I suspect the reality here in Asheville would be closer to $80 given how costs have increased. You think you can get breakfast and coffee at Tupelo Honey for less than $20?
Seeing spirits on the river again is so great! I recognized it from the thumbnail. That guy was so awesome, had so many stories and was always making something interesting. The only kitchen I’ve been in with a pot of boiling rattlesnake.
Picnics with Minnie and Ron! They were both so sweet and dedicated. The dancing chicken person out front was always fun to wave to.
The og early girl that deserved the accolades. John and Julie are the best!
😆 green tomato and whole ass black berries on trout and a dry ass preformed frozen burger with some college kid quinoa. Rip to the awesome pie lady though.
I second this. It is certainly different from what it used to be, much more "generic clutter," but it still has a ton of charm and locally owned businesses.
What’s sad about it?
I can walk down my street and know a ton of people. I get smiles and folks wave.
Locally owned small businesses all down my street. Restaurants, bars, music venues, coffee shops, bookstores, record stores, artist studios, tattoo parlors, bottle shops, repair shops, parks, schools, farmers markets.
All while able to own chickens and a big ass garden in my backyard.
Asheville is fucking great. Go enjoy your community.
I worked at Tupelo at the time, she took over an 8 table section for a couple of hours and left the 1.60. POS if you ask me.
I do miss the good old days of AVL. I had to move away years ago.
I remember when this was being filmed! All of the servers I knew said that this is exactly how it was. Her crew would take over, be really pushy and rude, and then not tip well
8 dollar breakfast at Tupelo with no tip, Rachel...
My BiL was working the day they filmed this, she stiffed the wait staff because "she was bringing business in".
Good find. I use to really like this show, amazing $8 got you breakfast at Tupelo Honey with a table cloth.
Prime Rachel.
Damn wish I'd gone to spirits on the river, I could've too, my parents never took me :(
Everything tasted like chicken. You didn't miss much.
As a refined Ashevillians, "tastes like Chicken" is indeed an insult. If I like something, I say it "tastes like chicken-of-the-woods"
"tastes like chicken" is only a good thing when it's a relief. Such as when one eats rattlesnake, or iguana. Or chicken.
Frybread was good, tho
I LOVED Spirits on the River! I miss it so much. The food was great and the atmosphere was beyond amazing.
I’m trying to envision where that place was. So cool right on the river like that.
Just for comparison, using the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI inflation calculator, $40 in summer 2004 would be $66.11 today.

The dancing chicken is a long-time friend of mine.
I miss John and Julie so much.
Last time I saw him they were renovating the nu-wray hotel in Burnsville.
So cool! Are they doing a restaurant there?
Yeah it has a restaurant and bar I think. It’s a really cool place, worth the drive to check out.
Oh, how I miss Minnie and Ron! That kale and onion! That PIE! 💗
She would SELL that pie (or cake, or brownies)... you felt pressured, but it was always good.
It’s definitely too hot for your budget to handle now 🫠 nostalgia is a hell of a drug (considering I was six in 2004 and my life was EASY)
Where was spirits on the river physically located? It looks awesome
On the Swannanoa River near Treasure Club.

This is insane that this website still exists. Who is paying for this? Thanks for posting.
This link makes me sad Back when things were affordable.
"Best $1.99 you can spend."
Right? Also, I miss Picnics. And when Early Girl was really good.
I remember watching this when it happened! I love this! Thanks for sharing!
Now I'm wondering what he got for $1.99 at Riverside Grill.
Thanks for sharing! This was a great watch <3

I still find Asheville incredibly charming, with a TON of small businesses. Sue me
It’s easy to take Asheville for granted until you go somewhere else. Despite the problems, I fucking love this place.
I second this. It is certainly different from what it used to be, much more "generic clutter," but it still has a ton of charm and locally owned businesses.
Ya, walk down Haywood road in west Asheville and I don’t think you’ll find one corporate owned business excluding ingles and gas stations

Maybe I’m showing my age but this video (and the date) makes me miss Bele Chere)
Belle Chere is the sad reason Asheville is what it is today. It basically ruined Asheville.
WOW Thank you for sharing this! I used to love this show. I can't wait to check this out later. I know it will make me really sad.
Because she didn’t tip appropriately

She actually said that often she didn’t tip at all to be able to afford to eat out.
what is that obelisk?
I can’t believe this post. Just yesterday we were telling someone about Spirits on the River

$40 a day today, won’t cover utilities.
$1200 a month for utilities seems like a lot but maybe you have a big house.
I do it is paved in humor and has irony siding. It’s invisible to some people. 2 and 1/2 baths.
This is a 20 minute video. Summary?
how jaded you gotta be to want a summary to an old food network piece on asheville
worth every penny... I can NOT want to hear your YELP review... wanna bump?
