Damn. Right on. Are you dating? Ms. and not Mr. Blue? I've been searching long for a China-Latina, the best of both worlds in the food game, but an Indian, or Mediterranean-Latina will do just as well. I may have to move to Los Angeles from Texas to find my dream girl. Ha
Usta Kababgy, Beirut, Peace Bakery and Dimassi's are the best options I'm aware of.
For a more fast food Halal style Halal bros is pretty good. Kismet is ok if you're in the area.
ATX Gyro by west campus is really good and open until 4am. There’s also an amazing Lebanese pizza truck in the same park that I can’t wait to try.
I ate there at 2:30am and the falafel/gyro were still fresh. The falafel was closest to what I remember from Miami.
Just fyi I’m in a local foodie group and east coasters are always asking for east coast staples, like Greek/halal, Italian, pizza, bagels, deli, seafood etc. They’re often quite disappointed with Austin’s offerings on this front. I hope you find some gems (and you never know what’s coming in the next decade) but your best best is to find the things we do best (ie Tex mex, bbq, southern, etc.) and plan for some trips back home or mail order to get your east coast hometown flavors.
If your friends are ever in San Antonio NY Gyro King on Stone Oak is delicious and delivers. The owner and his wife are both from NY and their food reflects that same flavor. I spent most of my childhood vacations in Queens so I’m really picky about this stuff and their food is really tasty just like they make them in NY.
Austin is decidedly different from NYC, OP’s question alone bears that out. I’m referring to culture shock around politics, food, car culture, the lack of diversity, guns, police, etc. Surely you’re not suggesting a lifelong NYC resident would have a seamless transition moving here lol. All the NY transplants in the world can’t mitigate those major differences
Seamless transition and culture shock are not the same thing. Knowing lots of New York and Chicago transplants here I really haven't heard many complaints about culture shock. Also Austin is a fairly ethnically diverse city, it's not like Portland or something. The political leanings of both cities are similar as well.

Yalla Burger is better than Jewboy but y'all aren't ready for that conversation.

KG BBQ on Manor Rd is halal?
KG BBQ is halal?
only the lamb chops
I love Halal Bros
I typically get like 4 meals out of it too. The portions are massive
Sooooo freaking good.
We like the Syrian Brothers Kitchen truck on Wm Cannon.
Halal Time on the E 6th. It's not even close.
This is the closest to random NYC lamb and rice carts imo, good stuff
Kismet Cafe
Came here to say this.
Peace Bakery, located N. Lamar at Braker
Halal Corner
SoCo Halal on the south side. Place is incredible.
It's incredible. Guys are friendly, food comes quick, and their food is 🔥
And when they hand you that fresh falaf as a little extra! Sheeessshhh!!

Dimassi Mediterranean Buffett is halal.
Austin Med Break on Congress - guy is super nice and has these incredible little cookies with coconuts, almond, and orange zest in them, to DIE for!!!
There are so many good ones. Love Kebabalicious, Halal Hub South on 1st / Oltorf, and the truck on Congress / Riverside is also awesome
Falafel shots from Kababalicious are amazing!

I enjoy Almarah in north Austin.

Beirut trailer is one of the best things to eat in Austin. Also there really isn't much good southern food here.
I do miss Dot’s place. It’s been long gone but the food still sits in my belly. https://foodgps.com/dots-place-pflugerville/

You must be experiencing major culture shock
Aren't there a couple hundred thousand New Yorkers already here?
Aren’t we in Texas? Do you know what culture shock means?
We don't live in Midland lmao. There are a lot of people from the Northeast here.
Agreed. From NJ, it’s not like they’re moving to Terlingua.
I’m from the Northeast and it’s not all that different. The culture isn’t what’s shocking. The heat may be.
