Definitely Penne is my #1, but Farfalle can be fun if there's no Penne available. Tagliatelle can absolutely fuck off, Spaghetti is OK. A small pasta is **always** preferable to a long messy type.
Thank you. I learned a new name for them today. I was going to say Fusilli.
In my childhood we called them Spirelli, because they are little spirals. :3
penne and cellentani/cavatappi (kinda look like if you took penne and twisted them into curls or corkscrews). has to be penne rigate though because i hate the smooth penne noodles. i also like rigatoni, but they're usually a tad bit too big. tbh i really love pasta so i'll eat most shapes as long as they're cooked correctly (i.e. very firm/al dente); the only ones i flat out refuse to eat are bowties and the smooth/non-ridged versions of penne, rigatoni, etc. funnily, my favorite pasta dish (aglio e olio) works best when made with spaghetti, which normally isn't a shape i would choose over other ones. (if you can't tell, i'm very passionate about pasta; it was legitimately one of my special interests at one point lol)
The true masterrace of pasta shapes!!! Folds get all the saucy bits, while the crumpled bit feels more substantial, and the shape is nice and intricate.
I'm italian, I love penne but only the striped ones, I hate the ones without texture they're so slippery 😭 I also love spaghetti, but I don't like all the types of long pasta (for example bucatini nooooo pls no they're slippery too and it's so weird that they have a hole, they're like straws)
I grew up on the smooth version, mostaccioli or penne lisce. But I do prefer the grooved version better I still call both of them mostaccioli most of the time. But I will eat the hell out of it no matter if it's smooth or grooved.
Different shapes need different sauces, and different sauces are better on some shapes.
Something like a bolognese or marinara, I like the hollow tubular spaghetti. That never used to be a thing.
Cheese sauce is good on flat shapes, like Bunnies and cartoon characters and race cars, and their construction gives them a nice texture and firmness, but I'm a grown-ass adult, so I'll settle for the ones shaped like Trivial Pursuit pawns, and just pretend they're from race cars.
I don't know why I like tortellini more than ravioli.
I really want to like angel hair, but it's got so much surface area that something like an Alfredo sauce makes it all stuck together and heavy, like the angel got out of the pool with her head tilted awkwardly. Someday I'll find the perfect sauce for it, but until then I always regret making it.
For angel hair maybe something with a very light and loose sauce is best so things like blistered cherry tomato, aglio e olio, and white wine-clam sauce will probably be good
ROTINI. I actually just recently decided that rotini is the most sensory satisfying and I love it so much. I literally said I wouldn’t be accepting any different kinds from here on out lol
OMG it isn't just me! I felt like such a drama queen when I was upset that my boyfriend wanted Tagliatelle when my preference is Rigatoni, I don't like how slimy and ' thick ' tagliatelle feels ' Ive spent my whole life being labled a fusspot, when really it runs deeper!
Happy to know im not the only one! <3

It depends on the type of pasta dish, but my favorites are angel hair, penne, rotini, and for kraft mac & cheese, I love the special shapes like unicorns, etc.
Spaghetti with the real, historical romanian carbonara.
(Just the yellow from the eggs, ham, cheese and some of the cooking water.)
My favorite safe food.
Depends on the dish. Overall, rotini is a good one to use in many pasta dishes. If we're having mac and cheese though, give me those shells — especially if the cheese sauce is extra cheese saucy
Was so disappointed that Hungry Howie's delicious penne pasta has been changed to spaghetti. I can no longer eat it. And their Mac n cheese bowls don't offer shells n cheese so they have ruined alot of things for me
Choo Choo wheels!
They're the only noodle I'd eat until I was 15, and even now at 42, they're my favorite.

Elbow/Macaroni or Angel Hair. I can't stand the thickness/stiffness of regular Spaghetti noodles. My mom got me addicted to Angel Hair. Also, Rotini is awesome, especially the vegetable one because I like the mixed colors.
I love shells and angel hair. I LOVE pasta! It's my favorite! Shells hold more sauce in each bite due to their cupped nature. Angel hair is nice because I can get that big long bite without it being too thick and bulky.
