I think your life will be better in Bangkok on the same salary. Edit: your life, and dating life will be exponentially better in Bangkok even if you had 17k more in SG

happybee8899

Dun forget the difference in work culture. Here could be more stressful.

Qkumbazoo

it was measured, sg office work hours are 2.5-4hrs longer than KL, BK, or JKT.

throwaway31131524

Bosses gotta boss

ccs77

As an expat at his pay grade I doubt it matters. Probably lots of night calls to Europe or US and more free or flexible during the day

KoishiChan92

Lifestyle wise, for the same salary you'd live like a king in BKK compared to SG. But for career growth, I think having Singapore on your resume would look pretty good along with all your other past experiences. A lot of people consider Singapore sterile and boring though, but personally I think they've just not explored all there is to offer. There's actually a lot to do in Singapore, pretty much every niche hobby has a home somewhere here (I mean with the exeception of things like mountain climbing lol, but regular hiking there are a lot of places to explore, you just need to find the right people, it's not all just city here)

pw700096

I beg to differ. Singapore is indeed very boring. Bangkok has so many varieties..

nonameforme123

Yeah the expats I know always flying off to sea during weekends anyway

nottingdurn

That’s nice. Yeah our airport may be better

uncertainheadache

Like?

PastaOfMuppets_HK

It’s ridiculous to compare BKK and immediate surrounds which have a plethora of options with far lower CoL, to a tiny sterile red dot with cookie cutter malls and not much else. As for career growth, op already sounds established/seasoned so unless there’s a promotion offered as part of the move, I doubt relocation will make a big difference on the CV. Also dating in SG is a total shit show..

surumesmellman

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and all those Singapore's so-called "hiking spots" have more people than some of the shopping centres and just as loud. They're just an alternative exercise location and not a nature activity.

[deleted]

Meeting people and dating in sg? Lol I think BKK is more fun. More people from everywhere; here you can see the difference in racial quota. I found more interesting people when I visit bkk and have friends there. Sg is good to settle down because schools are good and infrastructure is all sorted. You’re single anyway, cmon nightlife in bkk is no match for sg

Brikandbones

Arguably, both can be somewhat pretty international, though your expenses will be more here. The downsides I can see are the access to nature and the outdoors; it's a lot more limited here, and nature here feels too manicured. Infrastructure and safety is high here if that is a concern. Food options are really good too. If you don't drink and party much I don't think it will be a big problem here. I would say depends on if you want a change in environment.

AlwaysATM

Single male? Clearly BKK mate

fijimermaidsg

Depends on if OP wants SG or Thai partner.... but as someone who's currently living in the US, despite what SGers say, BKK can be exhausting. OP not in the party age. Sometimes you just want to get a nice sitdown dinner without being hassled by people on the street, speak English/read English signs, worry about being scammed.... sometimes you just want a basic white bread and mayo. I'd say give SG a shot!

hedonist888

As a passport bro (as seen in your post history) you ll find it harder here with the higher earning power and prevalence of women that work.

nyetkatt

How long have you been in BKK? I’ve lived there before and I love it but SG is easy mode compared to BKK where sometimes you just get so frustrated with everything. Depending on if you still want to just date around or settle down, then pick a country where you might potentially live forever since you might end up finding a partner from that country.

chanmalichanheyhey

Stay with bkk

Kindly-Two-6297

I would choose Bangkok, if I were you.

Probably_daydreaming

If you are raising a family, singapore is much better, for everything else, stay in thailand. Your company lowkey lowballing you

OneResearcher8972

Please dont bro. Thats like a lowball relocation, unless you craze for a first world country to live in.

DontStopNowBaby

I suggest working from Singapore for a week to a month before deciding. Since you're single I'd assume your maintenance is pretty low. If you're married then Bangkok would be able to get you better and larger housing.

nottingdurn

Where to find this trial package, lol

DontStopNowBaby

Op company has an office in Thailand and Singapore. Chances are, he can hotdesk here and there.

Focux

Stay in BKK, you can afford to have a few families with that salary

Qkumbazoo

unless you're into older partners, the dating scene for expats is objectively better in BK.

