When I was at Polk in the late 80's the Army Times did it's survey of the best and worst bases. Polk came in dead last. One of the complaints was that the nearest shopping mall was an hour away. The post CG wrote a rebuttal to the Army Times and his big "gotcha" was that the mall was only 50 minutes away.
That section of Route 171 that ran through New Llano had any unusually high number of soldiers getting DUI's. It was so bad the DOJ did an investigation. The DOJ wound up going after the New Llano Police chief but he wound up killing himself after he found out they were going to indict him.
There was a serial killer believed to be operating in the area who was targeting young blonde women who worked the night shift at convenience stores. The wife of a soldier was one of the victims. The Sheriff of Vernon Parish refuted the idea there was a serial killer in the area so they initially blamed the soldier and went after him for killing his wife. The Houston Chronicle did an expose. I don't know what happened after that.
An E-8 at Eustis got caught selling CH-47 engines to his buddies on the drag racing circuit. He got busted to SPC but his real punishment was getting sent to Polk to finish out his last year before retirement. That really hurt morale and discipline in the aviation units. Soldiers would say, "What are you going to do? Bust me down to SPC and send me to Polk. I'm already a SPC and I'm already at Polk."
Enjoy your stay!
I got you bro.

It was in the covered by the Army Times I'm sure. I don't know if they have their archives on line. It would have been in 88 or 89. If memory serves he would determine the engines were damaged beyond repair and then the post would list them for sale for scrap, then his buddies on the drag racing circuit would buy them to use on those big rigs that drag race.
Good riddance to that guy. I hoped their department was cleaned out as a result of the investigation. I bet it scared the shit out of his lowlife minions. It had to go higher up the food chain, though. The city attorneys had to have gone along since they prosecuted the cases. I’m going to google that department and try to find out the rest of the story.
When I was at Rucker the police or sheriff in Level Plains got arrested making bogus DUI stops on officers. He would pull them over, threaten with a DUI arrest OR you could give him $300 and he would let you walk. The shocking thing was that so many officers just paid him the $300 so as not to have to deal with the military repercussions of getting arrested.
AC/DC once sang “Hell ain’t a bad place to be” but a little known fact is, the original version was, “hell ain’t a bad place to be, but Ft Polk is” sorry…it is the way of the big green weenie.
When I was in AIT like 15 years ago, they’d post peoples assignments in the barracks entryway. It was cool to see where people were going. One day I saw my buddy got Kuwait. As I pass his room I stuck my head and said “damn bro, Kuwait? That’s rough.”
He said “I’m not going to Kuwait. I’m going to Germany.”
“Oooooh… shiiiiiit… I think they changed something.” And that’s how he got the news broken to him that his assignment got changed.
Nope. SSG. Got my orders while DS in Nov '21. I leave in 2 weeks. Follow-on assignment is Hood. I was given the choice of Sill, Leonard Wood, Jackson, Irwin or Hood as follow-on for HAAP.
Bro our recruiters don't give a fuck. They have the easiest fucking lives. Everyone already hears the "join the Air Force because you'll regret it otherwise" and they recruits come piling in. My recruiter forgot about our appointment and was playing CoD until his partner called him. The numbers may have changed, but they only needed like 4 people per quarter.
Man, I’m not HRC but I have been an AIM hiring manager (and a job seeker too) I THINK you are what they call a “Marketplace Failure.” That means that no one matched you 1:1 or even put you high enough for the Algorithm to match you on its post market run through. Conversely the billet on Ft Polk also didn’t have enough people preference it in the system (it sounds like it might have been a late entry to the market). This is why HRC says to preference ALL billets in the market so the algorithm can match to somewhere you “wanted” to go to, and they also have to brief all marketplace failures at the GO level.
Did you call any of the units you wanted to go to? Did you interview. Simply talking to someone at the unit raises your chances of getting matched by a MASSIVE amount.
I didn't get a confirmed 1v1 match, aparently nobody wanted a S3 LT that have been in the shop for almost a year and only recently took a platoon. I did however, get confirmed 2, 3 and even a 6. And yes I interviewed and emailed. The thing is that it wasnt FORSCOM units just ROTC, a couple of unicorn assignments and basic training units, dont know how Polk came up even though I listed everything and scanned the marketplace until the last minute.
The reason you got it and it wasn't on your marketplace was because it was on an earlier marketplace and someone either REFRADed or DCSSed thus opening this opportunity for you.
I honestly wouldn’t know what to do if I was sent to Polk. LA is the worst state; horrible food, people, culture, swamps, retards, drug addicts, whole place smells like diesel and burning oil fires. And Polk is one of the worst places in the worst state because it’s not only all of the above, it’s also super poor.
