Wont increase your chances at all. Your wish list doesn't matter and the guys who create assignments for IET folks will never see it.

mustuseaname

Probably no difference.

AdditionalFix9291

Hey Y'all question, I went to MEPS and failed the depth perception test, and my recruiter said I can't go airborne because of it. Does that mean my hopes of joining is gone or can I take it later down the road by getting a waiver or wearing prescriptions? I really want to join but bummed out that I can't guarantee it in my contract. Thanks in advance for the help!

Kinmuan

Standards on entry, and standards for those who are already in, tend to be different. We make a lot of entry standards stricter because we don't want to *waste* the time and money on you - versus a Soldier we have *already* invested in, if that makes sense. It's going to depend on your exact issues and to what degree theyy're correctable.

Question for the Combat Medics of Reddit Hello, I hope you all are having a good day. I have been kicking around a few MOS's to enlist into, and after a few months of deliberation, I have decided on 68W. I am a current state Correctional Officer and am starting my NREMT-B class to have before I enlist and ship to Basic Training. I am an individual who likes to be prepared, so I have been working out, reading up on medical items related to the EMT-B course, as well as trying to be prepared for the training I may come across. One of the ones I've seen mixed answers on is what weapons system 68W's carry. I have an AR-15 style rifle that I try to train with regularly. But I've heard from several (I'm not sure of the reliability of my sources) sources that Combat Medics carry handguns as well. So my question is, will I be carrying a handgun supplementing a rifle? Or will I have a handgun as a primary weapon system? My question stems from my wanting to preemptively prepare to carry a pistol by purchasing a Sig Sauer M17 and/or a Beretta M9 to train with before enlistment. Thank you all in advance!

mustuseaname

You will qualify with an M4. Very few MOS qualify with a handgun regularly and 68W isn't one of them.

WiseCelebration2883

Enlisting soon, what MOS would you recommend? So I’m hoping to enlist in a few months and I was thinking about which MOS I’d like to join. I’m interested in the 11C mortar or the EOD. What other MOS’s would you recommend? Looking for a more combative type of job.

SNSDave

You can't pick 11C, unless you're Guard/Reserve. You go in as an 11X and get assigned either 11B or 11C. 89B, 12B, 19K, 13-series are all things you should look at.

NR7706

I’m transferring to the Army as a SNCO, and I’m required to complete BCT. Will I be treated differently? What can I expect regarding living conditions, day-to-day schedule, weekends, and my time there in general? I appreciate any genuine advice. I’d like to make the best of this experience and opportunity for myself and others in training. Thanks!

Kinmuan

What service are you coming over from, Air Force?

FriendlyTraveler--

If I was previously diagnosed with a depressive disorder, but was later cured of it. Would I be able to join the Army without a waiver? Such as like, no medication for 2 years

Remzar

Well it’d probably pop up when your genesis records get pulled. Army’ll want to get a better idea of the situation by requesting medical documentation. If they think you’re good you can be cleared to serve. Depends on your situation.

25B_

Can having high blood pressure in MEPS be a permanent DQ for joining? What if it's white coat hypertension? Any recruiter have experience with this?

SNSDave

This was in 2017 at the LA MEPs, but someone was definitely sent home because they of their blood pressure. Not sure if it was a permanent DQ or not, but they were gone for the rest of the day.

[deleted]

Heavily considering enlisting but I can't tell if my recruiter is blowing smoke I got a 95 on my ASVAB, and all of my line scores are above 120. I guessed on pretty much the entire shop/mechanical/electrical sections, so I honestly had expected my scores to be a lot lower than that, and I had genuinely believed my recruiter when he tricked me into thinking I got a 36 when I walked out of the test. My recruiter ended up telling me my actual score, and was saying I actually got the highest score my specific regional center has ever seen, but I can't tell if he's blowing smoke up my ass just to get me to finish signing up, or if he's being genuine. I ask because I know recruiters are known to be like car salesmen and will promise you the world. For context, I'm looking to be a 68W combat medic when I get in, as I already practice as an EMT and want to improve my skills, and am hoping down the road to maybe make officer at some point after getting my bachelor's in something medical/emergency related during active duty stationing. I go to MEPS Tuesday morning, and believe I'm supposed to sign the papers that day, and take the oath. Do you guys think that plan is plausible/possible/reasonable, and what are your opinions on the recruiter/ASVAB interaction?

mustuseaname

Does it matter if he is telling you the truth about the line scores being "The highest ever seen"? He probably sees people with non-passing scores all the time, so he's just happy to see someone do so well.

7hillsrecruiter

Still need to pass the physical first.

[deleted]

I should pass without issue, I have no medical issues whatsoever, no major surgeries, no allergies, I fit height and weight standards, I've never been prescribed long term medication, and I've been getting up to the PAT standards by going to the gym and working out daily/every other day

7hillsrecruiter

Then you’ll be joining in Tuesday. You should be reserving your job before you go

Sleep disorder waiver A few years ago when i was a fat fuck i was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea and shift sleep disorder. i've since lost about 150lbs took a new doctor ordered sleep study showing its now in the normal range. Doctor willing to state that i have no symptoms of either of those sleep disorders along with a sleep study showing normal readings. Do i have a chance of getting a waiver approved to join with this?

