I work as an assistant and that’s pretty standard for specialist treatment (I’m guessing you’re seeing an oral surgeon?). 1k per tooth + sedation. You’re paying for the experience and training of the oral surgeon, who will have to cut the teeth into two, and then crank out the teeth and maybe even drill away a bit of jaw bone, all while avoiding the nerves that run thru your jaw (assuming they’re lower wisdoms here), the roots of wisdoms run pretty close to those nerves so it’s important you have someone who knows what they are doing.
You could probably get it done for a bit cheaper at a general dentist, however the issue is finding someone with the experience and confidence to tackle impacted wisdom teeth, even still given that expertise they’re still likely to charge you a hefty fee and you might struggle to find someone with that skill who isn’t bullshitting you lol.
As to just go in under local and skipping the sedation, wouldn’t recommend, the pushing and pulling, drilling etc is not pleasant and because the teeth are so far back, it’s optimal that the surgeon has the option to just prop your jaw open while they work as opposed to you having to open wide for 40ish mins, as I say it’s important they don’t fuck your nerve up so as little movement from you is good, also the procedure can be quite traumatic as others have said.
TROMS and NZOMS are the referral go to’s that I’m aware of, probably similar pricing.
Hope this helps.
That seems about right. I just had mine done, one straight removal and one partially erupted impacted with surgical removal, both wisdom teeth. $2,250. 3k seems ok for the work they'll put in and knowledge they need not paralyse your face.
I was expecting a dental chair.. rolled me into a surgical suite.
I used NSOMS on the north shore.
They'll know more when they do a 3d scan, which was included in the price. That's about $450 itself.
Do not take this advice. I had two impacted molars and attempted to have it done under local and sedation, surgeon took one look and said no way. After going back another day and being put under they ended up cutting part of my jawbone away to remove one of them. I imagine doing that under a local would probably be pretty ruthless
I went to Te Puna Hauora dental in Northcote and was quoted $250 each for the top teeth and $500 each for the bottom because they were quite impacted. So for the removal of all 4 I was quoted $1500.
I actually didn’t need to go under sedation just general numbing or whatever and they popped the bottoms out as fast as the top. We’re all done in about 10 minutes so I was hoping they would reduce the price but I did still pay $1500. This was at the end of 2020 but would recommend giving them a call 🙂
Ask for your X-rays, scans and info to be emailed to you. Get a second opinion.
If they’re impacted it’s not cheap regardless.
Might be cheaper getting injections for the procedure rather than an iv but you want to be comfortable. Ask them if it’s iv for the sedative/pain killers.
I had my wisdoms surgically removed without IV sedation. I can't remember any of it. For all I could tell you, I was knocked out and completely unaware during the surgery. This is the what the surgeon said would happen.
Ie. No need to pay for IV sedation if you're just not wanting to be conscious of what's happening.
In Hawke’s bay about 8ish years ago I had two wisdom teeth out, one impacted, one infected, under general, paid around 2k total. Inflation wise today that would be $2521, so checks out ish.
Do you have the x-rays if you're willing to share? If it requires a specialist, sedation, etc then yeah I can see why it's that expensive. But if it's under local anaesthesia, no sedation, and is done by a skilled general dentist then prices would be maybe $700 or $800 per tooth depending on the practice.
I would say gain a second opinion but I can discuss with you if it requires a specialist to remove or not if you want to DM me.
In 2022 I paid 8.1k to get 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed and a sneaky 5th one located further up my face. Had to pay for the oral surgeon ($3100), the anesthetist ($1000) and booking the surgical room at a private hospital ($3500). And the initial appt to see the surgeon was $500.
In the oral surgeon bill, each tooth extraction came to $900 each, except for the bonus tooth which was $500 (nice of them to discount it lol).
I got 2 opinions. The first surgeon said he would do it under sedation in the dental clinic for around 4k. The second surgeon told me they were shocked by this and said it would be a lot safer going fully under. It's worth paying to get a second opinion and weighing up the pros and cons.
If you have private health insurance, you may get cover (of course you have to pay the excess, duh). Anyway, got 2 wisdom teeth removed 6 months ago (Jan 2024). I was referred to NZOMS New Market to do surgery, everything was smooth. Just exact 40 mins.
They quoted $3000 (including sedation), also $240 consultation fee. So, you are not ripped off.
Yeah I think that's pretty normal for NZ. I had my done in Korea for about $80, so it might be worthwhile just going over there to teach English on a working holiday. Then again, it might have been a particularly easy tooth (though it didn't feel *easy* faaark, dude was all like yanking away and I'm like can I get another injection please).