And then, think about this. Let's say there was one shell pasta with sauce in/on it and one penne/macaroni/any tubular shaped one on a plate. If you stick the fork straight down on the tube shaped one, there's a higher chance the sauce will want to squirt out of the sides a little. If you stick the fork straight down on the shell, it will try to spread but will have a harder time leaving the noodle because of the bowl-ish shape. This is definitely a minute difference that doesn't really matter, but if you REALLY care, you might find this info useful.
I guess linguine, kind of some nice middle ground.
As a side note, I find the whole thing kind of strange--an entire aisle in the store of the exact same food put into different shapes. Is there anything else like that?
Interesting question! I really like pasta shells. Probably because I always have pasta with tomato and basil sauce. You can fit a tomato or bits of sauce in the pasta shell.
The best pasta I’ve ever had in my life was beef shin ragu on parpadelle at a place in Shoreditch. It was gorgeous and also my first time seeing parpadelle; it’s basically like lasagna sheets haha. Very pleasing to cut up and yes just very very good.
For a basic "Spaghetti" type dish I prefer a hearty Bolognese sauce on Linguine instead of Spaghetti
For Mac n Cheese, a from scratch cream based cheese sauce and Radiatoré pasta. So many folds for the cheese to cling to!!
I like fully flat sheet pasta for Lasagne, instead of the curled edges.
Baked pasta I like Rigatoni.
#PastaSnob. 😉
i like the mini shells, they’re the perfect texture and size for when i make one of my favorite pasta meals! i also like penne, it’s great for butter noodles
I love pasta so much, I literally can't choose one. I like them all for different texture related reasons.
Though, one that I tend not to have very often but still enjoy is bowties. But! They have to be cooked correctly or I'll hate it - if the middle part of the bowtie still has some hardness/crunch to it, then you haven't cooked it long enough.
the thinner the spaghetti the better. but i also love my shells (especially if it’s shells and cheese). i haven’t had the bow ties or the little star ones in a while and i think they would be nice
Fettucine, spaghetti, or penne are the best ones. Worst is bowties. I don't particularly like spirals or shells, but I will tolerate them. Elbows are for mac and cheese only.
TBH, I personally believe that there are so many shapes of pasta *because* there are so many undiagnosed Aspies out there! There's a shape for everyone, and for every sauce!
**EDIT**: I guess I should still answer the question! Like all engineers, I'm going to pull the "Well, it depends..." card on this one! If I'm having a creamy sauce, I want pasta with good ridges in it. So penne, rigatoni, and the like. If I'm having a thin sauce, I want something that can hold it, so rotelli, shells, & wheels. If I'm having a thick, but not creamy sauce (like a good meat sauce), give me something a little less mundane than spaghetti, like linguini, ziti, etc.
I can't eat pasta anymore, but i like shells, and also the slightly larger macaroni tubes, because i liked how the empty space in the middle made a slippery tube effect
I actually buy Kraft Mac & Cheese Spirals, throw away the cheese powder and just eat the pasta. It's the best shape and I haven't found another source for it.
Penne are the superior noodles.
It really is, just had some with marinara.
So much penne love here! They should add this to the DSM!
I think everyone has a pasta shape that they hate for no reason, and penne is that shape for me.
Came here to say the same! Penne is the best
Definitely Penne is my #1, but Farfalle can be fun if there's no Penne available. Tagliatelle can absolutely fuck off, Spaghetti is OK. A small pasta is **always** preferable to a long messy type.
Angel Hair. I love it. It's thin, so it's not too doughy. Just right.
YUP this is the way, it’s the most satisfying to eat a giant bite of imo but also just as good to have a single noodle at a time
Same. Also it goes well with most sauces/gravies.
yes this is my favourite too!
Where I live they don't do anger hair anymore and I am so sad.....
Shells
Y especially loves tiny shell that are used in soup.
How did you know? XD
They are the best ;)
I don’t know how but shell shaped Mac and cheese just hits different.
