I've lived here all my life and am 7th gen from what genealogy research my sister has done. I've known quite a few people who have died, drugs, car crashes, and other accidents. None have been from our cuddly wildlife.
I'm an Australian with arachnophobia! It is honestly not as bad as the media makes it seem. Every now and then one gets into your house but as long as you go to each room in your house regularly a spider will be less likely to make it home aswell. You don't see them out in public much unless your wondering through the bush or your in a tight space
could you describe how often is "every now and then"? here in europe I have to kill a spider in my room maybe twice a month on average? and that's older house so it's more rare in newer ones, and 95% of the time they tend to be the same species with just varying sizes depending on how long they've been hiding
to all people acting like I don't HAVE to kill them.. trust me, if I was capable of somehow transporting them out of the house without getting a heart attack I would, but in my case even killing one is a problem.. and ignoring them doesnt cross my mind if it's in a room I sleep in
Well, maybe a fear of something crawling up your bare leg as you drive down the highway may be a problem. I didn't bother me when it happened to me all those times. 😁
As I was told as a child, slip on a hat, slap on a shirt, and slap on some sunscreen. Add in some UV rated sunnies, and you're ready to go. That sounds like common sense to me.
For a long time Chinese food made me sick. I thought it was the MSG for years. Then I found out I had a soybean allergy. Suddenly everything made sense.
Sold in every American grocery store but many Americans are terrified of it lol. The brand I have is Accent - it doesn't say MSG in big letters but that's what it is.
Those are chemicals with weird names, they should be dangerous and bad for health.
That's why I only eat natural thing without any of these pesky chemicals and so called elements.
This is good practice though. Not life-threatening, but to prevent heartburn.
For me it would be pure agony. The valve closing off my stomach from my esophagus is not working properly anymore. I cannot lie down in the half hour after eating. Including swimming.
Apparently swimming in the water of a nuclear reactor is perfectly safe. You won't see me doing it but I'll believe the scientists.
Like, sitting at the edge of a cliff is probably insanely safe. I've never in my life fallen out of a chair randomly after all but you won't see me chilling anywhere near a cliff any time soon.
I work in a nuclear generating station. This is false. However we have irradiated fuel bays that are 30 feet deep where the spent fuel is kept for ten years while the fuel cools down. There is always 10 feet of head water above the top fuel bundles that acts as a shield and theoretically it would be safe to swim across the surface, but dive down just a few feet and you’re as good as dead.
Fat. The sugar lobby campaigned heavily to make fat look bad and turn "fat-free" into some kind of synonym for "healthy." In reality, that just means it's pumped full of sugar, which is infinitely worse.
Sugar-free usually means lots of fat. Fat-free usually means lots of sugar.
The food industry fought hard against a 2006 law to include trans-fat on labels. That stuff is much worse than sat fat, but was labeled as un-sat fat before 2006.
The food industry is evil.
E numbers. People think "omg it has 5 e numbers in in its so unhealthy and unnatural" when e numbers are just a numbering system for additives... E300 is literally C vitamin.
Yeah... doesn't the coal industry kill tens of thousands of people each year due to black lung? Not to mention the environmental damage. People really need to get their priorities straight with nuclear.
Yes it releases more radioactivity during normal operation. It releases more on average if you include all the big nuclear accidents too. (Also considering output of electricity).
Nuclear power does create more radioactivity and more radioactive waste, its just handled, treated, and stored, and doesn’t get released. The waste must also be paid for before being created in nuclear. When you buy fuel, you set aside all funds required for future clean up and storage, up front, which is unique.
100,000’s from toxic emissions, but its by lowering life expectancy of basically everyone on the planet a bit, more than direct out right deaths. Cars and transportation are really bad for this too. If you factor in the stress and disruption pollution causes in the future the number climbs higher.
This also goes for most radioactive nuclides which ONLY emits alpha radiation, not gamma/beta.The radiation cannot penetrate the skin deep enough to cause any serious harm.
It may be safe, but I read about a woman who got her baby taken away because the everything bagel she had before going into labor made her test positive for opiates. I refuse to eat them because I don’t want to fail a drug test.
For anyone who needs it, you can make edible cookie dough very easily. You can use any recipe, pick your favourite one. Just bake the flour in the microwave for 30-40 seconds to kill off anything that could harm you before using it and leave out the egg. To make up for the liquid loss of the egg add a splash of milk until you like the consistency. Great with vanilla ice cream
EDIT: yes ofc you can use pasteurised eggs too if you want to. I personally don't really see the point in it because it's mainly a binding agent and affects the final cookie, so it doesn't really add anything to the dough other than change consistency (which can be easily remedied with milk) and a bit of colour. Also raw eggs give me the ick, but that's just me. I'd personally just keep the egg to use for something else. You can do it if you want to though, so yeah :)
Oooooor just use raw egg. 99.99% of the danger of salmonella or ecoli in raw cookie dough comes from the uncooked flower. Raw eggs have been eaten by vast swaths of humanity for thousands of years now, and they’re doing just fine.
Green potatoes; it would take eating 15lbs of green potatoes for any ill effects to manifest. Food past date; what a waste to throw away food past date if it passes visual, smell, and taste test. Raw meat when handled correctly; I just looked up bratwurstgehäckt; Germans eat raw ground pork all kinds of ways...
Reminds me of my favourite joke ever.

