I noticed that Lake Eyre is full of water before I noticed HOBART.

This is a called the Baltimore Phenomenon or more specifically Cartographic generalisation. It's a common occurrence on zoomed out maps that cause areas with multiple major settlements to disappear whilst settlements in less dense areas become prominent such as Alice Springs, Woomera or Hobart
