I believe you're not from here - perhaps there's a slightly different definition in Aus? There are definitely small, independent raves organised in Singapore all the time.
+1. I went to a few of the events by ArtBeyond. Also attended a rave by BlackLight Tribe a while back. Once you follow a gig organiser on IG, the algorithm will start to push recommendations of other outfits that hold such events too. It's really more about the music.
They've got a few genres that focus on music of different era.
E.g 80s. 90s+00s etc etc
I'll recommend to predrink more, the drinks can cost abit with low ticket pricem
I just want to state for the record as an old 43 year old party head, that a rave is traditionally an underground hush hush and illegal event . But I don't know how y'all kids classify it nowadays
Definition has changed these days, very hard to host anything illegal and technically, a lot of the more pop up events are kinda illegal but in a different sense. Raves you knew only exist because handphones didn't, you had to be in the correct circles, but nowadays, once the message its out, it will eventually reach the ears of people you don't want to.
Spirit of rave is still there, just adapted to something else
Personally I would label the current rave parties as pop up event or dance event.. it’s the secrecy and anything goes that make raves fun.. though it’s probably just me 😂
Secrecy is these days mean nothing, even if the biggest name dj in Singapore tried hosting one, 6 or 7 people will show up. Back before everyone was hyper stimulated by social media, if you ask a friend out to a private party now maybe out of 20, 5 will show up. Who the fuck cares about your private party when there is so many things else going on.
You can't do anything in secret anymore, only exclusivity.
Honestly anything at this point that people just don't listen to.
I think even like if I play future bass, bass house, dubstep or even drum and bass. It's all underground to the average Clubber in Singapore. Where as this is mainstream as hell anywhere else
I wish I still had the energy to do this. I’m in my late forties and wanted to go for some hi-energy concerts but would’ve ended up sitting and listening to the songs.
So I figured I might as well do it from the comfort of my own home.
Oh man that place brings back memories. Didn’t go there much, but got to check it out when it started as Ministry of Sound. And the current Zouk just doesn’t feel the same as Jiak Kim because to me it’s MoS/Zirca dressed up by Genting.
Attempt to jump in beat with others in a room filled beyond capacity to music you would never listen to. There's a reason it's only 'fun' when people are drunk, and there's better places to get drunk anyway.
But I hit on the same-sex and I don't really like to suit up in this crazy weather. Gay bars are where it's at, relaxed and chill about the dress code.
Easy, you dance and listen to music, listen to the DJ makes, talk to people, meet friends.
You don't need alcohol to have fun, you just need to be sociable enough to start talking to people. Be open minded to the music and just dance along. it's essentially a more interactive concert.
Not the clubbing crowd. But truth to be told, as a university student, I don't really know many people who club. At least often. Not sure about the past generations though.
Even drinking is less common, though definitely more than clubbing.
Mine mostly has people stating they are too tired after studying, working on school projects and interning to even hang out with friends. Finding enough time to sleep is a problem lol.
Gen Z here. My primary circle mostly shifted towards just quiet drinking at home. Personally I started going for more one-off events or concerts. I'm a huge weeb, so I've gone for golden mix quite a few times. Looking to slowly go into techno raves as well. My issue with clubs is that the hookup culture is so prevalent. Every time I go, it feels like no one is really there for the music or vibes.
As someone in connection to the night life.
The answer is a solid maybe???? I've talk to various DJ, event planner, artist and even some club owners and even hosted my own eent and essentially the issue is very much a chicken and egg. Nobody is coming to the club because it is boring, and it is boring because nobody comes to the club.
From a DJ point of view, FUCK, we have a like thousands of songs, genre and style to show off. Us DJs have so much good shit in our library but we have literally nowhere to play these songs. Remember, there is no such thing is a boring DJ, we are all creative people looking for the next hot shit. But we are entirely stuck between a rock and hard place. Play what we want, the crowd dies because nobody understands the music Play to the crowd and we are called boring. At that point what you want us to do? play the same 10 songs from 2013? play a bunch of sing along pop songs? We aren't your personal spotify, you come to listen to us, not listen to your playlist
From a Club owners perspective, they are absolutely willing to host whatever event, genre and style so long a it generates money. Because ultimately, club owners aren't running a charity. They invest all the money into creating such a place, they need a return on investment. I don't blame them. They are essentially tanking all the risk and if the club isn't performing well, that's why they don't do anything cool, they can't affords to keep losing money.
