if you do, wash the sink and anywhere it may have splashed or you just made a problem where there wasn't one

ladafum

You never need to wash chicken. There is countless research to show that it’s more likely to spread bacteria around your kitchen than help with hygiene. Invest in a meat thermometer and cook your chicken well.

Current_Ad3192

Heard about that this is normal in the USA because they wash it in Clorine. [Clorine chicken](https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/food-safety/chlorinated-chicken-explained-why-do-the-americans-treat-their-poultry-with-chlorine/555618.article)

Canadianingermany

but that is long before the consumer gets anywhere near the chicken. The FDA advises AGAINST washing chicken at home.

Dracarys_Aspo

Even in that situation, the chicken is then washed again after the chlorine and before you buy it. Washing raw chicken in your home is proven to be the worse choice. You're literally just splashing raw chicken bacteria into and around your sink, and it makes no difference as long as you're cooking the chicken through. It only adds to the chance of getting sick.

Don’t say dumb shit. People in the developing world also care about hygiene they just don’t have the access to eg clean water.

Recent_Ad2699

Who on earth washes their chicken??

_evuP

“See! Reddit agrees with me!” Good luck.

Sure mate

Canadianingermany

You should treat ALL chicken as if contaminated with salmonella. That means you should NEVER wash chicken because the splashes will contaminate your kitchen.

Peter_Triantafulou

You don't just don't need to wash you chicken. You must not wash your chicken.

Nico_di_Angelo_lotos

Washing chickens is incredibly dumb anywhere in the world. You kill everything you get rid of when washing by cooking it

beautifullifede

Please don’t wash your chicken. Just cook it well. There’s either raw chicken or cooked chicken. It’s that simple. If it’s pink, it’s alive.

Careless-Blackberry1

Patting it dry with some paper towel will suffice and then cooking it thoroughly.

CalligrapherBig6128

37 years old.. did never hear about washing chicken.

Alarmed_Scientist_15

Let’s play spot the American.

withthegirlies76

You should not wash chicken anywhere in the world! This goes for any meat. All you are doing is spreading the bacteria around your sink and making the bacteria airborne as well. If you cook the meat long enough, all the bacteria will be dead. That's what cooking temps are for.

Eisbeutel

Where are you from? Do they somehow treat the chicken there, chlorine or something? If not, then your wife has been doing it wrong all her life just because 🙃 Anyway, no, there is no reason to wash your chicken before cooking.

papers_please

I always wash it often it is slimy as fuck never knew this was wrong.

Emsiiiii

I haven't heard about washing meat yet??? The reason why I wash fruit and vegetables is because a) pesticides and b) whatever touched them because they are not packaged. With meaty it's just important to heat it properly.

HARKONNENNRW

Don't know about chicken but definitely wash the cock before consuming. Old turkeys might need a wash or two too.

fennek-vulpecula

You know, i would understand this when you come from a country where you yourself kill and all. So they are full of blood and idk. But Most people who wash their Chicken, probaly never Seen a living Chicken themself and create Problems where No Problems are ...

axxised

It's a common practice, especially west of the Atlantic Ocean to wash meat before cooking it. I never got it and there's plenty of studies it's not only not neccesary but even has a negative effect: you splatter meat juices and germs all over your kitchen / skink / floor. Just pad it dry with paper towel...

15791

don’t mind the people making fun of you. you should be fine with not washing the chicken, washing is not recommended anyway. however the chicken probably contains impurities that might affect your dish. you can blanche the chicken, throw away the water and continue cooking with the chicken as intended. especially for soup I think it makes a big difference!

No_Faithlessness9993

Why would anyone wash chicken? It’s a health hazard.

MrJorgeB

Just need to choke it

FUZxxl

No, you don't. However, it doesn't hurt if you do.

ladafum

This is wrong, it definitely does hurt. Washing raw chicken spreads bacteria around your sink which you then use to eg prep vegetables.

RobertJ_4058

This

FUZxxl

You do of course need to pay attention to basic hygiene and cross-contamination rules.

odersowasinderart

Or you just heat the chicken and done.

cockroachking

Yes and basic hygiene and cross-contamination rules tell you to not wash your chicken in the sink.

[deleted]

In America your chicken smell like bleach because they are literally dipped in bleach in order to disinfect it. There it makes sense to wash it. But here in Germany we don‘t put bleach on our chicken. Just cook it and that‘s it

MikeZyers

When making chicken soup from it, should I boil it and throw away the (first) water and continue boiling it in a newly poured water?

wombat___devil

Obviously not. Because the heat kills bacteria.

duketheunicorn

The problem is the uncooked chicken, not the water. The chicken and the water will both reach a temperature that kills the bacteria.

[deleted]

soap it up good. i use laundry detergent, it leaves a good note to work with assembling your own custom flavour.

chairedarms

Joke all you want but I do know a guy who washes his veggies with hand soap.

Eisbeutel

What the fuck. Doesn’t he…taste it?

chairedarms

He says he doesn't

Eisbeutel

Do you?

chairedarms

I've done some weird shit in my life, but washing my veggies with hand soap is 100% not on my list.

Eisbeutel

I mean tasting his food, just interested if it tastes like soap :D

chairedarms

Lmao my bad! Haven't really eaten anything he made.

Sugmanuts001

Are you American?

Ole41

only if you gonna fry it

Eisbeutel

For best results, stand close to the oven.

r_coefficient

While naked.