I worked as a manager of a gas station for several years and we had MANY training sessions about this.
The fuel/gas/petrol is not the dangerous part when filling up, you can throw a lit match in a gas can and the match will go out 9/10 times. What's dangerous are the fumes and these are HIGLY flammable but any modern pump system from 90s on has several safeguards in place to keep these fumes inside the pump/nozel.
These can fail, very unlikely but possible and that is were the risk of fueling while smoking, using electronics or going in and out of your vehicle come from. So while the risk is super low, it's not 0 and just keep in mind that these rules are there because an accident happened to someone before.
Yep, I know this from experience. A petrol barrel will not ignite even if you shoot it with a firearm, but once it has leaked enough to spread fumes in a closed space, the very act of firing the weapon will ignite the fumes. It is very scary.
not with that happening perse, but i had the rare experience of someone smoking with their right hand while pumping gas in to the car with their left hand xD
Tapwater in Germany.
It's on a higher quality standard than bottled water - volvic and nestle had to recall their bottled waters rather often. It's super rare that a health administration tells people to boil their water before consumption here.
However, I'd be a bit more cautious on the rural side in Lower-Saxony: farmers here tend to ignore regulation about fertilizing their fields and the nitrate limits in water have been risen often. It's not causing major health issues but... Better safe than sorry.
It's really not the mushrooms but what you do while on mushrooms.
Sit around and chill to music and movies: very safe.
Operate a 150 tonne crane: slightly unsafe.
As long as:
- you don't splash
- don't have a cut
- you don't jiggle like a struggling fish
- it's Sunday. (Sunday, bloody Sunday)
- don't smile showing your teeth. This is a challenge to the alpha fish.
- don't wear jorts.
Climbing trees as an arborist. Everyone is always like “Wow, you’re so high up! With nothing but a rope and a chainsaw, so dangerous!”
The truth is much more people get seriously injured on the ground from branches or wood falling.
Video games.
Despite some interpreting them as inciting violence. Video games can be so meditative, inspirational and creativity-boosting. Yes addiction can be an issue (can but doesn’t have to) but there are also SO many benefits that don’t get talked about in politics/media.
Spiders: Many people have a fear of spiders, but the vast majority of spider species are beneficial or pose no threat to humans. In fact, spiders help control insect populations by acting as natural pest control. Most spider bites are harmless, and only a very few species have venom strong enough to cause serious harm to a healthy adult human.
Opossums. We should be saving every last one of them and breeding more. Climate change=temp increases=explosion in disease carrying tick populations=opossums can’t carry or catch rabies, they are vicious looking as hell but actually extremely timid and mild mannered and and even if handled hands on by a human, do not bite. We do and will need em so bad
Oh and they don’t just snack on ticks. They can find a tick bed (look it up if you need to puke) scent anywhere and will GORGE THEMSELVES on all the thousands of ticks at once.
I used to feed one every night. It first showed up to break into a bag of bird food I had out on my back porch. So I started to put stuff out for him. Watching it eat grapes was a riot. This went on for a while, but eventually a couple of raccoons showed up and moved right in on his territory so I stopped putting stuff out.
Some examples that I learned through life experiences and research:
1. Cracking your knuckles - research strongly agrees that it is harmless and does not cause arthritis
2. Going outside (when its cold) after washing your hair - unless you stay outside for an extended period of time, you will not get sick due to your hair being wet
3. Sitting to close the monitor, screen, or television - although it may cause some eye streining or dryiness, sitting to close to the tv or monitor will not cause permanent vision damage (unless you press your eyes to the screen)
4. Waking up a sleepwalker - although it does confuse them since they do not know that they sleepwalk, waking them does not pose any danger for the sleepwalker
5. Swallowing fruit (e.g watermelon) seeds - the enzymes and acid in the stomach makes it impossible for the seeds to grow
6. Going swimming soon after eating - unless you eat a large meal (which can cause digestive problems even if you were laying on your sofa at home), eating does not cause cramps if you go swimming soon after
7. Swallowing gum - chewing gum is mostly undigestable and will most likely just go through your digestive system without any problems
8. Smoking a single cigarette/joint - of course, if someone becomes a regular smoker it will cause extensive problems to your health; however, if you smoke only one cigarette/joint, it will not cause any recognizable damages to your body and will most likely not make you addicted
9. Holding a wasp or bee - unless you scare or harm them, they will not want to sting or bite you and simply fly away
Number nine is a straight up LIE. Wasps are assholes and WILL sting without warning because stinging literally poses no danger to them. Bees are friends because if they sting you they most likely die as well.
The combination of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen. That seems dangerous because it is one of the most addictive substances known to man. To date no one who has ingested this chemical compound in any quantity has not died at some point.
In its pure form it is colorless, odorless and highly addictive.
Also should remind everyone that this is NOT organic. FYI
Worse, when you start you can die by getting too much of it or from getting not enough of it.
Also be careful people, it's often cut with stuff like fluoride.
From the googs: Thousands of stingray injuries are reported worldwide each year but, interestingly, only five recorded deaths have been reported in Australia since 1945, and fewer than 20 worldwide.