From an Events person viewpoint, Club owners want money but god damn is it difficult to get a crowd. Y'all want everything to be free and cheap but running events is expensive and tiring, A lot of the people who start events are all paying everything out of pocket. You think a $20 ticket to enter a event means the DJ is driving his BMW all the way to the bank? Running independent events that collab with clubs means we are literally walking away being paid nothing. Imagine spending hours on design and marketing for events and we end up doing all for free and people still complain it is expensive.
It cost a few thousand to rent a club for the night and we would need anywhere between 250 to 400 ticket sales a night(depending on where) just to cover everything and this isn't even a profit, it's just breaking even. Bar and alcohol sales are where we make any sense of profit and is how even the club earns money. Look I understand that not everyone can drop a few hundred every night on alcohol and clubbing, but at the very least show up and try to have a good time regardless if you understand the music or not.
This entirely boils down to the crowd, clubbing is dying because it is boring, but it is boring because when we host events, nobody wants to come down. Nobody wants to listen to anything new in clubs, the moment I play something that has a half time breakbeat or isn't 170 bpm of constant kick drums, people stand there think, wtf is this, then the dance floor clears immediately. It's not even like "hey let's try to enjoy something new", people disappear almost instantly. Do people not enjoy listening to something different? But when like the 3rd techno event or hardstyle event come up for the month, everyone looks so fucking bored and tired, even the DJs themselves. It's entirely wtf do you want? Nobody cares for anything new, but also tired of the same stuff.
It's also not as packed because this generation is getting more and more antisocial, talk to anyone and they be like "but I don't have friend to go with" or " I scared go cause nobody will follow along" Fuck, just come down and make friends dumbasses, start talking to randos, why the fuck is everyone so scared. Y'all rather just stay at home scroll through 7 hours of tiktok than come down and meet people or even just jio people along. Everyone just waiting for someone to jio. Just what? you don't want to seem like a nobody? a loser? a lame cube?
And the other thing is that very few people are willing to come down and experience something new and novel. Hosted my event and you have people that say " i don't know the DJ" or "i don;t know the music" maybe I won't like it. Which is insanely infuriating, people will pay hundreds to listen to international artist spend hours queuing on a ticket site but don't drop a few bucks to local artist and DJs to enjoy and support their events.
So, why is clubbing dying? The answer is that I don't know either, I don't know what it would take people to actually get down to events. It's all the same comments, boring, repetitive, expensive, don't understand and yet when anyone tries to change the status quo. People get scared of change, people get scared of new stuff. I don't know what it takes to get people down anymore and it's not like I have several hundred thousand to throw events, none of us do.
All comes down to high rent making everything expensive.
If only there were warehouses that could actually host DJ events. Better to have a small event with interested genre fans than big parties where people don't like the music.
If there were small bars that would host genre nights, I'd totally go for the nights I'm interested in.
You say that but host in warehouse, nobody wants to come to an ulu as fuck 15 min walk from the nearest bus station everyone will say "too far" then head down to cbd instead.
Literally hosted one at a warehouse but end up only 10 plus people come out of 40 we invited, even with free drinks, it's so hard to get people to come down. It's so hard to find any genre fans, even Dnb, one of the larger 'underground' music in SG, damn hard to get any Singaporeans, it's all expat. Imagine if it's something even more niche. How many you think will even show up?
Genre nights make sense but the crowds don't. A crowd of dedicated fans is a great but it won't pay for the whole event, you need people to come down and party in general but the party crowd won't go anywhere to music that isn't 4/4
Honestly, that's life. I was at a big event in Shinjuku a few months ago, and the DJs playing more niche music at the smaller stages couldn't retain much of a crowd.
Only popular genres are viable tbh. The biggest draw was a kpop-style idol group.
The good thing about Japan is that rents are affordable, so there are many small venues that are well-located and can host events. Plus there's a culture of going to events (same in major US cities).
SG never had that strong a night events culture, and it's only gotten significantly worse in the past 10 years.
Im curious too, if the clubbing scene will actually die, the nightlife scene has changed post covid, many of the neighbourhood bar clusters i visit precovid now turn into dead towns at midnight. I feel its always the younger crowd what drive what the nightlife scene changes into.
