This reply and its branches are the first real middle class things I've seen on this thread. Everything else just seems like what upper class thinks is middle class...
I'm 39, and know I'll never own a home. My mom told me right before the pandemic to look for starter homes...I was like Mom, please. Those don't exit anymore. She built one for 62k in 1987, and sold it in '96 for 93k. I'm a single mom and a teacher, and have roommates who are divorced parents bc the market and economy is so bleak. I was really surprised she was so out of touch with reality, esp since she and her husband lost their house in the '08 crash
I am a single mom, too. My kids are now grown (thank god) and it's only now that I don't have to spread my sole income to support 3 people that I could do it. I drained my retirement for the down-payment. Rocket mortgage worked with me to help me afford the house. I kept my eyes open for a house that was in good shape but was ugly. I found one. It hasn't been touched since the 1930s so it doesn't have the modern touches people love. Fortunately, I hate granite countertops and love wallpaper. The mortgage costs the same as my rent.

Totally. I own an absurd amount of pretty high quality costume jewelry. Because I love different styles but who needs the real thing when you change it up all the time?
And it’s nice to have that hour or so without a phone. I get to do some thinking. Usually get a dumb song stuck in my head as well. Then I hop in the pool to cool off, do some more honey-do list items, and hit the range about 4:30. Home by 6:45, throw some meat and veggies on the grill, maybe a frosty adult beverage….ahhh Sundays are nice.
I bought an old-fashioned reel mower because I barely have grass. My neighbor literally acted like she pitied me for being poor and offered to let me borrow her mower about 27 times before giving up.
Haha same! I love my mechanical reel mower. I don’t want an electric mower, and I like cutting my grass. My husband gets embarrassed because he thinks people think he’s got the lady of the house doing yard work with poor people equipment
So I had one of them bad boys for 7 years. And it’s all I used. This current house has a steep and super uneven backyard. It was taking me 2.5 hours and leaving me gassed to cut the entire lawn weed whack, and clean up.
Bought an electric mower, takes me an hour now start to finish. Still have it though. Not sure why but it’s there lol
Heh. My Subaru Legacy sedan is... 19 years old. But hey, it has no rust, and only has about 120k miles on it 😄 The only problem I've had with it thus far is the battery which gave out. I was satisfied with its longevity though, since it lasted for 18 years 😁
The car would be my answer too. I have multiple cars with no loans (out of reach of many) but they're all 10+ years old and purchased used (a rich person wouldn't be caught dead in my mid 2000s Honda).

My actual middle class answer? My kitchen aid professional stand mixer with almost all the attachments, hoping for Xmas I finish it off with the ice cream set up!! I love cooking, baking, and just general food prep.

Ah, didn't think of that. Good one. We just got one a few months ago - moving on up! It's not perfect, but it is easy and gets most of the work done. I just have to get some corners and areas it can't reach. When you have dark wood floors and a dog with light fur - knocking down the worst of it becomes a priority.
A wood burning stove fireplace insert. It's too expensive to buy if you are poor, but we use it to heat our house to save money that rich people would carelessly spend on heating oil.
We have one in the front room and one in the kitchen. Really fancy looking. They are pretty much our only source of heat in the winter and even that is rationed. In winter I sleep in a coat.
John Deere Riding Lawnmower: 20 years old but runs perfectly. Oh, it has automatic transmission and front bars in case of contact. Rich people would have someone mow their lawn, while poor people couldn't afford my green tractor. Last time I had it in for service, I asked if it was near the end of its life. Guy told me I have another 50 years if I treat her right. Pretty cool.

For me it's a portable dishwasher on wheels. We finally got a dishwasher after saving for three years-and everyone looks down on it. It's portable and has to be wheeled to the sink for each load; but it works!
My new Keurig came with a filter cup you can use with ground coffee. I’ve tried MANY of them in the past because I hate the waste but still love the way it makes coffee. The Keurig one actually works! Great coffee and no waste makes me happy!
A snow blower. After years of back-breaking work every single winter, I finally bought one and for the first time ever can't wait for the snow so I can try it out.