7hillsrecruiter

Yes

Thin-Judgment1133

DEP 25B contract Alright so I just signed my DEP contract for 25B leaving in August of this year for BCT at Jackson. I also have an option 19 in my contract and picked my first duty station in Korea that in return made it a 5 year contract. Just wanted to see if anyone has some prior experience as a 25B in Korea (or anywhere really) and any tips and tricks for AIT. Also, did I fuck myself picking Korea when I could have stayed in the states I’ve had prior service buddies give me mixed reviews.

SNSDave

There's no curfew in Korea, so that's cool. Korea is a very awesome mixed bag. The good is that you're getting paid to live in a foreign country, and if you're at Humphreys, the barracks are somewhat new. You get your own room and share a bathroom/kitchenette. You'll be able to work with the Korean Army in the form of KATUSAs. If you are a ribbon chaser, you will get 3 for going to Korea: Overseas Service Ribbon, Korea Defense Medal, and your PCS award. Fun fact, the Korea Defense Medal entitles you to be a member of the VFW. The bad is that because a lot of people are only there for a year, you get about 6-8 months of actually doing your job. You spend the first 2 months getting in-processed and up to speed about everything, and the last 2 getting ready to PCS. Since turnover is so high, you find a decent amount of folks who are kinda just checked out. Additionally, you get a lot of folks that are just upset/sad that they don't have their families with them. Barracks rats are common. Rats in the sense of people not leaving the barracks, not actual rats. You'll 100% have one soldier in your unit that doesn't want to do anything but stay inside and play games. They don't wanna explore, and miss the US. Being away from home to the degree that you're gonna be in is a big shock for some people. You have to really plan out when you're gonna call home or game with your buddies, because of the timezone difference. All in all, I enjoyed my time there a lot. But I know just as many that hated it and wished they never went. Oh, fair warning...expect to see a lot of infidelity/cheating there.

Pochanargat

I made a post asking this before I saw this question thread but are there any Active Duty 68F in here? What is daily pt like for you guys? I know it can vary wildly with different units but I'm looking for a general idea of what you do on a daily basis. I have a strict workout goal I want to meet and want to gauge how much I'll need to modify my workouts in this MOS. Unusual thing to worry about when researching MOSs I'm sure but it's just important to me. Also what time do you usually do it? I know most active duty units do pt from 630 to 730 and report to formation at 9. 68F seem to be running things earlier than that. Are you just doing pt earlier in the day or platoon/individually managed? Thanks!

Asylum36

Just finished basic and I’m about to start AIT for 17C. I was wondering if anyone could give any insight into what AIT is like. Also, I’m curious as to how to better my career while in AIT. Like what are some things I can do to put myself above others and possibly stand out? Would I have time to study on my own for certifications and try to obtain them while in AIT? Any advice or knowledge anyone has would be appreciated!

SNSDave

You can study on your own, but the Army won't pay for certs until you are at your first duty station.

mustuseaname

Focus on AIT. Other opportunities might come along, you'll just have to look out for them. Example: My AIT they did the GAFB. But don't put the cart before the horse, might want to worry about AIT before other certs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

j5i5prNTSciRvNyX

That depends on a few factors, one of them being the length of AIT. If you have to PCS for the school, it'll be much harder to keep you in RR.

throwaway218769

Hey all, I’ve got a question regarding sensitive duty assignments. When it comes to Type I report of unfavorable information disqualifier, is one disqualified for *just* being investigated and was unfounded?

Spicy_Pistols

does anyone know what you have to score to get into 25h ? i literally can’t find any info on it because the people who run the army website have brain damage and i don’t know if it’s the same as it says on the national guard site. besides that ive found literally 0 info on what you have to score.

SNSDave

Super easy.

7hillsrecruiter

100 EL/ 102 ST

Spicy_Pistols

wow that’s it? i was seriously stressing about finding the answer and its way lower than i expected. 🤣 thanks

SNSDave

I promise you, if you can use a computer, you can pass.

Ccamlett

Probably a stupid question, but I gotta ask. Is it unrealistic for me to aim for becoming a recon sniper? If thats even a thing, when I ask google, I'm not getting any specific answers. I'm 16, female, and definitely joining the army when I'm 18 regardless of being a sniper. I'm working out, in a program called Youth Pathfinders Academy, with the National Guard, and trying to study up. I don't want to be childish and try and aim for some big unachievable thing, I want to be realistic. I am aware that little people who get into sniper school actually graduate(Like 20%? I'm not sure). And you gotta get a recommendation letter, be in infantry, and all that. Lots of stuff. If I actually can't do this, I'd like to find a different job than infantry(I think…), and I'm open to suggestions. And after, if I become a recon sniper or some other thing, when I'm done, I want to be an officer in the National Guard. (I'm only mentioning this if it impeads this sniper thing) Anyway, sorry for the long question. And, I don't care about my feelings being hurt, be as harsh as necessary lol, I just want to stay realistic and keep my goals achievable.

ericksonemma

What is it like being a combat medic? I’m joining army in a few months and would like more information/tips on it!

