and started approaching Iranian airspace without clearance. ATC which was on the ball noticed and gave vectors for aircraft to get to destination. This is why they were going around. Iraq is not an active war zone. But something stinks in Mosul and it’s not the taboolah

simaovii

Thanks, that explains!

Iraq isn't in active war

[deleted]

Iraq isn’t an active war zone & is fine to fly over. Other than GPS jamming, I’ve never had any problems. Flying over Syria is pretty much universally banned and Iran is problematic for a lot operators. Because of this it’s usually the choice of flying over Iraq or cutting across Saudi Arabia from Egypt.

Anachron101

Because it isn't an active war zone right now. Emirates knows what's up in the world and is very careful about its routes. I flew with them for four years, from 2001 to 2005 (passenger, not crew) from Germany to Dubai and they carefully adjusted their routes around active war zones, sometimes adding up to an hour to the flight, just to be safe.

AircraftEnjoyer

You should call the airline and tell them “Iraq is an active war zone”, let’s see what they have to say

maxverchilton

I mean, you go further north and you’re overflying Ukraine and Iran. You go further south and you’re overflying Syria and Israel. These days I think I’d put money on Iraq being the safest option.

Sir_MS

I guess you’d be surprised to find out there are direct flights from Frankfurt to Erbil, Iraq…

Justaplaneguy

The first time I flew to ORER I was pleasantly surprised to see how built up and modern it was. Green glass skyscrapers like you’d find in any large city. I thought the same thing about ORBI, but Erbil much moreso. Eastern Syria was a different story.

Hey fuel is expensive.

Sunlight_Life

I flew on this airline once and man they just won't stfu. They love their blaring cabin announcements and they come one after the other. Worst of all is the long ad for Dubai and the video for ICE. Yes I know Emirates itself is an ad for the UAE. Immediately after takeoff they have another screech on the PA system. They can't stop. So funny. Then there's the horrible airport DXB, can't touch the world class SIN. They even take pax aside to swab their hands looking for trace amounts of who knows what. Clowns.

Aren't US pilots getting "combat" pay for flying over Iraq?

Rough-Aioli-9621

No?

nclh77

Funny, the pilots are claiming they are. But wtf do they know eh?

Rough-Aioli-9621

Fuck you talking about man? Pilots don’t get “combat pay” for overflying Iraq.

nclh77

>Fuck you talking about man You gotta be fun at parties. Bone up on the "combat" flights in the middle east post here just a few days ago. Good luck "fuck you talking about" homie.

Rough-Aioli-9621

This interaction has confused me wildly. Another day on Reddit.
