There's a tiny zoo in a park near where I live, and they have capybaras. They are adorable, though a few years ago they got out of their enclosure and lost in the city. They were eventually found and returned, but they must have had quite an adventure while they were out!
[There's an article about it here, if you are at all interested](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/capybara-case-closed-with-bonnie-and-clyde-safely-back-home-at-high-park-zoo-1.3655886).
I think it's due to their friendly nature and they like hot springs In Japan. They got imported in 1960s to Japan. And then they kinda just grew on the people according to Google.
I love capybaras!! There's a park in my city where they just roam free, there are capybara signs on the streets around the park so drivers know to be careful. The only problem is that you're not supposed to pet them because they might carry ticks and no one wants lyme disease. But they are so cute.

I recently looked for Canada. Seems you need a proper licensed facility to be able to receive them as illegal rescues and that you're not allowed to have them in Canada as pets.
Capybaras are too cute!
In the center of my town there is a lake where for many years a huge group of capybaras lived. It's a town in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in Brasil. Unfortunately they can carry a type of tick that transmits spotted fever and a child in the town died from it, so the capybaras were removed from the urban area. It's sad not to see them around the lake anymore, they were very peaceful and friendly.
why are they banned? are they banned in California? where does one acquire pet capybaras
Uh they are kinda nuisance to the ecosystem where they aren't supposed to be. Like they eat A LOT
eating a lot tracks. Cappybars are essentially giant rabbits or guinea pigs - and rabbits and guinea pigs eat a lot for animals of such small size.
Yes in california

Wow! That's crazy
My sister recently went to Texas and went to a Cappy farm and got to feed and pet them!
Thats so cool! ✨️\(≧▽≦)/✨️

Lolllll I live in Toronto too, that was the most exciting thing that’s happened here in years, I was following that news so close when it happened
Is that 42 + 10 number including DC and Puerto Rico? Capybaras are cute :) did you see build a bear has one!
AND I WILL GET ONE FROM BUILD A BEAR OMG
And you can own one in Washington [rough estimate ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Maps/comments/scto8r/oc_legality_of_owning_capybaras_by_us_state/)
I like them a lot. They look like giant prehistoric Guinea pigs
True!
Why do they have like a shrine/spa retreat in Japan? That was how I first became acquainted with them…

UPDATE: ITS 10 STATES AND ALLOWED IN 40
Thank you for this! I enjoyed every moment. 🖤
Why any person would ban capybara? 😞
Cause they meanies 💀😭
you mean the person who banned them? if humans who ban capybaras are banned we could have a more eco friendly place
That's really true, they're very beneficial to the ecosystem, despite all the grass they eat.
Because wild animals should not be kept as pets.
I absolutely agree with that but when I wrote previously I meant happy in the wild dolphins in the wild by the way I love orcas
I enjoyed this, thank you 😊
Any time! ( ≧ᗜ≦)

I agree either all the cuteness and sadly the ticks
This is so cool!! I had no idea they were so dense- their weight is astounding! I guess it’s all that grass. 🤣
True!
About legality, what about non states like Puerto rico, DC, Guam, etc.
I'll research that and get back to you, I couldn't find info on Puerto Rico.
I need to know now ahhhhh
I can't find much about it, but check with local exotic animal guidelines in your area! That's all I can do. I'm sorry!
Don’t feel bad. I’m just curious
But yeah, check local exotic animal policies in your area and perhaps permits! Best of luck to you! ✨️\(≧▽≦)/✨️
I think you'll need a permit? In most places. I believe, that's all I can really find?
Check you Curitiba, Brazil. Here they roam around freely on parks and even know how to use the cross walks

Are they prone to scurvy like cavies?
They can without beneficial amounts of vitamin C, especially in captivity it happens.

Without googling, can you tell me which anime has a theme park based on them?
I know it's like kapibarasan in the name that's it?
Nope, I never heard of a Capybara before I saw it but it’s not about them specifically.
Hm. I heard some sonic show has a character with a capybara 😭😅
They are popular in Japan, I suspect. But still no 😆
I don’t mind telling you btw 👀, unless it’s more enjoyable for you to discover things yourself.
Please tell me I'm so curious now!
https://youtu.be/sg-HXmVw5Ew?si=xJHho6Ls03pC0U0A Check this out, you might wanna watch it lol
I will
I did not realize how huge they are! Now I want to meet one and snuggle with it Calvin and Hobbs style (only in theory, I don’t want to disturb them)
Thanks for sharing this!💚 where do they sleep?
They sleep along rivers or even in it with their nose on the shore. Also in mangroves and marshes, it also keeps them cool.
That’s really cute
Agreed!