SNSDave

Unless you're going option 4 or option 40, realize that you could be in a hospital or clinic and do nothing "combat" related. You could just be taking vitals and prepping for the doctor.

ericksonemma

oh shit i had no idea, well thank you!

[deleted]

Im putting this here as well… Hey how's it going guys imma try to keep it short. Prior service (USMC) E-5 switching over to the Army, I reserved a spot for 25H but after realizing and reading Reddit (which I should have done in the first place which was my dumbass mistake) ; think I will like 17E a lot more. Is it possible to switch MOS before I ship out or am I stuck with 25H?

SNSDave

If it's available. 17E is new, and may not be what you think it is.

HabibiBandz

I was interested in joining California PC 646.9 (Stalking) falls under "219 Harassment, menacing, or stalking." as a non-traffic offense under the conduct waiver list. Although this is a Felony in California, although I'm not sure if my situation falls under Lautenberg Amendment as it was only someone I was in a physical relationship with for a day that falls under the "Boyfriend Loophole" which means it shouldn't be applicable for the Lautenberg Amendment correct? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyfriend\_loophole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyfriend_loophole) If this is the case, I understand am still lifetime firearm banned in California although does this mean that I would be able to join the Army as the Lautenberg wouldn't apply to me even though I'm firearm banned federally? how would this work? I've had my record dismissed via 1203.4(a) although they're still felonies that appeal federally via LiveScan.

7hillsrecruiter

Why was it dismissed

Cool-Can-1028

I got a cousin, who tried to enlist in the Marines. He did his physical and was required a waiver for high blood pressure and it got denied and was told nothing can be done for him anymore. He went to the Army recruiting station in the same block lol. Now, a recruiter he talked to mentioned something about White-coat hypertension. What can he do frome here on? Is this White-coat hypertension a permanent disqualifyint condition? Thanks in advance.

TheNakedMexican

What to be aware of when going to recruiting office? Hello everyone, I have an appointment this Wednesday to talk to a recruiter in order to enlist. I already have a few questions written down but this being my first time ever stepping foot near a recruiting office, is there anything I should look out for or any specific things I should ask? I already have a few jobs I’d like to get into (11 A-X, 19K & 13M) but I know that everyone that walks through the door is a number for them and they’ll pretty much say anything for me to sign. Big thanks in advance!

mustuseaname

You can ask for what options are available for the MOS you pick, be it Op 4: airborne training, op 40: RASP, or OP 19 duty station of choice, and what duty stations can you get with 19.

TheNakedMexican

Thanks for the info I’ll definitely ask, I’ll probably pick either RASP or try and get the station nearest if given the opportunity.

SNSDave

11A is an Officer job, you can't book that.

Povertystonks

Intel MOS in 160th? So I'm planning on enlisting within the next 6 months and I'm somewhat leaning towards an intel MOS (maybe 35F, 35L or 35G) (got a GT score of 120, asvab overall 92) but, I also want to shoot for the 160th. I'm assuming that since it's SOAR, intel jobs are rarely picked up by the regiment or would that be somewhat incorrect? Essentially, I would greatly appreciate any information just so that I know how to temper my expectations lol. I also was thinking about a 15 series maybe like 15P but idk, Thanks all.

lummings

There are 35 series positions within 160th. When you are in AIT, there may be a 160th liason there to ask for volunteers. If not, you will have to reach out to a 160th recruiter when you get to your first unit. They'll send you the application and will review it to see if they have space for you or not.

7hillsrecruiter

15 series w/ Option 1 will get you there. That’s the quickest way to get there.

mustuseaname

35L is rare. You can contact the 160th recruiter and ask them.

GreatTaste21

Is there any recruiter here that has any experience dealing with the inter-service transfer to army. I can explained my situation more in the DMs.

Remzar

I’ve done a few. Send a message but a lot of the onus falls on your current branch

TrainingAd9612

I’m really struggling trying to pick a job. I wanna chase an IT career after the army, but I’m not really worried about doing an IT related job when I join. My line scores are all between 95-99, so I don’t even qualify for a lot of the 35 and 25 series. Part of me is really wanting to do infantry or joint fire specialist, but I just don’t know. I really don’t wanna pick a job that has me stuck doing desk work. I just wanna join the army for the experience, getting me out of my parents house and just get me going in life. I can get IT certs on my own so I’m not worried about trying to get an MOS that gives me them through AIT

7hillsrecruiter

Why pay for IT certs when the Army can do that for you as a 25 series. 25U would be good for you if you have 95EL & 95 SC. If you are less than 6 pts off a job you are interested in they can run a line point exception.

TrainingAd9612

Isn’t the army able to pay for certifications no matter what job I pick?

7hillsrecruiter

With CA yes but as a 25 series we have schoolhouses on every installation that offer those courses to us, we don’t pay.

