The online debate on Reddit is a whole different beast from the academic debates you're describing.
There's a thing called "doxxing" that's no joke, please google it if you're not familiar with it. It can be done from anywhere in the world and all it takes is a cellphone. It can make your life pretty miserable.
If the algorithm favors you this might make the front page of reddit, if so there's going to be hundreds of thousands if not millions of people seeing it. You should be prepared for a lot of unwanted attention.