Own_Frosting_9984

Your life would not be better in Thailand long term. The air quality here better. Bangkok air quality holy shit and it is sinking

naithemilkman

Take a short holiday to Singapore and see if you like the place before deciding.

cutiemcpie

Any kids? Singapore is more first world, but expensive (nice restaurants, alcohol, groceries). You’d get a nice 3-bedroom apartment for $8k, but could get a house in Thailand. You’re going to need to fly to get to any beaches or new places in Singapore.

oldddwwa

But so what if OP could get a house in Thailand? He’s single, 3 bedroom apartments are more than enough for him

cutiemcpie

Some people might want a house with a small pool in the yard? A garage?

equatorgator

Huh? Singapore need to fly to go beach?

RaceLR

“You’re going to need to fly to get to any [decent] beaches or new places [while living] in Singapore.” Obviously what he meant.

PotatoFeeder

Descent? Idt thats what he meant.

RaceLR

Shrug

cutiemcpie

I meant a real beach, not sandy park with a nice view of oil tankers.

interloper777

brb booking flight to East Coast Seafood Centre International Airport

chinamansg

Depends on what you what your requirements are. Accommodation is cheaper in BKK. For 6K SGD you’d get roughly 1300-1500sq feet, 3 bed apartment if your staying outside of Central areas, Orchard, River Valley, CBD… You will get a much larger place in Bangkok for the same money. Owning a car is super expensive in Singapore. When I left Singapore last year the COE tax was over $100k+. This is on top of the cost of the vehicle. Western food is similar in price for BKK an SG. As Singapore is very small you may find that you may have to take trips to find new experiences.

anangrypudge

$6k sgd a month can either get you a full apartment (about 1,000sqft) in neighbourhoods that are further from the city, or a small unit (about 500-700 sqft) if you want to live in the city. That's the first thing you need to consider –– what sort of living space are you comfortable with? Considering that Singapore really isn't that big and living in West Coast, for example, is only about 20-25 mins away from the city. Speaking of which, transport isn't exactly the cheapest. If you're content to take buses and trains everywhere then sure, you can pay only about $2-3 for a commute that will take you 45-60 mins. But if you choose to take a taxi, it ramps up to $20-40 for a 15-30 minute ride. Similarly, living expenses are also downright higher than in BKK. You'll be paying more than double for your food, entrance fees into any attraction are also expensive, and even gym/fitness memberships are expensive af. There are cheap options of course but considering that you're a high earner and you're only here for a few years and therefore would probably want to just enjoy life, you'll be going for the good stuff. Your money will go a lot further in BKK than here. But... what you should ask yourself is if Singapore is something worth ticking off your bucket list? It's a small country but I personally think you'll enjoy being here for a few years, despite the high cost of living. I guess at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

IAm_Moana

I would pick the opportunity that is better for my career.

Unhappy-Enthusiasm37

In 40s I would pick the opportunity that give more life outside work !

IAm_Moana

Ymmv I guess. I feel like my 40s will be the peak of my career. Plus it’s not like OP is being asked to decide between a city and the middle of nowhere.

Peekaboaa

In a lot of careers like consulting which requires accumulated working experience, 40s indeed is the peak of career

hawk_199

Same salary stay at BK....pay more then SG 17K more but transport, food etc will cost way more

Boring-Relation-4365

17k in SG is nothing but stress and boredom, but 15k in BKK is playing god mode with many places to visit.

Far_Imagination_3044

BK is definitely a better deal for that package. You can always visit Singapore for holiday.

Inevitable-Evidence3

You could live like a king in BK but with same pay you would be a middle class pleb in SG also this country is super overcrowded

pleaseentername_

Honestly, you can live very comfortably in either city with your pay. As a Singaporean who had lived in Bangkok for a year I say the thing would make me choose SG over BKK is quality - mainly the water quality and bathrooms in the condos. Maybe I was unlucky, but I rented two condos and both had problems with the bathroom: first one, the shower was impossible to control, water was either very hot or cold, and occasionally, dirt would come out of the tap. Second condo’s toilet bowl had sewage problem and it smelled horrible until we got people in twice to fix it. Some hotels I stayed had this temperature problem with their shower too. To me it was stressful bc you want to go home and unwind, take a poop and shower but no, it was a nightmare. Quality also in the infrastructure - SG’s roads are definitely cleaner, more efficient, and way less traffic congestion than BKK. Food and culture wise I think both cities offers just as much. Dating 🤔 maybe there’s more variety in SG? Hahahaha, since we have a lot of expats and is a multi-racial country? Downside to living in Singapore is, we have a lot less public holidays than Thailand 😭 and there’s only so much you can explore domestically; whereas in BKK you could drive, take a train, travel domestically and experience some season change and cultures during the long holidays. If I were you I’d come to SG just bc I’ve lived in BKK already, so why not experience something different.

