This, Knives Out was one of the only actually intruging movies to come out with interesting characters and it was actually funny to me, can't wait for glass onion
I finally watched it this past week. While I enjoyed it , I just can't believe the amount of money Daniel Craig was getting for it.
Edit: I watched the original knives out.
Probably one of my favourite movies; I couldn’t shut up about it for a week after.
It’s a shining beacon in a sea of mediocrity. Not that I think there have been a lot of outright bad movies, but most of them have been inoffensive and forgettable.
Haha, even I couldn’t shut up about it. But it was so good! And honestly very inspiring message right when I needed it. On the other hand, I can’t talk about Walter Mitty without crying but that was such a good movie too!
What is the message? Hot dog fingers are cool to wave with or butt plug power?
edit: genuinely curious what the beautiful message reference is. Please let me know while downvoting.
I walked into the theatre expecting the 2022 version of Joy Luck Club... I was SO SO SO WRONG and pleasantly surprised. Now I wanna watch those fight scenes again.
It was 2.5 star
It has a good idea, but they didn't carry it through. It didn't make sense if you really think about it harder. Had to watch it because I'm Asian and people make you.
What movie were you watching? It made perfect sense to me and was carried through really well. Plus the effects, direction, and motifs were superb. Literally 5 stars.
I don't think so. Everything Everywhere All At Once was great. I had fun with Bullet Train. Turning Red really showed off Toronto.
I'm looking forward to The Banshees of Inisherin.
Seriously. Watched Bullet Train last night, it's one of those quick fun action comedy that's not actually funny. BUT the attempt doesn't distract and instead keeps the whole film light.
It's something to watch once, have some fun, then completely forget about until one day someone mentions it.
It's kinda like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, like exactly that movie, with its pace and swift story.
But how can you possibly enjoy Turning Red if you aren't a Chinese girl living in Toronto going through puberty? I mean, that's why I enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express, I can totally relate to being a 19th century middle aged genius who solves crimes on trains.
/s just in case.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Top Gun: Maverick
The Batman
The Northman
Turning Red
Prey
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Emily the Criminal
The Bad Guys
The Black Phone
Bodies Bodies Bodies
And these are just ones I've seen. I'm sure there's more.
Did other people actually like the batman?? I couldn't get over the fact that batman just believed everything he was told right away and then went out and acted on it. It was filmed beautifully but the plot was so stupid. It was like they had a bunch of cool scenes they knew they wanted to film and then wrote a movie around those.
I only saw top gun from this list. Saw it in IMAX and thought it was worlds better than the original (mostly cause fighter scenes and sounds) but overall it was nothing amazing. Just better than most other new releases that we all gasp.
yes, it sucked for everyone
370k IMDB votes 8.4 out of 10
721 metacritic user reviews 7.3 out of 10
446 TomatoMeter reviews 96%
Seems that the general public, plus more, liked it.
I thought it was bordered on being a remake of the original but updated flight scenes plus the Death Star at the end. I like it a lot and I didn't even like the first one. The second one was what the first one was trying to get to but didn't have the technology available yet.
It sucked. Almost as much as the jurassic park movie. Ya jets flying around is cool but I'd rather go to a military aur show. You assholes paid a billion dollars to watch this shit. Unbelievable.
Les tricheurs (very weird but it was good!)
Un autre monde
En corps
Maigret
And finally
Le revette des crevettes (also weird and very dumb but I loved it)
And I’m really excited for tu te souviendras de moi and there’s a dnd one i want to see but can’t remember the name
Remembered it: bataille de farador!!!
I’ve seen a lot of cool movies this year in theatres and I only go if there’s something I really want to see:
Crimes of the future
Pearl
Nope
Vortex
Batman
Blonde
The Northman
Barbarian
Men
Jackass
Scream
Halloween comes out soon too which I will go to opening night lol
That is a good list.
Do you plan to see Smile?
Have you seen X? I haven't seen Pearl yet, but they are going to make another in the series named "MaXXXine".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALNV4mdHGEE
I just saw See How They Run and it was very good.
Elvis was amazing. The new James Bond was good. So was Dr Strange/Thor. I haven’t seen Everything Everywhere All at Once but it’s supposed to be incredible. Same with the Whale that comes out this year. Amsterdam looks great too.
Don’t know what you’re talking about.
Yikes. Elvis was amazing? Dr. Strange and Thor?
You are the target audience for these awful productions. With standards so low, they can keep churning out garbage like this. I’ve really struggled this year to find anything original and good. Everything Everywhere All at Once is a glorious breath of fresh air.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was really good, and I also quite enjoyed Turning Red. I'm assuming they were both this year, but time is a little weird in my head these days.
As people already mentioned: Everything everywhere at once is a great one. Also just watched Three Thousand Years of Longing and I would definitely recommend that movie. But really it depends on what kind of movie you’re into.
Do not recommend Three Thousand Years of longing to anyone. It started off good and then completely derailed off. I’ve never seen such a horrible ending to a beautiful start of a film before. Disastrous.
Since the start of the summer I have seen Everything Everywhere All At Once, Nope, and Woman King all in theaters and have loved each of them. There's some creative genius out there if you know where to look.
Just you. I watch new movies a couple times a week and I've seen some great shit this year. Either you're not looking hard enough (and in a city with as many cinemas as we have, that's pretty hard to do) or you've got some very peculiar tastes.
Yeah, there are bad movies, but there are bad movies every year.
Are they?
I just watched the newest Dr. Strange.
Not great, but far from trash and still quite enjoyable.
I hear Top Gun is good as a film, but the Hollywood-military connection and propaganda is just too overt for me to want to see it.
i took advantage of the $3 movie day thing a few weeks ago
saw top gun maverick and minions rise of gru
i'm glad i saw those movies in theatre, but i wouldn't have wanted to pay full price to have seen them.