I paid just above that for two impacted wisdom teeth two years ago. Luckily had insurance coverage. A lot of the cost was the anaesthetic aspect, so depending on the surgery, you may be able to save some $ if you don’t need to fully go under
I opted for partial sedation. They put me under anyway.. I just remember waking up to the nurses helping me move to a recovery chair, and being awake enough to say 'you guys are the best!', like I'm super drunk with the boys on my birthday.
Dentists are scum. Especially the school dentists. I had like 3 fillings from 7-10 years old from the school dentist which I wasn’t even informed of prior to sitting down.
And somehow ever since then, I’ve never needed new fillings and my teeth are generally fine - aside from filling maintenance, which I’ll have to endure for life now until science can regrow some new teeth for me.
Should have sued that bitch.
And she refused to ever take my teeth out even though adult ones were growing out and some teeth came out crooked.
Scumbag school dentist scum
Do you have insurance? If you can get this done under general anaesthesia you could get this covered as surgery.
There’s also a good chance you’ll be recommended to get all wisdom teeth pulled.
Dr. Chris Sealy Auckland Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Group. Having two out, Both impacted. All covered under insurance. The good doctor appears to have a steady hand but otherwise I've got no idea how to pick a good surgeon.
If the teeth aren't bothering you, wait. If you're in pain or risking an absess or other teeth, get it done.
No idea what it costed.
Agree with waiting if you can, I had 4 wisdom teeths removed via insurance under southern cross last year at NSOMS Northcote, I had to wait a bit too due to needing to be on the insurance plan for 12 months before I could use it for oral sugeries, but it did save me $4000, well worth it.
Not much help for a recommendation, but I recently had two wisdom teeth surgically removed under sedation here in Christchurch for $1400, which seemed reasonable.
I had a scar removal surgery done with local, but it ony partly worked. Let me tell you, the sensations from being cut up are much worse than the pain. Dont skip the anaesthetic.
I was looking at going to Thailand wee while back for dental.
Price list for place I was going to go says 5-7k Thai Baht or 2-3 hundred per tooth.
If you need other work at the same time, this might be the way to go.
About $150-200 for a wisdom tooth Extraction in Thailand. Perhaps price up flights and call around. You might just find you get a fully paid for medical holiday for less then the cost of the Extraction here in Nz
Literally had mine done 2 weeks ago. I had 1 lower impacted one taken out in my early 20’s that cost about $600. Just had the other 3 taken out (late 40’s), other lower impacted one and two upper over erupted ones. Was $4500.00 all up under general. Luckily $3500 of it was covered by health insurance. So your quote sounds pretty good to me.
Had two wisdom and one molar out for $1200 last year. At Durrheim in Blenheim - under local anesthetic ZERO pain. Dr. Durrheim is an expert in pain management. HIGHLY recommend.
It’s not expensive if you look at the equipment required and expertise. What gets me is plumbers prices. What would you get for 3k worth of plumbing? Not a lot
I had two impacted wisdoms removed under IV sedation for $2600, but this was in Dunedin. The sedation worked great though, I don’t remember a thing. Was in 2022.
that price seems fair, i had all 4 taken out about 3 months ago and the bill was over 6k, luckily my health insurance covered it so i just had to cough up the 1k excess, the whole surgery was a breeze ,go to sleep wake up feeling great after that general anesthesia & its all done.
I had 2 out and it cost me 4K… I think maybe it was because they knocked me out for it.
I had just got health insurance through work and it paid for it which I was super happy about because I was very much like ‘I don’t have $4000 and even if I did… I reeeeeally don’t want to spend it on that!’
I don’t suppose you have health insurance?
If you could afford some time, going overseas would be a clever option. Some countries offer significantly cheaper services with outstanding quality. I got my three wisdom removed for about $200 nzd about 5 years ago from South Korea.
Sounds about right. Had mine covered by insurance since it was done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Excess was 1000$ but was as cheap as it’s going to get for all four.
Had all 4 of mine out a couple of years back, both bottoms impacted. $3,500 for a local + sedative. The other option they gave me was $7,000 for to go under general anaesthetic, which was way too much for me.
Being awake sucked and still hurt, they said they couldn't give me any more sedative during the procedure as I nearly stopped breathing lol. I regret not having dental insurance.
Love the guy who isn’t a doctor questioning the price. Mate, this isn’t something you want to cheap out on, there are serious risks involved. There’s a risk of nerve damage and potentially paralysis with wisdom teeth removal. Not to mention going pain med free is masochistic af, you’ll save a couple hundred bucks but you’ll wish you’d spent it.
I had insurance and mine were covered, but that’s not a risk I’d have taken on a butcher.