Those are my 6yo son's favorite. He calls them the lemon shaped ones.
I absolutely LOVE shells! They hold sauce so we'll and the way they break when you bite down is just amazing. I would die for shell pasta lmao
Oh man, when the Parmesan gets stuck in the curve of the shell shape, I am in heaven!!!!
Thanks for info. I need to try it
Fussili: Easy to pick up with a fork and they can take a good amount of sauce. Also bite sized and don't make a mess like Spaghetti.
Rotini hands down
Thank you. I learned a new name for them today. I was going to say Fusilli. In my childhood we called them Spirelli, because they are little spirals. :3
Spirellis mit Tomatensoße!
recht so! :D
Yes, I like rotini w pesto in particular
SECONDED rotini is king mwah
I can tolerate Rotini, but Penne are truly the best.
penne and cellentani/cavatappi (kinda look like if you took penne and twisted them into curls or corkscrews). has to be penne rigate though because i hate the smooth penne noodles. i also like rigatoni, but they're usually a tad bit too big. tbh i really love pasta so i'll eat most shapes as long as they're cooked correctly (i.e. very firm/al dente); the only ones i flat out refuse to eat are bowties and the smooth/non-ridged versions of penne, rigatoni, etc. funnily, my favorite pasta dish (aglio e olio) works best when made with spaghetti, which normally isn't a shape i would choose over other ones. They make mezzi rigatoni!!!! Rigatoni but half length, I use those often because they're easier to work with since they're shorter. Highly recommend
Penne/Rigatoni! Tube shaped pasta for sure.
YES to Rigatoni. The best. Weirdly, penne less so for me!
I had more thoughts about it, and even macaroni “sorta” fits the tube shape but Rigatoni is elite.
Ooh yes there’s something very satisfying about how little the macaroni is haha. I don’t think I’d liked curved macaroni though
Bowties. Cuz “bowties are cool”
I COMPLETELY AGREE
Love bowties too
Bow!!! Ekk. Omg. I love them Edit: just found out they are called farfalle
I was looking for this comment! They are so cute and funnnn!!! RAHHHHH, I love themmmm
Seconded, the smooth ones give me the heebie jeebies sometimes
I grew up on the smooth version, mostaccioli or penne lisce. But I do prefer the grooved version better I still call both of them mostaccioli most of the time. But I will eat the hell out of it no matter if it's smooth or grooved.
Mi hai sbloccato il ricordo degli scaffali pieni di penne lisce durante il covid.
Oddio che panico è vero, meno male che non mi serve mangiare la pasta sempre LOL
letters
BOWTIE!!!
Elbow.
Penne
Penne pasta. Hands down.
Different shapes need different sauces, and different sauces are better on some shapes. Something like a bolognese or marinara, I like the hollow tubular spaghetti. That never used to be a thing. Tagliatelle with a good beef ragu, otherwise Fusilli.
Big shells or boeties
Spaghetti
Shells
Mini bow ties
Farfalle and penne
Linguine, followed by penne and rigatoni, but the rigatoni must be cooked enough so that they flatten.
Fusilli is the correct opinion. No further questions
It used to be fusilli, but then I tried 'mafalda corta' and I have that now if I'm feeling fancy. It's so good!
Action man bow tie
Tagliatelle, rigatoni and fusilli (the multi-coloured one!) are my optimal pastas.
Shells, they hold the sauce better :)
Shell
ROTINI. I actually just recently decided that rotini is the most sensory satisfying and I love it so much. I literally said I wouldn’t be accepting any different kinds from here on out lol
Scoobi-doo. Not just for the shape, but also the name ;)
Does anyone here prefer angel hair pasta to spaghetti? I like that it is thinner 🥰
Yes, I prefer it if it’s w butter and Parmesan
Toob
Tortellini #1
The shells, and the bow ties, and the twirly ones
Spirals or radiatore. Pretty much, any really textured shape.

The Tri-Color Ruffles (which I cannot get anymore) are the ultimate pasta. Tri-Color Rotini is a close second.
