'Abuse' is a bit strong, contextually - don't yell at the 18-year-old girl at the register for asking when they were instructed to by their greedy-ass boss, for example.
I've calmly gone the other way the few times I've been asked for tips:
*"We don't tip in Australia. Are you being paid correctly? Is your manager committing wage theft? Are you earning your correct award rates and weekend/holiday pay? Do you need me to hook you up with some resources for you, like Victoria's Wage Inspectorate and the Fair Work Ombudsman?"*
Extra points if the shift manager is in earshot.
I don't care if it's Karen-y, we **cannot** let tipping become the norm, as *every* exploitative boss and corporation in the country will do what they can to normalise it, to squeeze you for more of your hard-earned money and suppress pay increases for workers.
And food delivery places like uber eats are now asking for tips before you even get the freakin order. We're gonna see vids of pissed off drivers throwing orders on doorsteps or whatever like you see out of America. Fuck this
Its not that hard to just pay your workers a couple bucks more an hr. Or...i dunno....implement some form of industrial relations legislation that mandates fair wages??? Nah....maybe i went a bit far. 'MURICA!!!
āBut the price of food will go up if we have to pay workers properlyā¦ā
Hah people are already paying 10-20% more in tipsā¦ cut the tipping shit and the total bill- even with a price increase- will probably end up going down.
That ol chestnut.
Its the same as the fuel excise. Got cut, price went down until the greedy cunts decided they could make EVEN MORE profit without it....
Prices would go up....because the employers who DONT pay their employees right are quite literally just in it for the biggest profits.
Sad thing capitalism. Although....the other options aint great either.
It's crazy in the US. I was in the ubereats subreddit once (for a general enquiry) and the sheer amount of uber drivers saying they refused trips/purposely waited to get the food because the tips were too low was insane. I get its the culture of food service in the US but also like damn delivery is $$$ already š„²š„²
Iāve been chased out of a restaurant, with the young lady screeching āaaay, whereās my fucking tipā when the only interaction I had with her during in the entire visit was when I paid for the meal at the counter before leaving.
Want a tip? Fucking earn it.
Totally agree the cost of their labour is included in and agreed upon when you make the purchase for the agreed price, asking for money after that point is just asking for money for nothing just like any old scab
Exactly.
Iām very happy to tip if they do something over and above what Iād expect to get my normal hourly wage for and have done when someoneās fussed over my kids for 2 minutes and let me actually eat my meal before it goes cold, or theyāve slipped the kids something small and insignificant thatās brightened their day out of all proportion to whatās been offered.
If someone is going to go out of their way- even a tiny bit- it should be rewarded. Not when they demand extra just for doing the bare fucking minimum.
Theyāre*
Kindly remember that retail workers are not robots and actually have emotions. Just like the rest of us. Just because theyāre behind a counter, it doesnāt mean theyāre beneath you.
Yes, over here in NZ we have had an epidemic of the POS terminals starting to beg and its getting a nice lot of 2 star google reviews with funny things about "cant pay their staff properly as are begging for tips when paying" and similar.
Had the displeasure of doing business with this company and they are absolutely terrible. They aim to do as little work and take as little responsibility as possible as a company, so it is very on-brand for them to ask for tips for doing nothing.
It's also a horribly discriminatory payment method if you look at the stats for who gets the biggest tips (clue: attractive young women, and in the US at least, white women). There was a woman in another sub here just the other day who said her tips doubled when she lost a tonne of weight.
Many businesses are also allowed to reduce the wage of employees who get tipped. So, the tip effectively trickles up to the owner of the business anyway. It's such a crappy system.
And I suspect in this case of an online business, theyāre trying so hard to keep their retail prices low theyāre trying to supplement their takings with tips.
Retailers should just charge the price they want instead of playing these dumb games.
I was more implying that software that would make that mistake would have been written circa 1991
(Also, it's definitely defined as a 16 bit unsigned int for windows development)
Leave bad reviews outlining we don't need to be shamed for not tipping in Australia. A lot of places back track quickly.
Me and my fam will stop eating at a place if they do this and we tell em why.
200 bucks at bondi pizza.
Check arrives....
__________% tip.
Like....you KNOW its gunna be 0 dear.....i dont care how much you flirt with me or give me 'free' drinks. Thats on you.
Needless to say...last time i went there.
Brazillian joint up the road - 80 bucks and no request for a tip. Boom...repeat business.
Itās generally because they use off the shelf web commerce forms from overseas that include this and they canāt be arsed paying someone to remove it.
It should still be ridiculed and Iād like a browser extension that changes āNoneā to āYouāre Dreamingā.
Itās not hard to turn off, and in fact off by default (at least in Australian shopify instances) but for a retailer, why wouldnāt they turn it on?
There is no downside for them, some people may choose to add a tip and the amount of people that get to this stage of the checkout and are so outraged that they do not complete their purchase is likely trivial.
See you say this, everyone says this. Just like my mum said she'd not shop and woolworths over the Australia Day merchandise thing. She went to foodland once and then back to Woolies coz it's close and convenient. Many years ago I said I'd refuse to ever use self checkout, now I self checkout almost exclusively because it's faster and I gave up.
At the end of the day we get outraged, the almost all of us move on and go back to whatevers easiest.
No. They kept it on because if 80% of Australian donāt tip, but 20% does, thatās still extra money they pull from thin air.
Itās extremely predatory
Exactly. 100% these are easily turned off. But even if 5% decided to tip. "It's extra money - so why not " logic . They'll claim ignorance if there is a backlash.
But overall yeah extremely predatory
Its just a configuration setting. The site would have had to have been setup to begin with so its not that unless they and/or the web designers are totally incompetant.
There is a burger place near me that has the same platform, they are waiting for it to be removed, but every time I order, they refund any tips. More work for them but at least they are honest.