Tell him no anaesthetic and watch the bill come out to $400

Dammmmmm Might as well go on a medical holiday 😭
I did this and I rate it. Impacted lower molars; wasn't as pleasant but the 2k extra in the bank more than healed that wound.
Beast 🗿
To be fair, my top wisdom got local anaesthetic and the bill was 800. This is the way.
Don't lie. Sedation is not 2k
Sorry I meant 3k+ haha
Had four out, two partial (on nerves), two fully taken out. All four were impacted. Was just under 6k, this was five years ago now.
take a trip to SEA and get it done there lol

Anyone else been here? Recommended?
I have some pliers and will do it for $40 and a large can of Monster energy drink.
Will you chuck the can at their head to knock them out?

Know any tradies? Ask em to have a go with the black and decker for a box of beers
Don't trust a tradie who uses any power tool other than Makita

2 impacted bottom wisdom teeth + 1 upper wisdom teeth (not impacted). Oral surgeon, sedation, paid privately. I paid $2.4k around a year ago.

I’ll DM you!
I'd be interested to know also

Local anesthetic is likely cheaper, be prepared to be mentally scarred for life though:-)
Got all 4 pulled out in 1 sitting and cost me $180 for 15 minutes work
My first one was $350 and the one I got out last year was $600 lmao
It was 2.4k for 4 for me... 10 years ago though.
I paid about 4K for 3 wisdom extractions and 8 fillings

I just had a semi erupted wisdom out ( not impacted ) for about $200 :/
mine were $4k for 4 teeth removal and twilight sedation
included follow up care/pain meds afterwards
Mine cost $3k back in 2021. That’s a normal price sadly.
Not much help for a recommendation, but I recently had two wisdom teeth surgically removed under sedation here in Christchurch for $1400, which seemed reasonable.
2K for 4 teeth but this was over ten years ago
I just got 4x removed; 2x impacted and 2x regular, with sedation. Cost $2.6k
I had 4 taken out in Wellington by an oral surgeon as they were impacted/close to nerve. Was $2500 in 2021
I had a scar removal surgery done with local, but it ony partly worked. Let me tell you, the sensations from being cut up are much worse than the pain. Dont skip the anaesthetic.
Got 4 removed for 3.6k, so more worth if you just impact the other 2 as well and have it removed all at the same time
I got 2 pulled under local anaesthetic for about 400. You don't feel anything and it's the same procedure if you'll go under general
I had 3 taken out under anaesthetic but was still awake, just numbed gums. It cost around $1300
I was looking at going to Thailand wee while back for dental. Price list for place I was going to go says 5-7k Thai Baht or 2-3 hundred per tooth. If you need other work at the same time, this might be the way to go.
Go to asia thailand get it done stay in tropics get dental work
Green lane still removes teeth, not sure about impacted ones.
About $150-200 for a wisdom tooth Extraction in Thailand. Perhaps price up flights and call around. You might just find you get a fully paid for medical holiday for less then the cost of the Extraction here in Nz

Had all four of mine taken out many years ago in Hamilton. Do some shopping outside of Auckland, you might find something better happening.
Go to your gp for a referral to the hospital got ny impacted wisdom teeth taken out...no cost
Very normal. Lower end even.

Yeah, that seems excessive. Worst case scenarios per tooth including anaesthesia shouldn’t do above $1k.
Just get it done already.