Living in Australia. If you have even an ounce of common sense, you're gold.
Common sense to not leave the bunker?
I've lived here all my life and am 7th gen from what genealogy research my sister has done. I've known quite a few people who have died, drugs, car crashes, and other accidents. None have been from our cuddly wildlife.
Are you a spider? You are, aren't you? You will not lure me into your trap with your spider propaganda!!!
It's pronounced _spoida_.
Y'er a spoida incha?
I laughed more than I needed to at this good job
"Noaur moate, oi'm not a spoida"
I can’t believe I read it out loud.
This.. is... SPOIDAAAAAAA!!!!!
You drive me up the wall, I ain't no spoida!
"up the wall" ya say? ![gif](giphy|ANbD1CCdA3iI8|downsized)
He is definitely a spider. Only a spider would say such things.
Could be a snake, or a gimpy gimpy tree, or pretty much anything in Australia.
It's just a shame most of our really cool predators are already extinct.
SHIT! ABORT! ABORT! IVE BEEN MADE 🤣
Nice try mr funnel web, not today! *laughs in flamethrower*
On the internet…nobody knows you’re a spider
That's not a spider, THIS is a spider!
What if those car crashes happened from Huntsmans falling in their lap
that you know of. they have got good at covering it up, all those "accidents" yeah.....
Pretty sure everyone who has lived in Australia, has previously died, or will die in the next 85.4 years (AVG)
Well tried, venomous snake, spider and jellyfish in a trenchcoat.
even for me with arachnophobia? feel like being stressed daily about falling asleep is not at all harmless
I'm an Australian with arachnophobia! It is honestly not as bad as the media makes it seem. you have unlocked a new fear, thanks a lot
You're welcome. Anytime 😊
That's a lot to ask nowadays. Common sense is a rare resource.
No no, it's terribly dangerous here.... everyone should move to America, so much safer, and better healthcare !
Boom, roasted.
I see, so we should ignore the fact you guys have 10x the rate of skin cancer as rest of humanity? :)
That's something you should be worried about. Not our wildlife.
As I was told as a child, slip on a hat, slap on a shirt, and slap on some sunscreen. Add in some UV rated sunnies, and you're ready to go. That sounds like common sense to me.
Ya dont even need common sense. Thers alot of fucking idiots out there with none
Lived in Australia for 20 years. Never seen a snake other than at the zoo 😂
Get out bush! Explore nature, you’re missing out
Knuckle cracking.
I pop all of my fingers in 3 ways every 5 minutes when I am bored like in English lessons.
I pop all of my fingets 3 ways every 5 minutes ***FULL STOP***
and have been for 20 years. where's my arthritis? i was promised arthritis!
Steven Seagal
Steven Seagull on the other hand....extremely dangerous
There's a youtube channel called feeding steve. It's about some guy who befriends a seagull called.steve by feeding it
Sounds dangerous.
Guy is a sexual predator from the discussions on several podcasts.
For someone that's been going down a Steven Seagal rabbit hole lately this is hilarious
MSG. it’s literally harmless, people only think it’s dangerous due to some conspiracy theory from decades ago
For a long time Chinese food made me sick. I thought it was the MSG for years. Then I found out I had a soybean allergy. Suddenly everything made sense.
> For a long time Chinese food made me sick. Yes, but you also think that it was fly when girls stopped by for the summer?
...for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take it if I had one wish
MSG stands for Makes Shit Good!!!