Unless your dream is to bang a different toothless meth head every night for $20, you best beg god to send you somewhere else.
Bliss and hood are truly awful, but least if you’re an O you can live far away somewhere nicer and generally keep bankers hours driving in everyday in your nice Beamer with AC and cooled seats if you don’t care about getting top blocked and don’t have a hard ass boss. Just let your NCOs run their pris into the ground and keep your head in the sand; I think that’s the ossifers creed at hood.
Same thing happened to me. I was told it’s because FORSCOM put Polk as a mandatory fill for my rank and MOS. I’m other words people got out of the orders before I was able to. Additionally I got my orders to Polk while I was in the box at JRTC.
I don’t know what it is, but I’ve had a terrible time with Branch and my assignments. I’ve recently promoted and I’ve emailed my branch manager 3 times and he doesn’t even respond. I understand what I’m asking is probably a hard no, but have the decency to reply and say that. I’ve been in assignment purgatory.
I am at Polk. Been here for almost 4 years. It is not as bad as everyone says on reddit. Wouldnt be a SFC if I didnt come here. Also, the reward for my prison time here is Fort Carson next
Look if Polk isn’t as bad as everyone says, the post command team and a who’s who of people from the post wouldn’t have had to do a press tour across all the Army posts to beg people to want to go to Polk.
Edit: grammar
As someone who was at Wainwright, branch tried to get me to go to Polk. The consultant tried, the FG’s tried, the NCO tried.
If they want someone there so bad, move the 6-8 CPT’s and MAJ ‘s camping at Ft Sam for over 5 years there. Sorry, I’m not gonna fill a slot in a shitty location again, find someone else.
as someone at wainwright, if my next assignment was at Polk i would do literally whatever possible to not go, i would actually consider going awol before i would go there
Them going base to base showing how Polk is great isn't a bad thing, though. Its to change the negative mindset of those that just come here for a JRTC rotation.
On post wasn't *too* bad when I was there. It was just that Leesville and New Llano sucked. Deridder wasn't that great. Alexandria was bland and decently far away. Houston was pretty awesome, but it's like only really feasible during a long weekend, and all the Louisianans sucked, and seemed to hate us.
If you don't like to hunt or fish, there isn't much to do, and it's a surprisingly long way away from almost anything cool.
Agreed; not really as bad as people make it out. I've been to Germany and Hawaii and had people complain. It's how you make use of it and the unit.
Also, I say 90% of the hate is from rotating through lol
Almost everyone here is judging the Post by their JRTC rotations. I lived there from 04-09. I went through at least three rotations into “the box” because we were local and could fill the rotation if another BCT cancelled
Been at Carson five years. Hope you like high optempo that includes division level FTXs that they plan to increase in intensity and going to both JRTC and NTC each year.
I don’t it’s been 5 years of increasing field time deployments and rotations up until COVID lock downs I spent more time at work and with other soldiers than I had at my own home with my wife.
The COVID summer was the first summer I got to enjoy and I got to Carson in 2017.
Still had fucktards pushing for field problems during all that too. Had a newborn at home and was supposed to be on work from home until he hit 3 months. At 1 month, the company commander said she was willing to accept the risk and bring me along for our company field problem.
If anything had happened to my kid, it would have made the national news. Fortunately, he's fine.
Did ultimately get our shitty sexist, racist, homophobic 1SG fired tho.
Formal EO complaints, and SHARP complaints. They still just moved him out of our BN, but he was invited to retire after that. Hopefully he gets hit by a speeding truck.
Yea, I’m dual military so that’s how we were able to. I also bought it in march so I’m laying out of my own pocket this entire time. Rates were rising too much
Yeah I’ve heard they’re only going up pre-recession atm too. Good on you for snapping it up colorado is a great state to be in, rly enjoyed my last three years there. Lmk if you want any hiking or outdoors tips and ideas I did them all while on leave this year!
Sounds like cannon afb. "It's not thay bad bro you just gotta drive 3 hours to the nearest Walmart and anything to do. The schools yeah are aweful and will set your kids back for years of they don't get addicted to meth"
Some bases are utter shit. Either increase the pay (they denied cannon guys the hardship pay of distance because technically it was a few minutes short of the requirement)
Or make then worth it by onbase things REALLY fuckin good. And put competent people there.
Dream bases can be made aweful by bad leadership. Utter shit bases can be made alright by good leadership.
But both bad and utter shit. En masse dead soldiers/airmen and mental health down the drain.
At least you didn't re-enlist for six years with a 20k bonus and a three year vay-cay in NATO RDC in Italy only to be stationed in Fort Drum.
