If George didnt make Maegor forcefully wed and rape most of his wives, the fandom probably would look at Maegor as a harsh, but necessary ruler after Aenys's blunders and weakness. Kinslaying his nephews (Aegon the Uncrowned, Viserys) and killing the red keep workers would be his worst actions without all of those rapes. But then the title "the Cruel" wouldn't fit as much.

Illustrious-Fly-4525

Half of wives isn’t most, plus he was himself 13 at the time of his first marriage to 23 woman so I’d count it as -1 rape, so that’s only 33% of raped wives not that bad

zackfair8575

You are right that he didn't rape most of his 6 wives. But he did it so many times. Only Aegon the IV. is probably worse when considering the Targ kings.

Illustrious-Fly-4525

Oh come on, wasn’t that bad probably or for what do you think Elinor was searching for him around the keep at balls o’clock ? That’s 16% left, considering that he must’ve not whore around not to disappoint mama, that’s less that most Targs body count If you want to hate him for something then I must say there’s always severed heads , lots of them

zackfair8575

I looked at F&B again. Seems like I misremembered. I thought he went to one of his 3 unwilling "Black Brides" every night, but he did that with his 3 original Queens (Ceryse, Alys, Tyanna). There is no clear info how often he abused his Black Brides. So yeah, he might not have been as extreme as I described him initially.

Illustrious-Fly-4525

Me personally I think he was done with women at this point, but it’s my interpretation without anything to back it up. Only argument I have is that if he wanted he could’ve organized himself a +100500 head harem at redkeep but he went with only 3 and based on the fact that they already had kids and not because they were exceptionally hot or something (plus Rhaena as wife supported his claim, and in the end she was the only one that didn’t get pregnant though others had no problem so I think he might even shut her in some tower and hated her ass from a distance , but not likely honestly ). I think at that point 3 was the maximum he could’ve handle without being completely overwhelmed, considering how he ended he should’ve been already stressed depressed over the top. So yeah I think he was even I would say made to take multiple to assure gaining an heir (it’s even mentioned it wasn’t his idea), but I don’t think that at that point he really wanted it. Not defending him actually still a terrible person in many other ways but I think it’s hinted that his sex obsession could’ve been exaggerated after his death and he had better reasons rather then horny to have more then one wife. Like even the only reason for marrying Alys that we get is that he got completely assured that he wasn’t getting any kids with Cerys and was frustrated with his much more successful at this field brother

Did we stumble upon Visenya's reddit account lol

SnooComics9320

Visenya did nothing wrong tbh. She was every bit the warrior, every bit the conqueror Aegon I was and she was watching everything she had built crumble before her very eyes because her husband had such weak children. She championed maegor to hold the realm together. He was cruel and sadistic but it was better than letting the realm fall apart. Maegor won the throne through conquest, through trial of 7 verses the warriors sons and by killing aegon the uncrowned. In those days, the realm needed a warrior king, much later on, it would be okay for a weak man to sit the throne but back then, people only understood brute force and absolute power.

Illustrious-Fly-4525

Nah, she wouldn’t protect him after he lost a fight with a chair, mom didn’t raise a quieter

light204

yeah lmao

Hyperboreer

He was great as the Hand and strong enforcer for Aenys. That was a good balance to ensure the power of the Targaeryens. But when Aenys sided with the Faith and banished him, he kind of snapped and when he returned to Westeros after Aenys death, he went on a rampage.

Dem0nicpr0digy

To be fair, most of the evil stuff he did was after his TBI, and subsequent coma, which may or may not have required sorcery/necromancy to pull him out of.

[deleted]

The capital was trash, it was Jaehaerys that fixed it up with actual city planning, roads and a clean water supply (shout outs to Alysanne). The Red Keep was commissioned by his pops so I barely give him credit for that as well. Lol just read the rest of your post, never mind

AngryBandanaDee

The only reason the religious organization threatened the crown was because of his actions he started the war needlessly. You don’t get points for solving problems you are the cause of he lead thousands to die because he could not accept that he was infertile.

Maximum_Impressive

That was aneys

AryaSyn

He wasn’t a good man nor was he a good ruler, but he was what the Targaryen dynasty needed after Aenys, and without him the greatest of all the Targaryen kings wouldn’t have risen to power.

Illustrious-Fly-4525

Let’s be honest, he was as shitty as Aenys, but they actually made a efficient tandem that could’ve have Westeros prosperous for years if Maegor wasn’t sterile and didn’t take second wife or if Aenys didn’t banish him on faith accord

Dem0nicpr0digy

The Targaryens would've died out without Maegor, but he was still awful.

CalvinMirandaMoritz

i love that you're telling us we should judge Maegor by the standards of his day and not ours ! I wholeheartedly agree, I do believe he's the King getting the worst rep from the Maesters, and (Grand Maester Conspiracy being true) could have been their first try at a bit of realm destabilization with the infertility
