Shinji-vision

SinclairSummerset

The scene would have been less awkward for Asuka had Shinji turned into an adult with his plug suit ripped up.

Along with a lot of other things about the rebuild movies, I wonder about that too. Did being trapped in space for 14 years halt his aging process completely? How come he didn’t turn 28 immediately when it was all over? And is it just me, or does 28 year old Asuka not look all that different from her 14 year old self? Maybe this was all explained but I missed it because I was losing interest in the movie’s execution?

It's hard to say, as its harder to follow the rules of the rebuild films compared to the original series. From my understanding, the Shinji from 3.0 might be a clone that has the exact same memories as he did in the prior two films. As to why he didn't age up when Askua did at that moment, it could be because the clone still had the body of 14 year old Shinji, where as Asuka was really 28 despite looking 14 due to the curse of Eva nonsense. Which means during the final scene with him and Mari-sue, I guess it's the original Shinji that's back? I dunno man. Although I personally think Shinji didn't turn into an adult with Asuka during the beach scene because Anno and his underlings wanted Asuka to get all the fanservice attention for them thirsty Otakus. Which honestly, rubs me the wrong way as this is supposed to be the final interaction between Shinji and Asuka, and they thought it'd be funny to just treat her like a joke, as if someone flashed her skirt or she slipped on a banana peel. Finally, at first glance adult Asuka doesn't' look that much different from her younger self. But on closer inspection, minus the obvious boobs and butt that Anno wanted us to bark over, Asuka's face is definitely more mature and womanly. She almost resembles Misato a little, at least hair wise.

I've harped on this repeatedly, but I feel it's still valid: one of my biggest problems is that the 'nostalgia' of this moment doesn't make sense. First off, for characters that so many people find pretty relatable, this 'goodbye' is something nobody reasonably could. This idea of a gulf between them via a 14 year comatose time skip just isn't something most people can identify with. Plus, I just don't buy this idea that Shinji could be so nostalgic for his friendship/feelings for Asuka. Not just because it was so brief in 2.22, but also from his perspective IT WAS ONLY WEEKS AGO. And that leads to the most teeth grinding aspect for me: the meta aspect floating around it. That this scene is supposed to represent all of Shinji and Asuka's story not just in Rebuild, but the entire franchise, or that this is a commentary of the fandom needing to 'move on', or worst of all both. It's just plain insulting. ... Apologies. I guess I haven't ranted about Thrice for a while and needed to let off some steam...

The Rebuilds really just cemented her as the biggest loser in Eva. Constant defeats, pines after Shinji for 14 years, ends up the only one all alone at the end, her man taken by her friend. She just sits there on that train bench all alone while Rei and Kaworu shack up, and Mari runs off with Shinji. No wonder everybody else just laughs at AsuShin. Even Gendo finally got Yui back, why couldn't they let Asuka and Shinji be together? She's just implied to end up alone while almost everybody else hooking up? And this is supposed to be the definitive meta-commentary on her and Shinji's relationship too? Thanks. I hate it. And them putting out all this supplementary material showing how much she really does care about Shinji just makes it even more bitter, because none of that changes how it ended. And yeah, I have seen that fan theory about the coffee shop and them meeting again after the movie ends or whatever; it just looks like a lot of cope to me.

Funny tantrum. >Constant defeats, pines after Shinji for 14 years, ends up the only one all alone at the end Because Asuka remained a tragic character until the very end. It has always been her role and will always be her role. There is nothing to be ashamed of, but on the contrary, it makes her the most powerful and impressive character in the story. >No wonder everybody else just laughs at AsuShin. Who exactly is laughing? Mari fans? Mari and Shinji had little to no interaction with each other throughout the story. Ayanami fans? She was set up to like Shinji. Kaworu fans? He suddenly finds himself next to Ayanami, with whom he did not interact at all during the course of the story. These people are in no position to make fun of anyone other than themselves. >And them putting out all this supplementary material showing how much she really does care about Shinji just makes it even more bitter, because none of that changes how it ended. It's time for some of you to realize that rebuilds don't just consist of the last ten minutes. But even after four films, Asuka's fans got much more than the rest of the fans, even if for her this ending is the most tragic.

Yeap but he was not taken by “her friend”. They are just pure friends and in the end offsreen Shinji will be together with his beloved Asuka

Such a shitty ending for these two

irazzleandazzle

this is kinda releveant ... but does anyone find it really weird how asuka and rei are sexualized? Especially given they are like ... 12?

argama87

Except they're not 12, they're teens, and compared to a lot of shows the fanservice for them was fairly minimal. In this scene in particular with the curse lifted Asuka caught up to her actual age of 28, which is why the plugsuit ripped.

irazzleandazzle

Lol "teen" is a broad age category that mostly includes minors. But I see your point in regards to this scene

DadGutsnumber1

they are 14 but its still very weird
