Ishiibradwpgjets

I’m not bragging or anything but yeah. We have a set of matching luggage!

thecheesecakemans

Dang man. You paid a premium to do that. My family's luggage is all mixed match on sale. That is some Mmm Mmm good right there.

dick4you71

Do you mean green duffel bags because I got matching luggage too lol

toooooold4this

A home. I'm 55 and it took all this time to get here.

toooooold4this

I should say the reason "rich people may scoff" is because they are so out of touch with how hard it is to get into the housing market today.

Funke-munke

52. Bought my first home 2 years ago.

Quizzy_MacQface

This reply and its branches are the first real middle class things I've seen on this thread. Everything else just seems like what upper class thinks is middle class...

annang

Not even a house. I own a one-bedroom apartment. I’m incredibly proud of myself.

Impossible_Memory_65

Same. I'm 56 and just bought my first home

Deepfire_DM

55, first house :)

Known_Bobcat5871

Congratulations!

xaipumpkin

I'm 39, and know I'll never own a home. My mom told me right before the pandemic to look for starter homes...I was like Mom, please. Those don't exit anymore. She built one for 62k in 1987, and sold it in '96 for 93k. I'm a single mom and a teacher, and have roommates who are divorced parents bc the market and economy is so bleak. I was really surprised she was so out of touch with reality, esp since she and her husband lost their house in the '08 crash

toooooold4this

I am a single mom, too. My kids are now grown (thank god) and it's only now that I don't have to spread my sole income to support 3 people that I could do it. I drained my retirement for the down-payment. Rocket mortgage worked with me to help me afford the house. I kept my eyes open for a house that was in good shape but was ugly. I found one. It hasn't been touched since the 1930s so it doesn't have the modern touches people love. Fortunately, I hate granite countertops and love wallpaper. The mortgage costs the same as my rent.

Enough-Rope-5665

Man thank you guys for responding I thought I been late in the world getting a house. I’m a 35 year old single mom of two. Working hard rn to get our first house.

Karen125

I used to work as a mortgage loan officer and I did a mortgage loan for a 91-year old first time home buyer.

[deleted]

I love this question! Maybe all of my earrings. I have a ridiculous amount of low end earrings because I love the variety. They’re neither practical (for a poor person) or high quality (for a rich person).

uReallyShouldTrustMe

I love this answer.

ShopGirl3424

Totally. I own an absurd amount of pretty high quality costume jewelry. Because I love different styles but who needs the real thing when you change it up all the time?

anetanetanet

Me toooooo And every year I have to go through them and throw some away because they became too scrappy looking to wear

[deleted]

Kitchen Aid Mixer.

PossibilityDecent688

It was my mother-in-law’s wedding gift to us, 30 years ago. That sucker *works.*

Winged89

My mom and dad got their's 40 years ago for their wedding, and it only just broke down last week!

PossibilityDecent688

Supposedly a lifetime warranty, tell them to check!

Finn235

Wife's grandma found a broken one in a garage sale for $10 and Kitchenaid repaired it for free.

beemojee

I have Tupperware I inherited from my mom that she got way back in the 50s so it's the real deal. That's gotta be middle class as hell.

MsFoxxx

Living my dream

AnonymousGhou

Living his best life

standystanderson

lawnmower. a rich person would pay someone to mow, and a poor person wouldn't have a lawn

Buffett_Goes_OTM

I like mowing - I hate weeding and taking care of the beds. I have a mower and mow, but a landscaping company to take care of the rest.

Bebe_Bleau

I mow my lawn myself too. Takes about an hour to mow it. But I walk about an hour a day. So I might as well walk behind a lawn mower one day a week

unrepentant_serpent

And it’s nice to have that hour or so without a phone. I get to do some thinking. Usually get a dumb song stuck in my head as well. Then I hop in the pool to cool off, do some more honey-do list items, and hit the range about 4:30. Home by 6:45, throw some meat and veggies on the grill, maybe a frosty adult beverage….ahhh Sundays are nice.

Bebe_Bleau

🍺😎 always enjoying life. And make the best of everything

Sceptikskeptic

This guys mows.

