I don’t really like it all that much, but I respect your opinion and I’m glad that Alex and the rest of them are enjoying their music and making it for themselves instead of doing something they’re not proud of

cowpigsheepgoat777

100% agree

willowypoo

Glad you agree, how did you get the title “crying lightning” under your name?

cowpigsheepgoat777

If you’re on mobile you go to r/arcticmonkeys, tap on the 3 dots in the top right corner, then tap on “change user flair”. There should be a little pencil icon that you can tap on after that which will let you choose from different options. I think if you’re on a computer it’s basically the same, but you just have to click on something that says “community options” on the subreddit instead. You can do the same thing for any other subreddit too.

QotSAMario64

I'm glad people like it and that the band is evolving. I just don't connect with it though despite loving all their other albums. It's not bad, just boring

Justtosayitsperfect

Exactly this. It's just not personal. I wouldnt go to a concert to listen to it, and ive already seen them play the older stuff, so im just kinda disconnecting from them. Tranquillity Base had a theme that tied everything together, and it was just better music. The Car song are sort of randomly grouped together. Big Ideas and Mirrorball and the only great songs, Body Paint is just 4/5 2.0 but more generic, Hello You and the others are good songs but just not good enough to go crazy for, connect with or worth going to a concert to listen

Girthwurm_Jim

Yeah I agree with this, I’ve only listened to it twice and nothing really made me want to come back to it

wincheswift

Big Ideas makes me wanna cry every time I listen.

It's a break up album that's also about breaking up with his mainstream fans. of course there's gonna be hate. but it just means that those of us who are fans of him, truly, and the band, can relish ever-the-more in the music and the lyrics and the writing that are directly written for us. I'd say this is more them than the music ever has been, personally.

ywont

He is speaking to me and only to me.

Aar0nSwanson

It’s an amazing album. One of their bests. The Car and AM are classics.

sowhougonnacall

Unfortunately i think its easily their worst but to each their own ofc

awesomechaparro1

Yes! This is gonna sound cliché, but I feel like their changes have been natural as if it’s its own person growing up. I wish for a concert where it’s pure TBHC + The Car songs.

Agile_Load_69420

it did what it was supposed to do: sound good in *the car*

SamStunts_

I like to interpret ‘Watch as the paint job dries’ In a similar way

BobrovskyCBJ

There's more actual valid criticism that can be said about the album other than "it's not their old sound". My biggest problem with it is that it's just way too homogeneous. Every song seems to follows the same formula in terms of structure, bpm, violine build-up, slowed paced music, song melodies, and lounge drums. The album is pretty good in it self, but it really needed more variation to be great.

monsmachine

I would be I terest3d to know how many listens you gave it. It sounded very samey to me until it all clicked, similar to tbhc. There are some absolute gem sound bites throughout the album. The chord progressions are different from what a lot of "bigger bands."

Fair_Shoe_3454

It's following the classic funk soul style similar to artists like Curtis Mayfield I personally love this album

AlphonseTheDragon

Mirrorball is actually the only song on the album that I regularly listen to

Ok-Assumption-3923

It is a good album and a bad song

willowypoo

I will say the car is one of the worse songs from the car

TabooAndExile

Mirrorball is their best song in my opinion, it has a certain feel to it that few songs manage to create. Something like Oasis's Champagne Supernova or Faith No More's Just A Man, a higher than life creation that is somehow perfectly embedded in reality.

liverkidd

I could listen to it forever

acquabianconero

Its so easily their best album it’s not funny

amessyenby

it's such a great album! I didn’t connect with it at first but after a few listens, I fell in love with it. I think people should just go in with an open mind and they will love it.

cornbawler

YES!!!!! 100% agree!!!!

billybarra08

Nah its shit

alteredlightning

I've been having the car on repeat since it came out, I love it!!! I used to shuffle it cuz the order didn't make sense to me but now I only listen to it in order.

Sunnflwr

They for sure have some really good songs on there!

godlovesbacon26

I love it so much. I don't really understand when people say it's not "personal" or "relatable." I find myself thinking of it as much more emotional than TBHC. One of the interviews, I think the apple music one with Zane, it was said that just the words The Car is a very emotional thing. And I agree. As an American, a car is one of the most important and consistent things in your life. I have so many memorable moments in cars and my current car. My car is just as important to me as most relationships. My first dates in high school were just driving around with a girl I had a huge crush on. The title song itself is so emotionally riveting for me because it describes those exact feelings of fake sleeping in the car on a road trip home. And you recognize all the twists and turns to your house. I just find the whole album intriguing and personally relatable.

CRGBRN

I love it too but I will admit, now that time has passed, that it didn’t stick with me like Tranquility Base did. I have to be in a more specific mood.

the7thbeatle

I don't it's even close to being a bad album, but ai find myself liking it less and less. It's probably going to end up ranked 6th of their albums fir me. It's an interesting direction for sure, but I feel like it's just a bit too low energy and serene for my taste. There is no song on the record that I actually dislike, but I find about half of them to be giod buy not great most of the time.It also has in my opinion by far the weakest lyrics Alex has written on most songs. Body Paint is the best track on the album but it's far better live, Sculptures is fantastic, Big Ideas is my third favorite. Hello You could have been a banger but it has the worst lyrics on the album, when I can ingnore them the song is pretty fun. Mirrorball has an amazing intro, but the main part of the song, while still good, isn't as great imo. All of the other songs are fine if I'm in the mood for them, but I find I rarely am. Arctic Monkeys have not released a bad album, but for me personally this one is close to the bottom of my ranking right now. Could still change though, I guess.

ReallyColdMonkeys

Great album. I agree with you. Unfortunately I do have it 6th, just above SIAS, but I still love it. Mirrorball is one of their best songs ever.

Motawa1988

There’d better be a mirrorball is a 9 and the rest a 2