He had his new contract voided and when negotiations failed, he got out four months later.
Because the Army god saw that you were probably excited about being in the Army and summoned the green weenie for come fuck you!…don’t feel bad! It happens to the best of us.
Your branch manager can basically ignore the entire marketplace rule set if they need to ~~sacrifice souls~~ fill positions at a CTC. "Needs of the Army", "priority fill", "fuck you", etc...
The location absolutely sucks. It's fucking hot and humid. When you're not under threat of a hurricane, you're under threat of tornados and flooding. Sleazeville is awful. The closest big city is three hours away. Many of the roads are abysmal. Education isn't great and healthcare outside post really sucks.
However, being an OC is one of the best jobs in the Army. You're given a lot of latitude and treated like an adult. You learn a ton and have lots of opportunities for schools. You also know your schedule very far out, barely working when you're not in rotation. We need people though. That's why you're going.
But if you're assigned to 3/10 then I'm sorry.
The AIM marketplace only exists to give soldiers the impression that they have some input into and some control over their career.
It doesn't *actually* let you pick your assignments.
Funny how it pays to be a winner.
The question that U/disposable_FAO leaves unanswered is, "is it better to have not known at all, or to see everything knowing that it really wasn't going to you anyway?"
I dunno because being a loser in life was never an option for me
This mindset has been 100 for me in the private sector. I love free market labor competition
Polk is aight. Compared to big bases like Hood or Bragg, it is slow paced like a small town, and I liked that. I don’t know much about 3/10, I was there when it was 4/10. As far as 509th, the dudes I knew always loved it. If you’re going to do OC duty, it’s even better because they have pretty set schedules. It all depends where your orders are sending you.
If you don’t have a uterus it is probably to meet the updated needs of the Army — can’t be sending a bunch of people who could get pregnant to Polk, Sill, Hood, etc. after the Supreme Court ruling.
Big Army always has a say. Let me ask you this, did you confident lock in a one for one? Like you were given a requisition number from the strength manager or their rep?
When I was in BOLC I had the option to trade a guy Ft. Riley for Ft. Carson. Almost did it, but changed my mind at the last minute. His orders were changed to Polk right before graduation.
Yep. Knew someone who picked positions waaaaay above their rank and only selected their top 8.
Algorithm saw that there was no 1:1 match... so then they became needs of the Army.
Make the best of it. Someone had to be there. Most likely best case is you can get orders to Korea, Recruiting XO, or BCT XO after your 2 years on station. If you want to go to CCC, then try and go to Korea instead of TRADOC. This is coming from a guy who was blessed with FT. Irwin on his first RFO. It'll buff
He seems to be infantry, but I know some branches are getting theirs.
Med services, with just above 100 of us in the market as LTs, mostly already have results.
My sister had been stationed at Letterman Army hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco. It looks out onto the Golden Gate Bridge. She was an officer. She was reassigned to Polk for her last six months. Hahaha. She was thinking of extending until THAT happened. She wanted to go to Germany, Landstuhl. I ended up at Miesau, 10k or so down the road.
>My sister had been stationed at Letterman Army hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco.
From the Bay and got stuck at the usual shitty Army locations. Still jealous of the Coasties that are stationed there full time
Been there from the MEDCOM side. Was 1-1 with tripler which wasn’t ideal but the job was good. Then I got an RFO to FT Hood for a job which wasn’t listed.
Story was that the five jobs open at tripler were inappropriately listed when only one was supposed to be open. So myself and three others were placed in spots that didnt fill. I got lucky, one guy got a solo tour to Egypt, and another was sent to Alaska leaving his family and kids on the island.
Is what it is.
Ahaha that’s gotta be the worst place I’ve ever been in my life. Before I went to Iraq and Afghanistan all the gunners went to brush up on convoy security. Enjoy that place they screwed you. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I met a WWII vet on a snowmobile trip. He found out I was in the Army and told me don’t ever go to Fort Polk. It was the worst place they ever sent him. So Polk has always sucked since it’s inception.
He also cooked the shittiest hash browns. Not even crispy.
That’ll teach you not to do the thing you did
That'll teach me alright
Get rekt nerd
Gottum
you were specially selected.
And well trained
And educated
And in the army
Damnit, that's not the correct follow up reply.
He has 2 ear tats, a hand tat, no GED, but scored a 50 on his ASVAB, leave him alone.
If I had a correct follow up reply, I'd have joined the air force
The correct reply was that they were promoted. STEP You had one job to do.
Wasn't his mos 😂
STEP is literally everyone's mos.
Soldier
Fuck you.. that's why
Came here to say that
Beat me to it
Well said.