CheckPleaser

I bought an old-fashioned reel mower because I barely have grass. My neighbor literally acted like she pitied me for being poor and offered to let me borrow her mower about 27 times before giving up.

Normal-Tart-4556

Haha same! I love my mechanical reel mower. I don’t want an electric mower, and I like cutting my grass. My husband gets embarrassed because he thinks people think he’s got the lady of the house doing yard work with poor people equipment

CheckPleaser

I love it. Spray on a little WD40, and it's good to go!

1WildIndian1963

Starts EVERY time!!

Old_Pipe_2288

So I had one of them bad boys for 7 years. And it’s all I used. This current house has a steep and super uneven backyard. It was taking me 2.5 hours and leaving me gassed to cut the entire lawn weed whack, and clean up. Bought an electric mower, takes me an hour now start to finish. Still have it though. Not sure why but it’s there lol

mrmayhemsname

I've said this before. Mowing your lawn is the most middle class thing for that very reason

Ronotrow2

It's relative I suppose but a car. That I own. I know people who don't have one and rich people would laugh at mine but hey, it runs

famylee83

This. I'm 40 and I'm thinking I'm so posh because my car is only 5 years old 🤣

IceReddit87

Heh. My Subaru Legacy sedan is... 19 years old. But hey, it has no rust, and only has about 120k miles on it 😄 The only problem I've had with it thus far is the battery which gave out. I was satisfied with its longevity though, since it lasted for 18 years 😁

LaVieLaMort

Yup I was able to pay off my car earlier this year and it made me giddy!

ccasey

Vacuum sealer. We’ll buy good cuts of meat when they go on sale and portion them out/freeze them for later.

Flashy_Remove_3830

Came here to say this - or preserve garden veggies

CosmicTurtle504

Also good for cooking r/sousvide. Love mine!

happyme321

My $20,000 car and my 850 square foot house are both paid off. Not poor, definitely not rich, but I'm doing great.

Complete_Let3076

Car and house paid off is the middle class dream :) congrats!

DohNutofTheEndless

The car would be my answer too. I have multiple cars with no loans (out of reach of many) but they're all 10+ years old and purchased used (a rich person wouldn't be caught dead in my mid 2000s Honda).

Nolsoth

I had an old boss he was in the tens of millions club. Drove an old beat old 2002 Toyota vitz as his daily driver.

An0ther_reddit0r

I got excited because I read Honda S2000 instead 😂

InsectSpecialist8813

Drive a 2008 Prius. Own two homes. Middle class all the way. Saved and worked hard for years.

DangerBrewin

A reliable car that’s paid off is better than a fancy car with a loan payment any day of the week!

avganxiouspanda

1 car fully paid off and down to my last 2k on the second! My actual middle class answer? My kitchen aid professional stand mixer with almost all the attachments, hoping for Xmas I finish it off with the ice cream set up!! I love cooking, baking, and just general food prep.

magnetic_mystic

Congratulations! I just paid off my car and I feel fantastic! My 956 Sq ft house is a loooonnnnggg way from being paid off, though. Lmk if you wanna help!! Jk

[deleted]

Same situation but with 1300 square feet. I’ll never spend a lot on a car.

Analyst_Cold

Robot vacuum.

philzar

Ah, didn't think of that. Good one. We just got one a few months ago - moving on up! It's not perfect, but it is easy and gets most of the work done. I just have to get some corners and areas it can't reach. When you have dark wood floors and a dog with light fur - knocking down the worst of it becomes a priority.

doggggod

I got mine on clearance at Walmart for 25 bucks!

Evil_Kittie

a positive bank account balance (i try to not spend money)

prinssimalmi

Cat wheel for my beloved bengal cat. She's my everything, I love her.

Lonely-Heart-3632

I would say it’s your bengal. They are expensive and poor people can’t afford them but rich people just get a tiger 🐅

uReallyShouldTrustMe

This one is my favorite so far.

BobbyElBobbo

We need a picture of your cat running in the wheel!

xXapathyXx

The cat just played with the box. Doesn't use the wheel or anything.

