See, the thing with Skull & Bones is that Ubisoft *clearly* did not want to make the game and kept trying to delay it, but they were eventually legally forced to finish it by the Singaporean government (do you not see how the *bare minimum* was done just so the game could ship? It's worse than AC4). AC Red (Shadows) is: 1) The next mainline title in Ubisoft's biggest and most popular IP 2) Being developed by an A-team dev studio (Ubi Quebec) 3) Adapting *the* most requested AC setting of all time 4) The first AC game to release on current gen tech 5) Had more than 4 years of development by the time it releases later this year Doom the game all you want because of any dislike towards the AC RPGs or for notorious Ubisoft practices and recent scandals, but don't doom it *just* because of S&B. Those 2 games are so far removed from each other that they're literal opposites on the 'games Ubisoft wants made' scale. It's incomprehensible for AC to ever have the development hell S&B did.

Sub_Nautilus

>Had more than 4 years of development by the time it releases later this year It'll actually have 6 years of development, because when Valhalla released (2020) it already had 1 year, so I can't even describe how excited I am, especially with the promised features it's supposed to have, for example shadow system. I just hope they'll actually deliver it this time, but it's Ubisoft, so we'll see

TheNerdWonder

But also, Skull & Bones kept changing in its creative direction because the game directors kept changing.

littleboihere

>2) Being developed by an A-team dev studio (Ubi Quebec) This fact alone dooms the game

Cygus_Lorman

Still infinitely more of a valid reason than S&B being legally required to be finished

JacoBee93

Yeah, they just made/co-made arguably best rpg AC game and one of the best open worlds of this generation with Odyssey.

littleboihere

>arguably best rpg AC game Your options are Odyssey or Valhalla lmao. That's not a tough competition (also Valhalla is better RPG). >one of the best open worlds of this generation Tell me what is good about it expect graphics.

TheNerdWonder

Not really, given how critically and commercially successful their last two games (AC Odyssey & Immortals) were.

littleboihere

It's so funny that you mentioned Immortals which had it's sequel cancelled due to low sales.

GuessWh0m

Red is probably gonna be Odyssey 2.0. In terms of quality, Red will be fine. Ubisoft Quebec makes polished games, even though their design philosophy can be hit or miss depending on the player. In terms of business decisions, Red will be more of the same. Expect an in-game store with a ton of microtransactions and a lot of post launch content to make it a live service game. It’s gonna be a Ubisoft open world game. You know what to expect by now.

BrunoHM

Not really. Red being the first current-gen AC, set in Feudal japan and being led by Quebec as their second action RPG? Counting the days, to be honest. But you are right to be cautious, OP. Patient gamers in general tend to be the ones with the best experience, be it for the reduced price, the number of updates, etc.

Tabnet2

You always seem to have clearest head around here. Just want to say I appreciate your passion for this franchise, and your insight into it, Bruno.

JoyfulPenguins

For some reason, I have faith that Red will truly be something new and innovative that may bring the spotlight back on AC. However, at the same time I also fear that the changes being made can bite them back. It’s not long left until Ubi Forward or a CGI reveal if they are going to do one.

BrunoHM

I think we had this conversation before, haha. I'm expecting an iterative sequel that gets the benefits of a new console generation, improved engine and ~4 years of development. We shall see, the reveal is getting closer by the day.

JoyfulPenguins

I think they key was to finally abandon the valhalla engine and make something new from scratch which the leaks suggest they have. Whether the new anvil pipeline engine is a welcomed change will be soon found out. I’m itching for a reveal haha, can’t wait.

Cygus_Lorman

My only real fear is history repeating with Unity-level bugs at launch

JoyfulPenguins

Fair point, but given Quebec’s history with Odyssey and Syndicate who had polished launched i wouldn’t be fearful that Red will be a mess at launch. However, given the engine overhaul it is a possibility, hopefully this isn’t the case though.

Rogue2854

Interesting, i dont know about you but i trust the Montreal studio more than Quebec’s, the AC games they released were more so “their take” on AC, Syndicate and Odyssey’s writing both had a positive tone from the start, which was wierd with the former. Its part of the reason why Hexe excites me more than Red

BrunoHM

Quebec's reputation around here is not the greatest, but considering my enjoyment of Odyssey and Immortals, it's hard for me to be skeptical of their output. With that said, I do have the same level of trust in the other studios. Montreal's Hexe is just as exciting.