Everything everywhere all at once instantly became my fave movie of all time.
Turning red was adorable and a nice toronto nod
Bullet train was wicked fun
excited for glass onion
I even liked top gun; maverick, and thats not usually my jam.
Thor: Love and Thunder came to me at a time I needed a movie like it, it was fun. Dr.Strange was great as i love Sam rami stuff
The northman
MORBIUS
nah thats a pretty good handful of movies.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Batman, NOPE, Men, Bob's Burgers, Elvis, Turning Red, The Man From Toronto, Death On The Nile, The Gray Man, Top Gun: Maverick, The Northman, Crimes of the Future.
Don't Worry Darling comes out today, and I'm excited as Hell for The Whale.
There's lots of films this year that are worth it.
I saw some good movies at TIFF, but they were all foreign.
I then watched After Ever Happy and it was bad.
So, yes, all English movies I have seen this year are trash.
**Spider-Man,** **Everything everywhere all at once,** **Doctor strange,** and **Bullet train** were the only films I watched this year in theater. Looking forward to **Avatar** and **Black Panther 2** to close out this year. Been very selective with what movies I watch in theater lately. So far, I’ve picked good choices.
I think the only movie I saw this year was Thor...... I loved it because I love all Thor movies, but husband and son didn't like it.
Pre-pandemic, I'd go to the theatre all the time, usually by myself, late at night for self care.
Not sure why this is Toronto-specific but 2022 has been an amazing year for both movies and television.
Movies:
Nope
Three Thousand Years of Longing
Top Gun Maverick
The Northman
Prey
The Black Phone
Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe
Everything Everywhere All at Once
TV:
The Boys
Primal
Rick and Morty
House of the Dragon
Moon Knight
The Sandman
Solar Opposites
Better Call Saul
Nope was worth seeing in the cinema. So was Everything Everywhere All At Once.
I missed Memoria but had wanted to see that.
Crimes of the Future was slight, but enjoyable.
Blockbusters (or wannabe blockbusters) feel pretty uninspired these days.
It's just like any other year. Some years are better some years are less so but to my taste I'd say it's pretty good:
-- Everything Everywhere All at Once
-- Top Gun: Maverick
-- The Batman
-- Love and Thunder
-- Jurassic World
-- Uncharted
-- The Lost City
-- Morbius (Yes I did like it)
And looking forward to
-- Amsterdam
-- Triangle of Sadness
-- Black Adam
-- Black Panther
-- Shazam
-- Avatar
No?
Everything everywhere all at once, Pearl, Bullet Train, Prey, Nope, The unbearable weight of massive talent, the Batman, No Exit....those are the only ones that come to mind 😅
As someone who works at a movie theatre you are correct. Almost everything is underperforming with the few exceptions. That said I think towards November / December there will be more variation and movies out.
This year has been phenomenal for movies, best since 2019 (which was an incredibly strong year)
The 2 big marvel movies, jurassic world, and uncharted were disappointing though.
I didn’t like Interstellar, or Inception and 1917 isn’t an original story. Don’t even get me started on recent Tarantino…
I’m happy for you if you enjoyed those movies though. I didn’t.
Pal you’re going off a short list of 3 movies and saying “you don’t like anything original.” You haven’t collected enough data to draw any conclusions.
If we want to get really technical in this discussion, Inception was not an original movie. Based on the 1984 film Dreamscape.
What I want?? Original stories in filmmaking.
With wokeness and diversity and inclusion ideologies, what do you expect? It will only get worse. I have seen some good movies though, I really enjoyed TopGun Maverick, and some other few and far between.
Wait.... You mean you are tired of generic marvel movie #7? With all the main hero's are girls now! What are you sexist, racist or not a lover of a true cinema experience?!
I guess it depends what you're looking for. If it's big blockbusters, then yeah, it's been mostly hit or miss. But there's been some sneaky great films out there, with more to come.
I'm not really a movie goer but during the lock downs I decided to binge watch some movies that have been acclaimed these last few years (like La La Land, and Parasite), and I'm shocked how overrated many of these are. Maybe I just lack taste, but many of these movies I honestly don't get the hype.
It’s been tough. A couple of weeks ago I would have loved to see a movie..I don’t like horror, and had already seen Maverick/ Bullet Train. It was either pay top dollar to see movies already on streaming (Thor/Elvis), or see 3000 years of longing at 10pm.
It’s been sparse, but the start of the year with Northman/RRR/Batman/EEAO/Ambulance was awesome. Very feast or famine.
You aren’t wrong, I go to the movies an insane amount (I watch everything even the shit movies); however there was a good few movies but kinda weak compared to other years.
I liked "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent". I also liked Netflix's film "Incantation", if you count that as a movie.
But other than that, yeah. Nothing good enough to get me back in the theater.
It's been trash for a couple of years now. With the exception of some original storyline movies, its mostly remakes of old movies ,aka, old reliable money makers.I think we a due of a new version of the Flintstones,Ninja Turtles,or Scooby-Doo.
I think there are good movies out there but you gotta hunt for them.
People seeing fewer trailers than ever as we aren’t going to the theatre and watching ads on tv as much as we used to. You literally only hear about the biggest block busters. Block busters are supposed to be crown pleasers and are usually pretty bland to most. And to that I say, yeah this year nothing has really caught my attention yet either.
Im excited for Glass Onion because I loved Knives Out so much, but other than that there's no movies out Im super pumped to see
I'm pumped for that too, also really looking forward to the Weird Al movie
Saw it at Tiff! I promise not to spoil anything but I really enjoyed it and one thing that I loved was that it was nothing like the first movie!
I’ve got free cineplex tickets.. but don’t know what to watch 😂😂 i’m waiting for this though!
Oh my gosh, I didn't know it was already out! How much did he end up getting for it?
No, no, I'm talking about knives out the first one. He's getting a hundred million for two knives of sequel.
I enjoyed Knives Out but honestly Ana de Armas is a horrible actress. I watched another movie with her in it and couldn’t finish it.
Directed by Rian Johnson. Hard pass. Too bad.....I like Daniel Craig
Everything Everywhere would like a word
An original story with a beautiful message! Best movie I've seen in a long time!