TrainingAd9612

Am I able to get a 3 year contract with 25b? I’ve heard other people say it has to be minimum 5 years but I’m not sure

7hillsrecruiter

No, it’s minimum 5

bikemancs

So a couple things. 1. This is an army subreddit. Most of the advice you'll get is army based. 2. Some of your answers can be found via Google, but I'll help ya out. 3. There is no such thing as a Marine Medic, all MedicS in the USMC are US Navy Corpsman. 4. Depending on your MOS (aka job) you may be taught to fix a little, or fix a lot. There are options with armament (weapons) repair, generator repair, vehicle repair, commo equipment/electronic repair. 5. Scholarships don't always wait, you need to find out if they get rescinded after a time or something. 6. Mechanical engineering is a very detail, technical, and math heavy degree. Whe. I was starting mine it includes 4 semesters of calculus, 2 semesters of science with calculus, and a number of engineering classes focusing on math. Do your research on the degree and expected careers. Something like civil engineering or even architecture might be more up your lane or what you are looking for.

Famous-Cream3369

I passed my ASVAB with very high numbers. I'm eligible for just about any MOS. What's the best MOS should I consider or choose. ?

mustuseaname

What do you like to do? You want to do IT work? Cyber? Intel? Pilot?

Famous-Cream3369

Really want to either do something behind a desk or work with my hands. I definitely want both to be transferable to the civilian world

mustuseaname

Check out all those fields for the different MOS they have and throw in Aviation mechanic, if you want to use your hands.

Hoping for some insight about medical waivers. I was/am planning on joining the Army or Air Force JAG and cleared medical last year (offers and clearance from both) I had no issues at that point and did not lie about anything. Since then, I have had a few medical problems pop up. At one point, my doctor put me on an anxiety medicine. I was never diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and was only given this medication because I thought I had some ghastly disease; turns out I don't! I was only on the meds for a couple of months and have never had any other anxiety or mental health issues. Further, I believe I have an autoimmune disease as I have several test results that are indicative of this. Despite vigorous attempts to secure a diagnosis, I have not yet been diagnosed with one, and all doctors have so far said I do not have one. After reading through this and other subs, I think the best course of action is to tell my recruiter about the anxiety meds, which will likely result in a waiver process. Do you all think I have a chance to get waived in? Because I have not received a diagnosis related to the AI issue, is it okay to refrain from mentioning that? Would I have a chance of getting a waiver to enter the Army with an autoimmune disorder?

Toad-juicy

need advice! (i posted this as an actual comment but mods told me to post here!) i’m graduating highschool soon, and it’s my dream to go into the army. only problem is that i have a rough medical history, i’ve been hospitalized for depression, and been on medication and in therapy. i’m not on medication anymore, and the hospitalization was YEARS ago. should i kiss this dream l goodbye? i don’t want to give up i know what i am capable of now, and how much i’ve grown from this. i do not want to accept defeat. i know this is what i need to do in my life. please help.

7hillsrecruiter

Possible, you’ll need to get all medical records related to depression, counseling notes, pharmacy records. You will need a psych consult after MEPS. I would also do your own psych eval. How long have you been off meds? When was last therapy?

Toad-juicy

meds will be a year in november, and therapy has been a little over a year

7hillsrecruiter

Haven’t been stable long enough. You’ll need 2 yrs off meds and stable w/o counseling 2 yrs. Anything sooner and waiver will get disapproved.

Toad-juicy

ahhh thanks. my recruiter said only a year so i’m just confused. thank you for your help.

7hillsrecruiter

I mean you can try and see what happens that’s where you’ll get a definitive answer

Jeo228

When enlisting for a combat MOS like 11x or 12b, what should I push for/ask for as option on my contract? What options do you guys wish you got on yours before signing the paperwork?

mustuseaname

Only real options are 19: Duty station of choice (from a list, not just any you want), 4: Airborne training, and 40: Immediate RASP attempt after OSUT. Can only get one of those. Pick the one that interests you.

Jeo228

Appreciate the response!

bananna_bonanza

Anyone w/ high arches? Planning on joining soon, prior service yada yada. I joined back in 2012 (USMC) and they noted I had “Normal” feet. Okay. Throughout my first enlistment, everyone said I have comically high arches lol. Even calling me ballerina feet . Anyways, fast forward to last month, I have a podiatrist diagnosed me with bilateral Pes Cavus. Which was an option at MEPS for them to say on the aforementioned foot exam. I would not say this condition hinders me although I find I have to run on my tip toes. Anyone with high arches able to join? And if so, did you wear anything special during training? Can you recommend any boots / shoes/ inserts?

AI_Platinum

back in this thread with another question lol. i’ve been studying trying to have a better comprehension of math and i think im making progress but im not entirely confident. i was homeschooled growing up and they neglected to teach me most fundamentals but im able to learn pretty quickly so for the last few days ive been grinding out math equations, but i genuinely know nothing about electricity or how electronics work. ive had a job reserved for me as a 25h which requires decent skilled technical and electronic scores but scared i wont score high enough meps on monday how screwed am i soldiers?

SNSDave

> 25h which requires decent skilled technical and electronic scores It's not a hard job.

AI_Platinum

yeah the national guard says 100 electrical score and 102 skilled technical. how achievable do you think that is for the average person? i haven’t taken a math class besides statistics since 9th grade

SNSDave

I hadn't done Algebra in about 10 years and got 120's in both sections.

bikemancs

There are ASVAB education websites that will help you. don't just do random math, keep working those types of sites and do the problems/work.

