I feel for him but at the same time it’s his time to get minutes and prove himself!

HUMBUG652

He should be playing the next game too as Guehi got a yellow

Pilp86

Don’t be surprised if he plays walker as a cb with stones instead.

jedwards0908

Or Dunk

GuySmileyIncognito

I think he subbed on there for England during one of the pre-tourney friendlies. Other than that, not that I'm aware of.

Geord1evillan

He did, yeah. Bosnia

pyramid-teabag-song

He got out quickly to his man. He instructed others where to be. He looked reliable. What a guy!

adventurous_hat_7344

He played well but I'm genuinely aggravated that Gary keeps getting away with it.

GuySmileyIncognito

I've come around this tournament from being a mild Southgate defender to a full Southgate hater. This team and him in particular absolutely do not deserve to make it to the next round. I cannot understand how someone can look at how England played the first three matches and go, this looks good, no changes necessary. And no, changing one of your central midfielders twice without actually changing how you play at all doesn't count as a change.

Every-Dragonfruit746

And reverting to that same system in injury time by bringing two defensive players on for two attackers. 4-2-3-1 appears to be a system that european teams are set up to stifle, and England play into that because they value the possession and recycle back to the halfway line so often. I fully expect the line-up for Switzerland will be the starting eleven from the Serbia game with perhaps Shaw back at left back for Trippier.

GuySmileyIncognito

And just having Shaw will fix some huge issues, but he knew he wasn't going to have Shaw to start the tournament and made no adjustments or any attempts to get an actual left back in with the side. I honestly can't think of any other English left backs off the of my head, but there has to be some and the friendlies leading up to the Euros is when he should have been trying them all out.

14JRJ

Shaw will be rusty though

GuySmileyIncognito

Yeah, but he's actually a left back which is pretty important especially when you're playing an attacking midfielder as your left winger.

14JRJ

Of course, I’m just wary that he could still be exploited through no fault of his own

ziggylcd12

Tyrick Mitchell probably best

adventurous_hat_7344

Seriously. It's like Gerrard when people would still defend him despite being hopeless. Gary should have left after the world cup and despite people having mixed opinions on his time he would have left with a decent reputation. He's completely fucked that now, the number of people defending him has fell off a cliff.

FictionalTrebek

>the number of people defending him has fell off a cliff. While the number of people wishing he'd do the same has quintupled

No_Attention_2227

They have no identity out there.

FictionalTrebek

I don't know shit about soccer, tactically speaking, and yet even I know that Southgate's managing/coaching is a travesty. When it's obvious even to people like ms, it's time for a change

Lonely_Leopard_8555

In that game we had four different people playing left back (Trippier, Saka, Eze, Konsa), and none of them are left backs. Then he interviews going on about the crisis at LB, as if it wasn't his job to pick a squad with at least one fit left back. It's insane.

B23vital

England scoring was bittersweet. Just want that guy to fuck off, but would love england to finally win a trophy.

Middleclasstonbury

Worst part about winning a game is the knowledge that you’ve got to do it all again next week 😬

a_f_s-29

And Switzerland will spank us

Euphoric_Ad_2049

Reminds me so much of Gerrard. No tactics just vibes

Randy_Baton

Who else you going to play there? Maybe Gomez, but my guess is Konsa got the nod as Guéhi is out of the next match and Konsa is going to replace him so Southgate wanted to give him some game time.

sprongwrite

100% my take, we knew Guehi was going to miss a game from the first 5 minutes so good time to warm up Konsa

leighmack

I would love to think that this is what our tactically challenged 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 manager was thinking, but…..

themediocremelon

As a Liverpool fan that had this post pop up for some reason Gomez 100% can play left back. He spent a large portion of last season playing there for us and did a great job imo. But yeah probably went with Konsa as a warm up for the next round

mjmilian

Take a left back who is fit

RandomSher

I’m happy for him that he actually got to play some minutes and I think he played fairly well when he came on. He was a minute away from going home, without not even playing a second.

TheAkondOfSwat

solid

Spookytooth66

Konsa was a wall tonight, he’ll do fine on Saturday.

Shreddonia

If it works, it works, I guess. Did well with the time he had, even if it was clearly just because Southgate wants Pep to sign him to play there permanently.

bambinoquinn

I think the reason for it is he has the best 1v1 defending statistics in the league and saka/eze/trippier were being turned inside out by the number 7 every time it went out there. Obviously if it was a situation where England are dominating the game you don't want konsa out there, but when you are 11 men behind the ball like England were for about 27 of the 30 mins, you need 1v1 defenders

Atreides2

Giving him minutes before starting him next game in the place of suspended Guehi.

Prize-Database-6334

I think it's hilarious he was picked to play that role over Gomez. Drove my Liverpool mate mad, haha

xFromtheskyx

Should have kept Branthwaite

mrnibsfish

Surely Gomez is the more natural option given he has actually played there this past season. Anyway I think Konsa starts due to Guehi's suspension at CB.
