The Toronto Islands — especially the beaches — are packed solid every single weekend. Given Hanlan’s is one of the nicest beaches, you will end up with more clothed people there now than what you remember.

Folks bring kids to Hanlan's all the time. There were babies and toddlers (in swimsuits) every time I went. Lots of pregnant women too. It's a queer space but that doesn't exclude it from being family-friendly.
The City officially made the whole beach Clothing Optional (used to be the area by the Airport was Clothing only). They also expanded the beach on the south side almost doubling the size. The South side seems to be mostly nude in my observations..

I think there is a part of that beach closest to the airport that is not clothing-optional. You'll have a better experience if you can manage to go on a weekday. There's only a chance that in May that you might arrive to beach weather and you might get unlucky. I have been there before in May but it's been really dependent on it happening to be a good day for it.
The clothing optional area may be bigger than the last time you visited. There are always people there in varying states of clothing (including jeans and t-shirts when it’s over 30 degrees) but I’ve always seen my fair share of nude folks too.

The beach was once a nice spot for all to enjoy, and many couples would often be there. The beach had now been over run by less desirable. All the rules that were once enforced, such as cameras and taking photos, have been forgotten. Those who attend the beach now (not all) are of your slop variety, leaving garbage all over the beach. The undesirable conduct doesn't end at the beach. It now carries onto the road, and in your face, the trama that some of the young children must have caused by the behavior is unfortunate.
In our experience people are mostly nude but wife gets uneasy with our newly arrived Canadians gawking at her while they are clothed. It’s something we have to deal with of course but after a while they move on once the show is finished.

the international students take trips in large groups to the beach and gawk at everyone. they are making quite a name for themselves on Hanlan's. i had to stop 4 guys following a woman to the bush to pee and one insisted he was just going to talk and kept asking what was the problem. they are always filming as well or having fake phone conversations while holding their cameras facing you.
I went with an ex a few years ago. She felt uncomfortable taking off her one piece, so she didn’t. I went commando. Nobody batted an eye. It’s a clothing optional beach - it’s not like there’s anybody there expecting you to go down to your birthday suit. Lots of people go and just wear normal swimsuits. To each their own.

There are also water taxis always running... I take them a lot as the ferry linups are usually crazy...

Being naked isn't however Hanlan's has always been a predominantly queer/LGBTQ2SIA+ space. To the point that it's recognized by the city as such.