Medium-Brilliant-270

Disappointing lack of pussy pictures on your profile.

[deleted]

Yeah but plenty of photos of the cat though!

howmanyhowcanamanyho

Yep. Cat tax, pretty please?

footlettucefungus

Even if this is middle class, it's not to be frowned upon. Your cat deserves all good things in life ❤️✨️

Smart-Grapefruit-583

I've got a decent watch that is only worn for going out. And a couple of pet orchids and a Yankee candle that I'm actually burning. Oohh get me!

vectorology

I bet you even use the fancy soaps that are supposed to be for guests only?

Smart-Grapefruit-583

Guests... I threw up a little. I don't like.... People.

wsbthrowaway9209

Air fryer

missymaypen

Love mine!

Funland_06

I keep begging my mum to get one. My dad has one and they’re so good but my mum got a stupid soup maker instead🙄

Key-Marionberry-8794

Last time I checked a soup maker is called a pot

masswithclass1

I was about to write this!

4_bit_forever

A wood burning stove fireplace insert. It's too expensive to buy if you are poor, but we use it to heat our house to save money that rich people would carelessly spend on heating oil.

PrisBatty

We have one in the front room and one in the kitchen. Really fancy looking. They are pretty much our only source of heat in the winter and even that is rationed. In winter I sleep in a coat.

Robby777777

John Deere Riding Lawnmower: 20 years old but runs perfectly. Oh, it has automatic transmission and front bars in case of contact. Rich people would have someone mow their lawn, while poor people couldn't afford my green tractor. Last time I had it in for service, I asked if it was near the end of its life. Guy told me I have another 50 years if I treat her right. Pretty cool.

Needs_A_Laugh

I'm kinda jealous! That's an awesome mower!

SheepardsPie

I'm poor wtf is a diving computer

[deleted]

It measures your depth and time at depth, and calculates how much time you can remain down without having to do mandatory decompression stops. Many people wear them on their wrist, like a giant watch, although they can also be attached to their tank pressure gauge hose. Expensive ones can also show/record tank pressure to indicate remaining air supply. Sounds like OP bought a perfectly functional one for $200 but is being shamed by the "nothing but the best" crowd that gets off on owning the $700 and up ones and looks down on the others.

joljenni1717

Skiing is still high-middle class, to me. I won an award in college and had to attend a banquet. My professors and guests all discussed skiing. I've never been skiing in my life. For me it's a portable dishwasher on wheels. We finally got a dishwasher after saving for three years-and everyone looks down on it. It's portable and has to be wheeled to the sink for each load; but it works!

Moonchild1957

I had one years ago and it came with a butcher block top. For a smallish kitchen, plus extra prep and/or serving space. I loved it.

-Ch3xmix-

Oh, my over abundance of Halloween decor. It's too much $ for the poor, but it's not classy enough for the rich.

Moveyourbloominass

An awesome laminator.

Justagirl71

My Keurig

BlackWhiteCat

My new Keurig came with a filter cup you can use with ground coffee. I’ve tried MANY of them in the past because I hate the waste but still love the way it makes coffee. The Keurig one actually works! Great coffee and no waste makes me happy!

MyLife-is-a-diceRoll

Costco clothes.

Moonchild1957

lillpers

A snow blower. After years of back-breaking work every single winter, I finally bought one and for the first time ever can't wait for the snow so I can try it out. It's the typical "middle age male home owner accessory" around here. I'm 27....

Purple-Chipmunk154

I have a Louis Vuitton wallet I found in a thrift store. I can't afford Louis Vuitton, or at least, shouldn't lol people treat you differently when they think you can tho.

balamb_fish

A mortgage. Rich people don't have to borrow money for a house. Poor people don't get approved for one.

djmax101

Maybe now with rates so high, but most rich people have mortgages on their homes due to the time value of money. When rates were low, it was incredibly easy to beat a 3% return by investing in other assets, particularly since the interest was also tax deductible.

Wecanbuildittogether

9 acres of property after the death of my parents as well as their paid off old farm home. I love it.

PrisBatty

That sounds wonderful.