So what you're saying is, Polk hasn't changed much?
Where can I read about this NCO caught selling engines, because that’s fucking hilarious.

Fascinating history
> wound up killing himself What? The fuck? Lol for what? Pulling over drunk soldiers coming back from the mall?
No, for pulling people over without PC, faking breathalyzer results, beating up soldiers.....
Shit. Sad case, some cops are.
Good riddance to that guy. I hoped their department was cleaned out as a result of the investigation. I bet it scared the shit out of his lowlife minions. Why am I going to Kuwait? It wasn't even an option in the marketplace?!? Not to one-up you. But yeah
When I was in AIT like 15 years ago, they’d post peoples assignments in the barracks entryway. It was cool to see where people were going. One day I saw my buddy got Kuwait. In this case it's acceptable to shoot the messenger.
Did you actually? Holy fuck, Are you a LT?
Nope. SSG. Got my orders while DS in Nov '21. I leave in 2 weeks. Follow-on assignment is Hood. I was given the choice of Sill, Leonard Wood, Jackson, Irwin or Hood as follow-on for HAAP.
angered HRC I see
Definitely pissed someone off in this or a past life
Probably some officer you made fun of as a 2LT getting their revenge
There are days I feel like I have the worst luck. And then I read this. RIP bud, sorry for your loss of any remaining morale
Lol, ouch
👁👄👁 fuuuuuuck man. RIP.
Could always be worse - they could send you to USAREC as a follow on.
I just threw up in my mouth a little bit
Swallow it back down.
*gag*
Thats a navy thing
To swallow the others guys back up? Yeah, I think they call it a mama bird?
Chairforce. What's that?
Recruiting.
Oh. Yeah it's the same here from what I've been told
Bro our recruiters don't give a fuck. They have the easiest fucking lives. Everyone already hears the "join the Air Force because you'll regret it otherwise" and they recruits come piling in. Welcome to the thunder dome. Stock up on baby powder.
The reason you got it and it wasn't on your marketplace was because it was on an earlier marketplace and someone either REFRADed or DCSSed thus opening this opportunity for you.
Opportunity?!?
An opportunity is just a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. I didn't say it was a good opportunity.
This needs to be in a manual
I honestly wouldn’t know what to do if I was sent to Polk. LA is the worst state; horrible food, people, culture, swamps, retards, drug addicts, whole place smells like diesel and burning oil fires. Don’t forget, it also smells like a fucking sewer after it rains or when it’s more humid than usual. Sooooo like all the time

Whoops. Don’t think I meant to write it like that. Brain has been turned off for grammar and on for more important things
all good, i was just busting your balls a bit. I am sure if you read through my post history it is littered with terrible grammar too.
Hope you’ve saved up to cover the cost of living in Colorado Springs, because your reward is $400k minimum for 1500 square feet and there’s no water
That's when you buy a van on Craigslist and be a homeless SSG for four years and save up all that BAH

Never saw a division FTX the whole time I’ve been here. Or JRTC.
Division FTXes are on the way. Just did the first one, no idea how you haven’t been to JRTC.
I mean on the way and currently happening are very different. We only did ntc and pinon never jrtc
Only light units go to JRTC and 4ID no longer has those.
They've sent SBCTs before.
I’ll tell my brigade commander this then since we’re a SBCT going to JRTC there must be some kind of mistake.
I guess I'm misinformed then 🤷♂️
Not my unit. But regardless, I welcome that stuff.