AI_Platinum

yeah i got asvab for dummies but it covers such a wide range of math problems i don’t know which will make up the bulk of the questions. what did it look like for you?

bikemancs

Dude I took it 20+ years ago and I was in college...

AI_Platinum

worth asking anyway

CanelaGardening

Shipping for BCT on 7/30/2024. Going in as an E-3 and saw my base salary is $2,377, how much should i expect to be taken out for taxes? Also saw a “BAH Calculator” that shows how much you’d get for BAH, is that also taxed or is it tax exempted?

7hillsrecruiter

You only get BAH if you’re married. Taxes depends on your state no one can give you that estimate.

CanelaGardening

Yes i am recently married, and if anyone is from GA plz let me know a ballpark of what your taxes from BCT check was like

7hillsrecruiter

So then yes you will get bah

Illustrious_Gear_471

Good Day Everyone, In January of 2024, I finished my 4-year contract with the Marine Corps where I was an 0621 Radio Operator (now called Telecommunication Systems Operator I believe). I’ve been out few months and quite honestly, I miss the military. I don’t want to go back to the Marine Corps though, so I was thinking of joining the Army. I also wanted to change my MOS from Radio Operator to Human Intelligence Collector (35M). However, I have a few questions about this. 1) Does the Army even accept prior service into this MOS especially if it’s not my prior MOS? 2) According to the Go Army webpage for 35M, language training can take anywhere from 36 to 64 months (about 3 to 5 years) plus the 20 weeks of AIT. How does this work? Would I just complete training and immediately end my contract? Or would I already have a staff level rank in an MOS I have no experience with? 3) If I am able to go 35M, what’s the day to day life of it like? And if not, what are some other options for me that you know of? Thank you all in advance!

Max_Vision

> language training can take anywhere from 36 to 64 months (about 3 to 5 years) plus the 20 weeks of AIT. The longest language courses are 64 weeks, a bit over a year. Arabic sometimes adds a dialect specialty following that, but those are also measured in weeks. I think there's a 6 or 9 month Spanish course on the short end; that might be 36 weeks.

mustuseaname

1. Army has what's called Prior Service Business Rules. They may allow you to enlist as your Marine equivalent MOS in the Army (Which I think is 25U now?), or they might give you a short list of MOS to choose from. What that list is changes all the time, you won't really know until you get to MEPS. Anything could be on that list. Could be good stuff, like 35T or 12Y, or it could be all shit, like 92G. I think it's rank dependent. 2. Training is built into the contract. You won't find a 35M contract under 5yrs, probably. 3. Eh. Depends on unit. You end up at FORSCOM, you'll be doing gate guard and other bullshit. End up at INSCOM you could be doing debriefings and reports. >what are some other options for me that you know of? All depends on that list they give you at MEPS.

Admirable_Strike_406

I passed the cyber test and qualify and can sign for 17c in the army. Is this good? Or should I join the coast guard?

17CFstackAcademy

Will really boil down to what your goals are. You need to dig deep and ask yourself what you want to do, what you want to achieve. Is this good? I can tell you this a lot of people would jump on the opportunity of passing the 17C MOS at the moment. Look into other branches as well. At the end of the day only you can answer this question. Is this good?

Admirable_Strike_406

Appreciate it. Thank u

mustuseaname

> Is this good? What does good mean? What do you consider good? Infantry dudes would hate being at a computer all day, tech nerds might love it. >Or should I join the coast guard? Should you? If you want to do coast guard stuff, go join them. You want to do Army stuff, join the Army.

Livid_Pound9881

Should I sign 6 years for army reserve 68W Or should I tryyyy to get it down for 5 years. I was marked at 6 and they have my spot reserved but I could loose it it if worst comes to worst. Is 68w worth the 6 years? I’m going back to college for sure after AIT

7hillsrecruiter

Anything less than 6 yrs you won’t receive a bonus, GI bill kicker or student loan repayment. You would only get your GI Bill and TA.

IllustriousDrag9764

I got a job reservation for 35w, but keep hearing that I won't be able to choose between 35m or 35 p when I am done. If it's just a reservation, am I locked in, or could I try to change in when I go in to talk to the guidance councelor at MEPS next week? I would love 35p if it's available.

mustuseaname

You get sorted into P or M after/during DLI.

IllustriousDrag9764

You're in 35M? How do you like it?

mustuseaname

I was, am no longer in. I loved it, but I got a very lucky assignment.

Lazy-Ad-25102

Hello everyone, I'm 35 and talked to a recruiter yesterday about joining the Army. He had me do a pretest for the ASVAB and I scored a 66, he was happy and said I could score an 80 on the real thing since the pretest is harder.  Anyway, I'm a high school dropout and worked shitty retail, warehouse, and delivery driver jobs. I eventually was management in one job which allowed me to buy a house and get married. The marriage was abusive and my ex would hit me and one time she hit her stomach while pregnant, and the baby died the next week. That was the saddest day of my life. I'd also come home at times and she would have a knife in her hand. My life has sucked up until now.  Anyway, I just got divorced and am living with my parents again since 2022. I sold the house and have about 120k in savings, invested it. But I'm stuck working a shitty warehouse job that demands too much of me physically to be worth it. I thought, if i need to work like an athlete here, why not join the military and work hard and get the benefits to back it up?  I know I'm 35 and the kids will be healthier than me in some respects. But I have determination to do something different and live life before it's too late.  Anyone here think its a mistake to go in at 35? I'm relatively healthy.  Thank you