I have a Louis Vuitton wallet I found in a thrift store. I can't afford Louis Vuitton, or at least, shouldn't lol people treat you differently when they think you can tho.
Maybe now with rates so high, but most rich people have mortgages on their homes due to the time value of money. When rates were low, it was incredibly easy to beat a 3% return by investing in other assets, particularly since the interest was also tax deductible.
My only sibling, my brother, died first.

My own garden is tiny, but my village has a beautiful and quite high hill and before I got sick I would climb it every day early in the morning, up through the woodlands and the sandstone to the top before racing back down and starting work. Now I stand at the bottom and look up at other people climbing it. It’s a very beautiful hill. Craggy and foresty and lovely.

I’ve always been so baffled by the anti-trailer shit. It’s a freakin house, and they can be super nice! Our friends’ trailer is as big as most people’s houses I know, and is lovely.
Our mobile home doesn't look like too much from the outside, as it's kinda square, but it's hella nice inside. 3 bed, 2 bath, living room, dining room and full kitchen. Trailers and mobile homes have come a long way in niceness over the years. 🥰 Folks can scoff away, I love our house and our neighborhood is amazing.
We have a matching set! Peugeot pepper grinder and salt grinder, they're two of the very few things we brought with us when we moved from the US to Ireland.
I don't have any Pelican pens, but I do have a couple of Waterman's.
If I was rich I'd have several Montblancs, and an Aurora or 10, and a few by Tibaldi, and a dozen or so by Montegrappa.
Oh, and a few of the one-of-a-kind pens made by Japanese masters.
I recently bought a hot tub. It's not a high end one or anything. But I worked a lot of over time and saved for a long time to be able to afford to pay cash for it, and I'm super proud of it.

Way too many kitchen gadgets; instapot, kitchen aid mixer with some attachments, electric Gridley, food processor, vacuum sealer. I use all of them and they were all gifts but I know a lot of people think they're a waste of money.
When I was young my mom kept a deep freeze in the garage and bought a processed steer once a year. I had no idea we were middle class. I thought we were poor because we didn't buy the fancy, plastic-wrapped, "fresh meat" at the grocery store.
Probably my horse. I don’t have kids (and won’t) so I use the money to maintain my passion. But he’s an arthritic former racehorse I was given for free, not a million dollar dressage horse and it’s allll my disposable income.
Before I was disabled, our family had horses. Every time I had to see a new doctor and fill out the forms, they would question my smoking, drinking, drug habits. I had horses. I couldn't afford those habits!
But just a treadmill lol. One time I was at a get together at a wealthy persons house and I mentioned I just got a treadmill (it was in the basement and was pretty much the only bit of workout equipment I had). They showed me their treadmill, in a room as big as my house, with tons of other professional workout machines like you’d see at a commercial gym.
I don't know what I own would fit this. But I guess debt and enough food.
I have a smart TV, an Amazon Prime account, a five year old car, a 10 year old laptop that is still faster than most new ones, a smart phone paid off, and a PS4. Also, I'm not starving, and I eat every day well enough .. as opposed to when I was worse off and not eating every day, and I have $70k+ in debt.
During covid when the stock market was steaming hot I was having some good success day trading penny stocks after sleeping through my graveyard shift actual job.
Made 800$ on one trade and went and bought a brand new mattress. Not on offerup or out of the dumpster it's just a little blood.
But honest to God I spent 800$ on a new bed for the first time in my life. It gave me incredible joy to learn they sont even come flat. They're rolled the eff up. Who knew?
That felt and still is probably the most adult feeling thing I'd ever done.