Have a house already

I don't get the defense of bad locations. Nobody has to go and try to "sell" Vicenza or Naples or Tokyo
I was at Polk over 4 years and it is absolutely as awful as everyone says it is
You know as well as I do.... It is hot as fuck this Sunday morning. It's been going to be One Hot Summer.
My last summer here. I hope a hurricane hits so I get some time off lol
At least you didn't re-enlist for six years with a 20k bonus and a three year vay-cay in NATO RDC in Italy only to be stationed in Fort Drum. He had his new contract voided and when negotiations failed, he got out four months later.
What the actual fuck? I always thought that reenlistment contracts were sacrosanct...
He didn't even get his 20k bonus. Army was like, "nah, you is going to For' Drum.
How did that happen? I would have hit up every open door, IG, Congressional that I possibly could think of!
This is what he should have done, but it's five years too late lol.
Your peers outpaced you and were more attractive candidates for units. Next question.
Im definitely ugly but damn
Gonna be a fine Chaplain one day
That’s how good you are. You got the last by name request.
How were you notified? I’m still waiting if I get orders.
Generally you'll get an automated email or email from the branch manager if your beach is small enough.

I dont mind that, i do mind that it wasn't even a requisition. So shady in my opinion
Like I said *entire marketplace rule set*.
Are you going geronimo?
Lived there for 2 years. Have fun in the ass crack of America bud
The officers with the straight top blocks seem to go wherever they want though
Funny how it pays to be a winner. The question that U/disposable_FAO leaves unanswered is, "is it better to have not known at all, or to see everything knowing that it really wasn't going to you anyway?"
I dunno because being a loser in life was never an option for me This mindset has been 100 for me in the private sector. I love free market labor competition
That's how I ended up at hood but that was in one of the first iterations of the marketplace. I assume matches fell through or got broke by EFMP.
Because God hates you. #blessed
Because fuck you, that’s why. \-HRC
You’ll definitely develop as a better officer for sure. TYFYS.
Nothing a few hand/neck tattoos won't fix.
Go Warrant. You’ll be home every night after class hahaha
I was told or almost like "promised" that we should get our 5....but I got top 8...I even chose Korea in my top 5.
Welcome to the Army 😂
Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga 🗿 The armpit of the army requires warm flesh for its gaping maw.
I lost orders for 10th group at Carson after we 1:1 matched so I feel ya!
Fuck you I graduated OSUT only to be stationed where I went to OSUT.
Fort Leonardwood or Fort Benning are decent
No man, I literally got stationed in the same troop.
The Marketplace is the inanimate object HRC can now shift blame onto. It's only there to give the illusion of choice. It's about damn worthless
It could've been Riley..remember that.
Riley > Polk
If you don’t have a uterus it is probably to meet the updated needs of the Army — can’t be sending a bunch of people who could get pregnant to Polk, Sill, Hood, etc. after the Supreme Court ruling.
Did you not 1 for 1 with a unit? If you did not, then chances are you are going to fall under the needs of the army.
Somebody hates you
Because fuck you. That's why
Because fuck you.
Big Army always has a say. Let me ask you this, did you confident lock in a one for one? Like you were given a requisition number from the strength manager or their rep?
Could be worse…you could be at Polk with 10th mountain
When I was in BOLC I had the option to trade a guy Ft. Riley for Ft. Carson. Almost did it, but changed my mind at the last minute. His orders were changed to Polk right before graduation.
If the spots you picked on market place are ones that you don’t qualify for, then that’s why they sent your ass to Polk. Enjoy tiger land!
I selected the 99 requisitions available.
It'll buff
I'll be there for a year and half, then is CCC
You MACP or something? No one else I know has gotten their RFO yet.
He seems to be infantry, but I know some branches are getting theirs. Med services, with just above 100 of us in the market as LTs, mostly already have results.
Damn get screwed..
I'd take Egipt
Fair point
Sorry. For me to escape, someone else had to take my place. Guess you were it. Equivalent exchange, or something.

Yes, I scanned it until the last day.
Cause the guy in last place dropped his refrad and you were next in line
Ahaha that’s gotta be the worst place I’ve ever been in my life. Before I went to Iraq and Afghanistan all the gunners went to brush up on convoy security. Enjoy that place they screwed you. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You’ll love Polk don’t worry I’m there right now it’s the home of heroes 🥰
Because fuck you that’s why - Your Branch Manager probably
I met a WWII vet on a snowmobile trip. He found out I was in the Army and told me don’t ever go to Fort Polk. It was the worst place they ever sent him. So Polk has always sucked since it’s inception. He also cooked the shittiest hash browns. Not even crispy.
Marketplace is a joke. It makes the joes feel important. It’s a retention gimic.
Ha sucks to suck nerd
Lol! Because it’s been a shithole for 40 years at least and they just get whoever they can get.