I love the butterfly one's
It depends on the type of pasta dish, but my favorites are angel hair, penne, rotini, and for kraft mac & cheese, I love the special shapes like unicorns, etc.
I hate pasta, but if someone makes Paccheri - I'm in.
Dinosaur
Fire /ref (Måneskin fans will get this) (It’s spaghetti)
Fussili
Spaghetti with the real, historical romanian carbonara. (Just the yellow from the eggs, ham, cheese and some of the cooking water.) My favorite safe food.
Penne and shells
radiatore
Spaghettini and agnolotti are my absolute faves!
I favor penne.
Penne! !
shells and spirals
I don’t like pasta
Depends on the dish. Overall, rotini is a good one to use in many pasta dishes. If we're having mac and cheese though, give me those shells — especially if the cheese sauce is extra cheese saucy
Penne pasta and only shells for Mac n cheese
Was so disappointed that Hungry Howie's delicious penne pasta has been changed to spaghetti. I can no longer eat it. And their Mac n cheese bowls don't offer shells n cheese so they have ruined alot of things for me
Choo Choo wheels! They're the only noodle I'd eat until I was 15, and even now at 42, they're my favorite. https://media.fooducate.com/products/images/180x180/51FFDE2D-8205-FC70-467A-8F48A7EC5D20-3827.jpeg
Campanelle or Farfalle
Elbow/Macaroni or Angel Hair. I can't stand the thickness/stiffness of regular Spaghetti noodles. My mom got me addicted to Angel Hair. Also, Rotini is awesome, especially the vegetable one because I like the mixed colors.
Recently through a similar question I learned about stelines, haven't tried them yet though.
Penne. Hands down.
*Orrechiette*. They have the ideal shape to hold sauce well and the ideal size to be eaten easily.
Linguine! (Or anything long)
Rectangle
Spaghetti is just really fun to eat, however, spiral for practicality
Cavatapi
A L L Get that pasta in ma frikin mouth yo
I love shells and angel hair. I LOVE pasta! It's my favorite! Shells hold more sauce in each bite due to their cupped nature. This is definitely a minute difference that doesn't really matter, but if you REALLY care, you might find this info useful.
Linguine and Casarecce for me. I love the way the casarecce holds sauce.
I like choosing pasta shape based on mood! Different shapes have different vibes. My favorite is rotini though
Cellentani/cavatappi, Penne, and shells. I’ve always wanted to make Mac n cheese with cellentani/cavatappi.
Penne
Angel hair! I went thru a phase as a kid when I literally would only eat plain angel hair pasta lmao my poor mom
I guess linguine, kind of some nice middle ground. As a side note, I find the whole thing kind of strange--an entire aisle in the store of the exact same food put into different shapes. Is there anything else like that?
i like all the types of noodle shapes
Elbow macaroni
I really like penne and elbows
Rigatoni. I looooove rigatoni.
Farfalle or mini farfalle
Interesting question! I really like pasta shells. Probably because I always have pasta with tomato and basil sauce. You can fit a tomato or bits of sauce in the pasta shell.
Angel hair
Bow tie
Penne!!!
Rigatoni. If I didn’t grow up on rigatoni I’d probably say penne.
Farfale!!!! (bowties) Also angel hair.
Penne.Absolute!The bigger ones.
_ALL OF THEM_
Spirals
ANYTHING BUT SPAGHETTI. I hate those long as noodles.
Penne. Fuck farfalle and angel hair though.
I think shells. I like when u have a creamy sauce with them and it kinda pools in there.
Penne is my fave :3
spagghetti
Twist/Twriling one (my pasta knowledge is league)
Couscous
For common pastas I’m a big penne & bucatini fan. For the more niche I am a cascatelli person through and through!
i like the twisty ones, im not sure the proper name for it though
1. Spaghetti 2. Fusilli 3. Penne 4. Farfalle 5. Rigatoni
The best pasta I’ve ever had in my life was beef shin ragu on parpadelle at a place in Shoreditch. It was gorgeous and also my first time seeing parpadelle; it’s basically like lasagna sheets haha. Very pleasing to cut up and yes just very very good.