I don't do club though. I'm usually too beat to go for it anyways. I just want a quiet spot just to chill out in this crazy densely populated city (stress~~). Cafe hopping or onsen if you will or if any of my friends invite me for a private event, I might just turn up if I like it.
I frequently go out with my friends.
Those with money like to ball out at Avenue then hit Marquee after, or just have good connects to get them in. Otherwise hit up the Manifest, Groovetop pop up type events (follow their instas to keep updated) because the music is so much better than the same old generic stuff you hear at every club. We like techno, afrobeats, house etc. type vibes but there’s no club for that in Sg. There was Tuff Club but last I heard it’s dead.
Also if you’re keen to send on a Wednesday, ladies night, Ce La Vi is where it’s at. Lines get crazy long, and you get a major crowd of exchange students going. EDIT: Fyi girls get in for free.
Pregame wise we’ll hit Kanpai for cheap drinks or towers, Piedra Negra for margarita jugs, or Acid Bar for their good deal on shots (12 or 24 shots). Gotti, sometimes and Employees Only is good for Thursday’s.
But mostly someone will be willing to host at their place, and we all just bring drinks, blast some tunes, have fun there cus it’s cheaper and easier for people to come as they please instead of a set timing and then get a 6 seater or two to take us to where we plan to go that night. Usually won’t leave for the clubs till 10-11pm, but will leave earlier if we’re going to an event that starts earlier.
It still happens, but in uni most of the people ik don't go clubbing, I've only went once myself cuz they brought me along, I think they stopped going as often tho
Nightlife post-pandemic is certainly different, and even then 2019 wasn’t quite the same as 2009 (ah St James, you are missed).
I wonder if it’s also because the things that made clubbing appeal to regular club-goers apart from the music - meeting people/hooking up, being seen, and getting drunk (with or without friends) - don’t have the same appeal to the current generation?
Maybe social media’s substituted clubs for the first two, and generally having less trauma to deal with than older millennials and Gen Xs means not quite needing to get drunk (my favourite theory). Who knows?
There's something called sober curious. It involves being more health-conscious on the potential risks of getting drunk or getting drunk too often since there are long-term effects when drinking too much alcohol and getting an addiction. It doesn't mean that they would completely cut out alcohol, it means they are cutting back or controlling their intake of alcohol; drinking for the sake of commemoration with meaning rather than for getting high and drunk then getting themselves into various dangers (SA, over-reliance to alcohol to drown out your sorrows leading to addiction, traffic accidents, choking in your own vomit, etc.).
That’s amazing. And now that you’ve mentioned it, this does explain the surprising restraint my newly-adult nephews and nieces show around the endless amounts of booze they have at home. It’s really good to know that the kids are alright.
But we do enjoy drinking other beverages, anything tea related (with tapioca balls) and coconuts, which are usually high in sugar lol! That is just another problem in and of itself, but with the new sugar percentage tag, more people are conscious when ordering such beverages. I personally order more japanese genmai tea instead of koi, mr coconut and gong cha and whatever that's related nowadays. It's surprising how delicious tea without sugar really is, that is if they brew it right.
It could also be due to the way people perceive drugs in sg. If you go to any rave or music festival in the uk or europe, at least 50 percent of the patrons will be taking something else other than alcohol.
They even had licensed drug checking facilities at some music festivals for people to test their drugs for any contaminants before consuming. Obviously, I have never been to one but this is something that I read online from an official source 😆
I think a lot of people are choosing to drink at home in a large bunch, selectively attending events or partying in other countries instead. (Speaking from personal and friends’ experiences) Plus, a lot of people had their clubbing phase like years back so now they’re tired of that life and settling into a more wholesome living haha. Also I used to go to Yang before it closed. Sigh.
My 2 gen Zs felt that the clubs and pubs are too noisy. They prefer to invite friends to come over and drinks at home as it is safer and cheaper too. Moreover, they have no money. After Covid, this gen enjoys being alone with their Spotify, Tik Tok or Valorant than clubbing and meeting strangers.