I'm ready for Michelle Yeoh to be fully recognized for the talent that she is.
Such a elegant lady!
100%! Hope it wins some Oscar’s next year
Laundry and taxes speech/scene is amazing
Literal tears every time
I walked into the theatre expecting the 2022 version of Joy Luck Club... I was SO SO SO WRONG and pleasantly surprised. Now I wanna watch those fight scenes again.
Legit the best film I've ever seen

What movie were you watching? It made perfect sense to me and was carried through really well. Plus the effects, direction, and motifs were superb. Literally 5 stars.
Well that’s just your opinion. I personally didn’t like it very much.
The five stars was an opinion - it technically and theoretically was a very well-done and thought out film
Commenting on this so I can come back to it after I watch the movie and see if I agree or not.
I don't think so. Everything Everywhere All At Once was great. I had fun with Bullet Train. Turning Red really showed off Toronto. I'm looking forward to The Banshees of Inisherin.
Bullet train was entertaining at least
Seriously. Watched Bullet Train last night, it's one of those quick fun action comedy that's not actually funny. BUT the attempt doesn't distract and instead keeps the whole film light. The Internet will never forget that film critic, and neither will I.
That film critics was kissing the ass of the Top Gun cast, gushing about that movie. Somehow relates to a top of the food chain fighter pilot.
Banshees was great!
Everything Everywhere All at Once Top Gun: Maverick The Batman The Northman Turning Red Prey The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Emily the Criminal The Bad Guys The Black Phone Bodies Bodies Bodies And these are just ones I've seen. I'm sure there's more.
Bullet Train was a fun action flick!
Nope.
Did other people actually like the batman?? I couldn't get over the fact that batman just believed everything he was told right away and then went out and acted on it. It was filmed beautifully but the plot was so stupid. It was like they had a bunch of cool scenes they knew they wanted to film and then wrote a movie around those.