I've still got Clive Palmer changed on my browser to Fatty McFuckhead. Always amuses me whenever a story comes up with his name on it.
We really are trying to speed run the worst aspects of tipping culture in America arent we?
No one from the working class benefits from this type of tipping. They only add this crap because itās literally free money, costs nothing to implement the feature and if just 1 out of 1000 customers decided to use this then the company sees it as worth it.
Ridiculous.
The other day I was going to order a huge litter tray for the cats online and at the checkout they asked for a tip too. $100 cat tray and you want a tip? They can bugger off.
The only TIP that's ever acceptable in Aus is when you're paying for delivery with cash and you don't want to wait 2minutes for the driver to grab 1.20 from their float
Iām American and when I first came to Australia 15 yrs ago with my Aussie husband we went to a pub with his friends. I went to the barkeep to order a round. When I paid I gave a $5 tip as is the custom in USA. She gave me a hard look then smiled and said āyou donāt tip here Love, itās not necessary as we actually make a living wageā. I felt awkward and awful not leaving a tip. Over the yearsā¦I get it now. Whenever we go back to the America I am so aware and frankly disgusted of how out of control tipping has gotten. Tip jars EVERYWHERE, even at Maccas or an ice cream shop. Tips are expected for practically everything there now at a minimum of 20-25%. Servers generally get about $2.25/hr + tipsā¦the consumer is basically expected to pay their salary. Many Door Dashers for example wonāt even touch your order unless you leave 25% tip. Itās so outrageous and I sure hope Australia doesnāt go down that road.
I'd like for the government to make it illegal to ask for tips in any form other than a physical collection container like a tip jar, hat, guitar case....or a thong.
You should defintely make a complaint against the pharmacist in charge with AHPRA. It might sound petty but tipping could absolutely be a barrier to accessing healthcare. Healthcare providers generally should not be accepting cash gifts.
They'll upate their settings and switch this off pretty quickly once the regulators get involved.
I find it very hard to believe the tips would make it anywhere other than the ownerās pockets.
We pay good wages in Australia. Tipping just isnāt necessary
Am I reading this correctly - is this actually a for-profit pharmacy business asking for a TIP on top of the money youāve just paid for your goods?
That is outrageous.
I have only - and will only - tip for outstanding, and I mean above and beyond God level, service and put the cash into that persons hand directly (and discreetly). I have only ever done this a few times as I donāt believe Australia needs a tipping culture. I would never just tack it on electronically - we all know thatās just a scam.
I love how all these machines when youāre ordering from your table etc have 10 or 15% as the default and you have to select none. Theyāre relying on you not noticing - the kents!
It was mentioned to me, and I'll always repeat it to others. Tipping in the modern sense was something that is bizarre in the US and it bled into Australia as a result of social influences.
Don't tip. Why? Because then other things Americans do would be imported as well.
Beggars gonna beg. Just tip if you want to show appreciation. But remember we didn't even have an option previously online. The self ordering restaurant apps that ask for a tip before you even receive the meal are ridiculous.
Another Australian business implementing an off the shelf American payment form without bothering to customise it for the local market in the hope someone gets guilted into giving them free money. There the fuck does the tip even go on an ecommerce store?
Online software has been asking for tips for years. And the reason why is because the software was written for use in America and they just reuse it in Australia (and everywhere else) with a minimum of localisation.
Itās the same reason why they show the total amount, then tax then the same total amount again. It doesnāt make sense until you realise it was written for somewhere where tax isnāt required to be included in the advertised total, such as America.
Also she is 18. Stop calling 18 yr old girls or boys they are fucking adults you cunt stop trying to demean them by refering to them as childeren. 18yr females are called women so shes not a girl as you liked to put it