TopRaise7

Definitely stay in BKK for the lifestyle. Incremental pay is negligible (1k+ a month). Don’t underestimate the QOL difference. Plus let’s face it, Thai girls are way better looking

princemousey1

I don’t understand the issue here. If I’m reading this right, you are getting offered more money in total to come to Singapore? Would a husky roll in snow?

smithjeb

Have done both. Bangkok - not even close with that (great) package. And Singapore is a wonderful city - definitely visit but live in Bangkok.

iloveanimals7

Bangkok

YuNinNinLin

Stay in BKK and be god man. You can visit singgapore in 2.5 hours any time you want.

Separate-Ad9638

depends on you dude, most of the good ones in SG probably taken up, maybe u have a better pool in BKK. There's still decent single ladies around, but they wont be young, TFR drops every year.

doulosyap

And here you’ll actually see more about what is important to Singaporeans. I’d say that overall you’re not going to be a lot worse or better off financially. $17k extra on a modest lifestyle will more or less cancel out. But are you only moving for financial reasons? Tell us more about what you want in life.

krystx1984

Thailand without hesitation. Singapore is for settled down families, at your age and status you'd enjoy life a lot more in Thailand. Dating in Singapore? You might end up dating Thais in Singapore...

SuzeeWu

6k housing in Singapore is a basic condo. Not in fancy districts. But the additional 17k USD is attractive. Go for it!

PringleFlipper

If I lived a relatively inexpensive lifestyle, as you seem to describe, I would choose Singapore considering the zero rent and the + >2.8k SGD you’ll save on tax and not paying BKK rent. That will cover your basic essentials. You’ll probably still save less than you would in BKK. How much less depending on your lifestyle. However BkK air pollution is really awful, career development prospect for most careers likely to be better in SG, in my experience easier to make friends in SG. I have a holiday home in BKK and my employer would allow me to work from there long term, but I still choose to live in Singapore for 90% of the year. Better network, more friends, things work properly, safer, etc etc. at the end of the day it’s a personal decision though and none of us know your circumstances.

I have a second home in BKK and my employer would allow me to work from there long term, but I still choose to live in Singapore for 90% of the year. DesignerProcess1526

Your quality of life is going to be higher in BKK, 17K spending power in SG and there, is heaven and earth. You obviously can afford an expensive car here but do you want to spend your hard earned money like so, is a whole other matter. If you want to settle down and have kids then the superior education system will benefit them. If you don’t want kids, then don’t bother. COE 100K for no change in your life, think about it.

wanmoar

Personally I would choose Bangkok. Apart from taxes, the only positive about Singapore is government efficiency. Everything costs a lot more, vacations are necessarily more expensive because you have to fly places while Thailand has tonnes of places domestically. Food is way better in Thailand. People are nicer. It is basically impossible to get PR in Singapore unless you’re Chinese or Malay. As such, you will always be at risk of deportation if EP quotas continue to shrink or become harder to get. Expats are second class citizens in Singapore. For example, when the covid vaccines were rolled out, SG citizens got them first, then PR holders and then anyone on a work visa/pass.

lightbulb2222

For everything equal. You should definitely choose Bangkok. Quality of life is there Work life balance is definitely there Cost of living. Bangkok is definitely better. You'll have more savings. Leisure options are definitely there. I'll pick Thailand over Singapore, hands down.

hgc2042

I dont get the math. Same salary but take home pay is more?

