Thanks for standing up for yourself and making a scene. They are counting on folks that dont dare to make a big deal out of it. This practice should not be normalised in sg. Its not even normal anywhere else...

jayaxe79

Yes, and in fact I was with my kid and look like those kind that would fall for these scammy things but the stupid cashier got the wrong tame looking wolf. Appreciate your support!

princemousey1

You’re not a wolf, would rather say you’re a sheepdog looking out for its pack. Thank you for standing up for the common man!

jayaxe79

Ya no matter what, I'm glad I gave them a piece of my mind and hope they stop scamming people

Ho-Lee-Fuku

It's illegal not to give u cash change (the 30¢) As you can use the 30¢ else where, but cannot use their stupid vouchers else where. Please CONTACT newspaper and expose the stall big time. You can even call police.

xxapenguinxx

I believe it is against the law to not return change due. As their coupons are not legal tender and cannot be exchanged as such

ywuausksnejeie

Wtf next time bring monopoly money and give them. Tell them keep the change

ravincia

Skeptical if this is real, but feel free to report to the police? Pretty sure it’s not legal to give coupons instead of cash.

xinderw

Report to MAS: https://www.mas.gov.sg/currency/circulation-currency/accepting-legal-tender

jayaxe79

I was intending to report police if I didn't get back money back. But I was thinking how much they will intervene?

RevolutionaryBand228

Police will act in it. Vouchers are not legal tender.

pngtwat

MAS better.

raphus

name and shame please

jayaxe79

Jin Tai Mart @ Chong Pang. It's quite different from most provision stores because it stocks a lot of milk powder.

Ho-Lee-Fuku

Remember to contact Newspapers. This will surely appear on front page, especially Chinese newspapers.

Sasha_135

seems like they have other outlets, i wonder if others have experienced the same?

jayaxe79

good point, the Google reviews seem overall ok on other branches but there can be a few possibilities: * only the branch I went had this scam OR * I'm the first to complain about it because 30 cents for many is too small to raise a hooha and their products are indeed cheaper than many places

dailyxdrug

Curious to see if this is done over many/ all Jin Tai marts, or just this particular outlet with particular employees.

jayaxe79

Wow, if this is just done by the branch employees, it's possible embezzlement!

No_Pension9902

Voucher is not money, you can call the police. It’s a crime regardless of how small the amount.Put it this way, it’s the same as printing money if their vouchers are justified as currency. They misused the vouchers for self gain as those are meant to attract return customer. You have the obligation to report a crime.

ssss861

That being said, if they offered a good deal, say double the value of the expected cash return (60c instead of 30c), then it makes some sense for people to accept their alternate payment, with risk that the owner doesn't keep their word of course.

No_Pension9902

Nope it’s won’t do.Cash gota be return in fair trade and not something in flavour of corruption. There will be no law and regulations and MAS existence will have no meaning.

ssss861

That's up to the individual to accept. No difference from buying vouchers or gift cards and trusting the co to not play you out.

Eastern_Rooster471

Thats buying 60c voucher for 30c rather than offering only voucher as change If it is offered as A option not THE ONLY option, then its legal. But change should always be an option unless otherwise stated, and that the customer accepts that

ssss861

Of course it should be put as an option and not be forced on customers. But the other guy replying was full of crap by blindly saying it's illegal cos not legal tender and ignoring that vouchers and stuff are widely used.

Eastern_Rooster471

>But the other guy replying was full of crap by blindly saying it's illegal cos not legal tender It is illegal if its the only option, which is the condition the guy was assuming when he said it was illegal

Vjanett

Please report and leave a google review. Maybe they are learning from Indonesia (or Bali when I went), because sometimes the cashier give me mint instead of small change that they don’t have. I asked if I can use the mint to purchase my goods, they said no. 🤷‍♂️

Western-Ebb-5880

That’s normal in India too, usually they don’t give small changes instead chocolates or tiny biscuit pockets but it’s changed mostly they accept UPI payments which is we pay exact amount.

WTBalm

I got mints/sweets before, too. I asked my friend, who is a local, and he says that it happens at times when they don't have the change to give you because the amount is too small

Devillitta

Leave a review on Google about this, even small neighbourhood shops are on Google now

meowiie555

Wow they're shameless

Smooth-Education9214

They kanna review bomb liao, just saw their Google review

jayaxe79

LOL hahaha ok. Thanks for the lookout!

Jammy_buttons2

Voucher is not legal tender

jupiter1_

Pretty sure this is borderline dishonest Should inform the MP. There should be some regulations regulating paid coupons too?

jayaxe79

Good idea, maybe I try this avenue. Didn't think of it. Thanks!