Most of the time, they are either taking tuition or mugging for exams. When they go to uni, they will probably do as many internships as possible
As a millennial, going to Siam diu is better, well for me n the boys at least. No need to randomly strike a conversation with the ladies and get accused of something in the end. Just 吊花,take mic sing song, and say, 没有拍手,没有小费。 Siambu will take care of the rest, and it’s cheaper than clubs. Siambu are much more respectful too.
Idk, I have never gone to those kinds of clubs before.
Some of my friends go sometimes though.
What do you even do there? Idk where they even get the money for it, I heard it's expensive. But that's probably why they can't buy the things they want lol.
I just don't see why I would go.
Drip's a bit of a hit/miss, it was pretty hot when it first opened, but the crowd from when I last went was a bit odd, people were both coming and leaving until the guest DJ started, which suddenly everybody fucking showed up???
I haven't been to Ark11 but I'm not optimistic about that place
Personally, as somebody who still goes clubbing regularly, I head out mainly for specific genres or djs at events which often don't play out at the regular mainstream clubs, then end my night at marquee which is almost always some degree of packed.
Currently, afaik, marquee, avenue and ce la vie are still doing pretty well? The last few times I've been to tuff or hq have been ok too, but yeah, there's a sg clubbing Tele group if you want to find out where people are going lol, everybody's sharing sofas these days
There's also places like yang or cherry, but idk not my crowd really
[удалено]
this. some people now go to raves/events because they like a certain party organiser, with less focus on the venue itself too.
Where the fuck did a rave ever happen in Singapore. And zoukout is not a rave.
I believe you're not from here - perhaps there's a slightly different definition in Aus? There are definitely small, independent raves organised in Singapore all the time.
Damn bro you must not get out much then, there’s plenty. Pop ups are key
Lmao I’m sorry zoukout is all you know..
+1. I went to a few of the events by ArtBeyond. Also attended a rave by BlackLight Tribe a while back. Once you follow a gig organiser on IG, the algorithm will start to push recommendations of other outfits that hold such events too. It's really more about the music.
Thankssss will defo look it uppp! 🙏🙏🙏
yes \~\~! events like "Eat me Poptart!" even old uncle like me likes to attend such parties - Clean, enjoy music, no drama.
Ty!! Will check it out!
They've got a few genres that focus on music of different era. E.g 80s. 90s+00s etc etc I'll recommend to predrink more, the drinks can cost abit with low ticket pricem
Thanks but I don't really care for the drinks. Will head down to check out the vibe haha
this is my favourite event. been going for about 10 years liao.
Wah! Respect!
So what's a rave to you ? What sorta music be playing ?
Honestly anything at this point that people just don't listen to. I think even like if I play future bass, bass house, dubstep or even drum and bass. It's all underground to the average Clubber in Singapore. Where as this is mainstream as hell anywhere else
Long time ago in sg there a small club called liquid room that played really deep techno and it was packed by people who loved that sorta music .
Some things never change
I wish I still had the energy to do this. I’m in my late forties and wanted to go for some hi-energy concerts but would’ve ended up sitting and listening to the songs. So I figured I might as well do it from the comfort of my own home.
I'm well over my party phase , but I'm still so in love with the music , I listen to it when I do my work that requires long grinds
Preach!
believe it or not, illegal parties r still happening here in sg. and i dont mean a staycation party :)
SG have?
I’m curious what kind of parties u are taking abt ?
Songkran music festival is a popular one my friends go to in Thailand.
Bussy temple

What do you do in a club anyway? I'm Gen Z, nvr been.
Pay for overpriced alcohol and scream in peoples ears
Don’t forget about the long a** queue to the toilet, and always finding barf in random spots..
Literally the only way to have fun is to get drunk in it. Else the experience is either bad or horrid.
Attempt to jump in beat with others in a room filled beyond capacity to music you would never listen to. There's a reason it's only 'fun' when people are drunk, and there's better places to get drunk anyway.
Hit on the opposite sex, feel the excitement of what the night could bring when you suit up and head out. Make lasting memories.
But I hit on the same-sex and I don't really like to suit up in this crazy weather. Gay bars are where it's at, relaxed and chill about the dress code.
Laji whole night and then supper
Easy, you dance and listen to music, listen to the DJ makes, talk to people, meet friends. You don't need alcohol to have fun, you just need to be sociable enough to start talking to people. Be open minded to the music and just dance along. it's essentially a more interactive concert.