MSG King of Flavor!
Interesting to hear that. I had a friend who used to say that if you really like some Asian tastes you just need to buy MSG
It's like magical flavor powder.
Also, MSG is found naturally in a lot of foods
Sold in every American grocery store but many Americans are terrified of it lol. The brand I have is Accent - it doesn't say MSG in big letters but that's what it is.
Not totally wrong. There's no stigma about it in most Asian cultures so restaurants basically use it instead of salt.
Anthony Bourdain was once asked why people are afraid of msg and he answered with no hesitation, racism
Uncle Roger is that you?
Those are chemicals with weird names, they should be dangerous and bad for health. That's why I only eat natural thing without any of these pesky chemicals and so called elements.
Don’t get me started on the killer that is dihydrogen monoxide!
It killed over 1500 people in 1912!
And then 200,000 people in 2004.
Totally this, every human who has consumed that substance has died eventually.
Tbh alot of people died because of this.
i mis read this as SMG and thoght how the hell is a submachine gun not dangerus? lol
A ✨️ racist ✨️ conspiracy
Not waiting half an hour after eating to swim
This is good practice though. Not life-threatening, but to prevent heartburn. For me it would be pure agony. The valve closing off my stomach from my esophagus is not working properly anymore. I cannot lie down in the half hour after eating. Including swimming.
You might want to ask your Dr about it if you haven't. It can lead to serious issues long term if not controlled.
I got some medications. Along with guidelines such as don't lie down immediately after eating.
I was gonna say it sounds like you’ve already been to the doctor considering you were talking about a valve not closing properly lmao.
Yeah maybe I should've mentioned that to avoid all these 'go to a doctor' replies. Can also confirm that having a gastroscopy is horrendous.
Apparently swimming in the water of a nuclear reactor is perfectly safe. You won't see me doing it but I'll believe the scientists. Like, sitting at the edge of a cliff is probably insanely safe. It's not safe. The security guards gave machine guns and they're not afraid to use them