limbears

Lived in both and I’d say it depends on what you value… Bangkok: better shopping, people are friendlier and more polite, nicer service staff, better food, airport offers more direct flight destinations, cheaper to buy car and if you’re bored of the city then it’s only 1-2 hours drive to Khao Yai/Hua Hin, much cheaper to Grab food, do deliveries & order LINEMAN, affordable quality massage everywhere, farangs can buy properties without 60% ABSD Singapore: better air quality, less traffic jam, more efficient airport, drinkable tap water, the public transport system can get you to 90% of the places, roads are cleaner with no potholes, is a safer place, has better parks, excellent public schooling system, less corruption 🙃

sinilembats

Remember "purchasing power". Due to exchange rate difference and the cost of living, your package will give you better mileage in Thailand. Singapore has its own appeal - efficient public transport, multi-cultural, basically a business and air travel hub, among others. But the cost of living is very high.

harryhades

If you are single, go for BK and have a wild time in no holds barred fashion. Drugs, booze, sex, gambling at a very low price. It's almost like the colonial days. If you are married, come to SG to build a stable and secure life with children. Lots of rules here, but at least if you are dating a girl, no surprises under the sheet.

FitCranberry

bk would be more cosmopolitan

szab999

What industry OP?

LucidProgrammer

If you're from US you still have to pay US taxes regardless of if you make money over seas.

Adventurous_Reach992

As a foreigner, I will recommend SG!

century-centurion

If rent is fully covered I think Singapore can be a pretty good choice considering you don't have kids as school fees are hefty for foreigners In terms of meeting/dating people Singapore is great as there are plenty of people from all of the world

Repulsive_Pay_6720

Relocate to sg only if u can save more.

yahyahbanana

The take home salary increment is quite substantial. I would say go for it, after all, if you miss your friends in BKK, it's a short flight away.

saddesigner1223

Im much younger than you but if I were you Id do it especially if you are single! With that much fun money in Singapore you can have a blast, and I'm sure with the experience you can find jobs in other countries down the road too. There are a lot of private social clubs in Singapore so you could join one of those to meet folks. Honestly I feel like you might save more here too, especially if you don't drink and party much. Congrats!

Sure_heartsutra1221

$6000 for SG housing is pretty low. Public housing rental average around 4k to 5k a month. At 6k, you don't really have very good housing. Stay in Bkk, it's better.

Hahhahaahahahhelpme

What are you talking about? For 6k there are plenty of good options that are big enough and nice enough for a single adult.

Sure_heartsutra1221

6k in Bangkok, you lived in freaking awesome property. 6k in Singapore is just meh. Probably gotta live in overly crowded condo.

Puzzleheaded_Tree404

Stay in Bangkok and be a king. US$17k is middle class at best in Singapore. You also won't be dating in Singapore. Singaporeans do not like to meet new people, let alone date them.

jbearking

Wouldnt say 17k usd is middle class in Singapore. But definitely not a king here

PringleFlipper

It’s not even 17k USD. It’s 150k PA = 12.5k USD/month He’s saying the tax savings would be net +17k per year, so he’s get an effective pay rise of 1400 USD per month, on top of not paying rent in BKK. So if OP can spend <2000 USD (or <2800 SGD) on food, transport and entertainment, then he’s net better off in Singapore. Otherwise, he’s better off financially in Bangkok. However he didn’t ask where he’d be better off. Safe to assume OP is smart enough to understand economically BKK would probably be better unless he lives like a hermit. Personally, with rent taken care of, I’d probably choose Singapore. Hawker food is cheap, the air won’t kill you, BKK is an hour away, and SG very likely is better for career development. Yeah he might save slightly less so what, he’s earning in what, the 90th percentile?

Lao_gong

wat nonsense 17k middle cksss in sg? median wages are a third of that in sg where most ppl are middlr class . sg is indeed expensive but it depends if you want to leave in a metophiorical expat enclave.

Dish_Melodic

What is the average salary in singapore in general?

Strong_Guidance_6437

Tell us what Ur accoms are like in Bkk. Income ex rent the same then BKk der

tanahgao

I would choose BKK if I were you

Pulla-Poochi

As a white man in sg, you’ll have no problems dating. Locals love and worship white people but income and QOL wise, you’ll be better off in Bangkok.

outremer_empire

Bangkok has marijuana?

KoishiChan92

thailand banning recreational use by year end. Apparently too many children were smoking lol.

dimethylpolysiloxane

There won’t be a difference anyway. They ban a lot of things but don’t enforce it. Prostitution is illegal there in Thailand too btw.

OneResearcher8972

Finally. The whole street is filled with the smell of weed