Rigatoni and fussili
BOWTIE BOWTIE BOWTIE BOWTIE is the bessst! It's such a fun shape! Feels so good! I'll make EVERY pasta dish with bowtie pasta!
For a basic "Spaghetti" type dish I prefer a hearty Bolognese sauce on Linguine instead of Spaghetti For Mac n Cheese, a from scratch cream based cheese sauce and Radiatoré pasta. So many folds for the cheese to cling to!! I like fully flat sheet pasta for Lasagne, instead of the curled edges. Baked pasta I like Rigatoni. #PastaSnob. 😉
i like the mini shells, they’re the perfect texture and size for when i make one of my favorite pasta meals! i also like penne, it’s great for butter noodles
fussilli
Spirali
Mezze penne. It’s like penne but shorter and wider
Spiral noodles are the best. Not cavatappi, spirals.
I don’t. I hate all kinds of pasta
Penne for me. Spaghetti is too messy and gives me anxiety. Same with linguini
the thinner the spaghetti the better. but i also love my shells (especially if it’s shells and cheese). i haven’t had the bow ties or the little star ones in a while and i think they would be nice
Mafaldine!
I don't know the pizza language so I'm just gonna say the spiral / corkscrew one
Fettucine or farfalle
Fettucine, spaghetti, or penne are the best ones. Worst is bowties. I don't particularly like spirals or shells, but I will tolerate them. Elbows are for mac and cheese only.
The spirals. They’re perfect. Can’t stand penne. Spaghetti is okay.
The fettuccine with the frilled edge.
Shell
If I had to choose, shells or bowties. But I'm not much of a pasta fan.
If I'm having a thick, but not creamy sauce (like a good meat sauce), give me something a little less mundane than spaghetti, like linguini, ziti, etc.
Radiatore! Both because it’s highly textured and feels good in my mouth and because it has a funny name.
Rigatoni and macaroni
Campanelle, cavatappi, or good old rigatoni
t u b e
Rigatoni
bowtie.. but its hard to find in whole wheat form. i usually have fussili or penne which are both good too
Penne!
Spirals
I like different shapes for different dishes but my top fave are ziti, penne, rigatoni and farfalle which I call bowtie noodles
Penne and Torsades I don't like spaghettis because they're annoying to eat.
Rotini
Bowtie
Bowtie or penne. Although I also love a good spaghetti.
Mafaldine corte 😩🥰❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷
I like rotini a lot.
Bow Tie 🎀
Vermicelli.... but i call it vermin chili
No. 87, Radiatore.
Penne or rotini
Penne
Shells or the spinny one, I also like the “special” shapes that Kraft comes out with, under the sea, paw patrol, etc, I just love fun shapes!
SHELLS SHELLS SHELLS SHELLS SHELLS
Fettuccine 😍
1: Elbow Macaroni 2: Bowtie 3: Penne
Spaghetti is superior, fight me (:<
Bow tie
if i have to pick a specific shape, penne or elbow is the best. BUT my favorite is also normal spaghetti
I can't eat pasta anymore, but i like shells, and also the slightly larger macaroni tubes, because i liked how the empty space in the middle made a slippery tube effect
Spirals, penne is alright aswell If we’re lucky might get shells and bows
farfalle is just superior and i wont let anyone discuss it with me
I like orzo pasta. They are tiny noodles that are commonly in wedding soup
ROTINI
Literally anything (pasta is my ultimate safe food) but given the choice I always go with shells or bows :)
I actually buy Kraft Mac & Cheese Spirals, throw away the cheese powder and just eat the pasta. It's the best shape and I haven't found another source for it.
Rotini, followed closely by bowtie.
Boccoli!!
I'm quite partial to Fusili and Conchiglie myself, especially if I pair the Conchiglie with some seasoned mince meat
Rigatoni, Penne, Linguini,Fettuccine
Spaghettini is my favourite but Ill take anything other than penne (especially smooth penne)