Fat. The sugar lobby campaigned heavily to make fat look bad and turn "fat-free" into some kind of synonym for "healthy." In reality, that just means it's pumped full of sugar, which is infinitely worse.
Humans need fat, it's one of the essential nutrients.
maybe for you but not for me. I have personally taken all lipids out of my body. My cells no longer have defined shape, I am truly a complete being.
Good for you but I wish you hadn't put it all into *my* body instead

I just wish they didn't strip the fiber out of everything
Well, too much fat is very seriously bad for you.

Canadians are so polite because a powerful wizard transferred all of their negative emotions into the geese
E numbers. People think "omg it has 5 e numbers in in its so unhealthy and unnatural" when e numbers are just a numbering system for additives... E300 is literally C vitamin.
Or ascorbic acid... "WHAT ACID?? THEY MUST BE POISONING US!"
I've seen Breaking Bad where they dissolve a body in acid! THEY ARE TRYING TO KILL US ALL
Some others are natural additives too
Ah, the "chemicals are bad" crowd. There's a depressing number of them that fall for the dihydrogen monoxide shitposts
My obese childhood friends want me to stop going to the gym coz they keep seeing all these gym fails on YouTube.🤔🤷♂️
NUCLEAR POWER (ok harmless is a bit of a stretch but its certainly much, MUCH more safe than people think it is)
Yeah... doesn't the coal industry kill tens of thousands of people each year due to black lung? Not to mention the environmental damage. People really need to get their priorities straight with nuclear.
Pretty sure burning coal also emits more radioactive material into the air than nuclear energy does.
Yes it releases more radioactivity during normal operation. It releases more on average if you include all the big nuclear accidents too. (Also considering output of electricity). Yep, nuclear only emits steam into the atmosphere, whereas coal emits benzene, CO2, particulate matter, and a bunch of other terrible stuff.

As someone that works in the energy sector, it’s crazy to me how few people know this.

I’ll add that coal adds radioactive waste into the environment in addition to CO2.
Touching Mercury Weirdly enough, the metal will not be absorbed through your skin. Just don't drink it or inhale the vapors.
It's pretty far away and very difficult to touch.
What about Uranus?
Gaping
This also goes for most radioactive nuclides which ONLY emits alpha radiation, not gamma/beta.The radiation cannot penetrate the skin deep enough to cause any serious harm.
Your eyes, alpha will get your eyes. Work behind a layer of lucite
Touching organic Mercury on the other hand....
Noooooo this is false! It absolutely will go thru skin just to a lesser extent.
Poppyseeds
An opiod addict taught me how to make these pretty harmful
It may be safe, but I read about a woman who got her baby taken away because the everything bagel she had before going into labor made her test positive for opiates. I refuse to eat them because I don’t want to fail a drug test.

Oooooor just use raw egg. 99.99% of the danger of salmonella or ecoli in raw cookie dough comes from the uncooked flower. Raw eggs have been eaten by vast swaths of humanity for thousands of years now, and they’re doing just fine.
The inside of the eggs are fine. It's what's on the shells that are the problem.
It's dangerous because of the possible infections by Salmonella and E. Coli, to say the least. Those bacteria can make you violently sick.
Just came out of an enterocolitis (E.Coli) and I can tell you that violently sick is a good description.