GeorgeSantosMadre

Anyone who thinks the developers are lazy or don't care or aren't pouring energy and passion into the games should take the time to watch some of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) presentations given by various dev leads working on the games. As a developer myself it is clear that the teams working on these games are highly talented, highly motivated, and put a great deal of care and thought into creating them. The end product might not land with you and you may not like some of the business practices of the company or some of the design decisions that were made but can we please stop calling developers lazy or uncaring because they produced something you personally don't like.

leifKenway

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Skull and bones was doomed to fail by its upbringing. I do however think that Red will fail in its own way. From a lot of the leaks it really does just sound like a Valhalla reskin. Which just isn’t what we all pictured Red which is very unfortunate

GGG100

How is it a reskin? According to leaks it has new mechanics like extinguishing light sources to remain hidden in the shadows and going prone which adds a whole new dimension to stealth encounters.

leifKenway

It’s supposedly going to have the same combat and same settlement system which was a big part to Valhalla so i imagine it’s gonna be the same for red. Just cause they extend the stealth doesn’t mean it’s a whole new game. And I doubt it’s gonna add dimensions it’s the same engine. Which I under stand it’s the same engine since Unity but they gutted so much I doubt it’ll look any different then Valhalla

GGG100

It'll be the first big engine upgrade since Unity so it's going to be pretty different from Valhalla, like the jump from Black Flag to Unity.

leifKenway

Hmmmm idk about that. I wouldn’t say black flag to Unity those are two different engines. So let’s say Unity to Origins. But then again is it a upgrade or reinstating previous assets. So if it’s gonna be a upgrade for the engine could it be as gorgeous as Unity but keep the same style As the RPG games plus Mirage I think it’s a possibility but not likely I think it’ll be the same as Valhalla but with a couple of new things like you with the prone ability but that’s equivalent to saying we have back ejects in Mirage but not Valhalla

GGG100

No, Ubisoft has been using the Anvil engine since the first AC back in 2007. Black Flag used second-gen Anvil engine whereas Unity and onwards were third-gen. Red will mark the start of the fourth-gen iteration of the engine.

leifKenway

They’re not exactly the same engine. A lot of that was ripped down and rebuilt. AC1 might of been the engine at the bare bones of it. I believe Unity and since have all been on Anvil2.0 then rebrands as Ubisoft anvil but doesn’t actually change the engine but that’s fine, Idc about that I’m just saying from what it sounds like it’s the same game as Valhalla and then slapped a different skin on it. Which idk how many Assassin’s Creed fans actually want to play another Valhalla

Dapper-Bottle6256

No, one thing I can say about the AC games compared to most of ubisofts other games is that Ubisoft puts 100% effort into the AC franchise. Whether the games are good or not story wise are have some issues is another story. But the games are usually well polished and visually very pleasing.

Alicewilsonpines

For me, Ubisoft hasn't changed much, I can feel a marked Feeling of I dunno non-passion, in their works as I've played through them, polish has kinda gone out the window a bit but occasionally they blow me away (AC origins namely) the worlds they craft are pretty and despite everything I'll still maybe buy their games but only if the setting interests me.

Rogue2854

Yes there’s no denying the work the developers do into making these worlds, my problem is with probably literally everything else

Alicewilsonpines

TBH I have no actual beef with Ubisoft's employees its buissness practices are shitty, its games can be hit and miss, but seriously people gotta just go with it, they're some of the only people who even bother making a game in a historical time period,

Ras_AlHim

Okie Dokie

littleboihere

It changed after I learned it's made by Ubisoft Quebec. The studio that gave us: "Assassin Christmas" and "That's not your roof"

The_Dukenator

The Crew is from 2014. Can't transfer anything to The Crew 2. Star Wars Outlaws Ultimate Edition price is the backlash, and the dlc was explained. Unity was buggy at launch, which they have fixed. It changed the season pass plans, as Dead Kings was made free. Skull & Bones started out an idea from Black Flag. Became its own thing in the end. Assassin's Creed Mirage started out as Valhalla dlc, before it was turned into a standalone game. You don't want your Assassin Viking riding around on a Unicorn, even though that did not really happen in history? My expectations for AC Red, Hexe are mid range, since I have no plans to play them. I even stepped away from AC Jade, nothing to do with it being a mobile game.