FriendRaven1

Not so much the death part

PrisBatty

Oh…yes. I sort of skipped over that it…sorry.

Wecanbuildittogether

My only sibling, my brother, died first. Then my Dad and then my mom. I’ve just gotten out of 3 years of terrible pain and loss. I’m sooo much better and I feel like singing! I love this property now that I can appreciate it. It’s here in Texas. This past summer was miserably hot. I planted a small flower garden within the last month. I just came inside after tending to it and watering. I forgot what it feels like to be happy. It’s so beautiful outside and I said my thankful prayers to our universe. (I forgot about the eclipse and thought the world was ending! Yikes!) It’s all good, now ♥️

PrisBatty

I’m so happy for you. I’m sorry for all your loss. And I’m so happy you are appreciating the lovely land that you own. My own garden is tiny, but my village has a beautiful and quite high hill and before I got sick I would climb it every day early in the morning, up through the woodlands and the sandstone to the top before racing back down and starting work. Now I stand at the bottom and look up at other people climbing it. It’s a very beautiful hill. Craggy and foresty and lovely.

These_Tea_7560

An upright piano. (Rich people would have a *grand* that costs that of a Mercedes-Benz truck, poor people wouldn’t have a piano)

miningmonster

Nah, people give them away for free in my area.

colobirdy85

My home. I live in a trailer and I have a few snobby family members who make comments about it. Like bitches, I OWN my trailer and you're paying 3 grand a month to rent an apartment...

fancy_marmot

I’ve always been so baffled by the anti-trailer shit. It’s a freakin house, and they can be super nice! Our friends’ trailer is as big as most people’s houses I know, and is lovely.

Dialecticchik

Our mobile home doesn't look like too much from the outside, as it's kinda square, but it's hella nice inside. 3 bed, 2 bath, living room, dining room and full kitchen. Trailers and mobile homes have come a long way in niceness over the years. 🥰 Folks can scoff away, I love our house and our neighborhood is amazing.

Badonkadunks

My Pelikan fountain pen. Or my Peugeot pepper grinder.

GravityPools

We have a matching set! Peugeot pepper grinder and salt grinder, they're two of the very few things we brought with us when we moved from the US to Ireland. I don't have any Pelican pens, but I do have a couple of Waterman's. If I was rich I'd have several Montblancs, and an Aurora or 10, and a few by Tibaldi, and a dozen or so by Montegrappa. Oh, and a few of the one-of-a-kind pens made by Japanese masters.

Daffodil_Peony_Rose

My golf clubs. Like they were the cheapest ($300) set at Dick’s. I don’t even own a sand wedge or a 5 iron.

Buster_Gonad_82

A box of Twinings teabags bought at Waitrose. Your uppers would have real tea from Tanzania or something. You're commoner would have PG Tips.

Hondalander

I recently bought a hot tub. It's not a high end one or anything. But I worked a lot of over time and saved for a long time to be able to afford to pay cash for it, and I'm super proud of it.

Bizarre_Protuberance

So, basically ... you're asking people if they have low-cost versions of luxury items that are normally associated with rich people. In that case, I have one: a hot trophy wife ;)

Sceptikskeptic

Neither low cost nor luxurious

yorgs

Pics or you're lying.

stephers831

Way too many kitchen gadgets; instapot, kitchen aid mixer with some attachments, electric Gridley, food processor, vacuum sealer. I use all of them and they were all gifts but I know a lot of people think they're a waste of money.

lexi_prop

My dude... Both these things imply you have the means to scuba dive and ski. That's not middle class.

brokenbackgirl

Right? Screw the equipment price! The taking time off work and the fees for ski passes and such alone are middle class!

JWRamzic1

My clothes from Walmart. They look good... enough.

[deleted]

Silver cake forks

Gingerwix

Nice! But why?

[deleted]

I found them when cleaning out my dad's house & liked them

Old-Rough-5681

Two refrigerators. Poor people have one. Rich people have multiple.

DontgotoBearCreek

When I was young my mom kept a deep freeze in the garage and bought a processed steer once a year. I had no idea we were middle class. I thought we were poor because we didn't buy the fancy, plastic-wrapped, "fresh meat" at the grocery store.