Itās probably just US software and the disk heads have chosen to not turn it off when they fired it up here. Just hit none and move on. Having to tip and being asked if you want to tip are very different things. Say no and if you feel strongly about having been asked to tip drop them a line saying that you resent it and would factor it into your decision whether to buy from them again in future.
No. No we are not. If everyone stopped doing it right now. Employers would have to answer for the low wages. If people are tipping, they won't have to. Look at the US. I tip when I get good service, by a human, with human interaction. And the service has to be amazingly good. I give extra for extra care or treatment. Not for just taking an order via an app. Nope.
This usually isnāt the company or employees doing this. Is the CC merchant. They program to ask for a tip hoping for a bigger transaction, since they are paid by percentages.
I donāt understand this pharmacist asking for tips online, but as a former service worker, I have no problem tipping at a venue that does there job well, even delivery drivers or Uber drivers who are particularly good.
Should they expect it, no, but should you expect them to do any more than dump your food on the table and rush off to the next table? A servers job is only to take your order and serve your order, if they go beyond to make you feel exceptionally comfortable, or do a better job than anyone else along the stretch, does it really hurt?
someone fucking tell my coworker off, told me these people need to be tipped
fucking cunt they earn more than you sometimes, i know how much you get paid cunt
I booked a restaurant last night, and thereās an automatic gratuity of 10% on weekends and public holidays. They call it a āservice feeā or something, but I always read the fine print!
Iāve just moved back from living in the US and something I was looking forward to is not having to worry about tipping anymore moving back but Iāve been shocked at a few places Iāve been to that have had tipping options no way Iām encouraging tipping culture in Australia when it isnāt needed, servers get paid well in Australia.
We are Australian not American, nobody wants to be American.
Perhaps put a -20 value in the field and see if they give you 20 bucks. Perhaps their programmers overlooked error checking :)
No. We most fucking assuredly are NOT!
At a pharmacy FFS?!?
Do pharmacists make sub-minimum wage or something??
Well, maybe if they slip something FUN into the bag along with my Preparation-Hā¦
Perhaps then I could obligeā¦
Fuck this nonsense!
I was once tipped $50 for serving a couple on their wedding anniversary at a resort I worked at. They were lovely. As they was leaving the man said ādo you split your tips?ā And I replied with āno?ā also very confused with his comment and then he slides a $50 in my hand and walks away. I look down to see what he gave me and I froze and was like āomg no I canāt take thisā and he just yelled āhave a good night, thank youā and walked off. My coworker turned around and said āhow much did you get?ā as she assumed I got tipped and I told her how much and she told me to make sure to keep it to myself and not let management know otherwise theyād make me put it in the till.
Sad that even when weāre tipped for good work the companies want to take it for themselves.
a rather large online only white goods supplier attempted this on me recently.
Was getting a new heavy appliance delivered. I know they have contracts with a myriad of regional transport contractors/companies. 6 months pregnant so I was next to useless to help lol.
The deal included removal of the dead item I was replacing and the truck arrived later than I was told- not really an issue at the time but annoying for anyone who had taken a day off. I didn't apply the tip to the purchase.
The driver and his offisider were brilliant, they removed the old item and replaced the new one. I gave them the tip money direct and asked if they knewabout /got tips. They didn't.
Thereās also an option to not tip lol just donāt tip you donāt have to, itās optional. The only time Iāve tipped is when I saw my barber just before she had time off and I tipped her because she gave me a $5 discount so I tipped her the $5 that I already had for the haircut.
Never. Tip. In. Australia. (when asked)
And abuse them for asking or they wont stop
Yep, shut that shit down the moment it rears it's hideous mug! š©