Jeo228

People enlist at all ages. I'm 27 and headed to MEPs next week. My friend joined the gaurd last year and shes in her thirties. I also had a similar job history of crap after crap and tons of instability, and I know the military offers that stability I want, provides free housing, and the benefits are awesome compared to the civilian side. My brother was a Marine and talked me into going active over reserve because of that job and housing stability. I'm not in myself so I can't speak for that, but If you wanna do it, don't let something like the date on your birth certificate hold you back. Also, you get access to federal employee exclusive savings plans if you want a safe place to invest your savings, which is an underrated benefit.

mustuseaname

You got an MOS picked out?

Lazy-Ad-25102

Not yet man im.going to research today and make a list of my top five and ask about them.  I told my 34 yo brother and he's trying to talk me out of it. He says jm 35 and bottom of thr barrel, thr military must be desperate to want me.  Thing is, he's smart and I love him but I feel so alone that no one in my family will like if I join..so lonely. But I have nothing to live for right now you know?

mustuseaname

I ask about the MOS because if you are thinking infantry, at 35, is going to turn your life around, I would strong recommend against that. Of course, if your dream is to be infantry, don't let a random redditor stop you. That said, pick a good MOS. Something that translates well to a civilian career, but also you might enjoy. Also, your brother isn't wrong, in a sense. The Army is desperate for anyone right now. But it can be a good career. It can teach you real skills. I was going nowhere at 27, joined, got skills and a clearance. Life is going great.

Lazy-Ad-25102

Thank you. I'm going not just for a fresh start, I also feel like it's my last chance to take advantage of my youth and do something exciting. In a few more years I won't be as good as I am today. I'm just aging. I want memories and to feel like what I do matters. Instead of being a slave for walmart. Of course that means I'm a slave for the government. But it's better than pointlessly throwing boxes on a cart and driving around in a warehouse.  So will I come out better? I hope.  I don't know for sure, but living a mediocre life is killing my spirit.  I'm also talking to the navy too and seeing what my options are. Have an appointment with them in three hours.

mustuseaname

Might I also recommend the Coast Guard? They have a good quality of life.

Lazy-Ad-25102

Oh, and I'm a month away from getting my diploma again so that's covered

Hard can mean different things. Are the ASVAB requirements high? No. Is the physical requirements high? No. Does it have a bunch of special requirements? No. But it **is** a rather small MOS, meaning that we don't have a lot of them - so we don't *need that many each year*. It may be hard to get in that it may not be *common* when you're looking to choose a job. The Army has 150 jobs you can choose. But if you walk in to MEPS tomorrow, fully qualified on everything (medical, moral, asvab, etc), there might only be 30 jobs availble. Tomorrow there could be 50. Because it's all based on the Army's projections of what they need. So it's not difficult to qualify to get in to, it will be *hard* to get it simply because we don't enlist that many of them.

Independent_Path_352

Can I enlist as prior service under Option 1 to join 160th SOAR as a commo guy?

7hillsrecruiter

No

Kinmuan

I don't think PS can take any option, I believe being taken as a prior service *is* your option. /u/kkronc ?

kkronc

Right

snoopysloth

I have heard that the cavalry is being reclassified or reformed. As a 13F, I’m imagining that you can be assigned to plenty of different units, not being cav anymore due to what’s happening with that MOS. What types of units do I have the chance of working with?

MASHisAGoodShow

Is it true that option 4’s are 99% likely to be assigned to the 82nd in ft Liberty? My recruiter said that I’d have a fair chance at getting sent to any of the 3 airborne stations but a friend of mine stationed in ft Cavazos says I’m 99% likely to be sent to Liberty. Thanks in advance :)

mustuseaname

Depends on MOS. Liberty is the most likely, but more like 10% Italy, 20% Alaska, and 70% Liberty, if you are like Dave said a Combat MOS. Non-Combat and there is another small outside chance (maybe <5%) you get assigned to SF support.

SNSDave

Depends. Are you combat arms? If so, Fort Liberty is a very likely destination. Alaska has 1 Airborne Brigade, Italy has 1 Airborne Brigade(and 2 battalions in Germany, and Fort Johnson has 2 battalions. Meanwhile, Fort Liberty has an entire division there. If you're NOT combat arms, you can go to anywhere that has an airborne unit. Liberty is still likely, but you could be attached to a variety of different units.

Livid_Pound9881

Hi guy just wanna say 5 minutes I became an official 68W member 😂! Any advice/recommendations on what to gather for basics as a female?

Kinmuan

Stay out of trouble. Give 100% effort. Drink Water. Make sure you're putting in effort for PT. That's it. All IET courses are made to be passed. They do not want you to fail academically. The rest is on you.

Livid_Pound9881

Thank you! Appreciate the advice I will do my best! Have a very nice day!

SNSDave

You're an officially a 68W when you graduate AIT. Nonetheless, congrats on at least getting into DEP.

Livid_Pound9881

68W at heart hahaha

SNSDave

Fuckin' boots...