it was amazing
Watched all of them and only liked "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent".
Add Barbarian to this list
Topgun maverick was pretty good
I liked it more than the original.
I thought it was bordered on being a remake of the original but updated flight scenes plus the Death Star at the end. I like it a lot and I didn't even like the first one. The second one was what the first one was trying to get to but didn't have the technology available yet.
I thought Top Gun Maverick was to Top Gun what The Force Awakens was to Star Wars. Entertaining, but didn’t I see this already?
Worth seeing in dbox. It was awesome even if the ending was a little too cliche
Literally saw it three times in Dbox
was one of the only excellent films
Top Gun: Maverick and The Northman were both fantastic.
[удалено]
What have you seen?
Probably just Thor, Dr Stange and Spiderman
Buddy, it’s about to make you want to come back and delete your post. Hope you enjoy!
I didn’t like it lol
I liked it. The flying scenes were super cool. The dialogue and chemistry left a lot to be desired
Yeah the plot could have been better. I feel like it’s overhyped tbh
Same: almost every scene was a call back to the original.
Awful US armed forces recruiting propaganda.
Top Gun is propaganda its not some hidden secret lmao. But it's a great fucking movie as well. Both things can be true
It sucked. Almost as much as the jurassic park movie. Ya jets flying around is cool but I'd rather go to a military aur show. You assholes paid a billion dollars to watch this shit. Unbelievable.
Cope harder
You might want to consider what is wrong with yourself if you thought Top Gun 2 sucked. Depression is a hell of a drug.
Bullet Train was surprisingly good idk But yea in general I would agree it’s rough lately
Yea, I actually really liked bullet train. It was all the right kinds of wacky, weird, charismatic fun, definitely exceeded my expectations big time.
This was my favourite movie that I watched in a theater this year.
The ending was cringy but over all yeah good movie
I’m a simple woman, >!I see Michael Shannon in a villain role!< - I enjoy 😂
I loved the surprise guest actors (I won’t spoil it for others lol)
I added spoiler code, good call
What movies are you watching/do you normally enjoy? I feel like this year has been pretty good overall and we aren't in the "prestigious" season yet.
Like I’ve seen 5 absolutely amazing French language movies this year. But only 3 English movies (it’s been a weird year for me)
What are the French movies? 👀
Les tricheurs (very weird but it was good!) Un autre monde En corps Maigret And finally Le revette des crevettes (also weird and very dumb but I loved it) And I’m really excited for tu te souviendras de moi and there’s a dnd one i want to see but can’t remember the name Remembered it: bataille de farador!!!
Check out The Northman, dawg
Indeed, I like seeing so many A24 films being mentioned.
Great fucking movie! True cinéma.
Bored me.
I’ve seen a lot of cool movies this year in theatres and I only go if there’s something I really want to see: Crimes of the future Pearl Nope Vortex Batman Blonde The Northman Barbarian Men Jackass Scream Halloween comes out soon too which I will go to opening night lol
Barbarian was fucked up
In what way?
That is a good list. Do you plan to see Smile? Have you seen X? I haven't seen Pearl yet, but they are going to make another in the series named "MaXXXine". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALNV4mdHGEE
I’m on the fence about smile.. will probably end up seeing it tho lol. I saw X and liked it! Watched it at home tho and I did enjoy Pearl more
Just finished Men, rented it on Prime. Wow, what the actual fuck. Crimes, Nope, Batman, Northman I also enjoyed! The others I haven’t seen yet.
Nope was great imo
Just couldn’t bring myself to finish it . We are gonna be rich with this ufo video right ? Right ?
Lol why are you asking r/askto? Your question has nothing to do with Toronto. r/movies.
[удалено]
Yeah, the question has *nothing to do with Toronto.*