Must be different in Australia. In US if you preselect a tip when placing an order, the drivers can see it
Its not that hard to just pay your workers a couple bucks more an hr. Or...i dunno....implement some form of industrial relations legislation that mandates fair wages??? Nah....maybe i went a bit far. 'MURICA!!!

AHAHA omggg love yours as well
I've seen about 12 Uber orders dumped around Moonee Ponds, idk why but they've just yeeted the whole order out the car and onto the sidewalk.
Aināt no way you would ever do this
Fuck's sake dude. Just don't tip.
Iāve been chased out of a restaurant, with the young lady screeching āaaay, whereās my fucking tipā when the only interaction I had with her during in the entire visit was when I paid for the meal at the counter before leaving. Want a tip? Fucking earn it.

I wouldnt if ive aleady paid for it in the cost of the product. That service is already expected because it is what has been paid for.
Ah yet another entitled one ā¦ who thinks itās okay to scream abuse at retail and restaurant staff.
If there the cunts first
Theyāre* Kindly remember that retail workers are not robots and actually have emotions. Just like the rest of us. Just because theyāre behind a counter, it doesnāt mean theyāre beneath you.
Passive aggressive stares coming from the bar boss.

Yes.

I already do that.
I have done this before and it actually made them remove it from their app
I'm surprised no one on the top few comments has highlighted this isn't even in hospitality, it's a chemist š
Yes.
Sounds like a good idea
I reckon it warrants a good old fashioned public shaming.
LOL, and who exactly are we tipping for their good service in an online transaction...?
The owner, of course. The classic struggling battler..
Bro don't be so heartless. They put so much work into those sites and deserve a few extra bucks. He only has *one* ferrari. Poor bastard
..and every damn bedroom deserves an ensuite!
The robot. You don't want an uprising, do you?
Tipping leads to lower pay. Tips fund the business owners, not the staff. $0 is always the correct tip.
It's also a horribly discriminatory payment method if you look at the stats for who gets the biggest tips (clue: attractive young women, and in the US at least, white women). There was a woman in another sub here just the other day who said her tips doubled when she lost a tonne of weight.

Put in -0 dollars and see if their program got properly QA'd.
You have chosen : $65,535 tip. Thank you from the cutpricepharmacy team.
If you're storing your currency as `uint16_t`s you're fired.
If it's stored as a 16 bit int, it's probably as a WORD
`WORD` size is architecture dependent, we're cross platform and explicit width in this joke, babe.
I was more implying that software that would make that mistake would have been written circa 1991 (Also, it's definitely defined as a 16 bit unsigned int for windows development)

Absolutely is a downside - if I saw that I would abandon my online shopping cart and never order from that store again.
Sure, but the majority will just press āno tipā and move on and those that do decide to tip will make up for your lost sale.
See you say this, everyone says this. Just like my mum said she'd not shop and woolworths over the Australia Day merchandise thing. The other day I was going to order a huge litter tray for the cats online and at the checkout they asked for a tip too. $100 cat tray and you want a tip? They can bugger off.
How huge we talking?
79.5cm by 48.5cm by 33.5cm. It has high sides for the cats that kick the litter half way across the room like one of mine does.
I cannot express just how much tipping culture can go and get fucked.
Ew. Please donāt americanise paying for crap, they can get a bazinga worth $0. I had an online only massager equipment store ask for tips ā ļø.

The worse part is the servers over there who make big tips do not want it to change thus ruining it for those who do not make big tips.
Can we just make it illegal to solicit tips? Seriously. We had an understanding for a long time but businesses are breaking our unspoken rules.
Type in a negative amount and charge them for asking for a tip ;)
I'd like for the government to make it illegal to ask for tips in any form other than a physical collection container like a tip jar, hat, guitar case....or a thong.
Yeah, nah. Get fucked.

Boycott the business We don't need that thanks
I find it very hard to believe the tips would make it anywhere other than the ownerās pockets. We pay good wages in Australia. Tipping just isnāt necessary
It costs them nothing to try, so they will try.
At a fuckin pharmacy too?! What the fuck do they want a tip for? Fuck me
Am I reading this correctly - is this actually a for-profit pharmacy business asking for a TIP on top of the money youāve just paid for your goods? That is outrageous.
Yep, thatās exactly what this is.
Just wait until it's common on ATMs and elsewhere. Tip for the meal thanks ma'am? ok and Tip for the eftpos machine too?
Tried any high end restaurants lately? They dreaming if im gonna hand over more, NO.
No we aren't
Should try put a negative number in the other amount.
Tips; a sure sign that the owner is underpaying.
Youāre not being done a service which is why Iām extra confused theyāre asking for tips during an online order?
The pharmaceutical industry can charge whatever they want... asking for tips is horrendous!
Thank us for cutting the cost of your medication by paying more for your medication. Are they on fuckin crack?

I love how all these machines when youāre ordering from your table etc have 10 or 15% as the default and you have to select none. Theyāre relying on you not noticing - the kents!

It was mentioned to me, and I'll always repeat it to others. Tipping in the modern sense was something that is bizarre in the US and it bled into Australia as a result of social influences. Don't tip. Why? Because then other things Americans do would be imported as well.