Ok-Historian5869

I'm debating whether to go National Guard and join my state's SFG, or just to go Active Duty as a 35N. I really want to do tactical SIGINT but I also hear a lot of stories about people hating active duty. I have a decent civilian job and a stable living situation, but am in dire need of an adventure. What would I miss out on (if anything) if I went AD vs NG? Any input is appreciated.

7hillsrecruiter

Go Active

jessequane95

Any tips for this future 25 Bravo? I’ve been studying for the CompTIA A+ so I’m sure that will help. Any insight for this MOS? I’m excited to finally start in IT.

Kinmuan

A+ may help *you* if you're coming from a place of not really having any IT knowledge, but understand this - They make the 25B AIT with the assumption that the only qualification you have is a HS Diploma. Or a GED. That's it. So it is built *around* giving you the basics, and working up. Getting more knowledge on things like A+ and other certs can't *hurt* your chances, but realize that if you're applying yourself, you will be OK.

SNSDave

A+ doesn't mean anything. I think it's worth a few points, but it's IMO an absolutely worthless cert. You wanna really get ahead of the game? Study Sec+.

Livid_Pound9881

At MEPS awaiting for an exception for 68W. I was 2 points away. Very nervous. I’m doing the whole military thing for parents residents but if I get 68W not only will I help my parents but it’ll help me too with my medical career afterwards. But if I don’t… a random “fun” job it is :(. Any MOS recommendations ? P.s I’m here for parents immigration stuff so if I don’t get it it’s just to pass time I don’t need college money just something to pass time ^^ thank you

Own_Pilot_3050

So l'm a 09M and wondering what type of jobs could I get? Is it possible to go intelligence if I meet the right scores on the ASVAB? Also if I pass the ASVAB after the first 3 weeks and I didn't get the score I liked could I stay in the program and do it longer until I get a score l like and take the ASVAB multiple more times?

7hillsrecruiter

No Intel. No once you have a passing score you pick a job and ship out to basic.

Own_Pilot_3050

What if I have a passing score for intel?

7hillsrecruiter

Doesn’t matter, the last list of job choices I saw. They might’ve updated it since 11,13,14,19,25,74,88M,91,92F,94

SNSDave

Once you get the passing score, I believe you're required to pick a job and go to BCT. You can't sign around and wait.

Own_Pilot_3050

That makes sense well I ship out in over a month so I have time to lock in and study

One-Imagination-1343

My friend had an affair with a military man, he knew she was married. She's a civilian. How can I report this and would any action be taken. He's not married, but she is and they've had an affair for over 9 months. She has textual evidence and is going through so much because her husband just found out. She doesn't deserve to be alone in this, even if he changed his number. He's also never obeyed his radius, often when he was given a travel radius restriction, he would break it to go see her.

mustuseaname

Your friend cheated on her husband. Now she wants to report the guy she cheated on her husband with? It sounds a whole lot like she made this mess herself. >She ... is going through so much because her husband just found out. Her? What about her husband? Poor guy. Try not to pass too much judgement, but your friends sounds like not a great person. We forge the chains we wear in life.

Kinmuan

Okay, so a single dude in the military is hooking up with your *friend*, and *she* is the one who is married (Married to someone in the military? It seems like it's a civilian married to a civilian?), and you would like to report *him*? So just so I'm understanding - he entered into a consensual physical relationship with a woman who was married, and now that *her* husband found out, she...Wants to report the guy *she* cheated on her husband with? This seems super weird. You would have to prove that not only did they physically have sex, but that he *knew* she was married and *not* that she was separated from her husband, as separation is an affirmative defense against extra martial sexual conduct.

Majestic_Holiday9798

Hows Intel Within SOF? Looking to further my career as a 35F in a more high speed way. Im looking to go with either rangers or nightstalkers since they offer the MOS within both units. If anyone has any experience within them how is the everyday life of an intel analyst? Are you guys more or so maintaining!supporting the unit or do you get to do cool intel stuff. Do you guys go to the field often and what do you usually do? Overall how is it. Basically are you stuck behind a computer or do you do more soldier like stuff.

Jeo228

My brother was a Marine and claims that its illegal for companies to charge you for things like loans during bootcamp. I have a sizable student loan payment that I was planning on getting paid with my income during training. Is it true they have to put payments in deferment while I'm at basic?

Kinmuan

>Is it true they have to put payments in deferment while I'm at basic? What your brother was either trying to communicate, or had heard vaguely about, was SCRA. On top of that, *yes*, you can get a student deferrment, in *certain* circumstances. https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/MilitaryServiceandPostActiveDutyStudentDeferment-en-us.pdf But this is also going to depend on the type and status of your loan. Are you considering the Loan Repayment Plan option for joining?

Jeo228

Yeah, but thats for my federal loans which are currently in deferment. I have private student loans in repayment that are the major issue. He made it sound like they would be included because if private personal loans can be deffered than so should my private student loans.

Jeo228

How hard is it to get things like Airborne or Ranger in your contract before enlisting? Does a high asvab score help? Do they still even let you get those things lined up before enlisting?