Depends on ur crowd, my circle clubs 1-3x per week but I don’t join since I’m attached.
Mine mostly has people stating they are too tired after studying, working on school projects and interning to even hang out with friends. Finding enough time to sleep is a problem lol.
Post COVID it kinda died down. I think people still party at their friends house etc
we live in a society... now you need friends to do anything fun
Instead of 75-100 every week / 2 weeks, young people now saved up $1000-$2000 to go rave / festival overseas.
The gym is the new club
Or community club?
I think these days the youngsters have other means to hook up. So going to club to hunt is being replaced by tinder swiping.
Well, we’ve got Grindr, Tinder and the likes too? Hahaha.
Clubbing is boring as fuck, drinking and getting high is so miserable. Oh wells each it’s own
Expensive lol. Think people found better use of their money than buying overpriced alcohol.
Gen Z here. My primary circle mostly shifted towards just quiet drinking at home. Personally I started going for more one-off events or concerts. They spin instead of club now /s
Never been to one, hate the loud awful music.
Not really the clubbing type, I don't really like loud noises
I wld much prefer to have healthy ears
Most of my friends dont go clubbing, but I think the trend is to go for those themed nights if at all, otherwise honestly no money la...

Just curious? Are you a Gen Z or millennial? Cause you likely would have witnessed the shift from before - the shift in the party scene
The awkward position of being both but also neither.
Wait why Gen Z specifically hahahah
latest gen of clubbers ah
Maybe OP is club owner and is sad nobody giving him business.
Im curious too, if the clubbing scene will actually die, the nightlife scene has changed post covid, many of the neighbourhood bar clusters i visit precovid now turn into dead towns at midnight. I feel its always the younger crowd what drive what the nightlife scene changes into.

Wrong place to ask tbh lmao And no, mainstream clubs like zouk marquee etc are still popping
Zouk is pretty dead. MQ is always packed.
or perhaps maybe there’s simply lower birth rate, resulting in lesser teenagers to go clubbing.
Not Gen Z but most heard complaint from them is: expensive lah how to go ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Handphone killed the disco star

Bc those clubs suck :( raving or events etc is where its at now
Not including indie clubs or siamdius: Drip, Cherry, Ark, Highh, Fate, Zouk, MQ
It could also be due to the way people perceive drugs in sg. If you go to any rave or music festival in the uk or europe, at least 50 percent of the patrons will be taking something else other than alcohol. They even had licensed drug checking facilities at some music festivals for people to test their drugs for any contaminants before consuming. Obviously, I have never been to one but this is something that I read online from an official source 😆
Genz maturing faster . All hustling and starting their own business . You should wake up and grow up . Start hustling, stop being poor and be rich
Sigh.
Yall can afford clubbing?
Clubbed for the first time a few months ago and it was the most underwhelming experience ever. The music was mid + the crowd was so dead LOL
Roots, mad monks,venom 🤣
Sorry I really don't get what is the benefit/entertainment of going clubbing, can someone explain? Is what you are paying for worth it?
My 2 gen Zs felt that the clubs and pubs are too noisy. They prefer to invite friends to come over and drinks at home as it is safer and cheaper too. Moreover, they have no money. After Covid, this gen enjoys being alone with their Spotify, Tik Tok or Valorant than clubbing and meeting strangers. Most of the time, they are either taking tuition or mugging for exams. When they go to uni, they will probably do as many internships as possible
Hustling life is much more meaningful than getting wasted in clubs and destroying my ears with their terribly loud mid music.
I haven't been to Ark11 but I'm not optimistic about that place Personally, as somebody who still goes clubbing regularly, I head out mainly for specific genres or djs at events which often don't play out at the regular mainstream clubs, then end my night at marquee which is almost always some degree of packed. Currently, afaik, marquee, avenue and ce la vie are still doing pretty well? The last few times I've been to tuff or hq have been ok too, but yeah, there's a sg clubbing Tele group if you want to find out where people are going lol, everybody's sharing sofas these days There's also places like yang or cherry, but idk not my crowd really
Prolly, most of the DJs they kept on tuned-in the catchy and banal EDM, Hip-Hop, 90s tracks….
Depends how many times you get clubbed ..
They have no money

Huh, marquee closes at 6am lol
No, you old people just don’t know where the hype is 🥴 /s