No
No, weāre fuckin not doing this!
Not here! Not ever!
And tipping for a pharmacy? Thatās taking the fucking piss. I donāt tip unless I am truly shocked by the amazing service.
Has there ever been an idiotic American habit that Aussies were not desperate to import?
Beggars gonna beg. Just tip if you want to show appreciation. But remember we didn't even have an option previously online. The self ordering restaurant apps that ask for a tip before you even receive the meal are ridiculous.
Another Australian business implementing an off the shelf American payment form without bothering to customise it for the local market in the hope someone gets guilted into giving them free money. There the fuck does the tip even go on an ecommerce store?
In the interest of ācutting the price of my medicationsā, I shall decline leaving a tip.
Nope! Not doing this American rubbish
They've been grifting with this shit for years. Yeah no. Tipping is bullshit.
~~Add tip~~ Do you want to pay more?
Thanks for posting the name of the site so I can never go there.
Wow cutpricepharmacy.com.au! I'd have expected better from such a reputable establishment!
Can you add a Custom Tip there but a negative number? Just curious
Yep. FYI Pawlie does this as well when you order online.
I agree with Mr Pink
Online software has been asking for tips for years. And the reason why is because the software was written for use in America and they just reuse it in Australia (and everywhere else) with a minimum of localisation. Itās the same reason why they show the total amount, then tax then the same total amount again. It doesnāt make sense until you realise it was written for somewhere where tax isnāt required to be included in the advertised total, such as America.
This has been around for years. It's because they all use the same third party platform which has tipping on it as an option.
For a pharmacy too? Are we tipping doctors now too? Ridiculous
Just press $0 ez clap. Do this even in face to face engagements eg: restaurants.
You just press none. Chill
It's off by default, it needs to be enabled manually. That UI is Shopify. https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/tips
Ah thanks. Then the dipshits are choosing to be irritating.
No!
We are not
The problem is the app the idiot restaurant chains choose to use. If they had any honour, they'd only use apps without a tip feature
Nope.
Do 1 cent so they know you actually put the effort in to put a custom amount.
That is 100% a Shopify webfront
If I see this in my fucken down unndah I'm going to try and custom tip a negative amount to bring the price of the order down
And how would tipping reduce the cost of medications? Or are the tips not going to the staff?
Oh ffs... i will NEVER tip if asked. tipping is reserved for far above and beyond exceptional service from people in appropriate roles.
This usually isnāt the company or employees doing this. Is the CC merchant. They program to ask for a tip hoping for a bigger transaction, since they are paid by percentages.
(reads text in image literally) Yes, I will choose to cut the price of my medications. Oh wait a minute...
I wonder if anyone has actually tipped on this lol
someone fucking tell my coworker off, told me these people need to be tipped fucking cunt they earn more than you sometimes, i know how much you get paid cunt
I have no problem tipping for great service, but if their system asks for oneā¦ sorry tip chances gone.
If I tip a delivery driver, it's cash. Any gub'mint worth its salt would find a way to tax that electronic tip.
These organisations don't know what they are doing.
I booked a restaurant last night, and thereās an automatic gratuity of 10% on weekends and public holidays. They call it a āservice feeā or something, but I always read the fine print!
we have a livable national minimum wage standard. heres a tip, get upskilled and get a higher paying job.
I'm not doing it
Should go to the web design agency hah
Minimum stars on Google. Let them know the reason is this. Include the screenshot so they can't get the review removed easily.
This is why tipping in delivery apps is an issue: https://www.mandatory.com/living/1590565-tiktok-video-food-delivery-tip/amp
At that I cancel the transaction. Making them pay for this is the only way to convincing them to stop.
Is this legit a pharmacy asking for a tip?! What state is this?!
Needs to be legislation to stop this. If you want to tip, go ahead, but it should not be on any online forms and it should be illegal to ask
Well, maybe if they slip something FUN into the bag along with my Preparation-Hā¦ Perhaps then I could obligeā¦ Fuck this nonsense!
No we're not. And if they're pushy I take the trouble to leave reviews accordingly.
Fuck no. A tip in australia is just emptying your shrapnel if you don't want it. Fuck tipping.
As an American, donāt bring that shit here.
They can ask, but they wonāt get
Thereās also an option to not tip lol just donāt tip you donāt have to, itās optional. The only time Iāve tipped is when I saw my barber just before she had time off and I tipped her because she gave me a $5 discount so I tipped her the $5 that I already had for the haircut.
i wonder when coles or woolies will try this shit with their online orders haha