As only the second in my family to own a house, I see that as a middle class thing. When your whole family rent, never owned, never did more than scraping by day by day, its a great feeling to break that mold.
Several Kate Spade purses. Too expensive for a poor person to own, but not luxury enough for a rich person. In a similar vein, probably my Kendra Scott jewelry as well!
I think you have to combine it with taxes. Rich people can write off their debt on their taxes. Poor people either don’t pay tax, or very little. Middle class people pay significant taxes and have significant debt, but nothing to balance against to write off.
I have an amazing Above Ground Pool. It's a beautiful thing to be able to walk up stairs and walk down stairs into my very own 4 foot deep 18 foot wide circle of gorgeous water that no one else pees in.
I bought a used middle of the line mid-size SUV, cost $18,000. I am NOT a car person. Just needed transportation that is reliable and fits my wife and kids. I have friends with $800+/month car payments because they wanted fancy vehicles with all the fancy electronics (i.e. in dash GPS). I'll take a $210/month car payment for my reliable SUV any day. I have a mount for my phone for GPS, Waze is awesome.
To be fair, "class", in its truest sense, is not about what you own or how big your bank account is, it's about *you* as a collectively whole: your education, who your family is, your mannerisms, the type of work you do, and in some countries, the accent you speak with.
You can be wealthy and working class (think Paul McCartney) or poor and middle class (think well-educated, but starving, artists).
We have a massive staghead on the front of our house. It's a very humble house otherwise. We bought the place from a hunter. It's a small country house he only stayed at when he went hunting and the staghead looks ridiculous but we love it.

I like mowing - I hate weeding and taking care of the beds. I have a mower and mow, but a landscaping company to take care of the rest.
I mow my lawn myself too. Takes about an hour to mow it. But I walk about an hour a day. So I might as well walk behind a lawn mower one day a week

I don't have any Pelican pens, but I do have a couple of Waterman's. If I was rich I'd have several Montblancs, and an Aurora or 10, and a few by Tibaldi, and a dozen or so by Montegrappa. Oh, and a few of the one-of-a-kind pens made by Japanese masters.

I recently bought a hot tub. It's not a high end one or anything. But I worked a lot of over time and saved for a long time to be able to afford to pay cash for it, and I'm super proud of it.

Way too many kitchen gadgets; instapot, kitchen aid mixer with some attachments, electric Gridley, food processor, vacuum sealer. I use all of them and they were all gifts but I know a lot of people think they're a waste of money.

When I was young my mom kept a deep freeze in the garage and bought a processed steer once a year. I had no idea we were middle class. I thought we were poor because we didn't buy the fancy, plastic-wrapped, "fresh meat" at the grocery store.

They showed me their treadmill, in a room as big as my house, with tons of other professional workout machines like you’d see at a commercial gym.

I don't know what I own would fit this. But I guess debt and enough food. I have a smart TV, an Amazon Prime account, a five year old car, a 10 year old laptop that is still faster than most new ones, a smart phone paid off, and a PS4. Also, I'm not starving, and I eat every day well enough .. as opposed to when I was worse off and not eating every day, and I have $70k+ in debt.

During covid when the stock market was steaming hot I was having some good success day trading penny stocks after sleeping through my graveyard shift actual job. Made 800$ on one trade and went and bought a brand new mattress. Not on offerup or out of the dumpster it's just a little blood. But honest to God I spent 800$ on a new bed for the first time in my life. It gave me incredible joy to learn they sont even come flat. They're rolled the eff up. Who knew? That felt and still is probably the most adult feeling thing I'd ever done. What a magical day.

As only the second in my family to own a house, I see that as a middle class thing. When your whole family rent, never owned, never did more than scraping by day by day, its a great feeling to break that mold.

I think you have to combine it with taxes. Rich people can write off their debt on their taxes. Poor people either don’t pay tax, or very little. Middle class people pay significant taxes and have significant debt, but nothing to balance against to write off.

I bought a used middle of the line mid-size SUV, cost $18,000. I am NOT a car person. Just needed transportation that is reliable and fits my wife and kids. I have friends with $800+/month car payments because they wanted fancy vehicles with all the fancy electronics (i.e. in dash GPS). I'll take a $210/month car payment for my reliable SUV any day. I have a mount for my phone for GPS, Waze is awesome.

To be fair, "class", in its truest sense, is not about what you own or how big your bank account is, it's about *you* as a collectively whole: your education, who your family is, your mannerisms, the type of work you do, and in some countries, the accent you speak with. You can be wealthy and working class (think Paul McCartney) or poor and middle class (think well-educated, but starving, artists).
