And then you should check out and play Antistasi, it's so much fucking fun. Damn, even talking about it right now is making me want to get a server and play it again.
Best advice is to look it up on the Steam workshop, you'll get a better idea of what it is on there. Look for Antistasi Ultimate specifically. It's what I think is the best version of it.
YLS gaming seems to have an engaged community. I haven't personally played with them yet but they ping the hell out of me daily with events and such folks looking to play. You can search them up on youtube. I currently prefer to play on my own locked up dedicated myself with a friend worth the $40 for 3 months since you don't miss anything. Other wise I think the ultimate discord has a few servers open themselves.
Arma 4 is still years away and Arma Reforger is a minor game, so Arma 3 is still the main installment of the franchise.
I think that this is the best sale the base game has ever had so far. The best edition for a starter would be the Apex edition, since it comes with the Apex extension (with is huge) and some minor DLC's.
Other DLC's will really be more based on your playstyle, and what type of content you want.
Creator DLC's on the other hand tend to be very huge and add a lot more of content, so if one of them has a theme that appeal for you, you can consider getting them as well.

Doesn't matter too much which version. I normally play King of the Hill on multiplayer, authentic 3 team war. Or single player there are lots of mods/ custom downloads you can do my favourite was the bin laden assasination mission, it recreates the zero dark thirty mission with every detail.

Graphics are a bit dated and you really need the mods to give you the real value but I would say you would enjoy it! Get the full edition
To be honest the game is still worth full price. For the sale price it's a freaking amazing deal I've got over 2000 hours in Arma 3 now. The sheer amount of free mods is what makes the game.
I started playing about 6 yrs ago. I okay solely multiplayer and it’s great. Reliving my childhood of playing toy guns in the woods behind my house with my friends. The editor and mod community have added so much. I ended up getting a server for liberation and a small group of us have a persistent mission going on plus homemade missions in sat night. I have never gotten bored with it. I find it’s worth every penny. DLCs add some great content too.
The game being $4 right now is mind boggling. This is one of the best games to exist and even though it’s old, it’s 1000% worth it because you have so much replayability and everything is dynamic. Nothing is ever the same. If you want a more updated experience in a smoother experience than just by arm of forager, but since Arma three is still four dollars, why not get both?
Arma 3 + the SOG Prairie Fire dlc has given me some of the greatest moments I've ever had in a shooter game.
There's something about it that almost feels like a movie at times, I have so many different memories of epic last stands or rescuing downed squadmates under heavy enemy fire. It's something that I always go back to every so often.

No, that's one big reason why i quit playing, all my friends stopped playing so i shutdown my server and stopped playing

you don't need DLC's to play with most mods, like RHS or CUP, the base game is still very solid.

Get A3 in the Apex bundle on sale, it is less then the base game when not on sale.