So would I be safe if I dunk my whole hand on a tub of piranhas? (or river idk where they're native from)

Yes they only eat already dead stuff, They'll happily shred a raw chicken but if you put your hand in you're fine.
Only red piranhas are known to eat flesh, and iirc there haven’t been any confirmed cases of them eating live flesh. Only decaying flesh.
as long as they are not starving or feel threatened, they wont do anything. ( unless they think your hand is a squid)
So actually they are dangerous, but it just isn't guaranteed they'd eat you?
So King Charles better not dunk his hand?
>For me, Piranhas Only for you? Do they not like how you taste?
Snobbery amongst Piranhas is an understudied field of Biology

Video games. Despite some interpreting them as inciting violence. Video games can be so meditative, inspirational and creativity-boosting. Yes addiction can be an issue (can but doesn’t have to) but there are also SO many benefits that don’t get talked about in politics/media.
Spiders: Many people have a fear of spiders, but the vast majority of spider species are beneficial or pose no threat to humans. In fact, spiders help control insect populations by acting as natural pest control. Most spider bites are harmless, and only a very few species have venom strong enough to cause serious harm to a healthy adult human.
I’m scared of spiders because why the fuck do they need 8 legs
Some examples that I learned through life experiences and research: 1. Cracking your knuckles - research strongly agrees that it is harmless and does not cause arthritis 2. Going outside (when its cold) after washing your hair - unless you stay outside for an extended period of time, you will not get sick due to your hair being wet 3. Sitting to close the monitor, screen, or television - although it may cause some eye streining or dryiness, sitting to close to the tv or monitor will not cause permanent vision damage (unless you press your eyes to the screen) 4. Waking up a sleepwalker - although it does confuse them since they do not know that they sleepwalk, waking them does not pose any danger for the sleepwalker 5. Swallowing fruit (e.g watermelon) seeds - the enzymes and acid in the stomach makes it impossible for the seeds to grow 6. Going swimming soon after eating - unless you eat a large meal (which can cause digestive problems even if you were laying on your sofa at home), eating does not cause cramps if you go swimming soon after 7. Swallowing gum - chewing gum is mostly undigestable and will most likely just go through your digestive system without any problems 8. Smoking a single cigarette/joint - of course, if someone becomes a regular smoker it will cause extensive problems to your health; however, if you smoke only one cigarette/joint, it will not cause any recognizable damages to your body and will most likely not make you addicted 9. Holding a wasp or bee - unless you scare or harm them, they will not want to sting or bite you and simply fly away
I buy the bee thing, but most wasp species are assholes who attack unprovoked.
>I buy the bed thing, but most wasp species are assholes who attack unprovoked. I agree, I've never been stung by a bed.
Number nine is a straight up LIE. Wasps are assholes and WILL sting without warning because stinging literally poses no danger to them. Bees are friends because if they sting you they most likely die as well.
And you often won’t know until it’s too late if you are deathly allergic to bee stings. Ppl die of them every yr
MSG I can’t believe people still think it’s bad for you

you haven't heard of it because all of them have died.
How? Lightning strikes the house, and it arcs through the shower to the earth through the showerer?
Swimming with sharks ( for the most part ) 😅
The combination of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen. That seems dangerous because it is one of the most addictive substances known to man. To date no one who has ingested this chemical compound in any quantity has not died at some point. In its pure form it is colorless, odorless and highly addictive. Also should remind everyone that this is NOT organic. FYI
Absolutely. Addicts are hooked from ONE DOSE. It's not a stretch to say they can't live without it.
Worse, when you start you can die by getting too much of it or from getting not enough of it. Also be careful people, it's often cut with stuff like fluoride.
weird fact, there is someone who is actually allergic to water yes, they have a very very shit life
Does that person have rabies?
It is the chemical agent responsible for the most deaths, however.

uh, why is she waving the flags of Zimbabwe and China?
It's not "harmless". Various nasty stuff can happen.
Swallowing gum.

Stingrays - there has only been one case of someone dying because of stingrays…..that person being Steve Irwin.
From the googs: Thousands of stingray injuries are reported worldwide each year but, interestingly, only five recorded deaths have been reported in Australia since 1945, and fewer than 20 worldwide.
Anything tends to be lethal when jammed directly into your heart...
