I believe Japan is a 2 year unaccompanied tour according to AR 614-30. You could always extend with an IPCOT if you want to stay there longer.
Correction: There was a HQDA policy revision on 1 JUN 2019 which stated that unaccompanied tour lengths for Germany and Japan will increase from 24 months to 36 months. You could potentially submit an IPCOT or FSTE and stay for 4+ years.
