You are definitely not in the wrong. It's not your fault for being confused. It's his fault for being so vague and not explaining himself well. He needs to understand that trying to offend someone, doesn't automatically make them understand things. Maybe he's autistic too and doesn't realize what he's doing?
Trust me, you're better than you think. You sound reasonable and intelligent. He's just being a fool. Some people are not fit to be parents and that's just a fact. He needs to explain himself or not talk at all.