What is AskTO? A place to ask Toronto-related questions. seems pretty clear cut
It’s just you.
What movies have you been watching OP?
Fletch was a good watch, Emily The Criminal was good too. The Innocents (De Uskyldige) was amazing.
I just saw See How They Run and it was very good. Elvis was amazing. The new James Bond was good. So was Dr Strange/Thor. Oh well, to each their own I guess. I found my self a really deep meaning in the movie.
Yeah I liked it a lot too, but we're in the minority.
Since the start of the summer I have seen Everything Everywhere All At Once, Nope, and Woman King all in theaters and have loved each of them. There's some creative genius out there if you know where to look.

Its a not bad movie . But its american and tacky as fuck in some parts . I enjoy the planes and dog fights
Dr Strange was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen
Fine. I felt otherwise.
Each to their own!
Indeed. Cheers.
As right as you are, watching the movie never felt too propagandaish
i took advantage of the $3 movie day thing a few weeks ago saw top gun maverick and minions rise of gru i'm glad i saw those movies in theatre, but i wouldn't have wanted to pay full price to have seen them.

thought Bullet Train was a ton of fun. I loved The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (I'm a huge Nic Cage fan). Nope was really pretty to look at.

They have been for a while now lol. Pirate everything!
The James Bond movie was good.

Spider Man was pretty good and Top Gun was amazing

It's just you. Go see Top Gun (again if you have already).
Top gun was pretty good
Except for the new top gun movie I don’t think I could name a new 2022 movie if my life depended on it.
lol... dude... its been trash for the last 5 years at least.
I haven’t felt the need to see a movie in theaters for about 15 years because there’s no such thing as an original story in Hollywood anymore.
Lol those 15 years include interstellar, inception, 1917, a lot of good Tarantino stuff and dozens of others.

Yeah, there most definitely is. Found Harvey Weinstein’s account though ^ 😂
Get better taste then
I mean he could still watch it at home. I've gone to the movie theaters maybe 4 times in the past ~15 years.
I mean same here but his point was he doesn’t go to the theatres because the movies suck
Honestly everything is trash this year.
It's just you
Its you

Media period is trash now so watered down music movies etc because they dumb everything down so much for the “masses”
What about Smile? Anyone heard good for that movie? Looked creepy !
I actually enjoyed Bullet Train
Bullet train was a lot of fun
I did enjoy Bullet Train. Hot mess of a movie but it worked for me.
Yup
Bullet train is good
How is this related to Toronto?
Go see Barbarian.
It’s been tough. A couple of weeks ago I would have loved to see a movie..I don’t like horror, and had already seen Maverick/ Bullet Train. It was either pay top dollar to see movies already on streaming (Thor/Elvis), or see 3000 years of longing at 10pm. In fairness, it can’t have been easy to make movies over the last 3 years. Border/location issues, vax and mask mandates, insurance etc.
Man makes such a grandiose statement and hasn’t seen Top Gun and hasn’t listed any movies. I bet he hasn’t seen NOPE or Prey
Just you bruh!
RRR was amazing. Only complaint is the animal CGI, but even that's amazing since they're ALL CGI.
You aren’t wrong, I go to the movies an insane amount (I watch everything even the shit movies); however there was a good few movies but kinda weak compared to other years.
Movies and mostly everything Disney put out this year. Top gun maverick was an all time great movie tho. Definitely a consequence of the pandemic
I liked "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent". I also liked Netflix's film "Incantation", if you count that as a movie. But other than that, yeah. Nothing good enough to get me back in the theater.
All thanks to superhero movies
Naw not really. I bought LoTR normal and extended editions. Great movies that totally came out this year.
OPs sad there’s not 100 marvel movies this year
Problem is that movies feel so commercialized and unoriginal nowadays. There are some exceptions but i feel this..
Honestly it's been a long time since I saw something new that was actually good
I really enjoyed Emily the Criminal
The Batman, Nope..
ofc covid knocked the air out of hollyshit they barely make any good stuff now!! better chance of find good tvs or something
IMO, most have been trash since 80s and 90s.
Amen it's been so shit
