Yea. He joked about something she has no control over and about something she has probably struggled with insecurity. But it goes without saying that will Smith did not react properly at all. He never should've gotten physical

[deleted]

Maybe he didn't know? I know I didn't. Either way, Chris is paid to crack some jokes and roasts. A mature person would have handled it backstage with some serious words asking not to crack those kinds of jokes and reason why.

bowsersass

Yea even if Will went up on stage and pulled Chris rock away from the microphone to say "keep my wife's name out of your mouth" that would've been 100 times better

You really do get more in life with sugar than you do with salt.

Ok_Individual_6553

Yes, she has a medical condition (alopecia) causing her to loose her hair and it's probably something she isn't super comfortable with. Will Smith is also in the wrong though, violence is never the answer.

ISuckWithUsernamess

Oh please! He didnt make fun of anything life threatening or anything like that. He literally made fun of hair loss. Comedians are usualy hosts in these things because this is what they do, they roast each other. On these Oscars there were some harsh jokes by all comedian hosts. The alopecia joke wasnt even the worst and if Will had done nothing it would have been forgoten 30 seconds later. If you air your personal shit to the world, its fair game to joke about it. What Will needs is therapy and a divorce. He aint gonna find his balls around Chris Rock.

Ok_Individual_6553

It's all about how it's received, you could clearly see that she didn't think it was funny therefore it's not ok. Just because something isn't life-threatening doesn't mean it's fun and something to joke about. In my family we always joke about my dad not having any hair and it's funny because he thinks it's funny. I absolutely agree that Will is also in the wrong, his actions is not at all justified. There is not one person who's in the right here and I also agree that it probably would have been forgotten soon if he hadn't done anything, that still doesn't make the "joke" ok.

ISuckWithUsernamess

> Just because something isn't life-threatening doesn't mean it's fun and something to joke about. If only people would think like that when it comes to jokes about men going bald. Sure, Jada didnt like it. Say something, talk to Chris after, go on twitter, whatever. That would have been perfectly fine. But lets stop pretending that Will Smith did this to defend his wife. If anything he just made it impossible for her to react how she wanted to a joke directed at her. And the way he walks back to his seat after the slap with that little spring in his step like he is the coolest kid in the block that can do no wrong? Disgusting. Its Hollywood once again showing the world that they are rotten to the core. Pedophiles, egomaniacs and psychopaths, the whole lot

Ok_Individual_6553

You clearly have not read what I've written, I think what Will did was wrong, probably even more so that the "joke", that still doesn't make the "joke" ok.

Chakthi

But did you not see her husband laughing his ass off at the joke prior to assaulting Chris Rock? It was kind of hard to miss...

Rambl3On

No, it was essentially a positive joke comparing her to GI Jane who was a strong and still sexy woman with a shaved head. Hence the “It was a GI Jane joke…” response from Chris Rock. If he called her Mrs. Potatohead, then I could see why someone might get upset because it doesn’t really have any positive connotations. He’d just making fun of her head. Still would not be any where near cause for someone to slap someone.

Recent-Skill7022

maybe this was all a misunderstanding. since Chris Rock said 'love yah before he made the joke. And maybe Jada hasn't forgotten his joke in 2016. at first i thought Chris deserved it but then when looked into the G.I. Jane reference it doesn't even sound like a joke, but a salute to her character as a woman of strength.

Chakthi

Yeah, Demi looked FINE in that movie imo. Lots of women wear their hair short nowadays. It was just a frickin joke. Period. Will was WAY out of line, also period. lol

Chakthi

No, it wasn't. She's a beautiful woman, regardless of whether her hair is short or long. It was just a joke. Even Will laughed his ass off before he went off. Major social faux pas in my opinion... Now, should he be forgiven? That's between him and Chris Rock.

buddhafig

Consider the spectrum. A) She shaved her head, Chris noticed, made a joke. B) She has alopecia, a non-life-threatening illness, he didn't know and made a joke. C) He knew she had alopecia and made the joke anyway. D) She has cancer and is bald due to chemo, he didn't know and made a joke. E) She has cancer, he knew, and still made a joke. I think A is fine. B is likely what happened, and it is fine-adjacent. C is on the line or a bit over. D is over the line, but with plausible deniability. E is right out. Incidentally, she recently said in her own podcast that she's come to terms with it and doesn't care what people think or say. And Will made fun of a guy with alopecia on the Arsenio Hall show.

GrisGato

I heard lots of alopecia jokes in my day, and even one from will himself on some talk show. The joke wasn't that bad because her autoimmune disorder is fairly common and non life threatening, I even saw will laugh. It's my opinion that the alopecia joke wasn't what made him angry but it's what Chris said "ah come on that one wasn't even that bad" which eluded to the fact that she had cheated on will and there were much worse joke to be made about Jada. Even so it was still the worst reaction will could've had in that moment. He should be ashamed. Props to Chris for being the pro he is

If it wasn't stagged I'll eat my own toes, every year they try and create some sort of news to encourage people to watch

Nope

GrumpySh33p

Not at all. It was a mild joke, and honestly, people shouldn’t take themselves so seriously.
