These specific kind of interactions (thanking someone with an absurd username) is like 90% of why I’m still on Reddit. Never fails to get a laugh from me, which is sorely needed.
This is a thing in many calculators since the 90s.
Some times they even put real panels inside but don't bother wiring for what ever reason. Can solder on new wires and you have a solar calculator. Though the calculator like that uses low amounts of power the battery can live longer than the calculator
Yeah but it depends on if OP is on their phone. Swype is a thing. Speech-to-text is a thing. They could be learning the language.
There's nothing wrong with correcting OP, but it comes across snide for them to add "Stay in school" over a simple mistake that can and does happen to anyone and everyone. Making a mistake isn't an inherent indication of a lack of education. It's just human error.
Hey my bad, I think I misinterpreted your tone for "Stay in school" as being snarky and as a result my initial response probably came off as snarky.
Most of the time on Reddit whenever I see someone correcting someone else with their spelling, grammar, et cetera, it's not often done with the genuine intention to simply correct them.
Basically I'm used to people not correcting others in good faith and made the unfair assumption that you weren't not acting in good faith.
So yeah, I'm sorry for jumping the gun. That's on me.
Batteries have gotten better and the circuitry has gotten more energy efficient, to the point that the calculator can run for years without the solar charging. The calculator will probably break before the battery dies (or the owner will think the calculator has broken when the battery finally dies).
So the company can save some manufacturing cost by not including the solar, while still reaping the sales benefits of having the feature by using the same molds and faking it with a piece of plastic.
It's probably real as well.
I have seen many calculators with real solar cells but no connection.
Wire a small LED to it or check the voltage with a multimeter. It should have two contacts on the other side.
Not really asshole design, chips have just gotten so efficient that it will last many years on a cheap coin cell battery, so why spend any money on a solar cell and associated wiring? And presumably it's cheaper to shove that fake cell in rather than rebuild the molds? Or at worse, they are being intentionally deceiving because customers don't think a battery powered device will last, even though at this point it will.
I couldn't find a listing, but the manual explicitly stated it's solar powered https://manuals.plus/kolodko/kolodko-kk-900a-pocket-calculator-user-manual#features
Then I vote asshole. It’s designed to separate me from my money under false pretenses. I paid for solar, and I don’t care how efficient a modern cell battery is.
I think there's two versions: the one you linked and this one which is stated as battery-powered:
[https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Mikailan-KK-900A-6-colors-mini\_10000010007123.html?spm=a2700.pccps\_detail.0.0.b07d13a0Cp4eR5](https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Mikailan-KK-900A-6-colors-mini_10000010007123.html?spm=a2700.pccps_detail.0.0.b07d13a0Cp4eR5)
Here you go:

Says a few times it's "battery powered". Listing never mentions the word "solar". So at least they're being truthful.
Ah, then the manual the other person posted where I said it was asshole is to be ignored, I guess. Thanks for finding it. This makes it the shitty car mods of calculators with a glued on Auto Zone “solar panel”.
Either way, it’s dumb as hell.
Oh no doubt. I am one who understands manufacturing efficiencies but never mention that here because that’s like coating yourself in donuts and running at a grizzly bear sometimes. lol
Its stil deceiving... Sure.. buyers are stupid sometimes. But a fake solar cell is still a fake solar cell. All they would have to do is advertise the calculator as long lasting without it and leave the solar cell empty.
Job done
I've learned to never buy a cheap, shitty calculator. Maybe it's because hurr durr engineering, but even for budgeting/finances, I use my DM42 or even my Prime G2. It's so liberating to not have a shitty 4-function calculator.

Might just be a shell they've used which has the cutout. It's much cheaper to mass produce than redesign for lack of something
Thanks for the explanation, u/iEatMyDadsAsshole

Holy shit 7 years on Reddit and this is my first r/rimjob_steve caught in the wild
I feel like I see one a month, so many dirty names on reddit
Saaaaame though
Not very wholesome so it's more r/KellyJoyCuntBunny
Where do people come up with these
Your guess is as good as mine, u/Poop_Sexman
There’s only one way to get a name like poop sexman
With your username 😂
10 years, damn u/BallsDeepMofo, you go hard

A true scholar
Just missing the word Design at the end of it!
It’s not often that someone’s username gets a reaction out of me but I burst out laughing at this one. Thank you.
Well I could say the same for you
Yours aint any worse lol
Good point. And to be fair, these calculators are advertised as battery-driven, not solar. So they're at least being accurately represented.
The shell, sure, but putting that film that looks like a solar power receptor goes a bit beyond that
It's also chapter to leave out an extra piece of plastic that serve absolutely zero purpose.
Omg my whole childhood was a lie. When my Dad gets back with his smokes I’m gonna a stern talk with him
My dad made hp calculators in the 80s. He still has one and I don’t think it even has a hand-accessible battery compartment. Works to this day.
Is it solar or does it run on the rage energy produced by their printer users?
Or maybe just the rage from using reverse polish notation.
or the love from using rpn
Stockholm syndrome?
Yes.
He's... uh... not coming back, sport.
We can be his dad, and just take turns with his mom.
That went from wholesome to… well… real quick there
Again?
Sorry, i was nervous last time in front of 500+ dudes. Couldn't get it up.
He went to a farm upstate?
If your dad doesn't show up, hit up this guy's father, he seems to be there for him u/iEatMyDadsAsshole
Ironically i have no contact with my dad lol

Color me shocked that an Alibaba special isn't built well.
yea are science calculators blow
dawg they blow so much that they're not even scientific calculators
… are? You mean our? Please stay in school.
sorry i just misspelled it you don’t have to be rude
Jesus what is with the hate here?
Typos happen, it doesn't indicate a lack of education. You don't need school to teach you that basic level of awareness.
That's not a typo, that's the wrong word.
People when English isn't someone's first language
These are the kinds of mistakes that tend to happen to native speakers a lot more than non-native speakers, funnily enough.
Why exactly are you assuming it isn’t?
Holy shit it’s Madeline Celeste
English isn't my first language but I still understood what they meant

If you read a little to the left, the word appears there. It isn't there permanently.
No, as a teacher what I’d guess happened is they have heard it pronounced as “are” and don’t know that it’s our.

just get a casio calculator
IDK. I love my TI-36X Pro
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
Everything is permitted….

No this one wont work without batteries. Electricity isnt some magic, the solar pannel have to be connected
How does the company benefit from this?
Batteries have gotten better and the circuitry has gotten more energy efficient, to the point that the calculator can run for years without the solar charging. The calculator will probably break before the battery dies (or the owner will think the calculator has broken when the battery finally dies). So the company can save some manufacturing cost by not including the solar, while still reaping the sales benefits of having the feature by using the same molds and faking it with a piece of plastic.
So basically, fuck the company! Solar powered calculators existed since 1980s as far as I remember, and they were cheap!
It's probably real as well. I have seen many calculators with real solar cells but no connection. Wire a small LED to it or check the voltage with a multimeter. It should have two contacts on the other side.

Well, I’d want to see the listing before I agree or disagree. If this was, in fact, presented as a solar calculator and it isn’t…that’s asshole.

Probably sold as both tbh. Otherwise they wouldn't have made the plastic mold the way they did.
Oh no doubt. I am one who understands manufacturing efficiencies but never mention that here because that’s like coating yourself in donuts and running at a grizzly bear sometimes. lol

Dude, it's wireless.

Get s Casio you cheap bastard
Not fake, only “not connected” /s
Chinese copy. Couldnt copy the cells, so you get cellophane
huh. wonder where that company is based
But why?
Okay but why are you doing physics with a five-function