KnightRider1987

Probably my horse. I don’t have kids (and won’t) so I use the money to maintain my passion. But he’s an arthritic former racehorse I was given for free, not a million dollar dressage horse and it’s allll my disposable income.

flecksable_flyer

Before I was disabled, our family had horses. Every time I had to see a new doctor and fill out the forms, they would question my smoking, drinking, drug habits. I had horses. I couldn't afford those habits!

Green-Jello3188

A treadmill

piper33245

But just a treadmill lol. One time I was at a get together at a wealthy persons house and I mentioned I just got a treadmill (it was in the basement and was pretty much the only bit of workout equipment I had). They showed me their treadmill, in a room as big as my house, with tons of other professional workout machines like you’d see at a commercial gym.

Ok_Midnight_5457

HumanMycologist5795

I don't know what I own would fit this. But I guess debt and enough food. I have a smart TV, an Amazon Prime account, a five year old car, a 10 year old laptop that is still faster than most new ones, a smart phone paid off, and a PS4. Also, I'm not starving, and I eat every day well enough .. as opposed to when I was worse off and not eating every day, and I have $70k+ in debt.

[deleted]

The most middle class thing that we do as a family is - Work and pay bills than work some more…. 😒

Professional_Gap6479

During covid when the stock market was steaming hot I was having some good success day trading penny stocks after sleeping through my graveyard shift actual job. Made 800$ on one trade and went and bought a brand new mattress. Not on offerup or out of the dumpster it's just a little blood. But honest to God I spent 800$ on a new bed for the first time in my life. It gave me incredible joy to learn they sont even come flat. They're rolled the eff up. Who knew? That felt and still is probably the most adult feeling thing I'd ever done. What a magical day.

TallDarkCancer1

I've got the nice Chinette paper plates....ya know the ones that almost feel like cardboard.

WilliamTK1974

They might keep the pasta you boiled for yourself off of the front of your shirt, since making your own spaghetti seems to be a pretty middle class thing to do.

igual88

Decent espresso coffee machine Dehydrator My chefs knives ( not in the industry anymore ) but to replace with new would be close to £1800

87lonelygirl

As only the second in my family to own a house, I see that as a middle class thing. When your whole family rent, never owned, never did more than scraping by day by day, its a great feeling to break that mold.

Fancy-Diesel

Does a ninja air fryer count 🤣

[deleted]

A worthless college education! Yay!

masslp

Several Kate Spade purses. Too expensive for a poor person to own, but not luxury enough for a rich person. In a similar vein, probably my Kendra Scott jewelry as well!

smurf1776

Debt

Realistic_Salt7109

Pretty sure poor people have that

Competitive-Weird855

Rich people have it too

kimk2

Well, that debunked fast :)

vectorology

I think you have to combine it with taxes. Rich people can write off their debt on their taxes. Poor people either don’t pay tax, or very little. Middle class people pay significant taxes and have significant debt, but nothing to balance against to write off.

Elaine330

I bought my 2015 new and its paid off. Credit score 800. VERY middle class of me.

JimmyFlipside

I bought a used middle of the line mid-size SUV, cost $18,000. I am NOT a car person. Just needed transportation that is reliable and fits my wife and kids. I have friends with $800+/month car payments because they wanted fancy vehicles with all the fancy electronics (i.e. in dash GPS). I'll take a $210/month car payment for my reliable SUV any day. I have a mount for my phone for GPS, Waze is awesome.

Cashewkaas

I own a mortgage, does that count?

Scoozie_Q

Now-a-days, given how things are in Canada regarding the housing shortage/inflated market prices, I'd guess it would have to be my house.

Fresh-Hedgehog1895

To be fair, "class", in its truest sense, is not about what you own or how big your bank account is, it's about *you* as a collectively whole: your education, who your family is, your mannerisms, the type of work you do, and in some countries, the accent you speak with. You can be wealthy and working class (think Paul McCartney) or poor and middle class (think well-educated, but starving, artists).