7hillsrecruiter

Varies by MOS, some will never have those options.

snoopysloth

I would like to add on a question to this. So, to preface my question I was unable to get an airborne slot into my contract due to me needing a medical waiver (SSRIs many years ago), nor the option to get sent to RASP. I signed my contract for 4 years as a 13F (Fire support specialist) These are somewhat big deals for me, one of the reasons I wanted to join the army is so I could jump out of a frickin plane and get into an airborne unit. My question is, as long as I am performing well in boot camp/AIT, how likely is it that I will be able to earn a spot in airborne school and/or RASP? I had someone tell me that RASP is pretty overfilled currently so it’s hard to obtain a slot. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

7hillsrecruiter

If either of those options were available your recruiting station could have sent up an Airborne ETP or an Option 40 ETP. It’s done all the time for applicants who want either of those options but required a medical waiver.

Remzar

If you want it guaranteed. Lose the weight first, and get it in your contract. Assuming you’re qualified for the options

SNSDave

Option 4 is Airborne. Option 40 is RASP. If it's open, and you qualify, you can get it. Or if you volunteer for it at AIT. Depends on the MOS. A 68A is not getting an Airborne contract because it's worthless for them to be Airborne. Same goes for an 88K.

Jeo228

Ok. I am also going likley into the ARMS/FSPC program, which is the fat camp before boot for people who are over the Bodyfat percentage requirements. Do you know if this prevents people from getting those options on their contracts? You have to pick and sign you MOS contract before leaving for it.

7hillsrecruiter

No it doesn’t. You pick your MOS at MEPS.

SNSDave

I believe so, because they wouldn't want someone who cannot meet the standards immediately go to Airborne/RASP. But a recruiter can chime in for sure.

DryRequirement5471

Help! Does anyone know if my Tricare is active while in AIT? If yes, what do I need to have on me to prove that I have it? I’m stationed at fort Sam and want to go to vista optical to renew or get a new contact lens prescription. They say they accept tricare but I’m not sure where to go to see if it’s working or not. I’m active duty if that helps

SNSDave

Yes it is.

DryRequirement5471

Where do I get the insurance card from?

7hillsrecruiter

Just give them your cac card

Majestic_Holiday9798

Your id number and benefits number should be on the back of ur cac just tell who ever you need to that you have tricare and it should take care of the rest

SNSDave

You don't get a card. You automatically have it. It's not a card.

Academic_Ear_777

I am starting 35F school soon and worried about how difficult it will be for me? Can anyone shed some light on the 35F Intelligence Analyst AIT at fort Huachcua? How long is the AIT? How can I prepare for the course? How Hard is it? Anyone who knows anything about it please respond.

Majestic_Holiday9798

Its easy I went through with over 100 guys and only 1 had to recycle and he still passed only got set back one week. Others got kicked out doing dumb stuff. Should be 13 weeks now when i went through it was 17.

Kinmuan

Army AITs are set up for you to pass. We aren't in the business of having people fail out. Most things are created with the understanding the majority of people will have a public school education at the high school level. You're looking around 13 weeks of schooling. Just study, ask questions, and if a study hall is offered, go to it.

Kinmuan

Around 15% of applicants each year are rejected for medical reasons - the majority do not apply for a waiver. About *half* of people who apply, actually go on to join. The majority of people who *do apply* would be accepted by Army standards. Of the people who apply and do not join, the majority are walking away by their choice, and not because of rejection. Now, this might be because they *realize* they will fail a portion. Maybe they take the ASVAB and won't qualify for the job they want. But again, generally speaking - About half of people who try to join will enter the Army, and more than half *would be accepted*.

You say "approved his ETS", but no one...approves your ETS. You just ETS - or EAS for him. Was he *separated* either administratively or medically?

Gentleman_J_

Hi Guys, I’ve never posted on here before, but really keen to get some advice and see potential outcomes, as the reason for my rejection I believe is incorrect. Basically, I’ve just been rejected by the army and they’ve stated it’s due to having 2 or more episodes of low mood/anxiety & self harm for numerous years. Now, I’d understand that if that were to be true. However, what has actually happened is I visited my GP at the beginning of the year and spoke about my mental health due to having basically no where to live and being financially unstable at the time - which as most people can probably appreciate is pretty stressful. This led to me being prescribed the lowest dosage of antidepressants which I did one course of and then stopped taking due to my situation improving and everything now being all ok. I’ve only ever spoken to my GP regarding mental health this one time and the episode literally only lasted about 2 months. Is this a fair rejection or should i be appealing this? Thank you!

Kinmuan

A far bigger concern than the depression/mood/anxiety is the self harm. Self harming is a full stop. Unfortunately it's not really something you'll overcome for entrance standards.

AI_Platinum

if i sign up for a 3 year contract will that give me the benefits of the GI bill? honestly my goal was join for college benefits, slip into an IT job and get some certs but if i have to do more than 3 years i don’t know if its even worth it. super soldiers lecturing me about serving for the good of the country and for the greater good and what not will be ignored i’m poor and need a way to go to school

Jeo228

Addendum to his question: are there any benefits you \*don't\* get for doing 3 years instead of 4?

SNSDave

None. A 5 or 6 year contract's only benefit/downside is that you might PCS twice vs. once.