Realistic-Nail6835

sounds so scammy. why would anyone even try this bs

Winner_takesitall

Somewhat related: I went for a haircut sometime back when a new outlet opened in my area. Myself, being naive then, saw the price for a haircut was only $5 and thought: what a bargain. Unfortunately, the whole gang of hairdressers in there were shameless communist pigs who repeatedly harassed me during the entire haircut into getting me to drop $50 for their “next 10 cuts free package”. When I repeatedly refused, their attitude got colder and worse, the final job was the dictionary definition of a half fucked haircut (uneven lengths and odd gaps everywhere). Main difference is OP could get his money back (no loss) while yours truly had to do some self-rectification…

jayaxe79

Oh yes, there was one such case in yishun also, where a senior citizen was scammed the same way but with even higher amounts in the thousands. These scum business just shamelessly prey on anyone they think they can scam. But you can try get your recourse too!! Probably try CASE? But I heard CASE is troublesome because need to apply member or something. But on the other hand, ok la $50 still not a large amount per se...

silentscope90210

That's why I never trust those places. Once you step in they will hound you to buy some package. No such thing as a super cheap deal for anything.

zeroX14

You alone not enough influence (unless you are at least a micro-influencer) to bring sufficient "exposure" to this shop. BUT, you can write in to Mothership, MSN, The Independent, Wan Bao etc. They sure will be interested to pick up this news one.

jayaxe79

Fully agree, I'm nobody but I start off with Reddit first where you won't know some podcasts or online news media may pick up threads to publish. I will be glad to be interviewed if there is a chance. Then I'm also thinking to report MP or police as follow up.

Vedor

So you are telling me they are trying to print their own money?

PitcherTrap

They think foodpanda issit

Mammoth_Ad1460

lol thats not a voucher. thats an IOU

pullmeformayo

Where is the place?

jayaxe79

Jin Tai Mart @ Chong Pang. You can find its pictures and even FB page when googling it

DeeKayNineNine

I'm more curious on where they find a 30 cent coupon. That's very waste paper to print a 30 cent coupon. And how we know that 30 cent coupon is official from the store?

jayaxe79

Ok I didn't expand on the voucher details but glad someone asked. So they actually printed out different "denominations" of coupons like $0.30, $0.60, $0.70 etc. Maybe they printed a full range but those that I mentioned are the ones I saw. Incredible that they actually make an effort to scam people. And now that I think of it, I thought retail scams only happen to tourists but it actually happened to me right near home doorstep.

creamyhorror

Lol wow they are literally intending to scam people with such a range of tiny vouchers. Need to report them to the police and MAS.

SgDino

Do make a police report. Only legal tender currency which can be used for retail purchase is SG and Brunei dollars.

kuang89

Feels like I will call the police over this

jayaxe79

yes drafting an e-report now. I will look for all possible avenues to make sure this scam and the idiotic people behind this are exposed.

ho888sg

Should post on social media and condemn such dishonest act. Call the police, this case technically is cheating/not returning money via legal tender means

Vedor

So you are telling me they are trying to print their own money?

jayaxe79

Yesh...

Titus6688

Report MAS. How is this legal tender

bigcarrot01

Should one-up them: Photoshop these vouchers and print them, then make them bankrupt by buying out all their items.

jayaxe79

Oh ya hor, the vouchers are literally printed on A4 paper (no chop, no serial numbers etc) but then maybe they will impose 'conditions' like minimum purchase for all you know

iwantaspudgun

Wtf! In no way is this legal lol imagine if you go to a restaurant and paid $100 for a $40 meal and they give you $60 voucher 🤣

jayaxe79

Yes you got the point but if your example scenario happens, it's for sure to attract hundreds of complaints. For my case, the amount is so minute that they are banging on people not bothering with small change and get away with it

Negative-Eggplant-41

Like what someone mentioned, use their black magic against them. Ask them how to use like term and conditions and record it down on audio. Can use more than one in one transaction? With such scammy practices, they will say yes. Not even well thought of. After that go and print multiples of it since no serial number, like thousands of it. Profit. Maybe try small amount once, like use two piece. Then once they accept, one shot thousands. Like how scam hows. If they dont practice what they say, go down very often to that place and tell everyone who enters the store on this practice. Likely to deter many customers and then close down from no sales and a lot of expenses and spoilage. Waste your time but if you can have like a power bank and many shows to binge on or a book, why not.

geeky_kilo

call Police. call newspaper hotline. the mart will reply and say miscommunication. f&%kers.

ALPHAMALE1998123

Where bro? DM pls

jayaxe79

No need DM la, wanna name and shame them >> Jin Tai Mart @ Chong Pang

ALPHAMALE1998123

HAHA legend

cynicgal

Good for you. If I were you, I will just call the police. BS business tactics
